​Course Content​​

The programme will emphasise the development of analytical and critical skills and on problem identification and analysis within a Biomedical Sciences context. You will be taught by a team of experienced academics, researchers and professionally qualified staff. A number of the teaching team are also HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists.

Please note there is no guarantee that all modules will be offered every year. Provision is subject to student numbers and viability. An additional three modules are required for the research dissertation.

If you are admitted to the Master's scheme but subsequently are unable or not permitted to progress, you may, depending upon the number of credits attained at the time of exit, qualify for one of the following awards:
- Postgraduate Certificate (PgC): No fewer than 60 credits
- Postgraduate Diploma (PgD): No fewer than 120 credits
- Master of Science (MSc): No fewer than 180 credits

Candidature for the MSc is five years for part-time students i.e. the course must be completed and dissertation submitted within five years of registering.

Learning & Teaching​

​A variety of teaching strategies are employed to reflect the following:
- the requirements of the particular topic
- the existence of background experience within the group
- the level and type of study required at level 7

Lectures are the most prevalent teaching method for the introduction to module material, where the major function is to provide a basic framework, to generate interest in the subject concerned and to explain complex points. Lectures are complemented by tutorial sessions designed to encourage a more detailed examination of issues. Students are issued, in their module handbook, with a programme schedule of topics to be covered in lectures and supporting tutorials for all subjects, along with lists of references to guide their supplementary reading. The VLE will also host supporting materials.

Tutorials and related small group work is an important part of teaching and learning. It encourages the depth of discussion and application appropriate to higher degree work. The major aim is to develop skills related to thinking, discussion and presentation of information. It helps to develop analytical and critical appraisal skills.

Practical Work/Demonstration sessions in certain modules, such as Analytical and Diagnostic Techniques, Molecular Biology and the Dissertation, complement and extend the theoretical aspects of study and help to develop the students' skills of investigation, analysis, critical evaluation and reflection.

Case Studies are used throughout the programme as a means of encouraging students to apply their theoretical knowledge of biomedical science to real patients and thus take a holistic view of diagnostic medicine. Real cases are used and students are encouraged to integrate knowledge from a number of modules and to reflect on the possible outcomes
In addition to the contact hours per modules (approx. 40 hours per 20 credit module) the student will be expected to undertake a certain number of student led hours (approx. 160 per 20 credit module) to achieve an overall 200 hours of student effort per 20 credit module.

- Academic Support
Students are supported at each stage of learning and assessment. The Programme Director is responsible for overall academic management of the programme and support for the student. Module Leaders are responsible for academic guidance and support for each module offered and for academic feedback on student progress. The Project Manager is responsible for all the process regarding the project work and the dissertation. Personal tutorials will be arranged with your Personal tutor throughout the programme, and if you are experiencing any difficulties with your study for example problems with coursework or preparation for examinations, then there will always be a member of staff - the Programme Director, Module Leader or personal tutor available to assist you.

Assessment

It is recognised that assessment is a necessary part of an evaluation of a student's suitability for an award and involves testing and developing the higher-level cognitive skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation. For this reason, assessment is designed to measure the extent to which the student is able to satisfy the intended learning outcome of each module. The learning outcomes are assessed within the modules through a variety of methods including:
- unseen examinations
- essays
- practical based laboratory exercises
- laboratory reports
- case studies
- poster presentation
- case study presentation
- abstract writing and journal article reviews

Time limited examinations are seen as an end of module check on student academic attainment in certain modules where a detailed understanding of contemporary scientific thinking, often research lead, is deemed to be an essential currency.

In addition, assignments are used either in addition to or as an alternative to written examinations in certain modules where they best reflect breadth of understanding.

The assessment schedule for the taught modules will be supplied by the programme director at the beginning of the programme. The module leader will supply the assessment titles and guidelines/criteria to undertake the assignments and provide feedback to the students.

The programme's core modules are centred on enhancing awareness of the professional issues and research applications associated with being a sport and exercise scientist in alignment with the informed practice of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

The option modules are structured to allow students to tailor their programme based on personal interests within the respective disciplines. Students may alternatively maintain a breadth in their areas of study by combining multiple discipline-based option modules.

