The Workplace Health and Wellbeing programme is designed for those who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in leadership on the management of contemporary workplace health and wellbeing. It is of interest to those who aspire to ensure that organisations' activities are underpinned by a strong corporate focus on employee health and wellbeing.

This course is studied on a part-time basis over two years and is designed to fit around work and domestic responsibilities. It can be studied from anywhere in the world; currently the course has students studying from as far afield as Azerbaijan and New Zealand.

The programme aims to challenge the preconceptions and practice of participants, as well as developing their knowledge, skills, competencies and ability to reflect and learn from their own professional practice. There is a strong emphasis on students' own practice, and students are encouraged to base their studies on the issues and situations they face in their own field.

The aim of the programme is to develop reflective occupational health, safety and wellbeing practitioners able to understand, develop, implement and monitor both, traditional safety concepts and contemporary health and wellbeing strategies and interventions in the context of the 21st century occupational health environment.

This programme will go through a periodic review on the 1st February 2017. As such the programme title, structure and content may change. Please check this page at that point for up-to-date information.

Course Content

For the Postgraduate Certificate, students must complete the following modules:

• Principles and Practice of Risk Assessment (10 Credits): Examine theoretical and practical approaches to risk assessment, hazard identification and risk control and evaluate their impact on the management of workplace hazards.
• Risk Perception & Communication (10 credits): Critically appraise the impact of psychological and psychosocial factors upon the perception and communication of, and response to, a range of risks and threats to health and wellbeing.
• Applied Research Methods and Design (20 credits): Develop the qualitative and quantitative research skills necessary to undertake research and evaluate interventions and day-to-day practice
• Management of Occupational Health and Wellbeing (20 Credits): Formulate appropriate control strategies and interventions to effectively manage a range of health and wellbeing issues across a variety of environments.

For the Postgraduate Diploma, students undertake the above modules, plus the following core modules:

• Individual & Organisational Change H&S (10 Credits): Appraise factors which influence organisational response to the management and performance of health, safety and wellbeing.
• Management of Safety Performance (20 Credits): Identify and appraise proactive and reactive approaches to managing, monitoring, reviewing and auditing safety performance in the workplace.
• Reflecting on Professional Development (10 Credits): Reflect on your learning, practice and experiences in order to evidence the development of your professional development. (Typically this module includes an element of work based learning and the completion of two work based projects.)
• Developing Health Safety and Wellbeing Strategies & Interventions (20 Credits): Enable students to integrate conceptual frameworks, policies and approaches to intervention through the development of a multidisciplinary intervention on an identified occupational health, safety & wellbeing issue. (Typically this module includes the analysis of live data and information from a collaborating organisation.)

To obtain the MSc, students must also complete a research project (60 credits):

• Research Project (60 credits): Design, plan and undertake a piece of independent applied research, and present the findings.

All of the above modules have been mapped against Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) Higher Level Qualification Accreditation Framework 2013.

Assessment

The programme is assessed by coursework. Examples of assessment tasks include: reports, essays, oral presentations, group work and posters. Assessment tasks encourage students to select specific topics of study that are relevant to them and their practice.

Employability & Careers

Graduate Membership of IOSH

Students who successfully complete the MSc programme will be eligible for Graduate membership of IOSH and will subsequently be able to begin the Initial Professional Development (IPD) stage of their progression to gaining Chartered status.

Improved career and /or academic progression

Students who have completed the MSc at Cardiff Metropolitan University have gained senior management and Director Level positions. Other students have gone on to undertake a PhD or lecture at university.

It aims to challenge and extend the knowledge base, skills and attitudes of those working in, or interested in the field of children, young people and family wellbeing. It critically analyses the evidence-base for such work, and examines interventions that link to positive outcomes.

The programme is offered as open learning only. It is open to home, EU and international students interested in child and adolescent wellbeing, and who want to interact with other graduates and professionals in an online research-based environment. Research highlights

The course is taught by academics with a rich track record in research and publication in the children and families and drug and alcohol fields.

