We've been helping students find the right postgraduate course for over a decade.
As well as being Germany’s capital, Berlin is also the country’s largest city, the second most populous city in the European Union and an important European higher education hub. There are many universities and higher education institutions in Berlin, with around 180,000 students in the city.
Berlin has had a rich and varied history as a centre of European culture and intellectual inquiry. It was one of the major cities of the Enlightenment in Europe and was also the centre of German Expressionism in the 20th century.
Following the end of the Second World War, the city was partitioned and the Berlin Wall was built to separate the two halves of the city. Its destruction in 1989 was a definitive moment in modern history and has continued to be celebrated in cultural works and events that have made Berlin a landmark of political progress.
Contemporary Berlin is a tolerant, diverse city with world-class cultural institutions and plenty of diversions to keep an adventurous postgraduate student entertained. Berlin’s Museuminsel (‘Museum Island’) is home to a clutch of excellent museums and galleries, while the German Reichstag is an iconic parliament building whose modern dome offers panoramic views over the cityscape.
Travelling between Berlin’s many distinct neighbourhoods is made convenient by the city’s excellent public transport system, which combines buses, trams, underground and overground trains in a well-integrated network. Berlin has plenty of interesting green spaces to enjoy, from the massive Tempelhofer Feld (a former airfield) to the quirky Mauerpark, situated along the former border of the Berlin Wall.
Berlin’s four largest research universities are the Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, Technical University of Berlin and the Berlin University of the Arts. All are internationally acclaimed for the quality of their research and training.
You’ll also be able to study a Masters in Berlin at a range of other higher education providers, including several professional, technical and applied science institutions and various specialist research centres. Collectively, these institutions can claim 40 Nobel Prize winners, including thinkers as famous and influential as Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrödinger.
Berlin has a vibrant start-up scene and is one of Europe’s most popular locations for tech companies, with the likes of Google, Facebook, Apple and Soundcloud maintaining significant bases in the city. The German capital is home to offices of many multinational businesses, from Deutsche Bahn and Universal Music Germany to Siemens and Daimler.
