Geoscience is a science that aims to understand all aspects of our planet, ranging from the Earth's surface to the deep interior. It also aims to discover how the Earth has evolved during the past 4.4 billion years, including the origin of continents, oceans, atmosphere and life.

UWA is well equipped for teaching and research in geoscience. It is the only institution in the world to house two state-of-the-art Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) instruments (CAMECA IMS 1280 and CAMECA NanoSIMS 50) providing a unique analytical capability to Australian and international researchers.

Geographic Information Science (GIScience) is a dynamic and exciting field essential to providing valuable location-based solutions and information to a range of disciplines and industries.

The graduate certificate helps professionals from a wide variety of areas acquire or build on their knowledge and skills. Graduates may go on to develop geospatial solutions that can be applied to health, planning, oil and gas, infrastructure, agriculture, mining and environment and other industries.

Through the study of two core units and two specialist options, you will be introduced to geographic information systems and begin to develop skills in the management and use of spatial data. This course offers the flexibility and convenience of studying on-campus, fully online or both.

Professional recognition

Graduates are eligible for membership of the Surveying & Spatial Sciences Institute (SSSI).

Career opportunities

Graduates are in high demand and find work in a diverse range of areas, including exploration and mining, oil and gas, environmental and resources management, agriculture, engineering, health sciences, urban and regional planning and transport.

Credit for previous study

Applications for recognition of prior learning (RPL) are assessed on an individual basis.

You may be able to complete this course in 6 months full-time depending on unit availability. Full-time study for Semester 2 entry is not available.

Geographic Information Science and Environmental Management - Processing and interpreting complex multi-dimensional spatial datasets is increasingly in demand for the successful management of both built and natural environments.

Geographic Information Science (GIS) involves the acquisition, visualisation and analysis of geographical data, including from ecological systems, landforms, soils, water, land use, economic activity and population demographics. When combined with environmental management, it offers a powerful tool for integrating our understanding of environmental processes with strategic planning approaches to resolve problems.

The Master of International Development engages students with the contemporary challenges of addressing poverty and inequality globally through an emphasis on empirical evidence, real-world case studies, and debates.

You will develop the knowledge and skills to approach practical and policy challenges in a wide range of contexts by drawing on expertise from development geographers, political scientists, resource economists and development practitioners.
The Economics of Development specialisation
is coordinated by the School of Agricultural and Resource Economic, Faculty of Science. This specialisation provides students with tools of economic analysis to address challenges in developing countries with a focus on agriculture, environment and rural development. Units in this specialisation help students understand what can be done to promote development through multiple interventions, and how to analyse the economic, social and environmental impacts of specific initiatives.

Student learns how to conduct development analyses, such as poverty assessments and environmental impact assessments, commonly used by development agencies and policy makers. They explore themes such as the relationship between economic growth and development; the role of trade and foreign aid in development; the effectiveness of microfinance and rural credit schemes in poverty alleviation; measuring risk and vulnerability in developing contexts; global food systems and agricultural development; and institutional and market failure.
