    The Department of Anthropology at Goldsmiths has played a significant role in the development of new fields and directions in the discipline, such as the anthropology of Europe and the anthropology of media. Anthropology at Goldsmiths has above all a contemporary orientation, and contributes both to the development of the academic discipline and to the world outside it. This happens through advocacy in a range of areas – from health to community work, from development to music and art, from urban planning to brain imaging – in which anthropology is active and relevant in public domains in Britain and elsewhere. In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 our research outputs were classified as 'internationally excellent or of internationally recognised quality, with good evidence of world-leading outputs across a range of specialist areas and staff submitted' – particularly impressive as we submitted all staff.

    Staff research interests cover geographical regions including the Caribbean, Latin America, east, southern and central Africa, the Pacific, south, central and south-east Asia, and Britain, Europe and the USA. Specialisms include visual anthropology and representation; material and popular culture; the human/animal interface; medical anthropology; psychology and health; anthropology of science and law; the environment; neo-colonialisms, postcolonialisms and history; the state, politics and democracy; peasantries; globalisation and development; work and cities; economic institutions and bureaucracies; post-socialism; kinship, children and gender; time and temporalities; gambling.

    The Department is involved with various Goldsmiths Research Centres (Centre for Cultural Studies, Centre for Urban and Community Research, Centre for the Study of Invention and Social Process, and Centre for Cognition, Computation and Culture) and with a number of Area Studies Institutes in the University of London (Institute for the Study of the Americas, Institute of Commonwealth Studies, School of Slavonic and East European Studies).

    The Centre for Visual Anthropology is part of the Department of Anthropology at Goldsmiths, and its emergence reflects various research themes in the Department as well as postgraduate programmes involving photography, filmmaking, museum studies and anthropology. The MA in Visual Anthropology, MRes, and MPhil/PhD programmes include substantial practice components, and the Department is equipped with its own studio facilities. The Centre is linked with an international community of anthropological filmmakers and photographers, and maintains strong connections with documentary and museum activities in London. As well as its academic pursuits, the Centre provides a public forum for screenings, talks and seminars related to all aspects of anthropology, documentary and the visual arts.

    Goldsmiths’ Department of Art has an international reputation for creativity and innovation that attracts students from a diversity of nationalities and backgrounds. Our particular expertise is helping artists, writers and curators reflect on the demands of individual practice in relation to the wider visual culture; and to scrutinise the discourses which define the nature of contemporary visual culture and the importance of particular visual images and seminal representations to that culture. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirmed that the Department of Art has retained its position as one of the top Fine Art research departments in the country.

    Facilities

    Following rapid expansion in the Department of Art over the last two decades, a spectacular new building designed by Alsop & Partners for Goldsmiths opened its doors to students in January 2005. This stunning building provides purpose-built teaching space on campus, including art studios, lecture theatres, and cutting edge digital media labs.

    The large north elevation of the building is entirely glazed, flooding the building with natural daylight and revealing the unique mix of studios and digital media research laboratories within. The studios are naturally ventilated and benefit from generous floor to ceiling windows. A two-storey chunk of the box space has been removed at high level to leave a roof terrace; this is wrapped with a metal structural scribble making the building an unmistakeable landmark on the South London skyline. The result is a structure visible from a considerable distance.

    The Department provides space for art studios, performance work, installations, temporary projects and exhibitions as well as a range of research laboratories. You are allocated a tutor and a studio space appropriate to your needs. You also have access to the Rutherford Building, which integrates library, computing and language learning facilities. It allows access to information for learning, scholarship and research at a single point, breaking down the boundaries between traditional and electronic resources.

    Research laboratories include:

    –Casting: facilities include waste moulding, piece moulding, plaster casting, running and turning, plaster fabrication, flexible moulding (Vinamould), wax casting, stone sawing.

    –Constructed Textiles: AVL and Jacquard computerised weaving, table loom weaving, computerised double bed knitting, flat bed machine knit, gun tufting/carpet carver, tapestry.