The master's course has close links with the Children and Families Research Group. This group brings together researchers, MSc and PhD students, lecturers, practitioners and external researchers and speakers who have an interest in child welfare and wellbeing and who wish to develop research in this area. Members of the group also contribute to the development of national and international policy guidance.

We are also a strategic collaborator with Action for Children and Work closely with BASPCAN (the British Association for the Study and Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect) and the European Society for Prevention Research (EUSPR).

The MSc / MA Health and Wellbeing ‘Top Up’ course is designed to allow you to ‘top up’ your existing Post-graduate Diploma qualification (or equivalent) in any health, welfare or social care related subject to a full master’s qualification. This will be achieved by you producing a 60 credit independent study in one of three options.

A research dissertation.

An evidence based practice module containing two summative assessments, usually of relevance to your current workplace – which runs in October each year.

A consultancy report, usually of relevance to your current workplace.

Whichever option you choose this module will consist of an independent project designed, planned and carried out by yourself and written up in a minimum of 15,000 and a maximum of 20,000 words.

Teaching and learning

You will learn through a substantial amount of group work and discussions around the core content from the first term onwards. One of the benefits of this programme is the blend of diverse perspectives you will experience collaborating with peers from a broad skillset and age range.

When it comes to assessment, you will find a substantial amount of the assignments are practitioner focused rather than being purely essay and exam based. For example, you might be asked to write a pitch for a company, where we would expect you to write about the theoretical underpinning of what you are proposing and then present it to the client as a practitioner.

One of the benefits of this varied assessment style is that you learn to write from an academic and practitioner perspective and understand different client needs.

Modules

The MSc Organisational Psychology consists of eight taught modules, plus an applied research dissertation, which normally takes five months to complete and forms the final part of the programme.

There is a substantial amount of theoretical work in all of the modules, but you will have the opportunity to apply your learning through practical exercises, group role plays and case studies.

Full-time students complete all eight modules and the dissertation in one calendar year (from September to September). Part-time students complete the course over two years.

Dissertation
You will need to submit a dissertation as part of the programme. In the second term you will start with a research methods seminar where you will be given support to develop the necessary skills for undertaking independent research. You will choose a topic under the guidance of a project supervisor and conduct empirical research in your chosen area, which will involve gaining access, collecting and analysing data and submitting an 8-10,000-word dissertation. In the summer term, you will work full-time completing your final dissertation. Many students choose to conduct research within an organisation for their final dissertation so they can address a real-world problem. One of our current students is working with a large public health organisation to explore how employee engagement has changed since a major internal change programme; whilst another is investigating what impact shared parental leave has on men’s careers with a professional severance firm.

Career prospects

Our graduates go on to apply their learning in a range of professional settings across the public and private sector, including organisations such as Aviva, Accenture, the Ministry of Defence and the BBC.

Lucy Gallagher MSc Organisational Psychology, 2014
Whilst completing her Masters at City, Lucy worked for Assessment and Development Consultants as a Centre Administrator supporting the manager in running assessment and development centres. Soon after completing her Masters, Lucy completed a Graduate Scheme at Saville Consulting, gaining experience in the three core business areas.

Now working as a consultant at Saville Consulting, Lucy works on a number of projects including partner recruitment, assessment centre design, selection and assessment, employee development and competency framework design. She is passionate about making sure the right people are in the right roles and that individuals get the help and development they need to reach their full potential.

Tara Tapper MSc Organisational Psychology, 2008
Since graduating from City in 2008, Tara has worked in India as the Head of HR for RBS Technology Services and managed change programmes at Mischon de Reya, a law practice based in London and New York. Tara is currently working as Group HR Director at Wonga.com.

In 2008 Tara was awarded the MSc Occupational Psychology Research Prize for her research into the employee engagement challenges, barriers and biases faced by maternity returners on the 'Partner track' at a city law firm. On this programme you will consider ecological public health, the relationship of health to environment, as well as the social determinants of health and healthcare systems. By looking at current theories and concepts and through the analysis of a range of information you will develop the skills and knowledge so that on graduation you will be able to inform strategies to improve the health of communities or be well placed to continue to work towards a position of an academic researcher.

