Your programme of study

The increase in environmental regulation and concerns globally about climate change, distinction of species, deforestation, loss of green belt and more has lead to an increased focus about how best to manage environmental issues longer term. Many organisations across all sectors have found successful collaborations and partnerships have not only helped them manage risk but improve their learning's within environmental management. As population increases there is more demand on planning to provide an effective level of environmental understanding and knowledge. Often this relationship between planning and environment has been fractious due to economic benefit arguments or other planning benefits.

This has provided a huge gap at times in knowledge transfer at the right times, but in also managing brands and their reputation. The risks are very great if environment is not managed correctly and with proper process leading to bad decision making for future generations at worst, and in the best of situations ensuring correct decisions take place with full knowledge of impacts across a range of partner organisations and their environmental interest areas.

The degree combines multiple disciplines to give you a contemporary environmental context of development from a scientific and social perspective with practical tools to inform decision making.

Your programme of study

If you want to make a difference to climate change, you want to regulate from government or government agencies, provide consultancy advice or you simply enjoy the natural environment and you want as much of it preserved as possible and you want to learn how to manage it effectively for future generations, Environmental Management offers an excellent range of advanced assessment theory and practise. You learn how to manage the environment, land use and its challenges, and you learn the various pollutant testing skills and knowledge to help you determine how best remediate. Environment Managers are involved in all types of land use which include onshore and offshore regulation, planning and development control, waterways management, soil management and the various analysis tools which are accepted as calibrated and effective in giving correct indications of pollution to ensure companies remain compliant with the legal obligations.

There is often a conflict between land use and its protection. We now live in a world where air pollution is at record levels, population determines that we need clever ways to manage life and work, and land use planning is often at odds with natural flood prevention measures. The role of Environment Managers plays a critical role in determining our future generations and how they will live and interact with earth by ensuring the best possible outcomes in terms of regulation, negotiation and improvements to quality of life from the natural environment. You study pollution, resource management, catchment management EIA (Environmental Impact Assessments). Work can include consultancy, regulators and NGOs.

If you are interested in earth science, and environmental science but you want to specialise in the study of soil specifically the Aberdeen programme gives you in depth knowledge and a range of experts and alumni who consult at government level. Aberdeen is further supported by having the James Hutton Institute within the city limits, a notable institute specialising in soil science over the years known formerly the Macaulay Institute.

Soil Science is becoming increasingly important to our ability to sustain life on earth as we look at how to keep the soil clean from pollutants in water, air and polluting industries, pesticides and all sorts of changes to soil. There are also growing concerns that as the population increases and climate change also increases how do we farm in the future? The degree gives you all the skills and knowledge you need to work as a soil scientist either as a researcher, within government or regulation or as a consultant working with industry and other organisations devoted to soil science.

You learn about soil science, sustainability, land use planning, food security, GIS, and land use with intensive laboratory analysis from one of the top centres in the world for soil science. We also take you into the field to study specific situations and you are guided by our world renowned researchers in the environmental sciences. This is one of only a handful of Soil Science programmes with cutting edge technologies to help you analyse and study soil in depth. Your programme of study

You study with leading anthropologists to understand a range of human-environment relations in contemporary environmental issues. The issues and challenges in the environment make daily news reading across the globe, yet there is a tension between environmental concerns and economic benefit, human rights, landscape value, the rights of species to survive and management of natural resources. This is a very current discipline which will only grow in relevance to the environmental issues of the 20th century and this is where you can understand the issues that affect our life on the planet, in communities and how we utilise resources extra to the environment.

Human beings now live in what an increasing number of environmental scientists call the Anthropocene – a stage in the Earth’s geological and climate development that is dominated by the activities of humankind. Whether in the realm of conservation, biodiversity, evolution or climatology, no effective study of environmental issues can proceed without an understanding of human behaviour on both the large and the small scale.

