Geoscience offers non-thesis Master's degrees in both Geology and Geophysics. The course-based M.Sc. program provides B.Sc. graduates with advanced academic training. The program is suitable for both full-time and part-time mature students who may already be in the workforce with relevant work-experience, but wish to obtain an advanced degree without taking a leave of absence. Food Sciences on the Viikki campus is a nationally unique programme that covers the whole food production chain from primary production via food processing to consumers. Food Sciences is an internationally appreciated field of education: food research at the University of Helsinki has been highly ranked.

Your masters' studies in food sciences will enable you to make an impact on the the creation of innovative solutions for the whole chain of food production. You will:
-Study the theory and applications of the broad area of food sciences in lecture courses and in group work.

Selection of the Major

The Postgraduate Diploma in International Dispute Resolution – Mediation not only provides an understanding of the theoretical, practical and ethical problems relating to international mediation, but can also provide a stepping stone for professionals to become involved in international alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes.

You will be taught by the School of International Arbitration, a centre for research and teaching in International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution at Queen Mary.

Mediation is developing at great speed in many countries. For example, it is part of the civil justice system of England and Wales through the Civil Procedure Rules and the provisions in the rules which encourage the use of mediation.

This diploma is aimed not only at lawyers, but also at other professionals who may be involved in mediation - be it as a disputant, representative or perhaps as a mediator. The course will introduce you to the process of mediation and its role in the resolution of disputes.

The core module, Alternative dispute resolution, interprets the subject as a truly interdisciplinary field comprising of law, social science, economics, psychology and others. This is a newly emerged and vibrant area of scholarship, hence it is impossible to give yes or no answers to most of the questions. Accordingly, the module will employ critical thinking and an open discussion approach. It is expected that you will be willing to share results of your research and be involved in active discussion of all issues.

There are two distinct International Dispute Resolution diploma routes to choose from, Arbitration or Mediation.

If you choose to specialise in Mediation this programme will:

Overview

Our course will help you define your photography practice and become a critical practitioner.

You’ll learn to experiment, to carry out research and disseminate your work. The course focuses on the relationship of practice to research and research to practice, the role of sequence and series in developing your visual language, the relationship between text and image, and the latest important issues in photographic theory and practice.

You’ll explore the global industry that is modern-day photography, and form an understanding of current debates and opportunities.

Your work will be supported by a team of experienced photographers and researchers with wide-ranging interests and specialisms. You’ll receive guidance on many photographic processes, from documentary and fine art to institutional or historical critique, and traditional or found photography to digital technical innovation. And we'll be able to offer expert advice on your future career.

Careers

Who should study this course?

Are you:
a Secondary Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) teacher who wishes to gain a GTC recognised additional teaching qualification in Spanish?
a Primary, Further or Adult Education teacher who would like to improve your Spanish for teaching purposes?
an advanced student of Spanish (Higher+) who wishes to gain a University Diploma in Spanish for work purposes or for personal interest?
If the answer to any of the above questions is "yes", then this course may be for you.

Residence Abroad

For those taking the Diploma course as an additional teaching qualification residence abroad is normally a prerequisite for Scottish GTC registration in Spanish (Secondary). This period of residence has to be arranged by course participants themselves.

The next start date is September 2014, and the course lasts for 18 months.

How you will be taught

The course comprises online modules of approximately ten weeks' duration each, and includes weekly online (Skype/Adobe Connect) sessions. There are also three or four Spanish Immersion days per academic year held in Dundee (usually on a Saturday).

How you will be assessed

The choice of assessments and the project allow you to focus on you own specific interest areas.

You will learn to make your knowledge accessible and interesting to students by implementing a range of teaching approaches and techniques for managing activities in the classroom.

The PGCE Secondary programme refreshes and extends students’ subject knowledge and provides them with the opportunity to achieve Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and make a difference to young people’s lives and ambitions.

The programme is divided into university and school/college-based sections. The 12-week university-based section is taught by highly respected staff with extensive experience of secondary school provision.

Our tutors will introduce students to various aspects of teaching, including lesson planning, resource preparation and selection, teaching approaches for examination courses, class management and control, and assessment of attainment.

Trainees will spend the other 24 weeks gaining Professional Teaching Experience (PTE) on two placements at our established partner schools/colleges located across the South Wales region from Pembrokeshire to Monmouthshire. On both these placements, an experienced teacher will act as mentor and will keep in close contact with university tutors to ensure the smooth development of the trainee’s teaching competences. Placements will be available in either English or Welsh-medium secondary schools.