    –Digital Media and Video Research Laboratory: open access facility employing Macintosh systems equipped with various DTP and image manipulation packages as well as web authoring and special effects software for video, DVD and audio, scanning and high quality ink-jet printing. Video facilities include mini-DV, DV cam, S-VHS and VHS formats, editing suites with Media 100, Avid and After Effects, and an audio station supporting audio cassette, mini disc and employing Pro-Tools.

    –Metalwork: facilities include gas, Tig, Mig, spot welding, plasma cutting, shot blasting, cutting, rolling, folding.

    –Photography: fully-equipped photographic studio, black and white, and colour darkrooms, a range of traditional and digital cameras available on loan, as well as lights and tripods. The laboratory also supports digital image production.

    –Print and Dye: silkscreen, devoré and discharge printing, heat transfer, digital printing, fabric and yarn dyeing, Mimaki large format digital printer.

    –Printmaking: facilities include etching/photoetching, silkscreen/photo-silkscreen, blockprint, large format inkjet printing (24, 44 and 60 inches), laser printing, scanning, CD burning.

    –Stitch and Fabric: computerised machine embroidery, Industrial and portable sewing machines, some portable Bernina sewing machines available for student loans, hand embroidery, pattern cutting/garment construction, fabric manipulation and soft sculpture.

    –Woodwork: facilities include pillar drills, stretcher making machine, wood and metal lathe, milling machine, circular, radial, jig and band saws.

    Our Art programmes aim to equip you with the necessary skills to develop independent thought and confidence in your practice. In addition, these skills are of use in other career paths you may wish to follow. Students have been successful in many fields including media, museums, galleries, education, the music business and academia. Many have continued to be successful, practising artists long after graduating, and have won major prizes and exhibited around the world. The Turner Prize shortlist has consistently included at least one of our former graduates. Six of the prize-winners have studied here – Grenville Davey, Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Gillian Wearing, Steve McQueen and Mark Wallinger.

    Computing is a vibrant, innovative and challenging department at Goldsmiths, focusing on the advancement of computing in many different technological areas including artificial intelligence, biology and genetics, cognitive science, computer games and entertainment, computer music, computer vision, design, digital arts, archaeology and architecture, and haptics. We are one of the leading department in Europe for the combination of mainstream computing research and its creative and innovative application in groundbreaking interdisciplinary areas. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 confirmed that our research outputs are 'of a quality that is internationally recognised, internationally excellent and in a significant proportion of cases, world leading'. Assessors also commented that 'the interdisciplinarity of the submission [was] strongly commended and contributes substantially to the diversity of UK research in this area.'

    In the last few years, we have attracted over £5million in research funding for particular projects and have built Goldsmiths Digital Studios, a multi-disciplinary research centre that links computing to other leading Goldsmiths departments and centres including Art, Cultural Studies, Design, Drama, Media and Communications, Music, and Psychology.

    Our research projects are funded by the arts and business sectors as well as the UK research councils including: the Arts Council, AHRC, Department of Trade and Industry, EPSRC, European Space Agency, and also BT, Yahoo Research, and various art galleries and other organisations (including Tate Modern). Most of our research involves collaboration with other world-class institutions including Brown University, Concordia University and Hexagram, MIT, and the University of Technology, Sydney.

    We provide an exciting, stimulating and supportive environment for all our students to develop their ability to understand computing and related technologies and to apply their skills in innovative and creative ways, particularly in relation to software engineering, art, music, games, entertainment, design, cognition, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. Because of our international reputation we attract high-level post-doctoral staff and visiting research fellows, who significantly enhance our research community.

    Goldsmiths Digital Studios
    Goldsmiths Digital Studios is dedicated to multi-disciplinary research and practice across arts, technologies and cultural studies. We engage in a number of research projects, and our projects aim to have outputs of interest in at least two of our disciplines. It is the mission of the Studios to bring several disciplines and departments together to stimulate research and to provide integrated postgraduate teaching. As well as other departments within Goldsmiths, we operate through a network of key institutional alliances and relationships with individuals. In addition, we work with several artists and independent researchers.

