What’s it like to study a Masters in Athens?

Often cited as the birthplace of Western democracy, Athens almost doesn’t need an introduction. The seat of Ancient Greek civilisation, Athens is littered with monuments to classical culture. The city’s famous Acropolis looms from a rugged outcrop, while the majestic Temple of Olympian Zeus took over 600 years to complete.

The Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans all left their mark on Athens, resulting in a beguiling mix of architecture that spans amphitheatres, monasteries and mosques. There are also plenty of Neoclassical buildings from the 19th century.

As you’d expect from a city with this kind of history, Athens has several world-class museums. Located at the foot of the Acropolis, its accompanying museum exhibits cultural treasures and reveals the ancient ruins of an Athenian neighbourhood underneath its glass floor. The National Archaeological Museum, meanwhile, is home to the most extensive collection of Ancient Greek artefacts in the world.

Beyond Athens’ glittering past, the modern city is a vibrant place with gritty, authentic edge: anarchist neighbourhoods rub shoulders with fashion-conscious promenades. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is a complex that hosts the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera, along with a sprawling park near the waterfront. The Panathenaic Stadium hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896 and is now open to the public, the only marble-built stadium in the world.

Universities in Athens

Athens is an important centre for higher education and several of Greece’s top universities are based there. The public National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (usually referred to as the University of Athens) is the largest in the city, with around 63,000 students. The National Technical University of Athens is a significant Engineering-centric institution, while the Athens University of Economics and Business is another specialist university (both of which are public).

There are also a number of private colleges and foreign institutions in Athens, including the University of Kent, Athens and the American College of Greece. The Alba Graduate Business School is a private institution associated with the American College of Greece.

The primary language of instruction in Greece is Greek, but there are plenty of postgraduate programmes available in English, both at public universities and foreign / private institutions.

Despite the Greek debt crisis, Athens remains a major business and financial centre of the region of Southeastern Europe. Several multinational companies have presences in the city, including Coca-Cola, Ericsson and Siemens.
