The LLM Common Professional Examination, also known as the Graduate Diploma in Law, is the route for non-law graduates wanting a fast-track pathway to a professional law qualification. Successful completion of the course provides you with a dual purpose qualification that completes the academic stage of legal training to progress onto the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) and an LLM (Master in Laws). This combination is rarely offered elsewhere and may be completed in one year.

If you are looking for the chance to change career direction, this course provides the same opportunities open to those who have graduated with a qualifying LLB (Hons) degree – that gives exemption from the academic stage of training for progression to the final course for qualification as a solicitor or a barrister. In addition, this course gives you the opportunity to gain a postgraduate degree in law which will enhance your employability.

The part-time course usually involves attendance on two evenings per week, although day-time attendance would be permissible but will be subject to the University’s timetabling of classes. In relation to the full-time course, class sessions are flexible and can be attended by a mix of day and evening classes.

You will experience a variety of teaching methods including framework lectures, group-led discussions and debates, workshops, oral presentations and independent research. Assessments on the course consist of coursework and examinations.

For Distance Learning Applicants

The distance learning course begins with an induction programme that includes an introduction to using the on-line learning platform – CANVAS, and to ensure that you are familiar with the University’s systems. The induction programme is designed to introduce you to techniques for the study of law such as using the law library, research methodology, and an introduction to the English Legal System and skills which provides a background on the law-making processes of England and Wales.

The distance learning mode of study provides the opportunity for students around the world to undertake this course. The course will be delivered using e-learning study materials with on-line support from academic staff. In addition, you will be able to access the electronic learning resources provided by the University’s Directorate of Academic Support (DAS). Therefore, it is essential that you have the use of a computer with ‘broadband’ internet access. You will also need to set aside time and arrange quiet study space to undertake your studies on the course.

Exemptions from undertaking the whole course

If you have studied and passed at degree level a few ‘foundation’ modules, you may apply for partial exemption from undertaking the full course programme, see reference to this in the Academic Stage Handbook. However, where exemptions are granted, so that you do not study the full course programme, you will not be eligible for the Master’s award. You will only be eligible for postgraduate credits for the modules you have successful completed.

What happens on the course?

The LLM [CPE] course consists of seven compulsory foundation modules. These are prescribed by the JASB, ensuring that you have the relevant knowledge base in each of the following areas: Constitutional and Administrative Law; Criminal Law; Equity and Trusts; European Union Law; Land Law; Law of Contract and Law of Tort.

The induction which is studied over two weeks provides a background of the English Legal System, including topics on court structure, common law and equity, the anatomy of a statute, the anatomy of a case, and civil and criminal procedure.

The LLM [Common Professional Examination] is a very popular course within the School of Law and is based on the study of the essential modules for entry into one of the legal professions.

In the recent Research Assessment Exercise (“RAE”) the School's average ranking was the joint highest ranking of all new universities within the Region with 65% of law staff ranked at an international level or above.

Mooting and other legal skills competitions provide the opportunity to experience what it is like to be a lawyer. Also, a purpose built courtroom gives you a taste of life in a real court with purpose-built legal equipment and special acoustics.

There are also regular visits to The Inns of Court, Houses of Parliament as well as career talks from local firms, police and other relevant organisations.

The Legal Practice course (LPC) aims to prepare you for practice as a trainee solicitor and to provide you with a solid foundation for subsequent practice as a solicitor.

This course, which can be studied full-time or part-time, is a key part of the vocational stage of training to become a solicitor for graduates or Members or Fellows of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives who have completed the academic stage of legal training.

The course emphasises and develops the skills which are required for a successful career in practice, and it must be successfully completed prior to the commencement of a training contract.

Why Wolverhampton?

The course is delivered through a mixture of large group sessions (where the whole student cohort is taught together), small group sessions (typically comprising 15-20 students), online video presentations and exercises, in-class role-playing and directed independent study.

The LPC is designed to give students a strong foundation for general legal practice. Therefore, equal weight is given to the core practice areas of Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice and Litigation.

Vocational Electives are provided at Stage 2 of the course. The choice of electives offered provides a balance between 'High Street' private client and “Commercial” areas of practice.

The course can be studied full-time in the day or part-time day or evening basis (with occasional Saturday attendance) to meet students’ individual needs.

Students are provided with textbooks and practice-based materials for each element of the course.

LPC students have a specially designated resources room with access to practitioner texts and reference materials. You will also have access to on-line practitioner reference materials and resources, such as precedents, statutes and legal databases.

Students are supported in their search for employment with a dedicated Careers Tutor and a number of initiatives throughout the academic year. We have strong links with both local and national firms and are engaged with the local legal community. You can apply and develop your legal knowledge and skills by volunteering as a student legal adviser in the University's acclaimed Legal Advice Centre, assisting members of the public with legal queries.

Once you have successfully completed your LPC at the University of Wolverhampton, you will be eligible to progress on to our LLM Professional Practice (top-up) degree course at a discounted course fee (£786 for the academic year 2017-18). You can commence your LLM immediately after completing your LPC.