    The Department of Design is dynamic, contemporarily engaged and forward thinking. The College’s interdisciplinary intellectual climate affords the Department the unique opportunity to draw upon a wealth of critical, theoretical and creative perspectives, which in turn shape the distinct – and often radical – design practices, educational programmes and research that are pursued.

    Design has a huge influence on the way we live. In an increasingly uncertain world – facing, for instance, climate change, globalised consumerism and social fragmentation – designers need to think more deeply, critically and creatively about their activities than ever before. Appreciating this, we have developed contemporarily engaged and future-sensitive postgraduate programmes that cultivate versatile, pioneering design practitioners, critically aware of their responsibilities to the environment and of the ethical dimension of their activities in influencing social processes and cultural formation.

    We produce graduates of consistently high calibre, many of whom have become leaders in the creative industries in a number of countries, including China, Japan and Korea. Our students have won numerous awards (including UK Young Designer of the Year and Eco-Designer of the Year) and their shows have attracted positive attention in the media and achieved great acclaim in the design community. A number of graduates are now working in top London design consultancies (Fitch, Thomas Heatherwick Studios, Imagination, Pentagram) and major UK companies (John Lewis Partnership, Eden Project, Harvey Nichols).

    All members of academic staff are research active, which enables the Department to remain at the cutting edge of both theory and practice and consequently keep its educational programmes current. We are renowned for important research in sustainability, design education, interaction design, critical practice, user experience, materials, design thinking and futures, and our research received the top mark awarded to a design department nationally in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). In the RAE 2008, assessors noted that 'there are world-leading outputs in each of the three groups identified in the submission that demonstrate a significant contribution to debate and discourse within their fields'. The Department was also praised for its 'dynamic' environment and 'well-developed and well-articulated research strategy'.

    The reputation of the Department is further established through the exemplary work of its design practitioners, who produce internationally acclaimed commercial and exhibition work.

    Facilities
    The Department of Design has a suite of general manufacturing workshops for modelling and making, in a broad range of rigid, flexible and mouldable materials (including a laser cutter and a starch modeller). There is a dedicated computing suite enabling 2D, 3D, media, multimedia and CAD/CAM design works. All students also have individual studio space.

    The Department of Educational Studies encompasses a wide range of research interests, and is committed to promoting a research culture among staff and students. We are one of the largest departments at Goldsmiths, and are well established as a centre for innovative initial teacher education, professional development, and special programmes funded by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA).

    Our current research activity is in these main areas: art in education; bilingualism in education; children and popular culture; comprehensive education; curriculum policy and practice; equity and social justice; gender studies; identities, cultures and the curriculum; racism and education; sexuality and education; spatial aspects of education; and visual cultures and education.

    Our students come from a diversity of social and cultural backgrounds, some from South East London, others from all over the UK and increasingly from overseas. Many come to us after a break from full-time education.

    The Department of English and Comparative Literature at Goldsmiths combines research strengths in English, European and American literatures. Our staff come from a variety of cultural backgrounds – and, with their diverse research interests, they are ideally equipped to help you develop your own interests whether they lie in American, British, Caribbean, Irish, French, German, Spanish or postcolonial literatures. Our thriving research environment unites traditional strengths with innovation, covering a wide range of interests in language and literature from the 1300s to the present day.

    Principal areas of research activity are:

    –the modernist period in Europe, Britain, Ireland, and the Americas
    –literatures of the Americas (including Caribbean writing)
    –contemporary literature, including women’s writing, English, Irish, American and European poetry, and postcolonial writing
    –critical/literary theory and linguistics
    –English medieval and Renaissance literature, including Shakespeare and Renaissance popular culture
    –French literature of the 17th and 20th centuries
    –English literature of the 18th and 19th centuries
    –German and Austrian literature of the 18th and 20th centuries
    –English Romantic literature, including theatre
    –creative writing, especially fiction, poetry and translation
    –comparative literature, especially the study of 19th- and 20th-century verbal and visual texts.

