You will study six core modules::

People and Places in the West Midlands c. 1000-1500
Reformation, Social Change and Civil War: The West Midlands in the 16th and 17th Centuries
Transforming the Region: Economy, Society and Politics in the West Midlands in the 18th and 19th Centuries
Turmoil and Change: Economy, Society and Politics in the West Midlands in the 20th century
Sources and Research Techniques for the History of the West Midlands in the Medieval and Early Modern Periods
Sources and Research Techniques for the History of the West Midlands in the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries

You will take three modules per year, each of which is assessed by a 4,000-word essay. You will also complete a 15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, under the supervision of one of the members of the Centre, using the many archival resources available to the region.

To achieve the MA, you will need to complete all of these elements, totalling 180 credits; each module is worth 20 credits (120 in total) and the dissertation is worth 60 credits. However, if you wish to leave the course early, upon successful completion of 60 credits you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate, and for 120 credits you will receive a Postgraduate Diploma.

As part of the selection procedure, the interview panel will expect you to demonstrate your knowledge of computer science and will assess personal qualities such as the potential to relate well to secondary age students, enthusiasm, sensitivity, communication skills and robustness and resilience for teaching.

Applicants must also meet The National College for Teaching and Leadership requirements for initial teacher training, which means being medically fit and successfully completing an enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Assessment

Modules are assessed through a range of directed tasks and targeted assignments. Trainee teachers are also required to complete a profile of evidence towards the achievement of the Standards required by the National College for Teaching and Leadership for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Course Aims

It is expected that on completion of this Award the student will be a recognised Advanced Clinical Practitioner (HEWM, 2015) with an expert knowledge base, complex decision-making skills and clinical competencies for expanded autonomous scope of practice, the characteristics of which are shaped by the context in which the individual practices.

Entry Requirements

New entrants to Advanced Clinical Practice:
Also, to become an Advanced Clinical Practitioner must have:
Commitment to providing protected learning time for the trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner during the MSc and this is equivalent to:
- One day a week in University (or equivalent) reading, writing and other academic activities.
- One day a week protected time for supported clinical practice (or equivalent)

- Applicants without a first degree:
Universities have a separate policy for applicants who do not hold a first degree at 2:2 but have substantial and relevant clinical or prior study experience.

- Exisiting Practitioners:
Existing Practitioners who are currently working in an Advanced Clinical Practice role and do not have a MSc level of education have options to either complete the Masters or continue in the role and update in-line with their CPD requirements.
There are ‘Top Up’ arrangements for existing Practitioners who do not have a full Masters degree. They have the option to complete the degree and to do this they would need to be in a relevant Advanced Clinical Practice post and supported by their organisation.

- Employers:
All organisations supporting staff to undertake an Advanced Clinical Practice course will need to ensure as part of their workforce plans the role of Advanced Clinical Practitioner is embedded within their organisation structures. Once the trainee is a qualified Advanced Clinical Practitioner, there will need to be on-going support from the Trust

The Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making is assisted by linking the student with a clinical preceptor who is an expert in the student's clinical speciality. The course introduces skills, knowledge and competency in the clinical examination, ordering and interpretation of appropriate diagnostic tests and the consequent professional judgement and decision making to allow autonomous practice in a range of health care environments.

This award enables the development of higher levels of knowledge and skills at the depth and breadth appropriate to Master’s level work. By using a technology enhanced approach, the award and by its delivery, creates a practice-focused, student-centred, flexible programme that develops student capabilities to, challenge advanced clinical practice. To engage in independent evidence-based decision making thus determine creative and innovative solutions to practice issues and developing analytical and intellectual skills at Masters level.

This part time three year programme comprises of both practice and academic based learning. The clinical focus of the award is a direct result of the continuing need to develop the role of Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

The expanding clinical role is assisted by linking the student with a clinical preceptor who is an expert in the student's clinical speciality. The student will also receive support for personal and professional development from a senior clinical lead of the same profession who acts as a mentor for the duration of the award.

Course outline

This award is designed to offer you a flexible programme of learning. The programme includes 150 credits of Award core modules and 30 credits of Award option modules. The option modules provide opportunity for your development in professional studies and/or clinical care in areas that meet the learning outcomes and clinical competencies of the Award, and you will normally study modules in the following sequence when exploring these themes:

The award has three potential exit points: The award is flexible in that it allows you study modules in the PgC and PgD in any order, however you cannot be awarded a PgC or PgD until the modules for each stage have been completed.
-The postgraduate certificate (PgC) in Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making can be awarded following successful completion of PgC modules to the value of 60 level 7 credits.
-The postgraduate diploma (PgD) in Advancing Clinical Practice can be awarded following successful completion of PgC and PgD modules to the value of 120 level 7 credits or 30 level 6 credits (Independent Supplementary Prescribing ONLY) and 90 level 7 credits.
-Once you have successfully completed the Postgraduate diploma, you are eligible to register for the Masters project or dissertation. The award of Master of Science (MSc) in Advanced Clinical Practice will be awarded following successful completion of modules to the value of 30 level 6 credits and 150 level 7 credits or 180 level 7 credits.

