The course is aimed at students with a background in sport sciences who wish to take a broad-based degree that combines a range of self-selected modules from across the two specialist pathways: Human Performance and Sport Psychology.

It includes the module ‘Physical Activity and Health’ in which contemporary issues such as obesity and injury rehabilitation are examined from a multi and interdisciplinary perspective.

Aims

You will have significant scope to tailor a programme of study to your specific needs.

You will build upon your existing knowledge and extend your understanding of selected areas in sport, health and exercise sciences.

You will encounter a range of learning experiences designed to enhance critical analysis and independence of thought.

Assessment

Your academic performance will be assessed in a variety of ways. Assessment procedures include essays, case studies, oral presentations, poster presentations, laboratory report writing and computer-based tests. Formal written examinations constitute part of the assessment in some modules.

In addition, you will need to submit, and pass, a research dissertation.

About the course

The two MSc programmes in Biomedical Engineering draw on the wide experience of Brunel's academic staff, which ranges from the development of equipment and experiments for use in space, to research carried out in collaboration with hospitals, biomedical companies and research institutions.

Four (compulsory) taught modules and two optional streams are available. Students can apply to one of the two named degree title awards - 'Biomedical, Genetics and Tissue Engineering' or 'Biomedical, Biomechanics and Bioelectronics Engineering'.

The programme has a strong research and development emphasis and students will develop expertise in advanced product development and research. It aims to provide an overall knowledge base, skills and competencies, which are required in biomedical engineering, research activities and in related fields.

Aims

The modern healthcare industry is commercially-driven and fast moving – putting a premium on recruits who bring strong research experience. Biomedical engineering is a new and rapidly emerging field of engineering to biological and clinical problems. It relies on the methodologies and techniques developed in more traditional engineering fields, further advanced and adapted to the particular complexity associated with biological systems.

These applications vary from design, development and operation of complex medical devices, used in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment, to the characterisation of tissue behaviour in health and disease, and theoretical models that enhance the understanding of complex biomedical issues.

As well as giving a solid scientific understanding, this course provides students with an understanding of the commercial, ethical, legal and regulatory requirements of the industry.

Graduates acquire the skills that are essential to the modern biomedical and healthcare industry, gaining expertise in management, product innovation, development and research.

Scientific understanding is just one part of medical engineering and this course also addresses commercial, ethical, legal and regulatory requirements, with input from Brunel's extensive industrial contacts.

Excellent facilities
We have extensive and well-equipped laboratories - with notable strengths in fluid and biofluid mechanics, IC engines, vibrations, building service engineering, and structural testing. Our computing facilities are diverse and are readily available to all students. The University is fully networked with both Sun workstations and PCs. Advanced software is available for finite and boundary element modelling of structures, finite volume modelling of flows, and for the simulation of varied control systems, flow machines, combustion engines, suspensions, built environment, and other systems of interest to the research groups.

Foundation course available
The  Pre-Masters is a full-time 14-week course for international students who have marginally fallen below the postgraduate direct entry level and would like to progress onto a Master's degree course in the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences. It combines academic study, intensive English Language preparation, study skills and an orientation programme.

Accreditation

This programme is seeking accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) post the recent change in available degree routes. The IMechE formerly accredited the MSc Biomedical Engineering and we anticipate no problems in extending this accreditation to the new routes.

Teaching

The taught modules are delivered to students over two terms; Term 1 (September – December) and Term 2 (January – April) of each academic year. The taught modules are examined at the end of each term, and the students begin working on their dissertations on a part-time basis in term 2, then full-time during the months of May to September.

This degree programme provides an exciting opportunity for advanced study in Evolutionary Psychology, ie psychological science informed by explicit consideration of the fact that the human mind, like the human body, is a product of evolutionary processes. It is taught in association with the Centre for Culture and Evolutionary Psychology (C-CEP), and the Centre for Cognition and Neuroimaging (CCNI) at Brunel.

The degree programme aims to provide students with an understanding of how evolutionary theory can provide a framework for the study of human psychology and behaviour. Students will acquire comprehensive knowledge of important theoretical issues, research findings and recent advances in evolutionary psychology. You will study concepts, findings and recent advances in evolutionary biology, animal behaviour and behavioural ecology that are critical for research in evolutionary psychology. Moreover there will be the opportunity to take an optional module in either Cognitive Neuroscience or Cross-Cultural Psychology.

