This flexible MSc programme is suitable for individuals who already have an accredited undergraduate civil engineering degree and who are seeking to further their engineering skills and achieve chartered status.

The course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators as meeting the requirements for further learning for a chartered engineer (CEng) for candidates who already have an accredited CEng (partial) BEng(Hons) or an accredited IEng (full) BEng/BSc(Hons) undergraduate first degree.

You will study a range of advanced civil engineering subjects linked to cutting-edge research. These include earthquake engineering dynamics and design, advanced geotechnics and rock mechanics, bridge engineering and advanced hydraulics. You will also develop the skills demanded in civil engineering consultancy offices around the world.

On the course, you will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art laboratories and advanced technical software for numerical modelling.

The course is flexible and allows you to combine advanced civil engineering with related subjects including water environmental management, construction management and sustainable construction.

Course structure

The course has an emphasis on practical applications of advanced civil engineering concepts. You will make use of our advanced laboratories, modern computer facilities and technical software.

The MSc requires successful completion of six modules together with a dissertation on an agreed technical subject; a dissertation is not required, however, for the PGDip.

The taught component of the course comprises six core modules, and you can either take all six of these modules or choose four with an additional two approved modules from other MSc courses in the School of Environment and Technology. You can use this flexibility to study related subjects including water and waste-water treatment technology, construction management and sustainable construction.

Core modules cover geotechnical earthquake engineering, dynamics of structures with earthquake engineering applications, seismic design of reinforced concrete members, random vibrations of structures, bridge loads and analysis, rock mechanics, hydrogeology, coastal engineering and wave loading.

Areas of study

• Coastal Engineering and Wave Loading

This module provides a basic understanding of different wave theories and their applications in coastal engineering practice.

You will develop an understanding of the coastal sediment transport processes and the means to deal with issues associated with coastal protection and sea defence.

• Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering

This module provides an understanding of advanced geotechnical design methods with an emphasis on seismic design. It focuses on current design methods for soil and rock structures and foundation systems subject to complex loading conditions.

You will gain experience in using a variety of commercial software.

• Rock Mechanics

The module gives you an understanding of the behaviour of rocks and rock mass and enables you to evaluate the instability of rock slopes and tunnels in order to design reinforcements for unstable rock.

• Dynamics of Structures with Earthquake Engineering Applications

You will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of dynamics of structures. The module then focuses on analytical and numerical methods used to model the response of civil engineering structures subjected to dynamic actions, including harmonic loading, blast and impact loading, and earthquake ground motion.

• Random Vibration of Structures

The module gives you the confidence to model uncertainties involved in the design of structural systems alongside a framework to critically appraise probabilistic-based Eurocode approaches to design.

Stochastic models of earthquake ground motion, wind and wave loading are explored. Probabilistic analysis and design of structures is undertaken through pertinent random vibration theory.

You will become confident with the probabilistic analysis for the design against earthquake, wind and wave loadings through various checkable calculations.

• Repair and Strengthening of Existing Reinforced Concrete Structures

The module gives you an understanding of the types and causes of damage to reinforced concrete structures. It then focuses on current techniques for repair and strengthening of existing structures.

Employability

The course is particularly appropriate for work in structural, geotechnical and coastal engineering.

Graduates have gone on into roles as structural engineers and civil engineers in a number of structural design offices around the world.

Others have been motivated by the research component of the course and followed a PhD programme after graduation.

The automotive electronics engineer has to bring together real-time software, safety critical constraints, sensor electronics, control algorithms, human factors, legislation and ethics into a working package that satisfies multiple stakeholders.

The Ricardo engineering consultancy helped to develop this course, ensuring MSc students come away equipped with industry-relevant skills. Their continued involvement includes offering the use of pioneering industry equipment through the Ricardo Universities IC Engines research facility. They also help to cultivate future engineering talent, both locally and internationally.

On this MSc course you'll explore a range of topics including interconnected communication networks, entertainment systems, safety critical software, diagnostics, alternative fuels and hybrid technologies.

In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE2008), our automotive engineering research group achieved an excellent rating, with 70 per cent of its research rated as internationally excellent or world leading, and 95 per cent deemed to have been internationally recognised.

This MSc is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for further learning for registration as a chartered engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng-accredited BEng or BSc(Hons) undergraduate degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.

