About the programme

The 2-year Master in Business and Technology, organized by the Solvay Business School of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, focuses on business aspects of modern-day technology. The programme contains advanced business courses, technology courses, as well as courses that combine both perspectives, such as the Entrepreneurship course.

This English variant of the Dutch-language Handelsingenieur ('Business Engineering') Master is not just a copy. On the contrary, the Solvay Master of Business & Technology focuses even more on IT and innovation and has a clear international flavour.

You will have the opportunity to take a number of elective courses in the second year, thus allowing you to personalise your curriculum and specialise more in either business, technology, or both.

Becoming a business engineer

Economics as its foundation, technology as added value and entrepreneurship as a guideline - this, in short, is the philosophy behind the Belgian academic qualification of 'Business Engineer' (Handelsingenieur / Ingénieur de Gestion, sometimes translated as 'Management Engineer' or 'Commercial Engineer').

Bridge the gap between the different worlds

The idea is to train professionals who are able to understand the jargon and business environment of all of their colleagues, whether they are engineers, economists, lawyers, computer scientists or they have other specialisations. Our graduates can bridge the gap between the different worlds of the many and varying professions in the workforce.

Solid foundation in economics

During the bachelor phase of our degree, which is only offered in Dutch, our students develop a solid foundation in economics and are immersed in business disciplines such as marketing, finance, management and human resource management. This is combined with a thorough grounding in mathematics, statistics and computer science, while a strong basis in science is provided by coursework in physics, chemistry, electronics and technology. Another unique aspect of the business engineer’s education is a strong focus on language skills.

This broad background is the cornerstone of our master’s programme, and all students admitted to the program are expected to have a similar knowledge base.

High-level business programme

Through this programme international undergraduate students have the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of the Solvay Business School without having to attend classes in Dutch. Participation in a high-level business programme in Brussels, the capital of Europe, is a great asset for any student who strives to be prepared for the challenge of management in a globalised world.

Approach

Interdisciplinary

The Master in Business and Technology is a unique interdisciplinary programme with a clear focus on all business aspects of cutting edge technology, offering advanced courses in business, technology and their intersection. The offered technology courses are taught by professors from both the Faculty of Exact Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering Science. Professors of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences & Solvay Business School for their part will provide students with highly specialised knowledge in economics and business aspects.

Intercultural

Students in the Master in Business and Technology will meet with peers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds while greatly improving their English language skills.

International

All of the courses in the Master in Business and Technology have a distinct international flavour. Due to its all-round and international character, the programme provides students with a multitude of career opportunities after graduation.

About the programme

The MSc in International Business (formally known as MSc. in Management Science) is a 2-year, full-time programme organised by the Solvay Business School of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. It targets students - both Belgian and foreign - with academic bachelor’s degrees in Business Economics or Management who are looking for an English-language master’s programme with a distinct international and multidisciplinary flavour, and in an international setting.

Doing business in an international context

The basic concept behind the selection of the courses in the programme is straightforward. There are essentially three types of courses: courses that deal with today's international economic context, advanced business courses, and courses on the intersection of these two fields; that is, courses that are all about 'doing business in an international context', including a hands-on internship in a (multinational) company.

The courses that introduce students to today's European/international/globalised economic environment are placed in the first semester of the first year. Courses that improve students' business knowledge are mainly in the second semester of the first year.

Personalise your curriculum

The first year consists of compulsory courses. But in the second year, apart from the Master’s thesis and the internship, there are only two compulsory courses, namely Corporate Social Responsibility, Multinational Strategic Planning and a brand new advanced course on international economics. This allows students to personalise their curriculum by picking elective courses.

Learn from professionals from all over the world...

Our professors have solid publication records and increasingly come from different corners of the world. In addition to our eminent academics, we are proud to welcome, as members of our teaching faculty, numerous business professionals and practitioners from every sector of business and the economy, including industry and services, as well as the private and public sectors in both Belgium and Europe. Their knowledge and experience cover every field of management and business (strategy, finance, marketing, leadership, technology, IT, etc.).

...specialised in various fields of research

We have also created a number of research Chairs, financed by corporate and private donors. Students have the opportunity to attend lectures given by the holders of these research Chairs, all of whom are highly respected and internationally known professors specialising in various fields of research.

Admission requirements

Candidates with a university Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a field related to business/management or economics who have obtained the minimum number of (European) credits in EACH of the subjects as set out below (a total of 96) may be admitted after a review of their application by the Admissions Board.

This English taught evening programme meets both the needs of young university bachelors and masters without a business degree and professionals without a master degree to increase their managerial insights. It is a one-year evening programme for students without prior Management education.

Know-how for management

The programme offers both Belgian and international students the skills and know-how needed for management positions in a broad array of sectors. In detail, the programme prepares you for management positions in international companies where a good knowledge of English will be a bonus.

