Specialist facilities

We are one of the largest and best resourced computer science and electronic engineering schools in the UK. Our work is supported by extensive networked computer facilities and software aids, together with a wide range of test and instrumentation equipment.
-We have six laboratories that are exclusively for computer science and electronic engineering students. Three are open 24/7, and you have free access to the labs except when there is a scheduled practical class in progress
-All computers run either Windows 7 or are dual boot with Linux
-Software includes Java, C++, Perl, MySQL, Matlab, Microsoft Office, Visual Studio, and Project
-Students have access to CAD tools and simulators for chip design (Xilinx) and computer networks (OPNET)

Advanced Mechanical Engineering looks at computational mechanics, response to materials and reliability engineering. Course Details

You will get hands-on experience in planning, customising, and maintaining state-of-the-art software systems for the needs of the AEC and FM sectors with an emphasis on complex engineering systems such as smart buildings. The course consists of four pillars:

- the acquisition of new knowledge and practical skills in selected engineering disciplines
- the acquisition of knowledge and skills in selected areas of computer science
- the application of the newly-acquired knowledge in two projects
- the development and submission of a minor research thesis.

In the first teaching period students acquire knowledge of:

Format

The course can be taken on a full-time (one year) or part-time (two year) basis with an option to complete at postgraduate diploma level. Lectures are broadcast using web-technology and can be attended either in UCC, in your home, or at your workplace. The majority of lectures are scheduled outside normal working hours. Block seminars consisting of full-day events are available once a month during academic periods. The course requires the completion of two projects, but can be combined with a work placement. A minor thesis contribution begins when all taught modules are completed successfully and involves four months of research work.

Assessment

Modules focusing on the acquisition of new knowledge are assessed by written exams (60%), in combination with continuous assessment (assignments – 40%). Modules focusing on skills-development or knowledge transfer are assessed through the submission of reports or essays in combination with presentations. Projects are usually organised in groups. They are assessed through continuous assessment (team meetings, status review meetings) and a final report complemented by a final presentation. You must pass each module (40%) and achieve an average grade of 50% across all taught modules in order to be eligible to progress with the master’s thesis.

Careers

Recent publications report that a shortage of engineers has been identified by professional bodies across the European Union. In the UK and Germany alone, it is predicted that approximately 2,500 engineering positions need to be filled on an annual basis over the next five years (2012 to 2016). It is expected that employable candidates have an excellent background in how to efficiently exploit IT tools in order to execute engineering tasks in the most efficient but also in an interdisciplinary way. This course addresses the need for interdisciplinary expertise and skills in engineering, energy management and computer science.

Students learn how to formulate requirements for a business system and are given an underpinning in the nature of software development and its inherent complexity. The programme also covers system modelling and user interface and database design. Students learn to develop a system from determining its requirements and graphic user interface to database implementation.

This programme is of particular interest to those with a first degree in business or with business experience. Students are given an understanding of the information technologies upon which e-commerce is built and how these technologies provide us with new ways of organising and managing business. Years three and four*

During your final two years you will build on all the knowledge you have acquired enabling you to analyse, design and manage civil engineering systems in an integrated manner. You will develop practical proposals for complex civil engineering problems in a simulated professional organisation. You will also complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice and a design project, which covers the practical application of knowledge and techniques in the identification, design and management of a simulated major construction project.

Programme Description

Accredited by the Energy Institute, this Masters programme aims to enable graduates to qualify for entry into the profession of electrical and electronic engineering with a bias towards energy engineering and renewable technologies.

In addition to the knowledge and understanding of electrical and electronic engineering there will be an integrated understanding of power systems, instrumentation systems, telecommunications systems and technologies, and business, reinforced with personal and inter-personal skills.

Programme Description

The MSc in Mechanical Engineering programme offers two specialist two study options: Design and Manufacture. These options share a number of common modules that directly reflect the activities of a professional mechanical engineer. The development of these Masters options is in direct response to the specification of benchmark requirements for professional engineering competence by the UK’s Engineering Council (UK-SPEC).

Mechanical engineers have traditionally been not only specialists, but also generalists, who have the breadth of expertise necessary for operation as project managers, leaders and innovators. In addition to advancing the core knowledge base of the discipline in your selected option, the programme will provide the necessary and continuing development of appropriate inter-personal skills at this level to enable management of resources and planning objectives.

In the School of Engineering and Built Environment, the area of mechanical engineering has very strong industrial links through its industrial advisory board, undergraduate placement scheme and its highly successful part-time undergraduate programmes which all contribute to a highly successful MSc programme.

The MSc in Mechanical Engineering has very strong industrial links through its industry advisory board. The school participates in many research activities within the area of mechanical engineering. This includes; advanced materials and manufacturing processes, finite element analysts, computer-aided design and manufacture and machine condition monitoring.

Assessment

The taught modules are either assessed by coursework only or a combination of coursework and examination. In the later case the final mark is determined by weighted average of the two elements. The MSc project is assessed by project reports, practical operation and an electronic presentation.

Career Opportunities

There are opportunities for graduates in the areas of mechanical design engineering, project engineering, manufacturing engineering or engineering sales. Graduates have found employment in the oil and gas industry, defence, computer-aided engineering and building services.

The programme may also form a part of CPD for engineers working towards chartership.
