The oldest university in Perth is the University of Western Australia, founded in 1911 and widely regarded as one of the premier research universities in Australia. It is a member of Australia’s elite Group of Eight and regularly ranks within the top 100-150 universities worldwide.
Other major higher education providers include Curtin University, which has won numerous prizes for the quality of its postgraduate research.

Historically, Perth has been closely associated with the mining and energy industries and to this day the city is a major regional base for some of the largest mining corporations in the world. The city has a diverse economy from these industries, with strong representation in the creative, technology, financial services and medical sectors.
