The Master of Education is a suite of postgraduate modules in professional development for teachers and professionals who work, or have experience of working, in an educational setting.

Why study for Master of Education at Dundee?

The Master of Education programme is essential for all professionals who work in an educational setting and wish to enhance their professional learning and improve career progression prospects. Students can tailor the educational experience to suit their individual experience, needs and interests. The programme can be accessed entirely at a distance via the University virtual learning environment. There are both workplace based and non-workplace based routes through the programme.

The programme is the first in Scotland to be accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organisation and by successfully completing the programme participants can register for an IB advanced certificate in teaching and learning research affording the opportunity of pursuing a career in public, private or international schools across the world.

Professional Accreditation

The course is fully recognised and accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS).

Who should study this course?

Entry to the programme is open to teachers and professionals with experience of working in educational settings who have a degree or equivalent and relevant experience. Applicants do not have to be currently employed in an educational setting. There is option for a non-workplace based route through the MEd programme as some modules do not require students to be in a workplace-based setting.

The programme is designed to develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes and professional values necessary to enhance international professional practice and builds upon competences developed through experience.

How you will be taught

The start date for this course is either September or March each year.

The Programme can take 2 to 3 years depending on a student's circumstances with modules being delivered by blended and distance learning and are supported by the use of the University's virtual learning environment. Study support is offered through our growing network of learning and study centres. Currently these are based at the University of Dundee but shortly will also be available through our collaboration with the Hellenic Association for Education in Athens, Greece.

Recognition for prior learning (RPL) is available for the MEd Programme. Claims for RPL must match to existing modules o the programme with equivalent content and be at the required SCQF level and SCOTCAT credits. Claims can be made, in exceptional circumstances, for up to 50% of the programme. If you have any questions about RPL

What you will study

Participants undertake two core and two optional modules, and either 1 x 60 credit, or 2 x 30 credit workplace projects at the final stage of the programme. There are modules available by distance learning or mixed mode delivery. The Master of Education is characterised by progression through Certificate, Diploma to Masters with exit points at each level.

These awards aim to build on professionals’ initial training and professionalism which has developed throughout their work experience. Because of the considerable distance learning element in the programme, significant individual support is offered through:

How you will be assessed

Individual modules have assessment tailored to aims and content of each module. Most module culminate with a written assignment based around content covered, or research completed, during the module.

Formative and summative assessments are designed to arise naturally from study and work. Major assessments focus directly on application in the workplace. Students are assessed on 4 x 30 credit modules plus a Workplace Based Project (60 credits).

Careers

A majority of students studying for Masters in Education at the University of Dundee are already in full time employment. In addition a number of students either already hold senior management positions or have moved into senior management positions during their time studying on the programme. By engaging with the MEd Programme students are able to influence their own Professional Learning journeys and take control of their own CPD.

As the Master of Education programme is for professionals with some teaching or educational experience the programme will not qualify you to teach in Scotland.

The M.Sc. in Medical Physics is a full time course which aims to equip you for a career as a scientist in medicine. You will be given the basic knowledge of the subject area and some limited training. The course consists of an intense program of lectures and workshops, followed by a short project and dissertation. Extensive use is made of the electronic learning environment "Blackboard" as used by NUI Galway. The course has been accredited by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (UK).

Human Gross Anatomy (5 ECTS)
The cell, basic tissues, nervous system, nerves and muscle, bone and cartilage, blood, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, nutrition, genital system, urinary system, eye and vision, ear, hearing and balance, upper limb – hand, lower limb – foot, back and vertebral column, embryology, teratology, anthropometrics; static and dynamic anthropometrics data, anthropometric dimensions, clearance and reach and range of movement, method of limits, mathematics modelling.

The University of London and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the global body for professional accountancy, are enabling you to complete an MSc in Professional Accountancy and your ACCA professional accountancy qualification at the same time. This route to the ACCA qualification will be of value to accountants aspiring to senior roles and enable them to stand out from the crowd in terms of their qualifications. Compared with the cost of studying for an accountancy qualification and a master’s separately, this will save time and money for many ACCA students.

The MSc modules are the first to be recognised by ACCA as counting towards the professional level of the ACCA qualification. You have flexibility regarding how you structure your studies and there are different pathways to the award depending on the level of entrance requirement that you have met. Who will benefit from this programme?

The opportunity to gain a prestigious master’s level qualification is open to ACCA students, affiliates and members, no matter what stage they are at in their professional qualification journey.

ACCA members who are qualified and affiliates who have completed all the ACCA assessments can follow a route to ‘top-up’ their professional qualification with this master’s.

ACCA students who have passed the fundamentals level of the ACCA qualification can opt to continue towards their ACCA qualification by using the master’s as an equivalent to two of their final ACCA papers.

Programme details

The three ACCA modules (P1 to P3) you study as part of your ACCA qualification give you accreditation for prior learning (APL) for 90 credits of your master's. The two University of London option modules will be recognised by ACCA as part of your professional qualification.

