The Workplace Health and Wellbeing programme is designed for those who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in leadership on the management of contemporary workplace health and wellbeing. The course has been designed to produce knowledgeable and skilled public health practitioners who are able to work with various client groups across different settings within the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Professional Code of Conduct (2008). This knowledge and skill development will be reflected in your ability to demonstrate achievement of the NMC Standards of proficiency for Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (2004). Ten key areas of public health practice and domains require a practitioner to search for health needs; stimulate an awareness of health needs; influence policies affecting health and facilitate health enhancing activities in different public health settings.

The course embraces a family/child/workplace centred public health role with individuals, families and populations, focusing on improving health and tackling health inequalities. The approach requires you to work within a dynamic socio-cultural and service provision context across traditional boundaries, networking and developing services in conjunction with service users, other professionals and voluntary workers. This involves the capacity to lead, assess, work collaboratively, evaluate public health provision, and accept responsibility and accountability for the safe, effective and efficient management of that provision.

Course detail

This course is for people who wish to register on the third part of the NMC register as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse: Health Visitor, School Nurse, or Occupational Health Nurse. The course requires effective registration on Part 1 (Nursing) or Part 2 (Midwifery) of the NMC register.

The aim of the programme is to prepare specialist community public health nursing (SCPHN) students with the knowledge, skills and critical abilities to provide leadership and innovation in community health. The wider goals are to improve population health, in particular the health of children and families, and to prevent illness. SCPHNs graduating from the programme will have the community capacity building skills to support the development of better, more accessible community based health and well being services.

Format

A range of teaching and learning methods are used including formal lectures, seminars, enquiry-based and on-line learning, project work, individual self-directed study and assignment preparation. Students are encouraged to draw on their own and colleagues' existing experience in the learning process.

Assessment

The assessment is a 2000 word reflective assignment based on a learning contract negotiated to individual needs. Practice will be undertaken to meet the NMC requirements for returning to practice within an appropriate supervised practice area in local NHS Trust. The practice placement is organised by the returnees, supported by UWE.

Modules are assessed by a range of methods including case studies, oral presentations, professional practice portfolios and written examinations.

Course overview

Evidence shows that work performance is improved if employees have a positive physical and mental wellbeing. Many organisations have therefore realised that they should take a proactive approach to wellness, rather than focusing on illness and absence management. This has created a need for highly skilled health, safety and wellbeing managers.

A key component of this course is a major piece of independent work, where you will focus on a specific area of interest and develop an in-depth project.

You will study health and safety regulation and legislation, communication, management tools, risk assessment, control and mitigation for a range of workplace hazards typical in most industries and organisations. You will also examine related issues such as the impact of societal factors on health in the workplace, and the wider public health agenda.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing MSc is a new course at the University of Sunderland, and is accredited with The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). As a student on this course, you will be able to join IOSH as a student member and attend IOSH seminars offered by the North East regional group.

We strongly encourage you to take a placement as part of your degree, so that you can apply and develop your learning in a real work context. A placement enables you to augment your experience of work, and also build up a professional network. When you graduate you will have the knowledge, skills and confidence to take on roles in health, safety and wellbeing in a wide range of public, private and regulatory organisations.

Staff teaching on this course are research active in the fields of: the application of occupational psychology principles to workplace health and safety, how human factors impact upon human behaviour; public health focussing on healthy agi­­­­­­­ng and behavioural change themes and epidemiology investigating the impacts of photochemical smog on respiratory health.

The teaching team also have many links with local industry and regulatory bodies. Elements of the course will be delivered by guest speakers and tutors who have a wide range of experience in the sector.

The Postgraduate Diploma prepares you to function as a specialist practitioner. You would normally be required to undertake the first six core modules listed below in order to achieve this. For the Postgraduate Certificate, students must complete the following modules:

• Principles and Practice of Risk Assessment (10 Credits): Examine theoretical and practical approaches to risk assessment, hazard identification and risk control and evaluate their impact on the management of workplace hazards.
• Risk Perception & Communication (10 credits): Critically appraise the impact of psychological and psychosocial factors upon the perception and communication of, and response to, a range of risks and threats to health and wellbeing.
• Applied Research Methods and Design (20 credits): Develop the qualitative and quantitative research skills necessary to undertake research and evaluate interventions and day-to-day practice
• Management of Occupational Health and Wellbeing (20 Credits): Formulate appropriate control strategies and interventions to effectively manage a range of health and wellbeing issues across a variety of environments.

For the Postgraduate Diploma, students undertake the above modules, plus the following core modules:

• Individual & Organisational Change H&S (10 Credits): Appraise factors which influence organisational response to the management and performance of health, safety and wellbeing.
• Management of Safety Performance (20 Credits): Identify and appraise proactive and reactive approaches to managing, monitoring, reviewing and auditing safety performance in the workplace.
• Reflecting on Professional Development (10 Credits): Reflect on your learning, practice and experiences in order to evidence the development of your professional development. (Typically this module includes an element of work based learning and the completion of two work based projects.)

To obtain the MSc, students must also complete a research project (60 credits):

• Research Project (60 credits): Design, plan and undertake a piece of independent applied research, and present the findings.

