The main objective of the MRes Programme in Translational Medicine is to provide high quality candidates with the research rigour, innovation culture and the leadership skills to be at the forefront of this translational revolution. Students will receive expert training in all aspects of translational medicine including how new experimental findings are translated into treatments for patients; the experimental steps in the process, the development of innovative solutions, management and leadership skills and an appreciation of marketing and financial aspects of translational medicine through interaction with business leaders and scientists from Biotech and Pharmacy

This research intensive programme incorporates a 38 week research project in an area selected by the student in consultation with the research project co-ordinator. student selected area.

QUB has an international reputation in translational medicine, achieved through the recognised metrics of high impact peer review publications, significant international research funding, the generation of exploitable novel intellectual property and the establishment of successful spin-out biotech companies. This stream provides students with a unique opportunity to study cancer biology and perform innovative cancer research within the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology (CCRCB). Prospective students are immersed in this precision medicine milieu from Day 1, providing for them the opportunity to understand the key principles in discovery cancer biology and how these research advances are translated for the benefit of cancer patients. The strong connectivity with both the biotech and biopharmaceutical sectors provides a stimulating translational environment, while also opening up potential doors for the student's future career.

Molecular Pathology (MP) is a rapidly growing discipline in 21st century medicine. It integrates genomics and bioinformatics with modern pathology to underpin molecular diagnostics, theranostics as well as clinical trials delivery within the academic, health services and industry sectors in an era of precision medicine.

This MSc is an exciting, innovative blended learning programme aimed to enhance the participant’s theoretical knowledge and practical skills in MP and to empower them to pursue a career in academia, healthcare or industry. The course has a strong focus on innovation and entrepreneurship; emphasising MP’s central role in molecular diagnostics, clinical trials and biotech/biopharma.

This Masters programme has been developed with a number of options in order to provide maximum flexibility of training. Candidates can take the Certificate/Diploma/MSc in Molecular Pathology of Cancer which will provide a solid foundation for those wishing to study MP at PhD level. The full-time MSc is also available as an intercalated degree for Medical and Dental students. Additionally, the three modules which are offered by Distance Learning are available as a ‘stand-alone’ Certificate in Pathology Informatics and Business Application.



Semester 1

All candidates will undertake traditional ‘face to face’ teaching for the three modules in Semester 1. This will be timetabled teaching. Some of the teaching sessions within the modules also form aspects of formal teaching for other PG programmes, providing the students with the opportunity to interact with other Masters students from different disciplines, which we feel enhances the student experience. Collectively, the modules would be sufficient for a Certificate in Molecular Pathology

Semester 2

Candidates will complete three modules which will be available ‘online’ as distance learning modules. Collectively, the modules in Semester 2 without the Semester 1 modules would be sufficient for a Certificate in Pathology Informatics and Business Application.

The modules presented will emphasise clinically and surgically relevant anatomy, although they are not designed exclusively for clinicians, and applications are invited from any students who have studied some basic anatomy within their first degree.

Students will have access to human cadaveric teaching material in a purpose-built facility licensed by the Human Tissue Authority. Teaching will be based in the Centre for Biomedical Sciences Education, whose staff have won seven Queen’s University Teaching Awards in recent years

The aims and objectives are to:
• prepare the student to move directly into graduate level employment in the chemical / pharmaceutical industry, or in a non-chemistry related industry,
• enhance their employability skills including the ability to work in a team, written and oral presentation skills, numeracy and preparation for self-motivated lifelong learning, professional development and service to society,
• gain appropriate knowledge and subject specific practical skills to permit students to progress to either an academic research degree (PhD) or an industrial research position,
• provide a practical research training through successful completion of a substantial piece of research in pharmaceutical analysis, and
• undertake research at the forefront of the analytical sciences at an advanced level.
The programme is designed to train students in the appropriate skills for them to be able to pursue a career in chemical analysis, either in an academic or industrial context, with particular focus on pharmaceutical analysis. The course is structured in a way that will ensure hands-on experience with the majority of techniques and instrumentation used nowadays in modern analytical laboratories.The course comprises of four taught modules that cover the key aspects of Pharmaceutical Analysis, including Advanced Separation Science, Advanced Spectroscopic Techniques, Solid State Characterisation Techniques and Quality Assurance and Control in the Pharmaceutical Industry.

RESEARCH PROJECT