Learning & Teaching​

​All modules, except the independent research project (dissertation) module, are 20 credit modules. Timetabled delivery for each taught module usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lecture, seminars, practical laboratories/ workshops and tutorials.

Modules are usually taught through a combination of lecture, seminar and practical based sessions. Group discussions and tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) that provides learning resources over and above that found in the learning centre (library). All students are supported with access to a personal tutor who is usually the Programme Director of their course.

Assessment

With the exception of the independent research project (dissertation), all module assessment is based upon 5,000 words or equivalent. Assessment methods are designed to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of theoretical, applied and professional practice issues and include coursework essays, needs analyses and the design of interventions, research reports, presentations and critique.

The independent research project (dissertation) can be presented either as a traditional 12,000 word thesis or in the format of a journal article.

Employability & Careers​

Many graduates of the programme are currently studying for a research degree (MPhil/PhD) in a related subject within Cardiff Metropolitan and at other UK institutions. Graduates have typically pursued careers as clinical and applied science consultants, lecturers (further and higher education) and, in the fitness and training industry. Recent graduates have also secured employment as applied sport scientists in the National Institutes of Sport (e.g. English Institute of Sport, Sport Wales), within UK academic departments and within clinical practices.

The programme provides doctors, physiotherapists and osteopaths interested in sport and exercise medicine with:

Teaching and learning methods will include workshops, lectures, clinical assessments, student presentations and individual study. Clinical skills will be taught in small groups with students required to participate as patients, examiners and examinees. Students will be able to access remotely all lectures via a virtual learning environment; internet and online search facilities can be accessed via the university learning resources web page.

Participation in a clinical placement in sport and exercise medicine environment/sports injuries clinic; delivery from a wide range of professionals involved in sport and exercise medicine and sport and exercise science, and the opportunity to work with fellow professionals who are involved in supporting elite performers at national and international level will also be offered as part of the programme.

Assessment

Visiting lecturers, drawn from the UK's most experienced strength and conditioning practitioners, complement the lectures given by the Cardiff School of Sport's specialist staff in strength and conditioning and associated discipline areas. A master's degree course that has been designed and will be delivered by sports journalism industry professionals to create practitioners of Sport Broadcast and prepare them to be industry ready for employment in sport broadcast journalism. The master's degree course has been written in collaboration with the Broadcast Journalism Training Council who will make an accreditation visit in 2017.

Students will develop and master a wide spectrum of broadcast journalism production skills, learn to self-shoot and edit and sharpen their journalistic instinct and editorial judgment. They will critically examine the reciprocal relationship between socio-political issues, modern media coverage and professional sport. Students will also study elements of media law, and analyse how ethics, a sense of fairness, impartiality, accuracy and a robust knowledge of regulations and rights play a crucial part in operating within the modern broadcasting landscape.

The inclusion of a significant work placement module (60 credits) in this sports journalism degree offers the opportunity to work in our internal broadcast unit for a minimum of 15 sport-news production days and provides a second placement opportunity with one of our external broadcast partners. We have placement opportunities with all the major broadcasters in Wales and further afield for students who are prepared to travel; these include a number of Welsh medium placement opportunities. Through this, students will gain practical, real-world experience of various broadcast roles; presenter, reporter, producer, director, videographer, camera operator, floor manager, video editor, social media producer, commentator and all-round broadcast journalist. Students will learn to research, network and build contacts, elevating their sports reporting and writing skills to the next level and master the art of story-telling and content making in the fast-changing digital age through social media platforms, blogging and podcasts.

Due to the popularity of the postgraduate sport programmes, please ensure you submit your application as early as possible within the year. Programmes will be closed over the summer of 2018 when full capacity is reached. Please contact the programme director for further information.

Course Content

Proposed modules on the programme include: 80 taught credits, a 60 credit professional broadcasting placement module and a 40 credit production dissertation. Proposed titles of the modules are: 

  • Television Broadcasting (20 credits) 
  • Radio and Digital Broadcasting (20 credits)
  • Research Skills in Journalism (20 credits)
  • Ethics, Media Law and Landscape (20 credits) 
  • Professional Broadcasting Placement (60 credits) 
  • Production Dissertation (40 credits) 

There are no option modules for the programme.