Assessment

On this programme you will consider ecological public health, the relationship of health to environment, as well as the social determinants of health and healthcare systems. By looking at current theories and concepts and through the analysis of a range of information you will develop the skills and knowledge so that on graduation you will be able to inform strategies to improve the health of communities or be well placed to continue to work towards a position of an academic researcher.

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds and so the programme has been designed to give them the ability to enact meaningful change in any setting.

For example, for the Ecological Public Health module our students select a country or urban/rural location to carry out an assessment of the public health profile (demographics and burden of disease/people and place) and identify the ecological foundations for that specific public health profile. They would then create a collaborative (e.g. inter-agency, community approach) action plan focussed on health improvement in that particular area.

Topics current students have chosen include:

• Understanding and Improving Mental Health in Indonesia

Delivered at the Knowledge Spa located on the Royal Cornwall Hospital Site in Truro this research inspired programme will include contributions from the University of Exeter Medical School’s European Centre for Environment and Human Health (http://medicine.exeter.ac.uk/research/environmentandhumanhealth/), the Met Office, Age UK and the World Health Organisation.

Students are able to access one-to-one support should they wish to undertake an internship with a Cornish business (or even further afield). They are able to take part in the Access to Internships(http://www.exeter.ac.uk/careers/internships/access/) scheme either during the course or once their studies have finished.

The programme would suit graduates who are planning or already undertaking a career within public health, health promotion, environmental health and protection, occupational health, workplace wellbeing or social enterprise. The programme has been developed with reference to the training requirements of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and the UK Faculty of Public Health to maximise your future employability in the discipline of environment and human health sciences.

The MSc in Health and Wellbeing is designed for people who are currently working, or wishing to work in a role which involves promoting others' health and wellbeing, either in specific settings, for specific health issues or at policy and framework level. The course aims to develop students' ability to critically analyse and interpret contemporary health and wellbeing issues, to formulate and evaluate appropriate responses, and to bring in national and international perspectives.

Using current research, students' will apply their learning to their practical work context to contribute towards the development of their workplace practice. The course will also be particularly useful for people who are involved in working with the Health and Wellbeing Boards across the country, and for people whose roles are working alongside Public Health England.

The MSc Mental Health is designed in response to recent changes in legislation, corresponding developments in mental health service delivery and the evolving socio-political influences that impact upon the mental health and wellbeing of individuals. It aims to meet the needs of stakeholders for an adaptable, reflexive and resilient workforce, and its modules focus on enhancing specialist mental health practice through the application of CPD and lifelong learning.

The MSc Mental Health has been developed for the specific workforce development needs of practitioners working at a senior or advanced level. It provides flexible options for study and is designed to support students to ‘learn and earn’ while applying their knowledge to practice. You will benefit from an exciting and challenging educational experience to which the programme team will contribute through the organisation of specialist innovative modules and practice learning.

For local social services authorities (LSSA) the programme provides the required training framework to fulfil mandatory functions in accordance with both the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) and the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (Schedule A1 of the Mental Capacity Act (amended 2007).

Format

The modules you undertake can be chosen from a range offered within the core MSc Mental Health programme or from CCCU’s wider postgraduate portfolio. Your choice of modules will reflect your learning and development needs and where relevant those of your supporting/sponsoring organisation. All modules can be undertaken on a standalone basis or as part of the full programme. Typically, modules consist of 30 hours of academic direction (lectures, seminars and 1:1 tutorials) and 170 hours of practice learning and independent study. Throughout the programme the focus of learning, teaching and assessment is on work-based and work related learning where knowledge gained is applied to the workplace and reflection and evaluation further enhances practice.

Assessment

The variety of assessments accommodates a broad range of learning styles and have been selected to match the module aims and learning outcomes to the theory/practice outcomes. Assessment activities include case studies, presentations, essays and examinations.

Where professional role development through the acquisition of specific skills and competencies is an identified outcome, such as with the Development of Advanced Skills in Mental Health Practice and the Developing Best Interests Assessor Practice Skills modules, you will be required to undertake a period of supervised and assessed practice learning.

The requirements and learning opportunities to meet the learning outcomes will be set out in a formal Practice Learning Agreement and you will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence of Professional Practice Development.

The full MSc Mental Health award is made of 180 credits. Each module carries 20 credits with the exception of the 40 or 60 credit bearing Dissertation/Project.

Students undertaking the MSc Mental Health will be experienced practitioners who will bring their existing knowledge and skills to the programme. Teaching & Assessment

The course is of one year duration for full time and two years for part-time.

The course is assessed through coursework, verbal presentation of research, unseen examination and independent research written up as a final dissertation (15,000-20,000 words). The pass mark in each module is 50% (40% for level 3 modules), and all modules must be passed to obtain the MSc.

A distinction will be awarded for exceptional performance (broadly an overall average of 70% or more including 70% in the dissertation). A merit will be awarded where overall performance is in the range 60-69% (including 60% in the dissertation).

Additional Costs

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this postgraduate programme. Limited support is available for research-related expenses.