    Staff are working on diverse topics such as literature and politics, literature and photography, satire, and biographical and autobiographical writings. They regularly give papers at national and international conferences, and publish work in the international academic press. Our postgraduate research activities continue to develop (most recently in the expansion of creative writing and comparative literatures), and the number of research students in the department continues to grow. We welcome applications for research in any area suited to the interests of our staff.

    According to the REF 2014 results, 74.4% of publications by the department's staff are judged as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent', ranking ahead of many other prestigious English departments throughout the UK. For research intensity (percentage of staff included in the exercise) Goldsmiths' Department of English and Comparative Literature is in the top 20.


    Academic support

    London, and the University of London in particular, offers students an excellent range of research facilities in literary, linguistic and cultural studies. We work closely with the School of Advanced Study and its specialist Institutes for English Studies, Germanic and Romance Studies, and Study of the Americas. As a postgraduate you can apply for a reader’s pass to the British Library, which houses the Official Publications Library as well as specialist collections. We hold regular research seminars at which staff, students, and invited visiting speakers present papers or discuss research in a constructive environment, followed by the opportunity for more informal discussion. The Department has established a major series of guest events, the Richard Hoggart Lectures in Literature, bringing key figures from the creative and critical spheres (recently, for example, Alan Bennett, Judith Butler, Terry Eagleton, Tony Harrison, Seamus Heaney, Andrew Motion and Tom Paulin) to speak at Goldsmiths.

    Centre for Caribbean Studies

    Established to develop and support Caribbean studies within Goldsmiths, the Centre for Caribbean Studies offers a resource for students and staff through its programme of activities relating to all aspects of Caribbean culture, and organises a regular programme of events, seminars and conferences. Central to the activities of the Centre is interdisciplinary research led by CAFSRA.

    History at Goldsmiths takes place within a lively, interdisciplinary Department with specialists in visual history, oral history, the history of ideas, art and medicine, feminist history, interfaith relations and philosophy. The Department offers an expanding and flexible range of taught postgraduate programmes, covering medieval studies, contemporary thought, debates and methods in cultural history and visual history, as well as supervision in interdisciplinary research. The distinctive emphasis of Goldsmiths History is an approach to research and teaching which is theorised, interdisciplinary and comparative; the culture of the Department is open, friendly and accessible.

    Research students are encouraged to be innovative in their use of sources and methodologies. Research training takes place inside the Department by specialists in their field, and in courses held in common at the Institute of Historical Research in Senate House, London WC1. This means that research students in History at Goldsmiths can belong to both the diverse and interdisciplinary range of students across the University, and the London community of graduates centred at the Institute of Historical Research. At the same time, because the Department of History at Goldsmiths is small (11 full-time and one part-time member of staff, one research fellow, and between 30 and 40 research students), research students have individual attention from more than one member of staff, and through the Goldsmiths History seminar, as well as regular (student-organised) workshops and conferences, can get to know everyone in the Department. The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008 noted that 'postgraduate activity was outstanding' in terms of research environment, and that the Department has "a very large and well supported research student community."

    Staff have editorial involvement with African Affairs, History Workshop Journal, and Psychoanalysis and History, and contribute to projects including The New Dictionary of National Biography. We have received grants from the Arts Council, AHRC, the British Academy, the Leverhulme Trust, Nuffield Social Sciences, and the Wellcome Trust. In recent years, staff have helped to host a series of interdisciplinary conferences and colloquia in Cultural History, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, History of Ideas, and Religious Studies, and have attended conferences in locations from Florence to Korea.

    The Department also provides the base for a collaborative venture with the State University of Pennsylvania, for the UK’s first online refereed electronic journal in the humanities.

    The Goldsmiths History Seminar is a chance to discuss papers presented by staff, postgraduates, and guest speakers. Working Papers in Cultural History and Philosophy are published online within the Department.

    The Department of Music at Goldsmiths, with its lively and varied research base, large postgraduate community, active performing tradition, and proximity to the resources of the capital, provides an exhilarating environment for postgraduates. We are particularly proud of the research training that we provide for postgraduate students at all levels, and of the connections we are able to make between our research activities and our teaching.

