With extensive experience analysing and controlling the physical phenomena affecting buildings, practitioners of Architectural Science have a profound impact on the function, aesthetics and efficiency of architectural spaces.

Sustainable Design professionals are responsible for developing efficient and environmentally responsive buildings, and retrofitting existing buildings to meet today’s environmental demands. Sustainable designers are critical to ensuring that the plans on paper become a reality during and after construction.

Your skills in sustainable design are enhanced through the Faculty’s expertise in the built environment. Our ‘first principles’ approach enables you not just to perform energy analyses and building assessments, but also to critique and develop further the tools and approaches required for sustainable building.

Your research-leading lecturers take you on site visits and expose you to a range of international collaborators. We leverage our extensive links with industry to bring you internship opportunities with leading businesses and consultancies. And you can use a wide range of electives to pursue your interests in the application of sustainable design theories and methods in architecture, planning, urban design, building services and facilities management.

The field of Architectural Science is enjoying rapid and exciting technological innovations. Through interdisciplinary access to our leading Academic researchers and laboratories, our program emphasises the knowledge and critical thinking skills that will enable students to adapt to—and lead—future changes in our built environment.

You will be equipped with the professional skills to ensure maximum operational efficiencies, optimal comfort and ideal health outcomes for occupants of corporate and residential environments.

SECONDARY STREAM

Sustainable design involves an approach to creating buildings that meets the world's need to reduce our impact on ecological systems. The built environment professions - including architects, engineers, urban designers and planners - are increasingly held responsible for the performance of their designs and projects, including accordance with promised environmental principles. Sustainable design skills are highly demanded by the construction and design industries, environmental consultancies, government agencies and in the day-to-day operation and management of commercial buildings. This program is tailored for design and related built-environment professionals who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in sustainable design.

Our integrated approach to Sustainable Design provides you with the knowledge you need to address sustainability considerations without compromising building functionality or profitability. You will combine the aesthetic approaches to design with a thorough understanding of energy efficiency, analysis and performance metrics. You will be exposed to ratings systems, myriad testing methods and will come to understand energy and resource use from ecological, economic and governance perspectives, as well as the storage and release of energy and how to design for both performance and comfort.

Heritage Conservation teaches you the techniques, approaches and methodologies required to work as a heritage consultant in policy development or regulation enforcement, or as a cultural historian and commentator. This exciting field of study is much more than just the simple preservation of existing buildings. Instead, our Heritage Conservation program trains you to understand the social value and embedded capital of significant sites, and determine what should be preserved for future generations. Your degree in Heritage Conservation allows you to draw on our Faculty’s extensive history in this profession, being the first university in the Asia-Pacific region to offer a program in Heritage Conservation.

This program combines the technical and aesthetic principles of architecture and architectural history with the social value of our past. You will be educated in the use of new and old material, alteration design, additions and modifications to existing buildings, and the sustainable, ethical and equitable development of sites in light of its past uses. By engaging with history, your role as a heritage consultant is to provide value to building owners, visitors and cultural bodies, all of which have a shared interest in understanding, adapting and preserving our heritage.

Your core program emphasises the skills required for work with valuable heritage sites. These skills include the assessment, interpretation, management, documentation and formation of policy for culturally significant places, including buildings, sites and cultural landscapes. These core skills are taught by focusing on the duality of historic buildings – their construction (in terms of design and materials) and significance (culturally, historically, economically and socially). From this dual understanding, you will be trained to develop policy that reflects the importance of all aspects of a significant building.

As the world’s population becomes increasingly urbanised and buildings continue to tie up 40 percent of our energy costs, high performance buildings are more important than ever. The challenge is to reduce the energy consumption and maintenance costs of large buildings while ensuring a comfortable and productive environment for occupants. To achieve these goals, the industry requires a new type of professional: an expert with specialised skills in the optimisation of new and existing buildings for the best design and delivery of services.

The Master of Architectural Science (High Performance Buildings) is your pathway to an exciting and rewarding career in the built environment field. The High Performance Buildings stream integrates the various components of the built environment, namely Architectural and Building Services (design and operations), passive and active Sustainability, strategic and operational Facility Management and Property Economics (highlighting Return On Investment principles). You will have the opportunity to not only learn but also actively participate in research as part of your studies. On graduation you will have an excellent, scientifically-based education on the design, service provision and operation of buildings in a sustainable manner—an area with increasing economic and environmental importance.
