We have 102 Masters Degrees in Leuven, Belgium

Leuven is a historic university city in Belgium’s Flemish (Dutch-speaking) region, about 26km from Brussels. As well as KU Leuven, Leuven is home to a number of hogescholen (universities specialising in professional qualifications, including some postgraduate Masters programmes).

What’s it like to study a Masters in Leuven?

Postgraduate students in Leuven benefit from studying in one of Europe’s oldest university cities, with a real student focus. Many of the city’s population are students and this has led to the development of a lively nightlife (including a claim to feature the longest bar in Europe).

Complementing this, Leuven is also famous for its breweries and drinking culture, having been the original home of famous beers including Stella Artois.

More sedate attractions are offered by the city’s many beautiful historic buildings – several of which are part of KU Leuven itself. One of the most impressive is the Universiteitsbibliotheek (university library) and its 87m-high tower. In front of the library, keep an eye out for the Totem: a sculpture of a beetle impaled on a 23m-high needle. Saint Peter’s Church, located in Leuven’s town square, is an impressive cathedral with a history stretching back over 1,000 years.

Belgium’s good transport links also make it easy for students to travel elsewhere in Europe and visit neighbouring countries such as Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Brussels, the capital of Belgium and the European Union, is just over 20 minutes away by train.

Universities in Leuven

The history of Leuven and its university are closely intertwined. Founded in 1425, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven) is the oldest Catholic university in continuous operation and one of the oldest universities in the Low Countries (Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands).

Having played a key role in bringing the city to prominence as a centre of learning and an important scholarly archive, KU Leuven continues to produce research that enhances local business and development opportunities in medicine, biotech and related areas.

There are also several hogescholen (universities of applied science) based in Leuven, including Katholieke Hogeschool Leuven and UC Leuven-Limburg (UCLL).

The primary language of instruction in Leuven is Dutch, but plenty of Masters programmes are available in English.

Careers in Leuven

KU Leuven has a reputation for encouraging innovation, and this is reflected by the city’s economy. Important sectors include health, technology and the creative industries. Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest beer brewery, is headquartered in Leuven. Postgraduates might also be interested in opportunities at the many multinational organisations based in nearby Brussels.