    Events and opportunities
    Various research seminar series are held within the department, to some extent led by the specialist research centres, most of which run their own focussed series of talks, seminars and performances. Graduate Forum, which all Master’s students are expected to attend, also provides a space where visiting specialists provide expert input into the department’s work, and staff and students can present and discuss work, and consider contemporary issues related to their research.

    Twice a year there are one-day conferences giving you the opportunity to present your own work and to hear distinguished visiting speakers (including in recent years Eric Clarke, Nicholas Cook, Peter Kivy, Sir Roger Norrington, Sara Cohen and Richard Middleton). The department also regularly hosts national and international conferences, which have latterly included the Biennial International Conference on Twentieth-Century Music, and conferences of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology and the Society for Music Analysis.

    Recent visitors taking master-classes have included Peter Katin, Jane Manning, Piers Lane, Martino Tirimo, Crispian Steele-Perkins, Tatyana Sarkissova, Philip Mead and Boris Berman. The department holds a number of these events with outstanding performers in each academic year. Each year, we appoint at least one Ensemble-in-Residence to work with composers and performers in a variety of activities – concerts, workshops, recordings and master-classes. We support a prestigious ‘Meet the Composer’ series, consisting of visits from a variety of distinguished performers who in the past have included Judith Weir, George Benjamin, James Dillon, James MacMillan, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Dmitri Smirnov, Steve Martland, Howard Skempton, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, John Woolrich, Colin Matthews, Michael Finnissy, Javier Alvarex and Vladimir Tarnopolsky.

    The Goldsmiths Sinfonia and Chorus, which combine each term for a large-scale concert, are our principal performing bodies. Guest conductors in recent years have been included Mark Shanahan, Gregory Rose, Kenneth Burton and Vladimir Verbitsky, with soloists often selected from MMus students. Other departmental performing groups include the Contemporary Music Ensemble, the Goldsmiths Music Collective and the Chamber Choir. These, in addition to the biannual Composers Forum concerts, provide a platform for student compositions. Lunchtime concerts, featuring a wide variety of styles and genres, are held once or twice a week in the Council Chamber’s beautifully restored concert room (which seats 200) in the Deptford Town Hall Building.

    Politics at Goldsmiths is a new and expanding Department, teaching and undertaking research in various aspects of political life including: political theory; European and international politics; British politics; economics and political economy; art and politics; and public policy. Our greatest strength in politics is in pushing the boundaries of our discipline, and we are aided in this by being part of a College with a reputation for the innovative use of new social theory and for the strength of commitment it shows towards interdisciplinarity.

    Centre for Postcolonial Studies
    Postcolonial studies is expanding beyond its origins in literature to an engagement with epistemological, ethical and political questions. This interdisciplinary Centre provides a forum for those engaged in pushing postcolonialism into new domains to explore and disseminate new ideas through seminars, colloquia and conferences.     Goldsmiths’ Department of Psychology is a flourishing centre of study and research: one in every five of our students is a postgraduate. We strive for, and achieve, high teaching standards, as reflected by our teaching rating in the 2008 National Student Survey, which was in the top quarter of the 101 UK Psychology departments. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) we were ranked 24th in terms of the grade point average of our research activities and, in comparison with the last exercise (2001), we rose above all departments ranked equal to us and overtook a number of prestigious departments that were previously ranked above us. The panel noted that all six of our research clusters produced internationally excellent research, and 50% of our research activity was rated as being internationally excellent or world leading. This strong result reflected our research publications in academic journals and the reputation of our academic staff, but also the general research environment. This research environment is manifested in our success in attracting external grants from a wide range of national and international sources to employ additional research staff, in the ESRC’s recognition of our postgraduate training, and in our considerable success in winning competitive government funding for postgraduate studentships and postdoctoral fellowships.

    The Department’s research is structured around six main clusters.

