Your programme of study

The International Law programme offered at Aberdeen differs from International Commercial Law with Professional Skills and Dissertation within the optional modules you take. There is less emphasis on intellectual property law and commercial business law and more emphasis on International Law in a general sense internationally. You study areas such as family law, human rights, criminal law and humanitarian law plus private laws in many cases within your options so you can potentially specialise within your choices. You also do combine some area of commercial law such as arbitration, energy and environmental law and international trade and finance law which can be applied to individuals and businesses, charities and NGOs plus some level of cultural property law. These could be options if you want to mix your modules a bit within the first and second semester. If you want to get the most from your Master's degree and have a range of specialisms in international private and commercial law this may be an ideal solution due to the range of modules to choose from.

The LLM in International Law offers a range of courses covering both public and private international law. It enables students to undertake advanced legal research and writing in this field and educates students in the analysis of international treaties and case law with an international law dimension.

Your programme of study

The General Law programme at Aberdeen is one of the best programmes in terms of scope and areas of interest you can choose to study at advanced level. If your first degree was in a specific area of law there is nothing preventing you from choosing another area of law completely or a complementary area. You could study environmental law areas such as oil and gas law, energy and environmental law, low carbon energy transition with further environmental regulation. If you are more interested in criminal law you could look at Criminology, the politics of human rights, humanitarian law.  If you are more interested in business you might choose international law, intellectual property law, world trade organisation or for business with a creative aspect you might think about specialist in cultural property issues or law for business and arts and museums law.  There are many possible mixes of these general areas of law you might want to explore. Employment possibilities are huge from this range of areas of law and include all notable areas to practise law and careers within the legal profession to welfare sectors such as employment, business, HR and finance.

Law careers

You may become a Barrister if you wish to represent people at High Court and Magistrates court to put legal argument forward for decision. You could start off as a legal executive to later qualify as a solicitor with further training or after a number of years experience you may wish to become a judge. If you want some work experience you could become a court usher. Other careers include a Paralegal. This role undertakes much of a lawyers role in drafting documents, meetings and contracts.  If you decide your law degree is useful for other areas you may look at Civil Service careers, become a politician, work in the police, city, or teach.

This programme is ideal if you want to be a generalist to an advanced level rather than a specialist in a specific area of law. You develop your analysis and research skills and you have the option of wide ranging courses to choose from which stretches your intellectual thinking capabilities in a top 10 School of Law (Complete University Guide 2018)

Your programme of study

This campus delivered programme gives you some unique combinations and choices when studying International Trade Law and Treat Negotiation. You study all the essential parts to international trade agreements but you have a choice in optional courses to further specialise in Intellectual Property and how that is affected by international treaties, oil and gas law in relation to international trade, Asian and Pacific trade, and arbitration. The Law School is ranked 10th in the UK (The Complete University Guide 2018) and law has been taught at University of Aberdeen since the inauguration of Kings College in 1495.

This programme is highly relevant to current and future events resulting from breakdown of regional agreements with the UK and EU for example and re-negotiation of international trade agreements globally in a volatile global environment for trade internationally. The programme is highly relevant to you if you want to work in top level government and influence policy to assist your respective country to trade successfully around the world. This is a complex but fascinating area with some contemporary history to it in terms of the different agreements available and how these are now managed. There is also a need for skilled law professionals to work in multinational business where international trade needs to continue in order for companies to grow successfully within their supply chain and countries they trade in.

You will learn about the sale of goods to and from different countries in terms of legal agreements, World Trade Organisation rules and regulations and international trade negotiation plus management of international sales and terms. You can also study arbitration to assist in smooth running of your respective company or negotiations. This is an exciting area of international law in which there will be plenty of challenges to apply your skills and training to.

This programme differs in optional course modules from the blended learning programme of the same name by allowing you further specialisms which are highly relevant to government and global business arrangements when trading internationally within their supply chain, sales and manufacturing and service areas or within ideas creation and supply across complex supply chains globally.

Course detail

If you are new to studying law, the Law for Employment module is there to help you learn key legal concepts and structures necessary for understanding and applying employment law. This allows those without a recent LLB to be in a position to tackle the more advanced employment law modules later in the course. At the same time, those who have a recent law degree, or who are legal practitioners, will benefit from the choice to refresh their memory, by taking this module, or take another optional mediation module.

The course structure allows not only for flexibility in when, during a week, you study but also what you actually study, with the taking of up to three optional modules, thereby allowing you to tailor the course to your interests and needs.

The course starts in September each year but students can also choose to join the course in January. Students that start in January simply slot into the course at the start of Semester 2. While it is preferable to start in September and complete the Law for Employment and Employment Contracts & Rights modules first, the modules are all able to be taken on a standalone basis; there is no prerequisite to take these modules before any others.

Format

The course is taught fully online by dedicated employment law experts through CampusMoodle the University's virtual learning environment (VLE).