In order to progress from one stage of an award to another (i.e. PgC to PgD, PgD to Masters), you must complete the proceeding stage although you are free to study modules can be undertaken in any order.

Employment opportunities

This award will equip you with the skills and knowledge to look for a position as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in NHS or Independent Heath Provision. However the course does not provide automatic qualification for employment in these roles as some practitioner roles may require specialist experience and knowledge outside the remit of the course content. However, it should provide a stepping stone to these positions as they occur.

This programme has been designed primarily for international students who are government officers or who have work experience in social policy areas. This programme starts from an examination of UK social policy, with opportunities to examine the experiences of, and challenges facing other countries, as well as study UK social policy in depth. It includes a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisations in the West Midlands area. Policy into Practice is also offered without a work-based placement.

This programme is part of a suite of programmes designed primarily for international students who are government officers or policy officers, researchers or practitioners in non-governmental organisations who have work experience in social policy areas. The study of Policy into Practice concerns the development and nature of government interventions aimed at ensuring the welfare needs of their populations are met, and the ways those interventions are put into effect. Starting from an examination of UK social policy, the programme widens out to examine the experience and challenges facing other countries. The programmes include the opportunity to have a work-based placement within one or more public, private or third sector organisation in the West Midlands area.

The programme introduces students to the study of Social Policy and Practice and considers current and future political, economic and demographic contexts of policy making around the world.

Specialist option in health policy

Students can now study an MA or PGDiploma in Policy into Practice with Integrated Placement (Health) which has a particular focus on heath policies and interventions. Developed in collaboration with the Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) the programmes cover UK health policy, as well as the experiences of, and challenges facing, other countries in relation to health policy and population health and wellbeing. The programme has been designed for national and local government officers, as well as officers of non-governmental organisations who are involved in health policy-making or delivering health services in countries other than the UK. Students take a combination of modules on social policy and health services management. For module options please see the course brochure. The MA includes a 20 week work-based placement in a non-clinical health setting, and the PG Diploma includes an 8 week work based placement in a non-clinical health setting.

You will also experience extensive practical experience of the major techniques, methodologies and approaches used in fire investigation. In addition you will develop your skills in critical thinking using a range of academic paradigms by undertaking an extensive research project in the field of fire investigation.

  • The delivery of the course involves a partnership between The West Midlands Fire Service, one of the leading centres of Fire Investigation in the UK and the University. Both partners have an established track record in delivering training and education with a vocational aspect in this area.
  • The Fire Investigation facility situated at the Oldbury Fire Investigation centre will allow the student a unique hands-on practical experience that is not offered by any other MSc course in the Midlands region.

What happens on the course?

Fire Science and Building Construction

This module will introduce you to the basic science that underpins the investigation of fire scenes. You will be introduced to the chemistry of combustion, including consideration of the effects of ventilation, physical properties of combustible materials and ignition sources. You will look at the ontogeny and progression of combustion events, but also the legal and health and safety aspects underpinning fire science.

Evidence Gathering at Fire Scenes

This module will cover all aspects of the practical steps needed to identify and gather evidence at Fire Scenes. Integral to this module will be an appreciation of issues of continuity and integrity and an awareness of the differences between criminal and other investigations of scenes of fire.

Fire Scene Investigation Practical

You will gain direct practical experience of undertaking a fire scene investigation at the Oldbury facility of the West Midlands Fire Service. This module will expose you to a simulated fire scene, where you will have to carry out the full investigation of documenting and recording the scene, followed by evidence identification and recovery.

Interpretation of Fire Scenes

This module will allow you to utilise the various evidence strands that are present in fire scenes to work out the cause, origin and spread of fires. You will then discuss the effects of fire and products of combustion on the human body, including human behaviour.

Managing Fire Scene Investigations and Report Writing

This module will provide an in-depth analysis of the considerations surrounding the management of the investigations of fire scenes. There will be an overview of personnel involved, their roles and contribution to the investigation. The module will also describe the preparation of written and oral testimony for courts of law. Finally the presentation of the report in oral testimony will be reviewed.

Research Methods

provides you with the necessary skills to undertake a research project in this exciting area. The module will include a project specific literature review, experimental design and project planning, an oral presentation and an introduction to statistics in investigating experimental questions.

Research Project

The research project in Fire Investigation is an integral part of the course and is intended to develop research skills in persons undertaking careers in forensic mark comparison. As well as applying the scientific approach to research coupled with statistical validation of results from the research methods module, genuine case-based research will be undertaken at the University, in one of the course partners or at a number of alternative providers.

