MSc Forensic Anthropology is designed to enable graduate students to develop skills in a variety of areas, which concern the processing, analysis and identification of human remains. This postgraduate course provides intensive training in developmental anatomy and osteology, forensic anthropology methods and theory, forensic taphonomy in theory and practice, crime scene investigation and the law, research methods and expert witness and presentation skills. The course has a focus on both domestic forensic anthropology work (e.g. UK and US) and forensic anthropology in the context of international humanitarian work and international criminal investigation.

UCLan’s postgraduate Forensic Anthropology course is the only forensic anthropology/osteology MSc in the UK to be based within a dedicated forensics department with state-of-the-art Crime Scene Investigation practical labs as well as excellent resources in Forensic Biology and Chemistry.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

We have a dedicated MSc Forensic Anthropology laboratory and radiography facilities with the full range of teaching casts as well as an extensive collection of experimentally induced projectile, blunt and sharp force trauma. We have an archaeological skeletal collection consisting of some 120 individuals from two sites, one late Medieval and one Victorian. UCLan’s TRACES facility for decomposition and taphonomic experimentation is located nearby and many students choose to conduct MSc dissertation research projects as part of the long term research agenda into estimating time since death. Staff members teaching the course are also active in research and consultancy.

Assessment is based on a combination of coursework and examination and includes an MSc dissertation project. Students are encouraged to present their research findings at international meetings.

This course has been developed collaboratively by practitioners and academics to enhance the knowledge, understanding and skills required to work effectively within multi-Agency teams whether from a statutory organisation, the voluntary sector or a charity. Aimed at personal and professional development for current professionals in the field of multi-agency partnership working and as a natural progression for graduates in policing, law, criminology, sociology or health.

The course team have between them considerable academic and practical experience of multi-agency working and are actively involved in development and research in this area working closely with a variety of agencies in the statutory, voluntary and charitable sectors.

Facilities include an outstanding, modern HYDRA immersive learning centre, modern teaching rooms an extensive library and student learning zone. Module assessments are undertaken by means of coursework, workshops, projects, examination and dissertation.

The course is taught using a combination of lectures, practical's and self-directed study to understand the complexity of relationships, pressures and incentives within a multi-agency partnership. The course is delivered and taught by experienced academics, former and current practitioners.

This course is designed to enable graduate students and forensic practitioners to develop the theoretical knowledge underpinning forensic document examination and provide intensive training and practical experience. It covers the analysis of handwriting, signatures, questioned and fraudulent documents and provides training in the use of a range of highly specialised techniques, such as VSC, comparison microscopy, ESDA and Raman Spectroscopy.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The dedicated laboratory for this course houses an ESDA and a VSC-5000 and this is where MSc students will take a wide range of practical classes, carry out simulated casework and conduct laboratory-based dissertation research projects. Students will also have access to a wide range of state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation within the Analytical Unit. The Unit houses gas chromatographs with pyrolysis injection capability and FID, MS and EC detectors, ion chromatographs and high performance liquid chromatographs with diode array fluorescence, MS and Differential refractometer detectors. The Unit also houses facilities for Atomic absorption, UV-Visible and Infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectrometry, Inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry and Scanning Electron Microscopy With Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDAX).

Modules will be assessed through theory and practical examinations, and coursework (essays, moot courts, presentations and a dissertation). Students will be required to examine documents and equipment, produce case notes and reports.

Please note that Distance Learning students will be required to attend a two-week residential workshop at UCLan’s Preston campus during Semester 2. More information will be provided about this in Semester 1.

Modules are assessed through theoretical and practical examinations as well as coursework. Assessments include the examination of suspect documents and pieces of equipment from simulated cases and the production of formal case notes and expert reports, as well as essays, mock courtroom trials, group and individual presentations and a dissertation. Upon graduating from this course you will be well placed to gain employment in forensic science laboratories, police investigation teams, fraud departments in major government or private organisations, or to go on to further research in academia.

MSc Document Analysis is designed to enable graduate students and forensic practitioners to understand and develop the theoretical knowledge underpinning all aspects of forensic document examination and to develop skills in a variety of areas, which concern the processing, analysis, identification and interpretation of questioned documents. The course provides intensive training in all areas of forensic document analysis and provides extensive practical training in the areas of the analysis and identification of handwriting, signatures, printing apparatus and fraudulent documents. The course also provides you with training to act as an expert witness and presentation and communication skills.

You will study the principles underpinning the scientific analysis of handwriting and signatures together with the considerations involved when carrying out forensic casework. This course will also provide practical experience in the examination of printing equipment, typewriters, photocopiers and the identification of forged or counterfeit documents. You will be trained in a number of analytical techniques using highly specialised apparatus, such as the use of the video spectral comparator, a comparison microscope, ESDA (Electrostatic Detection Apparatus) and a Raman Spectrometer. In addition, the course will provide you with the opportunity to develop a large number of transferable skills.

Upon graduating from this course you will be well placed to gain employment in forensic science laboratories, police investigation teams and fraud departments in major government or private organisations, or to go on to further research in academia at doctoral level.

The principle concern of the Masters programme is the study of communities and the dynamics and tensions of human interaction within them, alongside the role of law as a vehicle of governance. It aims to focus on understanding disadvantages within communities and how inclusivity can be established. As well as, understand social inequalities and how to enhance the value of diversity and inclusion.
This course offers three exit routes. It is driven by the changing nature of equality legislation and practice and the conceptual synergies, at Postgraduate Certificate level between the Community Leadership Studies and the study of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. At the Diploma and Masters level there is a distinct focus on equality, diversity and inclusion.

You’ll be taught using a combination of lectures, interactive seminars and self-directed study to develop theoretical knowledge and practical application of the key aspects of counter terrorism. This course is available in full-time, part-time and distance learning modes of study.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The entire course delivery team are serving or former practitioners in the various fields of counter terrorism. The course team maintain strong links with counter terrorism agencies and the police service, especially within the North West of England. The programme is designed to improve career prospects and employability.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

All modules are assessed by coursework. Each assignment is based upon work covered on the course.
To ensure there is not an excessive amount of assessment at any one time, coursework is spread throughout the course.

The course is delivered by Jim Bonworth, the course leader and retired Chief Inspector in Greater Manchester Police, who has worked in the Prevent strand of the UK Government counter terrorism Contest strategy. Additional material is delivered by a team of subject-matter experts.

This course is available in full-time, part-time and distance learning modes. Computing Facilities are available in the general computing suites found within the building and throughout campus. FURTHER INFORMATION

The course is offered in weekly six-hour blocks which enables professionals in the field to take the degree more easily. It is aimed that students will have access to, and use, case management software supplied by Xanalys©, which is used by police forces internationally to administer complex investigations. Students will also be exposed to learning opportunities in our “HYDRA” immersive learning suite, used by many emergency services to prepare their senior officers to handle major incidents.

The course is assessed entirely by a variety of coursework assignments such as essays, reports and presentations. Every effort is made to spread the assessments in the interests of students; but, inevitably, assessments do tend to have deadlines at the end of semesters, so students are advised to plan and make early starts on assessed work so as to avoid problems in this context.

Semester 1 of the course is designed to ensure that you have the basic skills needed to obtain an MSc. It is important that you develop a range of skills that will be of benefit when you gain employment after the course. The main skills that you are developing will be in the areas of presentations, report writing, and problem solving.