You may be interested in working for conservation and activism organisations to promote understanding of the environment and threats to it, you may want to work in nature conservation or human centred environmental consultancy work to improve quality of life or change issues before they affect people and the environment.

Your programme of study

Ageing infrastructure from the golden days of the oil and gas and energy industry is now being identified for decommissioning. Some of it is in the North Sea but many other countries are increasingly realising that they need to decommission properly and effectively due to environmental regulation. Building a platform has provided a rapid and continuous learning process since the start of the energy industry but learning how to decommission a platform has now started a rapid learning experience about best practise methods across the supply chain and facilities available to deal with entire platforms and their various facilities are now an important concern.

The degree will cover all aspects of decommissioning process including engineering, legal, environmental regulation, business and project management risks and challenges across the oil and gas industry, You study the important aspects of offshore subsea systems, well plugging, offshore installations, project evaluating and economics, environment impact assessment process an regulation, and a group project in comparative assessment. You also look at process shutdown and disposal.  This is a highly complex area due to the level of environmental contaminants and different types of facilities to take down.

There are many oil and gas companies now decommissioning with the Brent Delta platform being a highly publicised example. You may be interested in reading about decommissioning from the Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy which gives you more information about the process, the companies involved and some examples of environmental statements and other useful information https://www.gov.uk/guidance/oil-and-gas-decommissioning-of-offshore-installations-and-pipelines

Your programme of study

Ecology is an important discipline to inform many different environmental management issues which often involve wider impacts being assessed for planning and other purposes. There is an increasing desire to utilise sites which are environmentally sensitive and this puts pressure on ecology and habitat survival. There are many other types of environmental impacts which are often hidden but also affect Ecology such as the many different pollutants which are often highlighted monthly. Species decline is becoming a well known issue globally and the ability to maintain and continue species and grow is important in a declining environment.

The programme comes from a very strong department which has been ranked consistently at number 1 in soil science and soil ecology in the UK (REF 2014). The Master's in Ecology has very solid foundations as it has been taught to generations for over 50 years and with this comes considerable knowledge and experience. With this programme you get a chance to influence how we utilise our environment and manage it to the best ability to preserve our ecology.

Our MSc programme provides flexibility to enable you to gain knowledge and skills to meet your career aspirations, whether in research or as a practicing ecologist. The programme runs through a full year, starting with a field course and culminating in a major research project. You will have the opportunity to gain hands on experience of everything from field survey to chairing discussions, from statistics and modelling to report writing and from identifying important ecological questions to researching them and writing a scientific paper. Your programme of study

Regulation of energy is a complex area covering everything across the supply chain. It is also fraught with controversy and advocates attempting to clean up the environment, often providing high profile press when things aren't seen as socially responsible. Energy law is a specialist area which is mainly concerned with the huge risks involved in extracting energy within wild and remote environments and dealing with waste products, removal of facilities, implementation of new facilities and operations with environment at the forefront of business operations. There are huge implications for corporate and social responsibility and the energy industry sees it as imperative that they get their regulation and responsibilities right. The negative effects of getting regulation wrong can be hugely costly and very damaging to reputation in a highly regulated and safety conscious industry.

The ability to manage the business through change without loosing time and money and understanding how to work with regulation from government level can be a challenge, especially when business does not follow a straight line of growth. You not only learn the law in terms of energy and environment but you also cover downstream regulation to customer supplies and renewable energy areas which you may also be involved with if you work for a large multinational for example. Many people are not aware of just how much work goes into getting regulation right for company and government and how much potential there is to save the environment from unnecessary practices which put all at risk. In this respect this is a very rewarding subject to study and work in if you are interested in environment and regulation.

Energy Law is an environmental range of laws specifically aligned to exploitation of minerals. Throughout the process you will learn about all the regulatory requirements within the supply chain from extraction to supply. Aberdeen is at the heart of the energy industry and you will benefit from industry networks and regulators situated in the city. This will give you a really good perspective and insight into the discipline and how it is transferred to employment in the energy industry internationally.
