What’s it like to study a Masters in Berlin?

Berlin has had a rich and varied history as a centre of European culture and intellectual inquiry. It was one of the major cities of the Enlightenment in Europe and was also the centre of German Expressionism in the 20th century.

Following the end of the Second World War, the city was partitioned and the Berlin Wall was built to separate the two halves of the city. Its destruction in 1989 was a definitive moment in modern history and has continued to be celebrated in cultural works and events that have made Berlin a landmark of political progress.

Contemporary Berlin is a tolerant, diverse city with world-class cultural institutions and plenty of diversions to keep an adventurous postgraduate student entertained. Berlin’s Museuminsel (‘Museum Island’) is home to a clutch of excellent museums and galleries, while the German Reichstag is an iconic parliament building whose modern dome offers panoramic views over the cityscape.

Travelling between Berlin’s many distinct neighbourhoods is made convenient by the city’s excellent public transport system, which combines buses, trams, underground and overground trains in a well-integrated network. Berlin has plenty of interesting green spaces to enjoy, from the massive Tempelhofer Feld (a former airfield) to the quirky Mauerpark, situated along the former border of the Berlin Wall.

Universities in Berlin

Berlin’s four largest research universities are the Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, Technical University of Berlin and the Berlin University of the Arts. All are internationally acclaimed for the quality of their research and training.
