Degree Information

Our philosophy is to base our teaching on real-world issues in facilities management (FM) at high-performing organisations in both the private and public sectors. Our students develop the ability to think critically about all facets of the FM services - maintenance, engineering, projects, catering, cleaning, security and property management, by considering engineering and management theories and concepts and their applications to FM situations in these service lines. This allows our students to use their experience to explore these applications in their current or future careers.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two optional modules (30 credits) and an original dissertation (60 credits).

A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months) is offered.

There are parallel programmes in London and Singapore and students in the two locations can meet virtually and share leading-edge perspectives on green and sustainable FM operations.

The majority of graduates are engaged at a senior level in facility management operations, consultancy or design. Some students use the MSc as a foundation for subsequent MPhil/PhD research. The programme has helped participants to improve career prospects and keep ahead of developments in this field.

You will complete a total of five units (including your dissertation) involving attendance of six or eight days for each unit. You will study several key topics covering areas of project management theory and methods, while gaining an insight into their practical application in a business context.

Here are the units you will study:

Project Environment and Planning: You will develop an understanding of the relationship between project and business management, as well as the project management environment and the factors that influence project outcomes. Strategic aspects of projects are addressed, including project selection and portfolio design. You will also learn how project managers must understand the benefits to be delivered by projects, the requirements of stakeholders and how to work within the constraints of cost, time and quality. Estimation methods and planning techniques are taught together with quality management. Approaches to the planning and control of projects that have been developed in different sectors are also covered, including agile methods and fast tracking.

Budgets and Commercial Management: This unit introduces you to raising project finance, building, monitoring and controlling project budgets and measuring Earned Value of project deliverables. It also covers the commercial aspects of procurement including tendering, contracting and the skills and practices of contract and bid negotiation, providing you with the tools and techniques for managing project budgets. The units also examines the key roles that project managers, budget managers and key project personnel play in managing project budgets.

People Management and Risk: This unit develops a critical understanding of individual, team and organisational working in order to deliver project goals successfully. It covers how individual characteristics such as personality, intelligence, ability and skills, motivation and attitudes affect individual performance. You will learn how to empower individuals and teams to achieve quality standards which enhance personal team and organisational performance, together with the development of creative and credible leadership. It also examines the key challenges in the application of risk management frameworks and models in project management, crisis management and corporate governance. Risk management strategies and the development of effective project mitigation and contingency action plans are critically evaluated.

Project Investigation and Systems Methods: This unit explores the investigation of project issues through the use of a structured research methodology and project management analysis tools to enhance the research process. Wider strategic issues are explored to place the research process into context and to illustrate how appropriate research methods can be identified for specific types of research problems. You will also look at tools for the modelling and analysis of complex problem situations (including systems thinking, soft systems methods and influence diagrams) and how these can be used to diagnose problem situations to identify relevant areas for further investigation. Project management methodologies including PRINCE2, Partnering and Programme Management as a wider context for project management research issues are examined. You will produce a research proposal that brings together the use of research methodology and project systems in identifying, justifying and investigating a research question that will feed into the research conducted in your final dissertation.

Dissertation: This unit enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of project management of your own choice. Many students choose to investigate topics which they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. The unit is structured as a research project so you can demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research on a specific project management issue and effectively communicate your findings in an appropriate manner for a Master’s degree.

Programme Assessment

The units are structured as eight teaching blocks of three days of lectures, seminars and interactive syndicate work, with periods of self-managed study between blocks. Our MSc Management and Global Supply Chain Management route is designed to prepare you for a career in global supply chain management. It begins by exploring the management of operations at a strategic level, before developing your understanding of the global supply chain and how organisations within it perform in relation to one another.

- Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship
This module provides both theoretical and prescriptive knowledge needed to deal with various managerial problems that exist in the effective and efficient utilisation of the information systems (IS) and information technologies (IT). The module places an emphasis on the small business management in the aspects of entrepreneurship, strategic plans, e-business and supply chain management.

- Research methods
The modules aims to enhance your knowledge and skills in research methodology, research ethics, planning, research design and analysis, presentation in order to undertake a large research project.

- E-business applications
On this module you be taught web site design/architecture, web site development and web-database connectivity.

- Software project management
This module develops the knowledge and skills that are required to manage IT projects. It covers the various stages in project planning, scheduling, implementation and evaluation. Issues such as leadership and human resources management in project management, risk analysis and management, monitoring and control will be discussed. Computer-based tools such as MS Project that can be used to support project management will be utilised. Factors that contribute to project success or failure will be analysed. She applies e-learning methods in her teaching, having worked on a number of JISC and EU-funded projects such as PC3 and EuroPlot. Patrick is a great believer in mobile offering new ways of doing things and crafting better user experiences.

Programme Description

In an increasingly complex and rapidly changing global business environment, the management of risk requires a broad range of skills, knowledge and experience.

The MSc Risk Management programme provides an in depth understanding of risk and their application in practice both for financial and non-financial organisations. Students will learn both theoretical and practical understanding of risk including risk measurement and modelling using computer software (e.g. Palisade Decision Tools). In addition, we subscribe to several industry linked databases (e.g. Thomson Reuters EIKON) that students can use in their study and research.

Accredited by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and the Institute of Risk Management (IRM), this programme is designed to provide you with the skills to excel in a role as a risk manager, risk and insurance manager, risk analyst or clinical risk manager within a variety of organisations and sectors.

You will develop the ability to establish risk policy and structures for business units, design and review processes for risk management, develop risk response processes including contingency and business continuity programmes.

Our programme is based on current research and publications in the field, and taught by staff who understand the key concerns of managers in both the private and public sectors.

The focus of the degree is on equipping the professional ‘risk manager’. This role neither sets strategy nor runs operations - the professional risk manager (whether in private manufacturing or service industries, local government, healthcare, or non-profit sector) facilitates the risk management process, educates, informs and motivates others to manage risk, and provides expert advice and input on the tools of modern risk management. Job titles vary (risk manager, risk and insurance manager, risk analyst, risk co-ordinator, clinical risk manager) and the emphasis varies from organisation to organisation, sector to sector.
