What’s it like to study a Masters in Bradford?
Bradford played an important role in the Industrial Revolution, producing large quantities of coal and iron from the late 18th century onwards. The city became known as the ‘wool capital of the world’ and this legacy lives on in the form of Saltaire and its Salts Mill, a UNESCO-listed site. Saltaire was a model village built on the outskirts of Bradford by wool magnate Titus Salt to house the workers at his mill in the mid-19th century, providing an early blueprint for urban planning and welfare.
Along with its industrial heritage, Bradford has been recognised by UNESCO for the city’s long relationship with cinema. In 2009, Bradford became the world’s first UNESCO City of Film, a legacy which lives on in the form of institutions like the National Science and Media Museum, Pictureville Cinema and Europe’s only Cinerama screen (an ultra-wide, panoramic film format).
Bradford also has a strong connection with art, theatre and literature. Pop art pioneer David Hockney spent his formative years in the city and many of his works can be enjoyed in Bradford-based collections, while the Bradford Alhambra, built in 1914, is an iconic theatre venue that now hosts a range of performances, from musicals and drama to opera and stand-up comedy. The Brontë sisters spent most of their lives in nearby Howarth, where the Brontë Parsonage Museum is a popular pilgrimage destination for literature fans from across the world.
Bradford also offers excellent opportunities to explore the great outdoors, with the windswept moorlands that inspired the Brontës and the Yorkshire Dales National Park easily reachable by train.
There is a range of housing options for students in Bradford. The university has its own ‘student village’ – the Green – located close to the student union, while private accommodation is readily available and affordable.

The University of Bradford was founded in 1966 and provides Masters programmes in a range of different disciplines. Around 15% of its students are international, coming from more than 150 countries.
Bradford College University Centre also offers Masters courses in Visual Arts and Education.

Although Bradford is no longer the world capital of wool, the city (and the wider region) has a large, diverse economy. Manufacturing and engineering are still important in Bradford, while the professional, financial and digital sectors provide thousands of jobs.