The programme team includes, Nicholas Pound PhD (McMaster), Andrew Clark PhD (McMaster), Michael Price PhD (UCSB) and Achim Schützwohl PhD (University of Bielefeld). In addition, there are opportunities for dissertation research projects to be co-supervised by psychologists with expertise in other areas of Psychology (eg cognitive neuroscience, social psychology).

At Brunel we have extensive facilities for human subjects research (including EEG, fMRI, motion capture and 3D body scanning).

Who is this Degree For?
This course is particularly suited to students in the life sciences or social sciences who are interested in finding out how principles from evolutionary biology can provide a framework for the scientific study of human psychology and behaviour.

The MSc will provide students with the knowledge and skills required to go on to do PhD research not just in Evolutionary Psychology, but also in other areas of Psychology and the Biological and Social Sciences. Moreover, students will acquire analytic and research skills that will be useful in diverse areas of employment including governmental and non-government research organisations, and the private sector.

The MSc course in Molecular Medicine and Cancer Research aims to provide specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in molecular and cellular genetics relevant for human diseases in the context of the scientific and clinical problem of human cancer.

It focuses on the development of research skills in medical genetics and human diseases, and is designed to enable you to develop the ability to become an independent and creative scientist, able to form useful working hypotheses and to analyse data appropriately.

Taught modules will focus on how a greater understanding of these processes has created new avenues and targets for the therapeutic intervention in various forms of cancer.

Aims

Cancer is a complex and multi-factorial disease. For the development of any novel and specific therapeutic strategy, it is important to understand the complexity of pathogenesis and genetics that can lead to cancer. This course addresses various molecular and cellular aspects relevant for cancer research.

Course Content

The course is offered on a one-year full-time basis, taught over three terms, or on a two-year part-time basis, taught over six terms.

You will complete six modules in total. Four modules will each be taught over a two-week period in a ‘block’ mode. These taught modules will not run concurrently allowing you to focus on one module at a time and will help promote better time management skills. All lecture material will be available via Vista and will be accessible from your home computer.

You will take a Research Planning module to develop skills required for your dissertation. You will then study a unique Research
Dissertation module over a 9 month (full-time) or 18 month (part-time) period, to allow you to conduct a detailed investigation into a research question of your choice.

If in full-time employment, and attending the course on part-time mode, it may be possible to conduct the research dissertation at the workplace.

Assessment

The course is structured around a programme of lectures, seminars, practical classes, directed reading and coursework. You will be assessed by written examination and coursework, laboratory reports, oral and poster presentation and dissertation thesis writing.

A master’s degree is awarded if you reach the necessary standard on the taught part of the course and submit a dissertation of the required standard. The pass grade for all modules and the dissertation is 50%.

A master’s degree requires 180 credits, of which 75 are accounted for by the dissertation. A Graduate or Postgraduate Certificate can be awarded if between 60 and 105 credits are gained in the taught part of the course. The name of the certificate will be determined by the actual grades achieved.

Special Features

Through an enthusiastic, innovative and research-driven approach, our teaching will reflect the fast changing nature of the biomedical research (with specific emphasis to human genome, molecular medicine and cancer research).

Brunel University London is research led and students attending either course will have the opportunity to conduct a 9-month research dissertation as a part of the MSc course.

Students will be given a choice of research topics and will be normally associated with one of the research centres within Biosciences.

This new and innovative Masters programme caters for the current global need for toxicologists and ecotoxicologists who are competent in conducting hazard and risk evaluation of chemical substances.


Aims
The programme aims at providing students with an advanced and up-to-date understanding of the effects of chemicals on human and environmental health and the resulting impact on chemical risk assessment and regulation. The programme covers both human and ecotoxicological risk assessment and includes modules on topical areas, such as mixtures toxicology, endocrine disruption and computational toxicology. Some modules have been designed specifically to be offered as short-term training programmes for professionals


The course is suitable for graduates interested in obtaining a qualification in human and environmental health, as well as students already in full time employment who require either formal qualifications or intend to revalidate their qualifications in toxicology. This will contribute to their continuing professional development (CPD) and towards the requirements for the UK Register of Toxicologists.

The MSc in Toxicology and Risk Assessment comprises a total of 8 taught modules, including 6 compulsory modules and 2 (out of 3) optional modules.