The programme involves four written assignments, while the PTE will be assessed through teaching observations by both experienced placement mentors and university tutors against the QTS.

Entry Criteria

You will be expected to hold a good honours degree (2:2minimum) and be a graduat of a university, polytechnic or college of higher education approved by the University of Wales. If you wish to teach in Secondary schools then your degree should be closely linked to the subject that you wish to teach.

For the September 2015 entry all PGCE applicants in Wales will need a B grade at GCSE in English and Mathematics and if you intend to follow your course through the medium of Welsh, a C grade in Welsh.

If you hold a C grade in GCSE English Language or Mathematics and are successful in other aspects of the selection process you will be given the opportunity to sit an equivalency test. If you are successful and you accept your place to study with us then you can start your programme as planned. Attendance at the workshops prior to the test is a compulsory part of the equivalency testing programme.

What are GCSE Equivalency Tests?

Successful completion of a GCSE equivalency test will enable you to proceed on to a PGCE course if you do not hold a GCSE B grade in English or Maths, the test is only available to students that have gained a grade C at GCSE level.

If you hold a C grade in GCSE English Language or Mathematics and are successful in other aspects of the selection process you will be given the opportunity to sit an equivalency test. If you successfully complete your equivalency test and you accept your place to study with SWWCTE then you can start your PGCE programme as planned.

Will I get any support before the test?

Yes. You are required to attend a one day workshop which is designed to help prepare you for the test with face-to-face support. On the day of your test you will also attend a half day workshop in the morning. has been developed to enable you to extend the PGDip Evidence-based Psychological Practice (Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner) into a MSc by undertaking a piece of empirical research. The research dissertation will allow you to follow your research interests in a topic related to low intensity CBT or a project related to a service-based development need in this area. Supervision is provided by a clinical/psychological therapies researcher with provision available to support project supervision over the telephone or through internet-based software applications to improve access to the programme.

To progress to the MSc you should have completed the research module as part of your PGDip. This course assists you and your supervisor in devising a training programme that meets your own very particular needs; gives you vital information about University processes and procedures; and helps you to understand your research work in its professional and academic context.

Also, this course provides the opportunity for all Mres/MPhil/PhD/Professional Doctoral students to meet and work together for a short period. Research work can sometimes be rather lonely and your discussions and debates are mostly with your own supervisor or immediate team. The opportunity to learn from others with a totally different perspective or even to link up with others dealing with the same agenda as yourself can make a major contribution.

The award is for all students: part time, full time as well as those students who study predominantly at a distance. You and your supervisor will decide the pace at which you will undertake the award. It will be determined by a combination of your own needs and the practicality of the availability of training opportunities.

Course content

Are there any exemptions to the Programme for research students?
Yes. First of all, some programmes here at the University run their own in-house research training that has been designed to earn you an exemption from the PgCert. Second, you might already have considerable research experience, in which case you can apply for an exemption to the University Research Degrees Committee.

Please keep in mind, however, that most research students will have completed some other taught Masters Award (MA, MSc, MBA etc) which has included research methods training. However, the types of skills required of a doctoral-level degree are generally qualitatively distinct from those required at masters level. Thus, simply having a Masters degree is not normally considered sufficient reason for exemption.

However, it is possible that on your masters award you achieved some of the specific outcomes of this award. There is a process within the PgCert (on the ‘learning contract’) for taking this into account, and giving you credit against knowledge and skills that you already possess.

When do I study the Programme?
There are two fundamental regulatory requirements.

First, you must have successfully passed the entire award prior to the formal assessment of your MPhil/PhD/Professional Doctorate. 

Second, you must complete the PgCert within two years of first enrolling on it.

It is strongly recommended that you start the PgCert as early as possible in your PhD studies, since part of its purpose is to give you advice and guidance concerning the early stages of your work. Since the Certificate can help you to get through the RDC1 proposal stage, it is additionally recommended that you begin the Certificate before completing your proposal.

The taught portion of this course is a single day workshop, run twice yearly for your convenience.

In common with the majority of higher education institutions the University has adopted a Credit System, which is based upon an estimate of the total time involved in the study of a module, including all of your own reading and assessment. As a guide, a single credit point approximates to 10 hours of study. This is a rough approximation for the average participant.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods is a 60 credit award, consisting of three modules. First, two 15 credits modules dealing with issues like the regulations and standards of Doctoral work, practical advice concerning working with your supervisors or managing your time, your personal and professional development, and reflection on how your research fits into a broader picture of research in general. Second, a 30 credit ‘negotiated’ module. So, the total extra time you will need to put into the Certificate is relatively modest.