Interactive and supported study

You study using online learning resources that include: multimedia content, formative assessments, learning activities and facilities for you to interact with your tutor and your peers. You can study independently with online support including access to an online tutor or you can study at a teaching institution with access to a tutor face-to-face (if this is available in your location). In addition to monitoring online forums and responding to queries, online tutors provide an introduction to the module at the start of the session and guidance on assessment.

Your time commitment

You can study at the pace you choose whether part time or full time. You can complete the MSc in under a year or take longer if that is more convenient. Each module is studied over a 22 week session, requiring an average of 12 hours of study per week.

Assessment

The MSc and PG Certificate are assessed through a combination of elements including coursework, projects and written paper examinations. All elements of the assessment must normally be completed in the same study session. The grade awarded for each module will be based on all of the elements of assessment.

The examinations take place locally twice per year in June and December. You do not have to come to London to take your examinations because we have examination centres around the world as well as in London. We arrange the examinations mainly through Ministries of Education or the British Council. The LLM in Banking and Finance Law provides a thorough grounding in the fundamental principles of international finance and financial services law, covering local and international developments from practical, regulatory and policy perspectives. A wide range of regulatory and transactional areas are covered including, monetary law, banking law, financial regulation, central banking, securities law, secured transactions, corporate finance and M&As, insolvency cross-border insolvency, electronic banking, financing of developing economies, EU financial law and business ethics. You can choose from a wide selection of modules to design a programme of study that best facilitates your interests.

Our academics are engaged in current banking and finance policy making and legal regulatory reforms. In light of the recent economic global crisis and the ensuing new regulations, modules have been developed to reflect these changes, for example ‘Islamic Finance and Commercial Law’ and ‘Ethics in Business and in Finance’. This has led to the creation of a seminar series, featuring prominent figures from both industry and academia.

Professional Module Exemptions

The Chartered Banker Institute (CBI) has recognised masters programmes offered by the School of Economics and Finance for advanced standing for the Chartered Banker Diploma. Teaching And Assessment

Offering the opportunity for you to specialise in either works of art on paper or easel paintings conservation, this course consists of modules that will explore a range of key areas including conservation theory and practice, conservation science, art history and preventive conservation

You will leave with the technical skills required to undertake examinations, cleaning, structural repairs and stabilisation of works of art, in addition to an in-depth understanding of the historic significance artistic practice and materials play-in understanding artworks.

Significant emphasis is also placed on ethics and developing your skills in research development.

This course is primarily delivered through practical workshops where you will develop a wide range of skills using especially prepared materials and case studies selected from our unique archive collection. These activities inform and run parallel with work conducted on project paintings and other challenging artefacts.

Assessment methods focus on you applying your practical skills, academic concepts and theories to your project documentation and the authentically constructed materials that mirror real life scenarios. You will also undertake a dissertation to further demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of this subject.

Learning Environment

When studying the MA Conservation of Fine Art course you will be housed in a Grade II listed building in the heart of Newcastle city centre. You will be able to utilise techniques such as x-ray, infra-red reflectography, and ultraviolet florescence and false colour infrared photography to examine materials and artworks spanning centuries, in addition to gaining access to intriguing archives and cutting edge technology.

You may also have access to other advanced technologies such as UV fluorescence microscopy, polarised light microscopy (PLM), UV/VIS spectrophotometry, fourier transform infrared (FTIR), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX).

You will also receive ongoing support through our innovative e-learning platform, Blackboard, which will allow you to access learning materials such as module handbooks, assessment information, online lectures, reading lists and virtual gallery tours.

The project work and write-up are spread across 3 semesters. On the MSc HPE programme, the dissertation will require a systematic review, synthesis and critique of the literature, to produce a policy document, a set of practitioner guidelines, or a new theoretical model. On the MSc HPE (with Research), the dissertation will be a standard report of empirical research, incorporating a critical literature review, methodology, analysis and interpretation of findings, and conclusions drawn.

-Applicants will not need to commit to a specific programme until the beginning of Year 2. Indeed, all applicants will initially be registered on the MSc HPE programme, with the option to switch to the ‘with Research’ variant.
Summative assessment varies amongst courses, but includes coursework; quality contributions to online activities; a blog; online presentations; and the dissertation.

Areas of Study

There are two pathways available within the MA in Career Education, Information and Guidance in Higher Education: Route A and Route B. It is not necessary to finalise preferred route at the time of application as this can be confirmed later. Both pathways enable direct entry to the MA.

Route A
Route A includes the 3 x core 20 credit modules (including the Research Project module), a choice of 3 x 20 credit optional modules from the table below and a 60 credit module completed via a 15,000 word Dissertation (A). All participants start with the core modules: Career Development Theories and the next available Challenges of Careers Work in Higher Education module. Route B

There is significant support available through the extended course team consisting of Phil McCash (Warwick), Gill Frigerio (Warwick), Sharon West (Warwick), Linda Byrne (AGCAS), Jan Cornish (AGCAS) and a large group of highly experienced AGCAS Trainers and Mentors. Dissertation students are allocated a dissertation supervisor. Supervision is provided to assist you with undertaking an initial literature review, constructing research questions and designing a methodology. There is considerable experience available within the course team and most topics connected with higher education careers work can be pursued.

