Forested landscapes play a critical role in sustaining human and other biological communities. They provide wildlife habitat, biodiversity, timber, clean water and other ecosystem services - and play a central role in mitigating rapid climate change.

The Master of Forest Ecosystem Science offers the knowledge, skills and analytical capabilities to shape the development of forest and natural resource management enterprises world-wide. Students will learn about climate change science, water resource management and biodiversity conservation and develop the ability to conduct crucial experimental work in the field.

Students will benefit from connections and experiences with forest, land and fire agencies and non-governement organisations (NGOs), and share the broad range of local and international working experiences and contacts of our academics and students. The Master of Forest Ecosystem Science will prepare students for management positions within the forest and natural resource management sectors.

Since 2008, the University of Melbourne has organised a field study subject for students in the Master of Forest Ecosystem Science to Laos and Vietnam. The subject explores the relationships between people and forests in the Asia Pacific region. The subject has also been taken by students in the Master of Environment and other programs. In November 2015, with the support of Vice Chancellor's Fellow Professor Kate Auty, filmmakers Belinda Ensor and Joel Checkley joined part of the program and made a short film. It explores the experiences of past and current students and staff and highlights the importance of field-based learning in academic study.

Upon completion of this course, students should have:

  • Advanced skills and knowledge in the design and implementation of forest ecosystem management;
  • A thorough knowledge of forest systems as a basis for recommending sustainable forest management practices, and the ability to effectively communicate the future effects of climate change and its relevance to forest science disciplines;
  • Understanding of the biological, economic, social and environmental factors that shape the development of forest and natural resource management enterprises both in Australia and internationally, including recent developments in biodiversity conversation, climate change science and water resource management;
  • Advanced knowledge and analytical capabilities that enable novel solutions in forest ecosystem management including planted and natural forest settings;
  • Ability to independently critically analyse, integrate and interpret forest science data generated through novel research as a basis for recommending sustainable forest management actions;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, to a range of audiences, the environmental and functional values of forest ecosystems in the maintenance of healthy and vibrant human communities.

The Master of Urban Horticulture has been designed for a diversity of graduate students including those who wish to upgrade their urban horticulture and landscape management skills and those embarking on a new career.

Core studies are completed in the areas of plant production and establishment, horticultural science, urban flora, landscape management, a research project and either project management, social research or experimental design and statistics. Elective subjects include social and therapeutic horticulture, garden history and design, urban tree management, managing invasive species and many others across the university.

The Master of Urban Horticulture is a unique qualification. It is the only graduate course in the southern hemisphere, and one of a few in the world, specifically designed for students seeking employment or career advancement in the expanding urban horticulture and landscape management industries. In an increasingly urbanised world high quality, multi-functional urban green spaces and urban forests are seen by citizens, governments and the private sector as increasingly important for the environmental, economic, social and health benefits they provide. Graduates of the Master of Urban Horticulture are uniquely placed to advocate for, design, create and manage urban vegetation, contributing to cleaner, sustainable and more liveable cities.

Upon completion of this course, student should have:

  • Skills and knowledge in the design, implementation and current management practices of urban landscapes;
  • Ability to interpret, critically analyse and evaluate data generated through research activities in order to effectively implement horticultural programs and operations;

The Master of Science (Ecosystem Science) offers students the flexibility to develop their own interests by selecting from a wide range of coursework subjects, including discipline core subjects and a professional skills module that provides high-level training in the areas of science communication, data analysis and modelling, ethics and/or leadership in science.

This degree provides students with essential skills, knowledge and research training through a Research Project in one of the discipline areas represented in the School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences. These include: conservation biology, ecology, ecophysiology, environmental psychology, environmental and landscape management, forest science, genetics, horticulture, hydrology and soil science.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Conduct independent research in one or more fields of ecosystem science;
  • Review and critically assess the scientific literature;
  • Formulate and evaluate hypotheses;
  • Design and conduct laboratory, field and/or social studies as appropriate to the field(s) of the research project;
  • Analyse and interpret data;
  • Clearly communicate scientific results in written and oral presentations to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
