Engineers are the key to the development of society and solving the problems the world currently faces. They have the power to make the world fundamentally different.

The Master of Advanced Engineering is the key transitional stage in your career, transforming you into a global leader. Gain a depth of knowledge, mastering the crucial skills to become a leading contributor in your field.

Customise your degree - the Master of Advanced Engineering offers flexibility to complete your Master degree in just one year, or you can choose a two year option.

This course is designed to extend your knowledge in your chosen specialisation area and advance your leadership and complex problem-solving skills in a cross cultural environment.

Understand, reflect critically upon and apply methods in at least one specialist engineering area to design solutions to complex, multifaceted engineering problems.

Common core units will develop crucial skills in areas such as data analysis and entrepreneurship, translating theory into engineering practice. In discipline core units you will identify, interpret and critically appraise current developments and technologies within your specialisation.

Enhancement units are designed to provide breadth and are taken from either another engineering specialisation or in complementary areas such as information technology and business.

In addition, the two year version of the program offers a range of technical electives that will deepen your understanding of a specific topic, and two, year- long engineering project units. You will work closely with an academic on a topic of your choice and immerse yourself in a multidisciplinary design project.

The Master of Advanced Engineering could also be your stepping stone to a research degree. All of this in highly interactive, expert led classes.

EMERGING POWER SYSTEMS (314675)

Global demands on resources have placed an urgent emphasis on supplying a growing population with affordable, environmentally responsible power. How we manage this challenging paradigm will rely on a new generation of creative, technically savvy engineers. Since fossil fuels are a finite resource, the development of alternative sources of electrical energy such as solar and wind is vital.

The challenges that face you as a power engineer include interfacing renewable sources to the electricity distribution system, maintaining stability in the presence of many small energy sources and guaranteeing an electrical supply in the presence of intermittent sources such as solar power.

This major addresses challenges in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity. Emergent technologies like smart grid and distributed generation are covered in detail. You will have the opportunity to further investigate and apply emergent technologies through your project work.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING (314676)

The electronics and communication fields represent two of the greatest growing technology areas in the world. With the rapid progress of information technology, the role of communications is becoming even more crucial for increasing industry efficiency and competition – whether machine talking to machine, computer with computer or human with human via a wide array of methods.

This major explores relevant topics in telecommunications and networking like mobile radio communications and data network security. The wide range of optional units includes topics such as computer architectural philosophies, LAN and WAN technologies, electromagnetics, error control coding, troubleshooter management, legal frameworks, and system design. You will also have the opportunity to further investigate a specialist area and apply your skills and knowledge through your project work.

EMBEDDED SYSTEMS (314677)

Our world is characterised by the ever-increasing number of intelligent devices which have inbuilt or 'embedded' computers. Computers in the form of microprocessors are being embedded in almost every other form of system to control them or provide additional services, creating a strong demand for electrical engineers in all industrially advanced nations.

In this major, you will study intermediate and advanced topics in embedded systems, for example, embedded systems in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and embedded software engineering. You will have the opportunity to further investigate and apply emergent technologies in embedded systems through your chosen advanced project.

Students entering the course with less than two years of work experience choose from selected Master of Management subject offerings, while students with greater than two years of experience may undertake subjects from Melbourne Business School’s prestigious MBA subject offerings. Graduates may then be eligible for advanced standing into the Master of Management or MBA degrees, if they choose to continue their business studies.

CAREER OUTCOMES

Engineering managers lead engineering projects and personnel, in a range of technical fields such as product development, manufacturing, construction, design engineering, industrial engineering, software engineering and telecommunications. Your career opportunities will be varied and the skills you develop will be in high demand. Our graduates work in management or consultancy roles in areas such as general management, project management, human resources, finance, quality assurance, education, contract arbitration and policy development within technically-focused organisations.

Biomedical Engineering has enormous potential to make a positive impact on human health.

Biomedical engineers address healthcare problems from a unique perspective, blending an understanding of biomedical science with specialist knowledge of engineering techniques and problem-solving skills.

You will focus on human systems, the design and operation of devices and processes, and the application of engineering skills to new medical treatments, instruments and machines.

Our reputation for biomedical innovation in areas such as medical bionics, prostheses and tissue engineering, ensures you are learning from leaders in the field, who are working on exciting projects aimed at solving major health dilemmas.

The Master of Engineering (Biomedical) will lead to a formal qualification in biomedical engineering at the Masters level.

Step into the world of medical device development through BioDesign Innovation, an interdisciplinary biomedical engineering subject, where you work in a team with MBA students to create a prototype and develop a supporting business plan.

CAREER OUTCOMES

Biomedical engineers: develop new drug therapies; study the electrical and/or mechanical activity of organs such as the brain, heart, muscle and bone; build artificial organs, limbs, heart valves and bionic implants to replace lost function; develop orthopaedic devices to treat bone and joint conditions; and grow living tissues to replace failing organs.

Employment opportunities exist in the biotechnology, biomedical, pharmaceutical, medical device and equipment industries, in research and innovation, in the health services and hospitals, in government and consulting, and for companies such as Cochlear, Sanofi, Cell Therapies, Compumedics, GlaxoSmithKline and Zimmer Biomet.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION

The Master of Engineering is professionally recognised under two major accreditation frameworks — EUR-ACE® and the Washington Accord (through Engineers Australia). Graduates can work as chartered professional engineers throughout Europe, and as professional engineers in the 17 countries of the Washington Accord.

Mechanical engineering applies human and material resources to the design, construction, operation and maintenance of machines to move people, goods and materials, generate energy, produce goods and services, control pollution and dispose of wastes.

Mechanical engineers turn energy into power and motion, focusing on the generation, conversion and use of energy, as well as the design, construction and operation of devices and systems.

You will learn from world leaders in fluid mechanics, turbulence and biomechanics. Opportunities to consolidate theory with practice will come from group activities, site visits and industry projects. You will have access to well-equipped laboratories for materials testing, engine/turbine testing, wind tunnel investigations, simulation and metal forming processes. A heavy engineering workshop is available for the manufacture of testing facilities and research apparatus, as well as extensive computer facilities.

The Master of Engineering (Mechanical with Business) leads to a formal qualification in mechanical engineering at the Masters level.

CAREER OUTCOMES
