You’ll share a breadth of experience – the multi-disciplinary nature of the taught component means you will share a broad experience of methodological and research issues. Allied with subject specific supervision, this will allow you to develop a unique awareness of knowledge and experiences across the natural and social sciences in addition to a focus on your own research topic.

Biosciences pathway:
Students pursuing the bioscience pathway would be expected to have research which falls within the areas of the members of the biomolecular research group (BMRG). The BMRG have specialities in cell and molecular biology, protein science, chemical and structural biology, cancer biology, bioinformatics, metabolomics and evolutionary genetics. A selection of current research projects include:

*Development of fluorescent chemosensors for medical applications, biochemical investigations, environmental monitoring, biotechnology and drug discovery.
*Investigating the protein structure and biological control potential of plant lectins.
*Studying organism development and ageing with respect to environmental stimuli.
*Studying prion protein development and maintenance in yeast.
*Investigating the therapeutic potential of novel animal venoms as anti-microbial, anti-parasitic and anti-cancer agents.
*Computationally investigating the molecular dynamics of cell skeletal components.
*Investigating mammalian embryology and comparative genomic studies in a variety of avian species.
*Investigating the biochemical and biophysical properties of muscle proteins.
*Investigating alternative splicing and the circadian clock in plant stress responses.
*Deployment of molecular techniques an attempt to understand the patterns in the spatial distribution of organisms.

Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX) enables the enrichment of oligonucleotide aptamers from highly diverse libraries of unique sequences. Nucleic acid aptamers are short, single-stranded oligonucleotides that form three-dimensional structures capable of high affinity binding to specific targets. High-affinity aptamers have been identified against a broad range of proteins, carbohydrates and small molecules. NGS technology and sophisticated bioinformatics analyses are applied to SELEX campaigns with the aim of early identification of aptamer families. The project will focus on the identification of novel aptamers to microbial targets. Bioinformatic analyses will be applied to understand and direct the outputs from SELEX screening campaigns.
Centauri Therapeutics is a UK-based biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of novel molecules targeting life threatening diseases. We are interested in the application of SELEX technology to the identification of therapeutic aptamers. We are looking for highly-motivated and talented people who are about to complete, or have recently completed, their degree-level studies. Candidates must show enthusiasm and aptitude for bioinformatics (ideally with Unix/programming experience) alongside molecular and cellular biology laboratory research. The student will predominantly be based at Discovery Park, Sandwich but will also spend time at the Canterbury Campus of Christchurch University.

Assessment

Summative assessments will be individual in nature (group work will be conducted in a formative environment), and will comprise 20 credit modules of practical assessment, case study presentation, critical review, oral presentation, examination, essay, portfolio and exam. The title of the MA by Research (Physical Education and Physical Activity), is intentionally very broad to allow you to specialise in an area in which you are particularly interested.

The project may develop from recent undergraduate work or from an aspect of your current employment which you wish to unpick, extend or challenge, for example in the areas of Physical Education, Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Physical Activity, or Primary Physical Education or Coaching.

You will be supported through regular tutorials from your specialist supervisor, as well as by a second supervisor, who will bring knowledge and expertise in research methodologies.

The supervisor's role would be to help you select the appropriate research method, to support you in devising and producing the project and to aid you in setting this this within the critical framework of Physical Education, and or Physical Activity.

Assessment

The programme is assessed through the submission of a piece of academic writing between 25,000 and 30,000 words in length. There are no examinations, including oral examinations. You will meet regularly with first supervisor, virtually or physically and will present your work in progress to the full Supervisory Panel half way through your registration period. Following advice from the Panel you will complete your final dissertation submission.

The programme leads to the award of an MA by Research, which is a significant qualification in its own right, but you could also continue ultimately on to PhD or EdD programmes. This exciting course “develops innovative training provision which cuts across disciplines and works at the boundaries with other scientific traditions”. It explicitly recognises the need to “offer high-quality integrated core provision in research skills and research methods training as well as subject-specific training” while using “flexible and imaginative methods of training provision and delivery”. (ESRC 2009).

It offers you the opportunity to complete an MSc in your chosen subject area over the course of one year (two years if part time). Beginning in early September, the course combines 60 credits of taught modules in the first (Michaelmas) term with 120 credits of research during the remainder of the year. The taught component of the course will be multi-disciplinary in nature with lectures and seminars led by experts from across the range of subjects in the Faculty.

You’ll follow a course of advanced study and research under the guidance of academic tutors and supervisors. This MSc aims to develop researchers who are conceptually aware, who can utilise a range of skills and methods, and who, in a multi-disciplinary environment, can practice and develop their own research capabilities, and disseminate that research in a meaningful way.

Format

You will work closely with a supervisor on a research topic(s) leading to research output(s). The choice of topic will depend on your subject area, your expertise and that of your supervisor. In some instances you will have a research topic identified in advance by your supervisor, working on a specific project within existing research clusters in the Faculty.

Your MSc will be awarded based on grades obtained for the 40 credits of taught modules and 140 credits for a dissertation or other research-based outputs. The 40 credits taught component of the course is comprised of two modules:
• Research Praxis
• Research Methods

In the first week of your studies you will meet with your supervisor and familiarise yourself with your research topic.

The second week of the course will be an intensive week of lectures and practicals spread across the two modules. The following six weeks will include a range of optional sessions in both modules, or some specific sessions identified for students in specific subject areas.

After the second week all lectures, seminars and practicals will be held on Wednesday afternoons.

Assessment

Assessment will take many forms including traditional essays, team assignments, reflective logs, oral presentations, etc. All assessments will be completed before the end of the first term. You must pass all modules (40 credits) to progress to the research stage of the course. If any module is failed you’ll have one opportunity to resubmit prior to continuing with the research component of the module.

The largest part of the assessment will be based on your research output(s). Working with your Supervisor, you will have to decide what format the research output(s) will take. It may be a dissertation of approximately 16,000-20,000 word equivalent or a couple of research reports or research papers each of approximately 8,000 words in length. It may be possible that the research output could take some different form, e.g. an invention or patent, but a written component would still be required.