Career path

The LPC aims to prepare you for practice as a trainee solicitor. Students who subsequently decide not to go into legal practice will have acquired skills and knowledge that have a wide application in business, commerce and banking, particularly in areas that require knowledge of the law.

This graduate entry level course is designed to equip social work students with the knowledge, skills and values necessary for qualification. Upon successful completion of the course students will have met the required levels of the Professional Capabilities Framework (PCF). They will then be able to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and ready to begin their first year in employment as a registered and qualified social worker.

The MA (Social Work) is an academic award dependent upon successful completion of a Masters level dissertation as well as demonstrating capable practice. There is an ‘exit award’ of PGDip, which allows successful students to register with the HCPC as a qualified and registered social worker. Students, who take this route, will be eligible to complete a Masters dissertation in Social Work Studies.

The specific educational aims of the course are to:

  • Develop core social work values as identified by The College of Social Work.
  • Develop a knowledge base to underpin capable and effective practice

The English qualification is accepted throughout the UK, the EU and is recognised Internationally.

Graduates may return to the University of Wolverhampton (or any Higher Education Institute) to undertake courses as part of their continuing professional development, which is a requirement to maintain social work registration with the HCPC. A revised framework for Continuing Professional Development and Post-Qualifying Awards is in development by The College of Social Work.

It is a condition of continuing HCPC registration that qualified and registered Social Workers maintain a record of CPD. There is also the opportunity for candidates to enrol on a programme of doctoral study - either a Professional Doctorate or a more conventional PhD.

Distance Learning

Due to a global, national and local focus on public health developments, the Master of Public Health award has increased in popularity over the last few years. The distance learning route allows overseas students to undertake a University of Wolverhampton degree from their own country. The course is also suitable for those unable to travel into University for on-campus courses whether this is due to child-care difficulties, travel issues or general lack of time to enter traditional modules of study.

I’m a Registered Nurse and Midwife in Nigeria. I was supported by my organisation back in Nigeria to gain a postgraduate qualification and, now I’ve completed the course, I shall be returning to take on a more senior managerial role.

Having a background in nursing, I was looking for something that was quite challenging that would help me build up my career. I chose the University of Wolverhampton because the course was perfect for me; it prepares you for a role in any health organisation.

The buildings I studied in were close together on campus, so I didn’t have to travel far between lectures. It’s a nice setting, and I was made to feel very welcome. The lectures were a bit challenging at first, but what I enjoyed most was the team spirit amongst the lecturers and other students – it allowed us to support each other through the challenges the course offered.

There were students from many different countries on the course and it was great to share knowledge. Everyone had a background in health – ranging from nursing to micro-biology and nutrition. Visiting the Learning Centre was always a pleasant experience as the librarians were always there to help out.

If I had the opportunity I would enrol again – and would definitely recommend the University of Wolverhampton to others. It allows you to grow professionally, as well as develop your personal skills.

Career path

Many of our students have chosen this course because they are already working in the health or social care arenas and they have been promoted during or immediately after the course. For example, one of our graduates has recently been advising the Department of Health on Smoking Cessation provision, following her successful completion of a dissertation on this topic. Another of our graduates is now the Dean of an NHS Trust Faculty of Education.

Other students decide on this course because they wish to move into the health arena. Past students have taken posts as health service administrators, managers and researchers. Because you can study aspects of health promotion and public health, some move into this growing area of work. This is an exciting new programme delivered by a truly world-class team of scholars. Led by Professor Gary Sheffield, it includes Professor Stephen Badsey and Dr Spencer Jones, Professor Peter Simkins, Dr John Bourne, Professor John Buckley and Dr Laura Ugolini. This is the strongest cluster of scholars specialising in the military history of the First World War to be found in any conventional UK university, and the team will be supported by a number of prestigious guest speakers. The emphasis of the programme is on the military and political history of Britain and the British Empire in the 1914-18 war.

Members of the team:

Professor Gary Sheffield is one of the UK’s highest profile scholars of the First World War. He has published extensively in the field, including Forgotten Victory: The First World War – Myths and Realities (2001)and The Chief: Douglas Haig and the British Army (2011)Sheffield regularly appears on television and radio, writes in the national press. He is President of the International Guild of Battlefield Guides and a Vice-President of the Western Front Association and is advising the government and the Army on their respective commemorative programmes.

Professor Stephen Badsey is one of the world's leading military historians of the First World War, and is a particular authority on propaganda in 1914-18. His publications include Doctrine and Reform in the British Cavalry 1880-1918 (2008) and The British Army in Battle and Its Image 1914-18 (2009). He has made over 50 media appearancesand acted as a consultant to numerous TV programmes.

Professor Peter Simkins MBE is an extremely well-respected historian with an international reputation for excellence. Formerly Senior Historian at the Imperial War Museum, he is President of the Western Front Association. His publications include the seminal Kitchener's Army: The Raising of the New Armies 1914-16 (1988) and The Somme and Beyond: The BEF on the Western Front, 1916-18 (forthcoming in 2014).

