Overview

Our Master's course will take you on an in-depth exploration of the publishing industry, and equip you with vital skills for a career in publishing and many related fields.

By investigating areas like commissioning and editing, business management, marketing, production and publishing law, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge to plan and implement publishing projects in the context of emerging digital media.

You’ll benefit from many networking and career-building opportunities with publishing professionals, such as work placements, projects, field trips and guest lectures. Our professional mentoring scheme will provide you with your own mentor from industry according to your career interests, so you'll have the best possible introduction to the world of publishing.

We run a number of publishing and marketing short courses which our MA Publishing students can join for free. There's also the chance to win one of our annual bursaries and prizes, which are sponsored by distinguished organisations such as Cambridge University Press and the Worshipful Company of Stationers.

At the end of the course, you’ll undertake a Major Project, which might be a conventional academic project, a case study based on work experience, a creative piece with critical commentary or a business plan – the choice is yours.

Our MA Publishing was developed in close consultation with Cambridge University Press and other local publishers including ProQuest and Lutterworth's, so you can be confident it meets the professional needs of the publishing industry.

Course duration: 12 months full-time or up to 3 years part-time (September starts); 17 months full-time or up to 3 years part-time (January starts).

Teaching times: Mondays and Thursdays from 6-8pm plus 1 hour per semester (full-time); Mondays 6-8pm in Year 1 and Thursdays 6-8pm in Year 2 (part-time).

Careers

This course will equip you with knowledge and skills that will make you highly employable, in the publishing industry or any field that involves editorial work, marketing, business planning or project management. Our graduates have a track record of success: 100% of students have gone into paid employment within six months of graduating, with more than 90% in publishing-related careers at companies such as Bloomsbury, Wiley Capstone, Pearson, Cambridge University Press and Macmillan.*

Assessment

You’ll demonstrate your progress through a combination of essays, reports, business plans and book proposals, individual and group presentations (with professionally prepared handouts) and your final Major Project.

Work placements and internships

You’ll be able to apply for an internship with various local, national and even overseas organisations, like Cambridge University Press, Nexus Partnerships, Bloomsbury, Hachette, Hart McLeod, Lutterworth's, ProQuest and Shakespeare and Company in Paris.

Bursaries

As an offer holder for this course, you’ll have a chance to apply for one of our annual scholarships. The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers provides a scholarship of £6,000 a year, and the chance to become a Freeman of the Company, while our Cambridge University Press bursary offers a reduction of £1,200 on your tuition fees. This MA is research-inspired. It is designed to capture contemporary disciplinary debates with research-led modules informed by the staff’s current interests, publications, and collaborative projects.

History has a well-established research culture at BGU and postgraduates will be invited to join our staff at regular events, workshops, and presentations. Students will be encouraged to participate in the History Research Seminar Series, which will be scheduled to coincide with MA teaching days.

In the recent Research Excellence Framework (2014), 74% of the work submitted by History staff was judged to be of ‘international’ quality, including research that was deemed ‘world leading’ in its originality, significance and rigour.

Teaching -

Teaching is in weekly small-group lecture and seminar sessions that combine expert commentary with vibrant critical discussion. Seminars are integrated with research and presentation tasks to ensure an atmosphere of active and collaborative learning. From academic support to on-line resources, students will experience BGU’s longstanding commitment to teaching excellence and student-centred pedagogy.

Assessment -

Modules are assessed by a variety of coursework tasks intended to develop advanced academic and communication skills. Typically, this will include written essays, presentations, and specialist research tasks. Placements are assessed through the submission of a critically reflective piece of writing. The dissertation module is your opportunity to undertake a substantial, independent research project. Assessment is supported by one-to-one consultations or supervisions.

The curriculum of the course consists of surveys of modern and international contemporary art, as well as close consideration of visual arts institutions and practices, training in exhibition organization and public programs in museums and not-for-profit galleries, commissioning, writing, publishing and commercial gallery activity. The teaching combines lecture-based courses, self-initiated research, seminars, site visits, and collaborative work. It also involves the realization of a project in partnership with a national pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
The duration of the Masters program is divided as follows: seven months of lectures, lab activities, museum and gallery visits, integrated with individual study, project development and three months dedicated to the elaboration of a final Thesis Project that can be undertaken alone or in a group.
The Masters program has a very pragmatic approach, providing students with methodology and a step-by-step path that will lead to the realization of an exhibition project. For that reason its structure is divided into 3 main parts:

- AREA 1_THEORY
The first part provides students with solid introduction to the history of post-WW2 modern and contemporary art, and a critical analysis of recent trends. The history of exhibitions is analyzed in the light of museology, leading to a consideration of current curatorial strategies.

- AREA 2_SKILLS AND EXPERTISE
The second part is concerned with specific expertise and skills required to develop an efficient working practice in fields of exhibition organization and management, also placing emphasis on audience development through marketing and learning, writing – as required for publication, fundraising etc – and off-site activity. Driven by renowned professionals, this area will be relevant equally for those wishing to pursue careers either in not-for-profit or commercial art worlds, in auction houses or art fairs, commissioning the production of new art work in museums or in the public realm.

- AREA 3_PRACTICE
The third part is the realization of a curatorial project, starting from an idea to its concrete realization. They will moreover live the experience of the next 57th International Art Exhibition managed by La Biennale of Venice from a special point of view, and special week inside the main cultural institution located in the city.
