About us
Formed in August 2009 (through a merger of the former Schools of Biological and Chemical Sciences and Crystallography) the Department of Biological Sciences continues to build on the many strengths of these schools so as to allow sustained future growth in all areas. The Head of Department is Professor Carolyn Moores.
Our research programmes are part of the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, a joint institute between Birkbeck and UCL that seeks to integrate techniques from the chemical and physical sciences to provide insight into the molecular basis of biological processes. In 2008, the Research Assessment Exercise rated 85% of our research as having international impact, with 15% receiving the highest possible rating of world-leading.
The ISMB provides a vibrant environment for interdisciplinary research and in 2010 academic staff in the department of biological sciences were in receipt of £15.5 million research grant funding.
Many of our achievements have led to greater understanding of the biological processes that lead to human disease and have potential applications in drug design. Find out more about our research programmes and our recent discoveries.
Our analytical bioscience postgraduate course provides hands-on experience and training in a wide range of analysis techniques and instrumentation used in the molecular biosciences, biomedical and pharmaceutical sectors. Read more
Our analytical chemistry postgraduate course delivers comprehensive training in analytical chemistry, with a specialist module in clinical analysis. Read more
Our MSc Bioinformatics provides you with high-quality online training in bioinformatics. It is a distance learning only course run in parallel with an MRes course that includes a larger research component. Read more
An MPhil/PhD is an advanced postgraduate research degree that requires original research and the submission of a substantial dissertation of 60,000 to 100,000 words. Read more
The MRes Chemical Research is ideal if you wish to further your research career or update your training. Read more
Global infectious diseases have set off alarms with serious public health emergencies from time to time. Read more
Our MSc Microbiology is a research-based degree, providing you with essential training in scientific research methodology and data analysis, as well as specific scientific techniques appropriate to the research microbiologist. Read more
The MRes Structural Biology is an intensive, high-quality introduction to research in structural and computational biology, which are key to the dissection of macromolecular 'machines' and cellular pathways of medical interest. Read more
Structural biology allows you to understand how macromolecules work at the atomic level of detail. This is important particularly in designing drugs which act at the molecular level to affect macromolecules. Read more