It provides the necessary practical, analytical and interpretative skills to apply a wide range of specialist approaches in archaeology. It aims to prepare students not only for research in archaeological science, but also to further career prospects in all areas of mainstream archaeology. Students normally follow one of three pathways.
-Environmental Archaeology focuses on subsistence and health through studies of animal bones, plant remains and biomarkers in human and non-human hard tissue. It also introduces environmental issues which impact on human beings, including environmental change.
-Landscape Archaeology focuses on understanding and interpreting landscapes in the past using scientific methods.
-Biomolecular Archaeology allows students to specialise in the use of biomolecular methods to study both human remains and artefacts.

Under the Health and Social Care Act (2012), the responsibility for approving Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) programmes in England now rests with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The two interdependent elements in this qualification are:
-Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) training
-Either a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or MA in Mental Health Practice

Employers are responsible for sponsoring students for this programme. They also provide practice placements to enable students to develop and their practice. This is assessed by means of a portfolio.

Why Bradford?

On completion of the first five modules, students will be eligible for the Post Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Practice and for approval as an AMHP by their employer. The AMHP Programme is approved by the HCPC, in line with their criteria for the approval of AMHP programmes.

Who is it for?

This course is aimed at students with a passion for computer games and a strong interest in programming. Internships delivered by City, University of London offer an exceptional opportunity to help you stand out in the competitive IT industry job market. The structure of the course extends the period for dissertation submission to January, allowing you to work full-time for up to six months. Teaching and learning

The teaching and learning methods we use mean that your specialist knowledge and autonomy increase as you progress through each module. Active researchers guide your progress in the areas of Games Development, Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence and Audio, which culminates with an individual project. This is an original piece of research conducted with academic supervision, but largely independently and, where appropriate, in collaboration with industrial partners.

Taught modules are delivered through a series of 20 hours of lectures and 10 hours of tutorials/laboratory sessions. Lectures are normally used to:

present and exemplify the concepts underpinning a particular subject;
highlight the most significant aspects of the syllabus;
indicate additional topics and resources for private study.
Tutorials help you develop the skills to apply the concepts we have covered in the lectures. We normally achieve this through practical problem solving contexts.

Laboratory sessions give you the opportunity to apply concepts and techniques using state-of-the-art software, environments and development tools. In addition, City’s online learning environment Moodle contains resources for each of the modules from lecture notes and lab materials, to coursework feedback, model answers, and an interactive discussion forum.

We expect you to study independently and complete coursework for each module. This should amount to approximately 120 hours per module if you are studying full time. Modules are assessed through written examination and coursework, where you will need to answer theoretical and practical questions to demonstrate that you can analyse and apply computer games technology methods.

The individual project is a substantial task. It is your opportunity to develop an autonomous research-related topic under the supervision of an academic member of staff. This is the moment when you can apply your learning to solve a real-world problem, designing and implementing a solution and evaluating the result. At the end of the project you submit a substantial MSc project report, which becomes the mode of assessment for this part of the programme.

The eight modules provide you with a firm grounding in computer games technology, including mathematics, programming, and game engines and architecture along with specialist topics in computer graphics, physics, AI, and audio.

The project component gives you an opportunity to carry out an extended piece of work under the supervision of one of our specialist academic and research staff, at the cutting edge of games technology, in an industrial or academic context.

Overview

This twelve month chemistry MSc is designed primarily for international students, either to act as a preparation for PhD studies or for students wishing to broaden their research experience and knowledge of chemistry within the context of the English language. The programme consists of six taught modules, worth a total of 90 credits, delivered in the first six months of the course followed by a substantial research project, also worth 90 credits. The modules will include both analytical and synthetic topics and a research project from a wide range of areas may be selected.

Because of their fundamental importance to chemical research, training in both NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction will be covered in depth using, predominantly, workshops, which are designed to quickly develop the students’ skills and confidence.

Aims of the course

To provide students with essential skills in the characterisation of materials by spectroscopic, structural and analytical techniques. This will be achieved with reference to organic, organometallic and polymeric materials.
To give students an in-depth experience of chemical research through individual, extended Masters research projects.
To develop confidence in the use of English oral and written skills within a chemical context.

Research Project

The research project constitutes one half of the course credits and assessment. Following examinations on the Taught Modules in January and May, successful candidates progress to a five month dissertation project (MSc) or an eight week research project (Diploma). Projects will be available in Biological, Organic, Inorganic, Materials, Polymer, Analytical, Structural and Theoretical Chemistry.

Facilities

The School has outstanding facilities, with for example 9 high resolution NMR spectrometers and 1 solid state, 3 area detectors and several powder systems for X-ray crystallography, and it hosts a national EPR service. Its research has been recognised both by funding bodies, who are currently providing over £40M of research grants, and by numerous national and international prizes and awards.

Our research community includes over 70 postdoctoral researchers and 220 postgraduate students. We have research links with over 80 different companies and over 150 overseas universities and research institutes.
