With the advent of smart, connected and autonomous vehicles on the horizon of technical advancements, the automotive industry is facing a developmental challenge. How do we develop a robust technical infrastructure to support the anticipated explosive growth in smart vehicular functions, communications systems and driverless cars? This demands a comprehensive understanding of the technology and a bottom-up approach ensuring robustness and dependability of Electronics, Communications (e.g. V-2-V, V-2-I) and Control Systems.

The strategic success of any industrial player in this area would depend on a ready availability of a skilled work-force within high level technical competencies, specifically catered for the automotive environment.

What will the course provide?

Through this MSc we aim to address the knowledge-gap in the areas of machine learning, automated control strategies, connectivity, and communication infrastructure, cyber-security protocols, emerging automotive networks and robust automotive embedded systems within the context of smart, connected and autonomous vehicles.

WMG at the University of Warwick has an established legacy of leading automotive research in collaboration with industry. Our unique experimental facilities enable academics and industry practitioners to work together and include:

You are required to pass nine modules in total as part of this Master's course.

Project

Leveraging the close partnerships that WMG has with key organisations within the automotive sector, it is envisaged that your project will have an industrial sponsor, enabling you to work in close collaboration with an industry partner. This valuable experience will further your transferrable skills development, and expand your networking opportunities and understanding in a professional research and development environment.

The project is worth 50% of the final grade, and supports you in developing research and analytical skills.

Work on your project runs concurrently with your module study.

Learning style

The taught component of the course consists of lectures, workshops, practicals, demonstrations, syndicate exercises, extended surgery time and reviews. Module leaders are experts in their fields and are supported by external speakers working in organisations at the forefront of their fields.

Assessment is through post module assignment (PMA) rather than exam and is based on the learning objectives of each module. Your PMA should take around 60 hours of work and consolidate the knowledge you have gained from the module.

After you graduate

Delivering effective cyber security in a global business environment

In 2010, the UK government announced a 650 million pound investment strategy into Cyber Security & declared that Cyber-Security had become a ‘tier 1’ priority alongside international terrorism and major national incidents. The UK is one of many governments around the world which recognize the serious nature of the threat that is emerging from the cyber-sphere. Our goal for the MSc programme is to give focus to the strategic deployment and implementation of Cyber Security within an organization. We want to develop strategic thinkers who understand the Cyber threat to an organization and its resources and are able to build and support secure systems that support the strategic growth of a business. The course covers all aspects of Cyber Security including network security, computer security and information security. Alongside this, the course focuses on the business context so that students can progress their careers more rapidly through organisations and aim very particularly at management positions.

Course Structure

The course is modular; each student takes a combination of core and elective modules. 9 modules are studied and assessed in total. Modules consist of nominally 40 hours directed tuition in the form of lectures, seminars, group work, presentations, case studies and e-learning. This is covered in a full-immersion, intensive week.

Modules are assessed by Post Module Assignment - this is typically a further 40 -60 hours of work.The taught modules account for 50% of the Master's degree. A major individual research project, submitted in the form of a dissertation accounts for the other 50%. This should take approximately 900 hours of study time. An oral examination is held upon completion.

GCHQ Certification

GCHQ, the UK government's National Technical Authority for Information Assurance, identified the shortage of cyber professionals as a concern that needed to be addressed. Part of their strategy was to identify cyber security master's courses that would "... help prospective students make better informed decisions when looking for a highly valued cyber security qualification".

At the University of Warwick, we specifically designed MSc Cyber Security Engineering to meet GCHQ's demanding requirements. MSc Cyber Security Engineering received provisional certification by GCHQ in 2015.

If you are an EU or international student, you should value GCHQ certification, just as much as any UK student. The content of the course is internationally applicable.

Course modules

CSE currently comprises eight compulsory 15-credit taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation. For 2018 entry, additional modules may be added.

Teaching style

Tutors adopt their own distinctive style within their taught weeks. Most modules are taught by more than one tutor, which, together with the wide range of guest speakers, gives real breadth of insight into any topic. The external input is especially evident in the Enterprise Cyber Security module where colleagues from IBM make a substantial contribution to the week's activities.

This degree is designed for those wishing to develop careers as leaders or managers in technology-led organisations. The MSc in Engineering Business Management focuses on key value-adding activities such as: marketing; product and process development; operations, logistics and supply chain management; and exploitation of competitive technology. The skills and techniques introduced in this course give new impetus to businesses and help individuals to get the best from themselves, their team and their company. This course is an IET Accredited Programme and can also lead to membership of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, subject to suitable project and choice of modules.

Course Structure

The course is modular - each student takes a combination of core and elective modules. 9 modules are studied and assessed in total. Modules consist of nominally 40 hours directed tuition in the form of lectures, seminars, group work, presentations, case studies and e-learning. This is covered in a full-immersion, intensive week. Modules are assessed by Post Module Assignment.

The taught modules account for 50% of the Master's degree. A major individual research project, submitted in the form of a dissertation accounts for the other 50%. The taught element of the course includes 8 x core modules and 1 x elective modules to be chosen from an extensive list.

Project

The project is worth 50% of the final grade and supports you in developing your personal research skills. For Engineering Business Management the project can be related to the management of companies in a number of different industrial sectors and can address many different aspects of business management such as operational, financial, human resource, supply chain or strategic management issues.

Accreditation

The MSc in Engineering Business Management (EBM) is currently accredited by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as fulfilling the educational requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer when presented with a CEng accredited Bachelors programme (or equivalent prior learning). Note that in all cases your MSc project must be suitably technical in nature and specific modules must be undertaken within the course. Please see our website for details and conditions.
