The Master of Physiotherapy (MPhty) course prepares graduates for professional practice as physiotherapists.

Physiotherapists use highly-developed clinical reasoning skills to assess, diagnose and treat people with movement problems caused by a wide variety of joint, muscle, nerve and metabolic disorders. They use a range of drug-free techniques to treat and prevent injuries, and assist their clients to maintain fit and healthy bodies. The focus of physiotherapy is upon patient-centred care.

The core areas of the MPhty course are introductory and advanced musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary physiotherapy, applied to patients across the lifespan. Biomechanics, occupational health and community health are incorporated in various units of study; and evidence-based practice and professional practice are embedded throughout the curriculum. Students will also undertake university-organised clinical practice placements in the second year of the course. The skills required to practice advanced clinical reasoning are progressively developed during the course.

The course is a graduate-entry program, which means students are required to have completed an undergraduate degree prior to entry. As the MPhty degree confers eligibility for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), which is required to practice as a physiotherapist in Australia, students will be assisted in achieving prescribed professional competencies through practical and theoretical skill acquisition and clinical fieldwork placements.

Clinical placements are undertaken in both the public and private sectors. These placements further the opportunities to develop an understanding of the practice of physiotherapy, and its place in the contemporary health system.

As part of this course eligible students also have the opportunity to take part in the ‘FHS Abroad' program which involves academic study and a 4-6 week placement with non-government organisations and other development agencies in one of a small number of countries in South and South East Asia. This experience (valued at 6 credit points) enables students to gain a real understanding of global health and make a lasting difference to communities worldwide.

The pace of work in the MPhty is demanding and is commensurate with the expectations of postgraduate study; as is the level and complexity of the issues dealt with in the degree.

The Master of Physiotherapy course is taught by academics who are world-leaders in their fields and who bring their research into the classroom so that students are exposed to cutting-edge knowledge. Continence and Women's Health

This major will provide you with the opportunity to become an expert clinician in women's health physiotherapy and its related areas of practice. In this major you will develop clinical skills in the assessment and management of conditions which are unique, common or serious to women, or require special interventions in women.

You will develop particular expertise in the management of pelvic floor dysfunction and its presentations, including bladder and bowel dysfunction, disorders of the pelvic organ and pelvic girdle support, sexual dysfunction and pelvic pain.

Occupational therapists work closely with people of all ages to achieve a high quality of life, irrespective of age, disability or illness. Helping people to function in daily living activities and promoting well-being at home, in school, at work, and in leisure are of prime concern to the occupational therapist. Occupational therapists take a holistic approach and are involved in client evaluation and intervention as part of a health care team. They also play a role in wider health issues such as community development, health promotion and policy making.

This graduate entry master course offers you a fast-track option to becoming an occupational therapist. You will develop knowledge of four broad areas:

-Medical, psychiatric, orthopaedic and neurological conditions which affect the health and well-being of individuals.
-The theory and practice of occupational therapy including the study of occupation and analysis of the physical, psychological and social requirements of a variety of skills and activities.
-Human development covering normal growth and development within the life cycle along with problems which occur such as learning disabilities and the effects of ageing.
-Occupational health and management, including prevention, education and rehabilitation programs for a variety of workplaces.
-Your studies will be complemented with extensive clinical fieldwork practice. You will also have the unique opportunity to take part in the Occupational Therapy Abroad program, participating in a fieldwork placement in China, India, South Africa or Ukraine for four weeks.

Please note: Participation is obligatory in laboratory classes which may require appropriate disrobing when acting as clients in the peer group, and physically manipulating patients including lifting and supporting people with disabilities.

Professional recognition

Graduates using the title of registered health practitioner or the title of occupational therapist must be registered with Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (the National Board). Registration for practice enables graduates, once registered, to practise occupational therapy in all Australian states and territories. Graduates can also choose to be a member of the Australian Association of Occupational Therapists and/or Occupational Therapy Australia (WA). The course is recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. Graduates may also apply for registration in most countries although some countries may require sitting a licensing examination.

Credit for previous study

Applications for recognition of prior learning (RPL) are assessed on an individual basis. You may apply for recognition of prior learning on the basis of extensive work experience, clinical specialisation or significant publication and research experience.