Why Wolverhampton?

a) The delivery of the course would involve a partnership between one of the leading centres of fire investigation in the UK and the University. Both partners have an established track record in delivering training and education with a vocational aspect in this area.

b) The Oldbury Fire Investigation facility will allow the student a unique hands-on practical experience that is not offered by any other MSc course in the Midlands region.

c) There are opportunities for experienced fire investigators and forensic scene investigators to fast-track to the MSc.

Career Path

Unfortunately, fires are always going to happen. There will always be a need to investigate these as the consequences of fires are extensive damage to persons and property. The applied nature of this course means that a number of career paths are available to you. These include:

  • Crime scene investigators.
  • Fire Investigators working for Fire Services.
  • Independent Fire Investigators working for a range of insurance companies.
  • The MSc also provides suitable preparation for further research/professional study at Doctoral level leading to a PhD or Professional doctorate (DBMS).

  1. a systematic understanding of the underpinning science, technology and legal issues that informs fire investigation;

Physician Associate (formerly known as Physician Assistant) is a rapidly growing healthcare role in the UK, working alongside doctors in hospitals and in GP surgeries. Physician Associates support doctors in the diagnosis and management of patients. They are trained to perform a number of roles including: taking medical histories, performing examinations, analysing test results, and diagnosing illnesses under the direct supervision of a doctor.

The course leaders regard integration of theory and practice as fundamental to clinical learning.

- This course is two, full time, calendar years in duration, each lasting approximately 48 weeks, plus an additional month. You can expect to be studying 50+ hours per week.
- Theory is learned mostly through case/problem based learning and you will experience medicine in both hospital and community attachments.
- The rich ethnic and socio-economic diversity of the 5.5 million strong West Midlands population offers unrivalled opportunities for clinical learning, with placements seeking to optimise this.
- Right from the beginning, you will have contact with patients, as during the first term, students are placed for up to five days of clinical experience within a General Practice in either the West Midlands or beyond.
- This is followed by a fourteen-week hospital attachment in the second term, and a further few days of General Practice in the third term. Students will use the cases collected during the second term as the basis of their learning within the third term.
- The second year continues the problem-based learning approach and integrates further learning and placements in Acute and Emergency Medicine, Child Health General Practice, Mental Health, Reproductive Health and Surgery.
- Throughout the course, you will receive teaching in a variety of forms, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, group work, and bedside demonstrations.
- Simulation is fundamental to this course, using simulated patients (who will teach you communication and examination skills, including gynaecological and urological examination). Simulation aims both to prepare you for the clinical world and to train you in a safe, non-threatening environment.
- Progression exams are undertaken at the nine months mark, and again at twenty-three months into the course. Students are required to pass both sets of examinations prior to entry into the National Assessment.
- Assessment types will include Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) paper(s), Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE), Case Write-Ups, Presentations and Professional Behaviour sign-offs.

We have received significant investment in surface chemistry and analysis laboratories (£500,000), and won £2.5 million-worth of investment from Advantage West Midlands and the European Regional Development Fund to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and refurbish laboratory space for carrying out research under the heading of Advanced Materials Research.

Public History and Heritage: Theory and Practice
This module enables you to interpret the interface between the professional position and the public’s requirements, and to explore how the latter are constructed and experienced, along with the ethical issues associated with public history

Collections and Visitor Management
Heritage professions involve working with a finite resource which must be managed to ensure its long-term survival. This module attempts to familiarise you with a range of heritage and public history settings and address key concepts such as stewardship and sustainability. The module will be delivered by staff from Dudley Archives service and Black Country Living Museum at these two locations, ensuring students gain the best possible experience

Public History Placement Project
You will be placed in a group in your chosen heritage sector and tasked to complete a real project (such as cataloguing an archival acquisition, putting on a museum display, organising an educational workshop or carrying out a review of visitor experience) which will last for at least 6 months of the course

Assessment

Assessment will be through a series of theoretical and practical tasks designed in collaboration with professionals working in the heritage sector. There will be no exam element to this course.

Attendance

The course will run on one afternoon a week over 9 months, with 4 to 5 Saturday sessions. The first module and the Saturday sessions will be taught at Newman University and all other sessions will take place at Black Country Living Museum and Dudley Archives.

The Staffordshire University Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) is an integrated 3-year full time course leading to a professional qualification in Clinical Psychology. It is a collaborative venture between the University and clinical psychologists in Shropshire and Staffordshire. The course is approved by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) and accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). The curriculum is based on the HCPC Standards of Education and Training and Standards of Proficiency and the BPS Accreditation Criteria. Graduates are eligible to apply for Practitioner Psychologist Registration with the HCPC and Chartered Psychologist status with the BPS.