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and so the programme has been designed to give them the ability to enact meaningful change in any setting.

For example, for the Ecological Public Health module our students select a country or urban/rural location to carry out an assessment of the public health profile (demographics and burden of disease/people and place) and identify the ecological foundations for that specific public health profile. They would then create a collaborative (e.g. inter-agency, community approach) action plan focussed on health improvement in that particular area.

Topics current students have chosen include:
• Public Health interventions in New Orleans
• Health, Wellbeing and Diet in Japan
• Understanding and Improving Mental Health in Indonesia

Delivered at the Knowledge Spa located on the Royal Cornwall Hospital Site in Truro this research inspired programme will include contributions from the University of Exeter Medical School’s European Centre for Environment and Human Health (http://medicine.exeter.ac.uk/research/environmentandhumanhealth/), the Met Office, Age UK and the World Health Organisation.

Students are able to access one-to-one support should they wish to undertake an internship with a Cornish business (or even further afield). They are able to take part in the Access to Internships(http://www.exeter.ac.uk/careers/internships/access/) scheme either during the course or once their studies have finished.

The programme would suit graduates who are planning or already undertaking a career within public health, health promotion, environmental health and protection, occupational health, workplace wellbeing or social enterprise. Evidence shows that work performance is improved if employees have a positive physical and mental wellbeing. Many organisations have therefore realised that they should take a proactive approach to wellness, rather than focusing on illness and absence management. This has created a need for highly skilled health, safety and wellbeing managers.

A key component of this course is a major piece of independent work, where you will focus on a specific area of interest and develop an in-depth project.

You will study health and safety regulation and legislation, communication, management tools, risk assessment, control and mitigation for a range of workplace hazards typical in most industries and organisations. You will also examine related issues such as the impact of societal factors on health in the workplace, and the wider public health agenda.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing MSc is a new course at the University of Sunderland, and is accredited with The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). As a student on this course, you will be able to join IOSH as a student member and attend IOSH seminars offered by the North East regional group.

We strongly encourage you to take a placement as part of your degree, so that you can apply and develop your learning in a real work context. A placement enables you to augment your experience of work, and also build up a professional network. Teaching and assessment

Teaching will involve lectures, seminars, groupwork and one-to-one sessions with your personal tutor.

Staff teaching on this course are research active in the fields of: the application of occupational psychology principles to workplace health and safety, how human factors impact upon human behaviour; public health focussing on healthy agi­­­­­­­ng and behavioural change themes and epidemiology investigating the impacts of photochemical smog on respiratory health.

The teaching team also have many links with local industry and regulatory bodies. Elements of the course will be delivered by guest speakers and tutors who have a wide range of experience in the sector.

In 2008 the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies project began in order to improve the capacity of psychological therapy services for people with common mental health problems (depression and anxiety) in the UK. The psychological wellbeing practitioner role was created as part of this project in order to support the delivery of psychological therapies within a stepped care system. The stepped care system is promoted by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) which works on the principle of offering the least intrusive and most effective treatment (low intensity interventions) in the first instance and increasing the intensity of treatment as required.

Learning is through a combination of presentations, group discussion and role-play activities as well as self-directed study and supervised practice in the workplace.

Assessment is through role-play and real patient activities, an examination and practice competencies. All written academic work is marked at master’s level.

The course is assessed through coursework, verbal presentation of research, unseen examination and independent research written up as a final dissertation (15,000-20,000 words). The pass mark in each module is 50% (40% for level 3 modules), and all modules must be passed to obtain the MSc.

A distinction will be awarded for exceptional performance (broadly an overall average of 70% or more including 70% in the dissertation). A merit will be awarded where overall performance is in the range 60-69% (including 60% in the dissertation).

Additional Costs

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this postgraduate programme. Limited support is available for research-related expenses.