    —The culture and cognition cluster investigates the impact of culture and language on visual perception and attention, categorisation behaviour and the development of cognition. The cognitive neuroscience of music is an active area within this cluster too. This cluster lies at the heart of Goldsmiths’ Centre for Cognition, Computation and Culture (CCCC), which aims to foster interdisciplinary research with other academic departments (such as Music, Anthropology and Computing) focusing on how neural, computational and cognitive models relate to cultural and social processes.

    —The individual differences and psychopathology cluster is one of the largest groups in the UK researching personality, intelligence, and clinical conditions such as depression and anxiety. A recent emphasis has been on behavioural genetics and gene-behaviour association studies.

    —Another cluster studies social relationships within couples, and by investigating imitation in children and primates. The internationally respected Unit of School and Family Studies focuses on the changing nature of grandparenting, and on studies of bullying, in a variety of national and international settings.

    —The Department’s neurodevelopmental disorders cluster carries out cutting edge studies on conditions such as visual impairment, autism and dyspraxia, focusing on changes in executive functions, movement ability, musical ability and the preservation of special abilities.

    —The large cognitive psychology, neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience cluster carries out research in basic processes in attention and working memory, integration across sensory modalities, memory learning, eye-witness identification, and musical cognition. Neuropsychological research with patients addresses their awareness of deficits and attempts rehabilitation. The neurofeedback group investigates the use of this technique in therapy and ‘peak performance’ training. This cluster has a strong neuroscientific perspective, recently consolidated by the acquisition of a superb new research suite equipped with highly-specialised, state-of-the-art EEG, eye-tracking, computational modelling and psychopharmacology facilities.

    —Within our work psychology cluster, current foci of research include employee selection and assessment, maximising performance in the workplace, and occupational health psychology in relation to work design, organisational change, stress management, and working after chronic illness.

    The Department has additional strengths in anomalistic psychology and digital consumer research. The Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit investigates extraordinary phenomena of experience and behaviour, including those often labelled as ‘paranormal’. In digital consumer research the Department has formed a ‘spin-out’ company, i2media, which aims to understand the digital media experiences and needs of consumers. The company’s research runs alongside related academic projects within the Department.

    We have a strong and active interest in applying psychological theory to real-world issues and problems. Recent examples of our research which have had a direct influence on practice and policy include work on eye-witness identification, bullying, rehabilitation after brain injury, consumer use of digital media, stress in the workplace, and return to work after serious illness.

    The resources underpinning our ability to carry out these varied types of research include well-established connections with other universities and research groups both in this country and internationally, and with a wide range of agencies and organisations in the public and private sectors, including hospitals, schools, charities, government bodies, and commercial organisations. These links provide excellent opportunities for students to become involved in collaborative research in many different settings. Postgraduates also have access to excellent research facilities in the Department: in addition to new laboratories, we have several existing testing rooms, dedicated observational suites with high calibre video equipment, a wide range of equipment for laboratory and field research, and a well-stocked psychological test library. There is a dedicated computer laboratory for postgraduate use, and all doctoral students have shared office space and their own computer.

    The Department of Social, Therapeutic and Community Studies has a national and international reputation for excellence in teaching and learning, community engagement and applied research.

    A key aspect of our activity is the delivery of high-quality programmes at pre, qualifying and post-qualifying levels in a number of important professional areas. These areas include social work, counselling, art psychotherapy, dance movement psychotherapy, community arts, community development and community and youth work. As a result our graduates are well-placed in terms of employability and their skills fit well with the expectations of organisations linked to social, community and health care in London as well as further afield.

    We are proud of our longstanding commitment to addressing issues of social injustice in our teaching and the range of opportunities we offer for work-based learning across London and the South East.

    Goldsmiths’ Department of Sociology is one of the largest in the UK. We have an established reputation for our contribution to contemporary sociological thought, and offer a vibrant and expanding research culture. We have a wide range of staff who lead research in their specialist fields, a lively mixture of students, and excellent facilities. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, we were placed in the top ten universities in the UK for the quality of our research. The Department is committed to excellence in teaching and learning, and we achieved the highest judgement of ‘confidence’ in a recent QAA developmental engagement.