Learning & Teaching

All modules, with the exception of the Production Dissertation and the Professional Broadcasting Placement are 20 credit modules. Allocated teaching timetabled (contact time) delivery for such modules usually equals a minimum of 30 hours of time supplemented with up to 60 hours of directed study time and up to 60 hours of independent study time. Contact time is normally made up of lectures, seminars, practical laboratories/workshops, fieldwork, professional visits, placement learning and individual and/or group tutorials. Group discussions and practical tasks are frequently used. Student learning is supported through the use of our Virtual Learning Environment (Moodle) that provides learning resources over and above that found in the learning centre (library). All learners are supported with access to a personal tutor. Initially, this is usually the Programme Director with the dissertation supervisor adopting this responsibility at a later date within the students' programme of study. All students are supported with a professional placement supervisor from both the University and industry when undertaking the Professional Broadcasting Placement module.

Assessment

This programme will be assessed through coursework, work placement assessments, portfolios of creative work and group tasks. 

All students will receive support for assessment through academic support in the library, formative tasks and peer assessment.

Employability & Careers

A 60 credit work placement is designed to ensure that graduates of the programme have had significant “real world experience” and engagement with the industry that will make them uniquely prepared for work in the Sport Broadcast Industry. With its focus on skill acquisition together with academic reflection on the socio-political implications of Sport, graduates from this programme will be able to meet the needs of a rapidly developing Sport Broadcast industry.

​The Master of Research (MRes) programme provides high quality and professionally relevant training in research methods and analysis for health, psychology and biomedical science graduates.

Through the taught modules students will develop their research skills, including critically appraising literature, developing research proposals, laboratory techniques, project management, presenting findings (through oral, written and digital media) and applying for funding. Students will be introduced to a wide range of methodologies and practical techniques relevant to their discipline. Training will be provided in research governance and ethical procedures to ensure students are prepared for work as professional researchers.

Students will conduct two substantial research studies in a topic of their choice, supervised by experienced members of academic staff. These studies will be written up in the form of journal articles and will form a substantial component of the credits for the MRes award.

This award prepares you for a future in research and progression on to PhD studies. 

Course Content

Students will complete the following modules over the course of one full year (full-time) or two years (part-time); modules can be viewed HERE.

There are subject specific and three shared modules which prepare you for your area of research and develop your skills as a researcher.

Dissertation

Students will complete a dissertation proposal (10 credits) and associated ethics application. This is followed by the dissertation which counts for 100 credits. The dissertation is written as two research papers which address two discrete areas of the research project. The dissertation will involve all the elements of the research process from the design of the study, data collection, analysis of findings and write up in the format of a journal article. Students will be supervised by two members of staff to complete their dissertation. Students will be matched with appropriate staff members who have expertise in the chosen topic and/or methodology. 

Learning & Teaching

The MRes programme comprises 180 credits of which 110 are gained from completing a dissertation proposal and dissertation on the students chosen topic. Therefore the programme is largely independent research, with the support of academic supervisors. The 70 credits of specialised research taught modules ensure you will be equipped with the knowledge, practical and professional skills to engage in your chosen research area and also to provide you with a broader knowledge base of research methodologies. The taught based modules will involve a variety of different learning and teaching methods including: lectures, seminars, small group work, workshops, online learning, tutorials and self-directed learning. 

Each student will be allocated two members of staff to supervise their dissertation and a separate personal tutor. Your personal tutor will support you with pastoral care and advice for career planning, e.g. supporting you to complete a personal development plan. 

Assessment

Each module has its own form of assessment. The majority of modules are assessed via coursework, including research reviews, reports, essays and presentations. The dissertation will be written up in the format of two journal articles.

Employability & Careers

MRes graduates will be well placed for PhD level study or a career that involves carrying out, critically appraising or applying research findings. Evidence based practice means that a knowledge and understanding of research is essential in all health related domains so that health care providers are able to interpret previous research findings, as well as contributing to the process of designing and carrying out research projects. Graduates will also be well equipped in roles which involve scientific writing, analysis of research, designing or administering research projects and development of research portfolios.