Dr Spencer Jones is one of the leading scholars of the emerging generation of British military historians. His books include From Boer War to World War: Tactical Reform of the British Army, 1902-14 (2012) and, as editor and contributor, Stemming the Tide: Officers and Leadership in the British Expeditionary Force, 1914 (2013). In 2013 he was appointed to the prestigious position of Historian of the Royal Regiment of Artillery.

What happens on the course?

Your programme of study will be based upon a Learning Contract negotiated between you and your supervising team. You will need to complete an expression of interest form indicating your topic and admission will be based upon the successful agreement of this topic and the identification of appropriate supervision. Under guidance of your principal supervisor, you will write at least three extended non-assessed assignments or produce at least three pieces of practical work leading to a final, assessed portfolio, which may include a viva voce examination.

Over the one year course, you undertake two periods of University-based learning at Walsall Campus, and you spend at least 120 days divided between two different schools across the 11-16 age range within the Secondary age phase.

Your University tutor is available to assist you throughout your training, and every effort is made to ensure you have a high-quality school placement, where you can learn from experienced teachers.

All course modules provide examples of good practice in teaching which you will reflect upon as you develop your own teaching style. You will be expected to participate actively in your own learning and development.

Teaching on the course reflects a variety of methods that will prepare you for life in the classroom including teacher-led debates, pupil-led exploration, peer-group discovery and the provision of individual targets. You will be assessed in a variety of ways including written assignments; classroom based investigation and other school-based activities and appraisal of practical teaching skills. The majority teaching sessions will be alongside trainees from the other the science routes.

Typical modules may include:

  • Observation of teaching, before undertaking ‘sheltered’ teaching activities, for example teaching parts of lessons or groups of pupils within a class

PGCE: programme structure

Starting in September and ending in June the full-time PGCE is the fastest and most condensed way for non-experienced trainees to qualify.

The course comprises of two school placements and two periods of University-based teaching September to October; January to February.

120 days (24 weeks) of the 36 week PGCE course will be spent in schools. You will have one school attachment during the autumn term and another (in a different school) in the spring/summer terms. During the second attachment a proportion of your teaching at key stage 4 will be focussed on your chosen specialist area.

We try to take your geographical location into account when placing you in schools but our first concern is to ensure that you have a high quality school placement that can provide a range of experiences. Additional training will therefore take place in partner schools other than your 'attachment' schools. This course aims to:

  • extend your comprehension of key chemical concepts particularly in the field of instrumental chemical analysis and so provide you with an in-depth understanding of specialised areas of chemistry

Why Wolverhampton?

  • Our existing chemistry-related programmes, BSc Biochemistry and BSc Pharmaceutical Science have excellent student satisfaction rates (95% respectively) and we anticipate that our new Chemistry developments will achieve similar results.
  • Our compliment of existing, experienced staff (including several research professors), will expand as the course develops. We recently moved into our new £25m “state of the art” science facility. The new laboratory facilities were accompanied by generous investment in a range of new teaching, research and consultancy equipment.
  • Our chemistry-based subjects have maintained links with several local/regional chemical companies and we’ve had many successful collaborative research and development knowledge transfer programmes (KTP’s), our most recent was independently rated as “outstanding”, the highest grading possible. We shall continue to build upon our existing and expanding capacity to develop links with local employers.

Career path

The UK’s chemical industry is one of the leading industrial contributors to the national economy and there are many opportunities to apply chemical knowledge, principles and skills to a successful career in the chemistry, pharmaceutical science, chemical engineering or other chemistry-related disciplines. “Chemistry will underpin economic growth, say industry leaders”, it was reported in the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) publication, Chemistry World, on the “Strategy for delivering chemistry-fuelled growth of the UK economy”. Currently the Chemistry-using industries contribute ~£195bn to the UK economy with approximately £10bn coming from chemical manufacturing and £9bn from pharmaceutical manufacturing. The areas of chemical manufacture, process technology, product development and application, and formulation skills are key areas of these chemical sciences. In chemicals (including pharmaceuticals) 95.6% of UK companies are SME’s employing 42% of the total workforce and account for 29% of turnover.

If you choose not to go into the chemical industry there are still extensive career opportunities in teaching and academic research.

What skills will you gain?

You will have evidenced good practical skills, be literate, numerate, have high level of IT skills and be capable of logical, scientific, critical thinking and problem solving. You will have developed a great deal of autonomous decision making and research capability and you will be able to evidence a range of professional, personal transferable skills and be well versed with the concept of continuous professional development. These skills will make you well equipped for the workplace, be it in a chemistry environment or the wider world of work in general, or for further research if you so choose.

Who accredits this course?

We are currently working with the RSC to achieve accreditation of our new BSc (Hons) Chemistry degree. This will be an on-going process over the first two years of the course, which started in September 2014, and will mean that our first cohort of graduates in July 2017 will be eligible for Associate Membership of the RSC shortly thereafter. We will look towards accreditation of our MSc courses in the foreseeable future.