    Staff have been awarded research grants by the ESRC, the AHRC, the Leverhulme Trust, the Wellcome Trust, the Health Education Authority, the Nuffield Trust, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, and a variety of government departments and charitable trusts. We carry out collaborative research with academics in other UK universities and in Australia, Canada, Europe, and the United States. Each year we welcome leading international researchers as Visiting Fellows in the Department, and in the Centre for Urban and Community Research, the Centre for the Study of Invention and Social Process and the Centre for the Study of Global Media and Democracy, which we jointly sponsor. We publish widely in the form of books, contributions to journals, and press articles.

    We are committed to developing the discipline of sociology by involving all members of the Department in research and scholarship in a national and international context; to furthering knowledge and theory; and to the understanding and improvement of contemporary social conditions, practices and policies. We link teaching at postgraduate level with staff research specialisms, to their mutual benefit. As a result, postgraduate work takes place within a stimulating and challenging research culture.

    We also have a commitment to engaging with contemporary issues, as shown in our work on ‘race’, ethnicity and racism; gender and sexuality; class; culture and performing arts; markets and consumer culture; biomedicine, biotechnology and psychiatric illness; urban life and the inner city; culture and technology; and politics, law and governance. We have a strong emphasis on theoretical sociology, and on the development of rigorous approaches to sociological issues, in integration with advanced methods of analysis.

    The thriving research culture of the Centre for Urban and Community Research has enabled it to develop an international reputation in several areas, notably ‘race’, asylum, refugees, identity; residence, housing, associational politics; community participation, participatory democracy, regeneration; and photography and visual cultures.

    The Centre for the Study of Invention and Social Process aims to develop innovative projects and creative research that bring together science, technology and the arts in order to explore, for example, the nature of interdisciplinarity, the methodological relation between sociology and design, and the potential intellectual impact of ‘lost’ thinkers such as Whitehead and Tarde. The Unit for Global Justice studies both the legal and ethical implications of contemporary social change and the role that law itself plays in a rapidly changing world. The Unit aims to bring together researchers and practitioners concerned with changing social and technical forms and their implications for how we understand law and justice.

    The future of democracy is inseparable from the capacities of media – at all scales from the local to the global. Both the sustainability and the expansion of democracy depend on what media institutions do and what spaces media make possible. The complexity of these processes requires interdisciplinary research across politics, sociology and media. The Centre for the Study of Global Media and Democracy was set up in September 2007 to address these connections. The Centre brings together researchers from Goldsmiths’ Departments of Media and Communications, Sociology, and Politics. It hosts public lectures and debates, research symposia, and seminar series.

    The interdisciplinary Centre for Cultural Studies, launched in 1997, organises many research activities relevant to students in Sociology.

    Drama at Goldsmiths focuses on theorised practice. We carry out our research as much through practice-based projects as through theorisations of performance and explorations of textual practice. We aim to make work in a variety of media that reflects on and contributes to innovation in contemporary production and performance practice.

    Our written work encompasses theatre history, dramaturgy and play-writing, performance theory, criticism and interpretation. We maintain links with arts organisations and practitioners throughout Britain, and in Europe, North America, South Africa, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam and Australia. This not only provides a resource network which supports our research activity, but also enables us to offer placement opportunities for postgraduates on programmes such as the MAs in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy, and Applied Drama: Theatre in Educational, Community and Social Contexts.


    Facilities

    Located within easy travelling distance of the South Bank Arts complex, Tate Modern, London’s West End, the Theatre Museum, the National Sound Archive and the British Museum, Goldsmiths offers obvious advantages to students of performance. The Department of Theatre and Performance works in close partnership with many of London’s leading performance venues and cultural organisations, and you will have access to one of the largest concentrations of performance practice in Europe.

    Our own theatre has seating for 160 and is used for both teaching and public performances. We also have three performance studios; scenic, sound and costume workshops; and design studio facilities. Visual design, sound and video modules are taught in our own studios, supported by the College’s excellent editing facilities. The Department’s academic staff are assisted by a team of four experienced technicians.