The MSc in Management offers a broad-based view of the field of business and economics. Particular attention is paid to instilling you with a due sense of economic intuition and vision, required as a foundation for adequate management.

The courses are selected with an international and varied audience in mind. This implies that mere Belgian topics are not studied and that all courses have an international focus.

Strengths

In the MSc in Management programme you will get more time to work on your Master thesis. Because the examinations of the second semester are scheduled in the month of April (in the weeks after the spring break), there will be no courses given in the last weeks of the academic year. This way you will have more time to finalise your Master thesis.

There are opportunities to spread the programme for students who wish to combine their studies with a (full-time) job.

The preparatory programme is obligatory for all students and can be combined with the Master programme within the same academic year. Only holders of an academic degree in engineering with a minor (of minimum 18 ECTS credits) in management are exempted from the preparatory programme.

Curriculum

The programme consists of the following courses:
- Strategic Marketing
- Supply Chain Management
- Human Resources Management
- Management and Strategy
- Financial and Managerial Accounting
-Corporate Finance and Investment Analysis
- Informatics for Management
- Master Thesis

Content

in the field of economics of globalisation, international trade and European economic integration. It provides a profound insight into the current scientific knowledge in this field and is supported by scientific research at the partner universities, both at these universities individually and in a network context. The Programme leads to an in-depth understanding in the following core fields: Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, Open Economy Macroeconomics and International Finance, Economics of Globalisation, Economics of European Integration, and International Trade: Theory and Policy. As a master degree in economics should also include a strong quantitative component, Applied Econometrics is taught as an additional core discipline.

Added value

The M.A. focuses on conveying the new insights that come from recent economic research with respect to the impact on the relations with the emerging economies in East Asia and Latin America of social evolutionary processes like trade globalisation, globalisation on international financial markets, globalised governance and the ‘knowledge economy’. In doing so, the M.A. programme adds to university excellence and yields European added value, thereby, at least indirectly, contributing to European competitiveness.

The M.A. programme also creates specific European added value and is completely in line with the Bologna declaration, the Berlin Communiqué and with EUA Joint Master Recommendations through 6 specific features:
- European integration is one of the two core subjects of the Master Programme Economics of Globalisation and European Integration;
- a joint European degree: 7 European universities from 6 EU countries, together with 2 universities from BRICS countries, jointly award a consortium diploma;
- ECTS: the joint degree programme in entirely conceived within the philosophy and practice of the ECTS grading system;
internal and external quality control is in place in accordance with ENIC-NARIC recommendations;
- mobility: students move during the academic year as a group over three locations to three different countries, at least two of which are European; there is also teacher mobility;
- language: students stay during the year in three different language environments and they are offered the possibility to receive free and credited language courses in the corresponding countries.

Structure

The study-programme is full-time and runs over one year. The language of instruction is English. Courses are taught by professors from all partner universities. Professors from all partner universities act as supervisors and evaluators of the final dissertation.
The Programme consists of 60 ECTS credits, the taught part of the programme consisting of 45 credits and the dissertation having a weight of 15 credits. One credit is roughly equivalent to 25 working hours (lectures, assignments and study time).
Optional, but credited, language courses are offered in each of the languages of the countries involved in the Consortium (English excepted).

More details on http://www.ua.ac.be/main.aspx?c=.EGEI&n=96030

Degree awarded

The programme leads to a master degree called M.A. Economics of Globalisation and European Integration.
The diplomas are certified jointly by the partners and are signed by the Rector, President or Vice-chancellor of each partner university.

Student profile

The programme is aimed at students with career aspirations in research, in government and international organisations, and in research departments of large banks and industrial and commercial corporations.

Admission requirements

The programme is open to students who have earned 240 ECTS credits in an economics or applied economics university study programme or have a bachelor degree in these areas that is considered by the Joint Studies Board to be equivalent.
Applicants who are enrolled in the final year of their academic programme should submit an official letter in English from their university confirming that they are expected to finalise their course at the end of the current academic year, and submit up-to-date authenticated transcripts with the results of the previous years.

The proficiency in English of the students of the participating universities is checked by the local academic co-ordinators. Students from other universities should submit proof of an internet-based TOEFL level of minimum 90 (or its equivalent in another TOEFL score system), or a IELTS grade of at least 6.5, or should submit proof of having studied at least one academic year in an English-language programme.

The selection procedure of all students (with and without an EM scholarship) is a common one. After having passed the eligibility check (see above) the candidates are first ranked according to their study results (GPA and/or class of degree). The weights used to differentiate those applicants who passed the eligibility tests, are the following: 30% for the type of diploma, 30% for the GPA average, 20% for fluency in English and 20% for the reputation of the home university based on the Shanghai ranking. This ‘reputation’ criterion is applied in conjunction with the requirement to strive for regional balance in the student population. The global intake of new students (with and without a scholarship) is limited to 45.
