This programme explores the nature, dynamics and complexity of the links between peace, conflict, security, development, and democratisation in Africa, with a focus on cross-cutting thematic issues including armed conflict, poverty and underdevelopment, HIV/AIDS, resources and terrorism, among others. Delivered by staff with a high profile in academic and policy circles, the programme promotes an advanced understanding of the competing theories, concepts, interpretations, discourses and policies on history, politics, conflict and development in Africa, and their application to contemporary issues in a global, regional and local context (humanitarian, developmental, peace and security related) that underlie interventions in Africa, and their consequences.

You will also acquire subject-specific knowledge and understanding of methodologies of conflict analysis, management, resolution and peace-building in an African context.

No prior knowledge of Africa or African issues is assumed.

You will receive 20 hours of tuition each week for 6 or 10 weeks in classes with a maximum of 16 students. You will be taught by highly qualified and experienced staff using up-to-date teaching methods, materials and equipment. Your course will include:

Biomedical Sciences involves a multidisciplinary approach to the study of human health and disease. This range of biological and molecular sciences underpins the scientific basis of investigating the human body in health and disease, enabling diagnosis and therapeutic intervention.

There is a demand for graduates with advanced biomedical training able to apply their skills to research, education, regulatory approval, diagnostic services and the commercialisation of biomedical information.

Our course is designed to allow students to specialise in one key area of human disease from: Cancer Biology, Medical Biochemistry, Medical Cell Biology or Medical Microbiology.

Overall, the course will equip graduating students for careers in the private (e.g. pharmaceutical, biotechnology or food industry, forensic/veterinary laboratories) or public (e.g. academia, National Health Service (NHS)) sectors.

Professional Accreditation

The course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). However, completion of this programme does not automatically qualify graduates to become registered biomedical scientists. In the UK this is now a legally protected title for individuals who are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). HCPC registration requires completion of an approved academic programme plus a period of training in an approved laboratory to develop appropriate practical skills and ensure competence. However, it is anticipated that the programme will be acceptable in partial fulfilment for award of the title of Chartered Scientist.

This is an exciting time to be involved in cancer therapeutics. Based upon a greater understanding of the molecular aspects of cancer, new opportunities for therapeutic intervention have emerged that are effectively 'target orientated'. These new therapeutics are quite distinct from the classical chemotherapeutic agents and they offer the prospect of truly selective cancer therapies that are tailored towards the individual patient's tumour. Cancer pharmacology plays a key role in drug development. In both the laboratory and the clinic, cancer pharmacology has had to adapt to the changing face of drug development by establishing experimental models and target orientated approaches.

The programme is designed to provide you with a 'state-of-the-art' course in modern cancer pharmacology that meets the demand of employers and provides an expert view of the available cancer medicines and the development of new cancer therapies.

It promotes advanced scholarship within specialised areas at the same time as the development of key transferable skills (in IT, communication, and time management) and research techniques. The taught component of the course provides the in depth knowledge and skills necessary to work in cancer research, and is delivered across 2 semesters through lectures, workshops, practicals and 1-to-1 tutorials with ICT staff. You will then join one of our research teams to complete the MSc research project.

Conflict resolution is now a global activity and concerns engaging both academics and practitioners in finding durable solutions to the most pressing conflicts of the twenty-first century.

This course attracts students from all over the world, and the optional modules reflect the key expertise of the faculty. You will acquire subject-specific knowledge and understanding of:
-The theories and concepts of peace and conflict and their application to global, regional and local contexts
-The emergence, nature and significance of conflict analysis/ conflict resolution as a distinct field of academic enquiry

This course has been established in recognition of the way that concerns about the relationship between security and development have increasingly guided policy action and academic analysis on a range of issues in the post-Cold War era. Indeed, the merger of security and development is generally considered to be one of the defining features of the post-Cold War security debate.

Indeed, the merger of security and development is generally considered to be one of the defining features of the post-Cold War security debate. For supporters, this conceptual merger has been central to the success of recent campaigns to raise aid, eliminate debt, address global ills such as landmines and promote human security inside weak and post-conflict states in particular. For critics, the linking of development and security has unduly securitised the representation of a range of developing world actors and has legitimised a variety of quasi-imperial Western interventions ranging from the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan to pervasive programmes of economic, political and societal reform inside formerly sovereign states.

This course draws on the work of Peace Studies staff who have made important contributions to the academic and policy debates on the securitisation of development, the relationship between intervention, peacebuilding and the liberal peace and explored alternative models of both security and development. The course is particularly distinctive because it reflects both the critical approach to analysis of the security-development nexus adopted by staff involved in delivering this programme whilst also drawing on the extensive experience of staff in providing policy advice to a range of governments and other agencies.

The main goal of MSc Cyber Security is to prepare professionally trained graduates for industry. It has been designed to offer graduates the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of cyber security as a discipline. The focus within this programme on the principles, technologies and practices of cyber security helps you to gain the appropriate skills for future PhD studies and research careers as well as to become competent practitioners. The programme comprises particular developments in security with a firm base in academic research and also offers the opportunity for you to study selected topics in advanced computer science.

Included in the programme is the opportunity to enhance industry relevant skills with study in ISO27001 Lead Implementer and Ethical Hacking. These skill areas were highlighted by past alumni and industry practitioners for inclusion in the programme.