    The Department of Theatre and Performance houses the office of the British Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), a UNESCO-funded organisation which is the largest theatre network in the world. The Pinter Centre was founded as a Research Centre in 2003. It was primarily concerned with research related to performance. The Centre has now moved its remit wider, to embrace both performance and writing, becoming the focus for the many different writing courses and staff research concerned with writing within Goldsmiths. In 2005 the Centre ran a conference on Sondheim: collaborator and auteur, and in 2006 co-ordinated a major conference on the work of playwright Mark Ravenhill. The Centre has encouraged proposals for a range of interdisciplinary activities which at present include potential events within the Screen School (Department of Media and Communications) and with the Goldsmiths Digital Studios on e-poetry.

    The Department has an archive of performance videos, while the College Library houses the LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre) Video Collection, as well as a wide range of material on all aspects of performance. We can also arrange for students to have access to specialist collections housed in, for example, the British Library and the Theatre Museum.

    Our MA programmes reflect and contribute to some of the most exciting work in contemporary theatre-making and performance. They seek to develop specialist knowledge and skills by bringing you into close engagement with current approaches in an environment that encourages critical reflection on the work that you are making. Research methodologies are integral to all the MA programmes, preparing you for research at a higher degree level.

    The programmes aim to build a bridge between the worlds of international professional theatre and the academy – aspiring to standards of work that will gain recognition in both arenas. The Department of Theatre and Performance works in close partnership with many of London’s leading performance venues and cultural organisations. A number of our staff are professional theatre-makers and we enjoy good working relationships with professional specialists and practitioners who make important contributions to our programmes. In the past few years, our tutors have come from more than fifty theatres, companies and arts organisations. These include: BAC; Birmingham Rep; Cambridge Arts Theatre; Complicité; Frantic Assembly; Heart and Soul; Moti Roti; the National Theatre; Paines Plough; the Royal Court; Sadler’s Wells; Soho Theatre; Talawa; Tamasha; Tara Arts; Theatre Centre; the Young Vic; Arts Council England; Arts and Business; Creative Partnerships; Live Arts Development Agency; LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre); PAN Centre for Intercultural Arts; and Writernet. We also benefit from lectures, seminars, workshops and masterclasses given by a large and diverse range of playwrights, performers, live artists, directors, designers and literary managers.

    The Department of Visual Cultures brings together researchers, lecturers and students committed to exploring – and producing – new forms of contemporary art-theoretical practice in an environment that is culturally diverse and intellectually challenging.

    We specialise in the histories and theories of modern and contemporary visual practices from around the world. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, we look at ways in which art engages with urgent social, cultural and political issues in the world. Therefore we explore visual culture within a framework of critical theory, philosophy and cultural studies. Included are issues of cultural difference, performativity, visual display, aurality, encounters with audiences and the production of subjectivities.

    Our approach to learning, teaching and research at all academic levels is exploratory and innovative, yet rigorous. All students are encouraged to develop independence of thought by discovering, evaluating and making appropriate use of a wide range of historical, theoretical and creative approaches to research and writing. It is both what we teach, and how we do so, that gives our programmes their distinctive character in academia. Our research culture is vibrant and innovative. Several members of staff have been awarded prestigious research grants, and the Department actively fosters collaborative connections with theorists and visual art practitioners working nationally and internationally.

    The Department hosts a weekly guest lecture series, plus interdisciplinary workshops and conferences. We also maintain links with international institutions such as Humboldt University in Berlin, the Helsinki Academy of Arts, and TU, Vienna.

    The Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship (ICCE) delivers enterprise education to the creative and cultural sectors, and supports research in to new approaches to business and financial models in the creative economy. It delivers a range of academic programmes and presents activities and events to promote an environment in which creative and cultural entrepreneurship can flourish. Our approach is to integrate entrepreneurship within the development of creative practices, and to take a creative approach to the development of new businesses and the infrastructure that supports them.

    ICCE takes the view that entrepreneurship is the creation of value – this value could be social, aesthetic or financial, and when entrepreneurial activity is strong the three strands are interwoven.