Our curriculum is designed to develop clinicians who can draw on a broad range of psychological models and theories to inform their clinical work and who have the confidence to use a variety of research methods appropriate to addressing clinical questions. An important strand running through the course is the impact of society and context upon psychological wellbeing, and we attempt to ensure that issues of difference and diversity are fully addressed. We encourage our trainees to be alert to the changing health needs of the population, the NHS, and the research base that informs clinical practice. We encourage trainees to be mindful of power differences within professional relationships. We value service user and carer perspectives, and the active role service users/carers can play in the planning and development of services.

Course content

The course is full-time for three years and attendance at all course components is mandatory. The length of the course cannot be reduced through the accreditation of prior learning or experience.
Trainees' time on the course is divided between academic work, research, individual study time and clinical experience. Each academic year begins with a mandatory induction block of up to six weeks, plus mandatory NHS Trust training in Year 1, to prepare trainees for safe and effective practice in their supervised clinical work.

Academic Teaching
Academic teaching consists of workshops, lectures, seminars, and online learning. It covers a broad range of topics in psychology, providing the knowledge base for practice and training in clinical, professional, therapeutic, and research skills. Teaching in Years 1 and 2 is closely linked with the competencies that are assessed on placements, whilst teaching in Year 3 focuses more on specialist skills. Teaching is provided by course staff supported by Clinical Psychologists and Service Users from the course area and beyond.

Clinical Experience
Clinical placements are mostly located in services within NHS Trusts in Shropshire and Staffordshire where clinical psychology is a strong and well-developed profession. The Clinical Director is responsible for planning placements with each trainee to offer a coherent and effective experience. Clinical placements start after induction blocks and take place in a wide range of hospitals, clinics, community centres, and independent sector agencies. In Year 1 trainees are normally placed in the same geographical area as their employer. Trainees have a degree of choice over their third year clinical experience. During each year, trainees work with up to three Main Supervisors who assume responsibility for supervising the work over time periods ranging between 3 and 12 months (typically six months), amounting to a minimum number of placement days overall. Trainees may also undertake specific pieces of work with other supervisors. Each trainee develops an Individual Learning Portfolio which is drawn up by the trainee in discussion with the Main Supervisors, the Clinical Director/Tutor and their Personal Tutor.

Research
The research component of the course encompasses research methods training (qualitative and quantitative methods) and the process of conducting clinically relevant research. Assessed research activities include critical appraisal of literature; a research proposal; a research methods examination; a service evaluation project; and a major research thesis incorporating a literature review, an empirical paper, and a summary report. Thesis papers should be of publishable standard and at least one paper must be submitted to a nominated journal. The thesis is initiated early in Year 1 and completed in the second semester of Year 3. There is considerable scope for choice of research topic and methodologies, provided that they are in line with national and/or local research priorities and with available supervision. Trainees are co-supervised by academics from Staffordshire University and local clinicians. Trainees have access to a wide range of University and NHS library and online resources to support research activity.

Other admission requirements

Experience requirements
Candidates must have a minimum of one year full-time (or part-time equivalent) practical experience of working with people in a human service setting. Applicants with experience outside traditional health/caring settings are encouraged to apply, and should clearly outline how the experience is relevant to the profession and study of clinical psychology. If necessary, candidates should include further information to this effect about their relevant work experience in the personal statement section of the application form.

Relevant examples could include the demonstration of skills in: understanding different issues for people across the life-span; understanding the impact of different social circumstances on psychological distress and wellbeing; working with a range of other professionals; experience of psychometric assessment or other forms of assessment; assisting service users to have a voice; gaining some understanding or experience of the NHS and Social Care services etc.

Clinically related research may also be considered appropriate experience, but this would need to comprise involvement in the research process that has included direct client contact, thereby demonstrating appropriate skills. Completion of a higher degree would not in itself evidence sufficient research experience. Doctoral training is clinically, emotionally and academically demanding, therefore candidates need to demonstrate aptitude for this level of work and show how they will manage the demands of training.

This award aims to:
-To produce clinicians who have a sound critical knowledge of the theoretical and research literature relating to CBT and who are able to competently undertake CBT assessments and interventions with adults with common mental health difficulties such as anxiety and depression according to relevant professional ethical frameworks.
-To contribute towards the requirements of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies for accreditation as a cognitive behavioural therapist.
-Teaching and supervision sessions take place at the Centre of Excellence in Healthcare Education Stafford and in the Learning Centre of St George’s Hospital in Stafford.

Other admission requirements

Have access to a BABCP accredited workplace supervisor who can offer regular supervision. Meet the Staffordshire University required level of proficiency in English (Level 6).

All potential trainees will be interviewed and required to undertake a written assessment before being admitted to the award. Potential trainees will need to demonstrate that they have the necessary interpersonal and academic abilities to achieve the award.