Course structure

The course starts in September. You will study four modules each term and will take exams after your Christmas and Easter vacations.

For each taught module you will have between three and four hours' contact with the lecturer each week, alongside further self-study tutorial and laboratory exercises requiring study outside of the class contact time.

After all eight taught modules have been completed you will then begin your individual project and masters dissertation stage. This final stage is full-time, but there are no classes during this phase, which ends in early September.

It is possible to study part-time study, by taking the modules at a slower rate. This can be tailored to fit around any personal or professional commitments that you may have. Please note, however, that there is no evening teaching so if you wish to study part-time then you will need to agree on study leave with your employer in order to attend the classes. The final project phase could be conducted at your place of work in some cases.

Individual projects have included real-time power-train modelling for software in the loop testing, a smart grid system using electric vehicles as an energy storage resource and an experimental investigation of novel fuel injection and ignition systems for a spray-guided gasoline engine.

Our research labs

The Division of Engineering and Product Design’s research and teaching laboratories house a number of engine test cells in which world leading research is carried out. Although these labs centre on cylinders, pistons and valves they are surrounded by complex electronic equipment to control the mechanics and to monitor pressures, temperatures, chemistry and capture high speed events on computer for real-time and post-run analysis.

MSc students often carry out projects in these labs and make their contribution to research or commercial innovation. For details of these state of the art laboratories see Sir Harry Ricardo Laboratories.

Professor Stipidis and his team provide valuable state-of-the-art research into automotive communications architectures and also provide infrastructure for some of the laboratory exercises in the Automotive Communications Systems taught module.

The MSc can also serve as the basis for further study at a doctoral level.

This novel scheme is designed for those working at postgraduate level in industry, or in an area of interest not catered for by the taught masters programme, who wish to have their work accredited for an appropriate academic award.

The course allows you to:

• choose your own study area, enabling you to pursue a topic which suits your work or personal interests
• set your own goals, objectives and timescales in conjunction with your university supervisor, so the programme is your own
• have one-to-one support and guidance from your supervisor enabling you to establish a good relationship and receive the benefit of your their knowledge and expertise
• be able to study in your workplace, part-time over two years, maximising learning opportunities and minimising time away from work
• gain a masters-level qualification through a flexible course which fits with the demands of your job and your lifestyle.

The key to the scheme is the specification of a learning agreement. Each agreement is unique and defined after discussions between the participant, the course leader, the employer (where appropriate) and an academic supervisor.

Course structure

The learning agreement is defined by a number of goals which are developed into learning objectives and activities.

Assessment procedures and criteria are established. A proportion of the goals may, with agreement, be achieved by successful completion of relevant modules taken from existing masters degrees within the university.

The programme is available for all potential masters-level work across a wide range of subjects. Students are examined at the end of their agreed learning programme by written dissertation and through an oral examination.

If a number of people from one company or a group of companies all wish to undertake the course, studying similar topics, the course can be run as a group activity. You will each have individual learning agreements, but there will be a university group facilitator who will meet with you all regularly and run action learning sets.

Teaching is via small, highly interactive lectures and seminars that foster a culture of knowledge sharing, ideas generation, critical thinking and enthusiastic debate.

You’ll study a combination of core modules and options, assessed through:

-Policy briefs

In the summer, you work on a research-based dissertation. We encourage interaction, collaboration and creativity. You’re invited to participate in our programme of research seminars as well as conferences and workshops.

Careers

With the growing importance of energy on political, corporate and even social agendas around the world, there is increasing demand for energy policy professionals.

All our graduates have successfully obtained employment in a variety of sectors. For example, recent MSc graduates have gained employment in:
-International organisations (such as the OECD, UNDP, UNEP, IEA, and IREAN)
-Government departments (such as the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change, Government of British Columbia, Canada)
-Local authorities (such as the Brighton & Hove Council sustainability team)
-Businesses (such as RWE npower, Ecofys, EDF, Unilever, Southern Solar, Renaissance Re, Centro de Apoio a Inovação Social-CAIS)
-NGOs (such as the International Social Science Council, Green Jobs Alliance, People and Planet)

Other graduates have gone on to work for independent consultancies, or to study for PhDs in this area.
