The design of low and medium-rise buildings has, for some time, taken climatic variations and sustainability into account. However, despite the increase in the number of large-scale buildings worldwide during the last few decades, high-rise buildings are still seen as mega-scale energy consumers with little regard for sustainable design and performance. The current environmental agenda and interest in sustainability across the globe raises the significance of mega-buildings.

On this interdisciplinary course, we focus on the principles of sustainable planning and design of mega-buildings and prepare students to specialise professionally in this field.

You will be based in the School of Architecture’s new studio for graduate students at Friary House, in Cardiff city centre. This is within 5-10 minutes’ walk of our other site, Bute Building.

You will develop core planning knowledge and skills, professional judgement and the specialist skills necessary to make you employable with a range of organisations.

The course is underpinned by a recognition that planning is undertaken in diverse, and sometimes unjust, societies, and that objectives and approaches to planning can be subjects of debate and struggle. The course will provide you with the sensitivity and ability to form independent judgements on these ethical, political and professional matters.

This MArch programme is the second stage (Part 2) of this route and is intended for those who wish to continue their education towards becoming a qualified architect. The course is approved by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Architects Registration Board (ARB). Our MArch is a two year programme which is studied on a full-time basis. It is unique in that in the first year of study, you will predominantly be based in an architectural practice, undertaking a combination of practice-based and academic work. The MA in Professional Studies is a route to registration as an architect in the UK, approved by the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) at Part 3 level. On the course, students acquire an in-depth understanding of the legal and economic aspects of architectural practice and construction procurement, and the related skills necessary to practice effectively.

The course has an outstanding reputation. This is reflected in the Commendations it has received from successive RIBA Visiting Boards including from the latest, in July 2016, when the Commendation was for its ‘breadth, depth and rigour’.

On the course students explore the professional aspects of practice as an architect, including the construction industry and role of the profession, development controls, construction law, and project and practice management. We aim to inspire our students with a keen interest in current issues relating to the profession. Students are encouraged to explore their own relevant areas of interest, and to develop critical and independent judgement, and the ability to manage complex processes.

Firstly, the teaching offers a design-based iterative element, thereby testing the formulation of informed decisions. Secondly, it places emphasis on the role of sustainability within the historic context at both technical and strategic levels. By using the Welsh School of Architecture’s established expertise as a research locus for sustainable design, it addresses these concerns which have been identified internationally by ICOMOS as the critical future direction of conservation education.

Our MSc Building Diagnostics for Energy and Environmental Performance aims to give students a solid foundation in the evaluation of the operational performance of buildings for energy and environmental aspects. The programme will focus on the diagnostics of energy and environmental performance, integrating technical and occupants’ data. It will prepare you for a future career across a range of roles in facilities and building management, consultancy, energy and environmental performance assessment and research.

Most existing programmes in this subject area focus on the design of new buildings. However, the efficient operation of existing buildings is becoming more important. There is a need to improve the quality of environments and, at the same time, to reduce the energy that they consume and their carbon dioxide emissions. You will learn from interdisciplinary approaches, as the programme draws on bodies of theories from building science, social sciences and humanities.

On successful completion of the programme, you should be able to conduct sound evidence-based environmental and energy performance assessments of buildings in operation. You should also be able to analyse and integrate technical and social aspects of performance using methods of energy and environmental monitoring and human studies.

On this programme, students will acquire an in-depth understanding of the legal and economic aspects of architectural practice and construction procurement, and the related skills necessary to practice effectively on entry into the architectural profession.

The programme is designed to be undertaken whilst in full-time employment within an architectural practice or related construction industry organisation. It is taught by blended learning methods using the internet, and supplemented by short on-site courses.

The Diploma is prescribed by the ARB in relation to entry on the register of architects, and validated by the RIBA as equivalent to the RIBA Examination in Professional Practice (the Part 3). The previous incarnation of this Diploma course, which ran in 2016/17 received commendations from successive RIBA Visiting Boards including from the latest, in July 2016, where it was commended for its ‘breadth, depth and rigour’.
