This fully online programme offers two specialised exit awards; the pathway you choose will depend on your own specific background and interests:

MSc Web Technologies

If your knowledge and experience of computing are already beyond that of an end-user and you wish to gain enhanced web technologies skills, then this pathway is for you. You will explore cutting-edge technologies and gain a solid grounding in programming and software development.

MSc Web Technologies with Management

This pathway, while primarily having a technological focus, will explore key aspects of business and management particularly relevant in an international environment. You will receive a thorough grounding in core management principles, practices and techniques strongly contextualised to web-based applications.

Both pathways will help you develop and build on your specific technical expertise, and gain practical, analytical, and highly transferable skills sought after by employers.

Funding

From 2017, eligible Scotland domiciled students studying part-time who meet the residency eligibility can apply for a for a tuition fee loan up to £2,750 per year from the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS).

The Web is, on the one hand, a network of interlinked computers, protocols, and software and, on the other hand, a socio-cultural phenomenon that influences law, the media, business, science, etc. To shape and work with the current and future forms of the Web, we need to understand its underlying design principles and concepts, relevant issues and techniques, and how these interact and influence each other. The fast changing nature of the Web means that such a deep understanding is essential to understand the latest developments and their potential.

The Advanced Web Technologies pathway is centred around a core theme of the same name, Advanced Web Technologies, and combines it with a choice of closely related yet complimentary themes, including Software Engineering 1 & 2, Making Sense of Complex Data, and Learning from Data. Students following this theme will gain an understanding and insight into the technologies that deliver the Web as we see it today. The topics covered include underlying languages and standards used to represent information on the web; techniques for understanding and managing data and information in a web context; and techniques and technology used to design and deliver web infrastructure.

Teaching and learning

Computational thinking is becoming increasingly pervasive and is informing our understanding of phenomena across a range of areas; from engineering and physical sciences, to business and society. This is reflected in the way the Manchester course is taught, with students able to choose from an extremely broad range of units that not only cover core computer science topics, but that draw on our interdisciplinary research strengths in areas such as Medical and Health Sciences, Life Sciences and Humanities.

Coursework and assessment

In addition, students of this pathway are ideally placed to work in positions requiring an understanding of modern Wed infrastructure, ranging from the obvious Web developers and system providers to basically all companies employing or developing Web technologies.

We maintain close relationships with potential employers and run various activities throughout the year, including career fairs, guest lectures, and projects run jointly with partners from industry. The Computer Science Information Security Centre

The Computer Science Information Security Center (ISC) recognizes that no computer science graduate should be without information security knowledge. Toward this end, the Computer Science Department has introduced Information Security content such as computer and network security across the undergraduate and graduate curricula.

The curricula set forth by the ISC has been certified by the NSA to meet the National Training Standards for Information Systems Security Professionals (4011) and Systems Administrators (4013).

COURSE SUMMARY

This course is your opportunity to specialise in the development of web-based software systems that use databases. During your time with us, you will gain a critical awareness of the methodologies, tools and techniques used for the development of web-based computer systems and an advanced understanding of the techniques used for the development, evaluation and testing of databases.

The course also develops an awareness of the latest developments in the field of advanced databases, data mining and data warehousing. You will also gain substantial knowledge and skills in the deployment of SAS business intelligence software leading towards SAS data miner accreditation, and learn what the Semantic Web and Linked Data are, together with what these technologies enable.

COURSE DETAILS

This course covers a very comprehensive range of topics split in to four large modules worth 30 credits each plus the MSc Project. External speakers from blue-chip and local companies will give seminars to complement your learning, that will be real-world case studies related to the subjects you are studying in your modules. These are designed to improve the breadth of your learning and often lead to ideas that you can develop for your MSc Project.

TEACHING

Teaching on this course takes the form of lectures, individual and group class work, topical class discussions and critical case study evaluation.

You will gain hands-on lab experience of using and setting up databases and web-based systems. What’s more, tutorials will give you practice in solving the theoretical and design problems associated with these systems.

EMPLOYABILITY

With this qualification, you’ll be equipped as web/database designer and programmer, data analytics and miner among other roles. Your experience will be in high demand across all industrial and commercial sectors.

The CNTR undertakes both pure and applied research in the general field of telecommunications and computer networking including computer networking technologies, wireless systems, networked multimedia applications, quality of service, mobile networking, intelligent buildings, context driven information systems and communication protocols. Much of this work is funded through research grants and supported by industry. In addition, members of the group are actively involved in a range of public engagement courses which aim to raise the awareness of these subjects for the general public and in schools.

Content

The world leading MA Publishing course at London College of Communication allows you to hit the ground running. It combines theoretical and practice-based approaches to teaching and learning so you can prepare for future employment, obtaining a strategic, practical and integrated command of publishing within digital and multi-platform publishing and international contexts.

The course offers the choice of two teaching and learning specialisms: book multi-platform publishing or magazine multi-platform publishing. It is aimed at people who are aiming to advance their careers to management level within the global publishing industry. Graduates who have completed our postgraduate publishing courses since 1969 can be found throughout the world in senior positions within publishing and communications practice.

The course design and curriculum takes an integrated multiplatform stance. Digital applications are covered throughout your time at the College, across units within either chosen learning specialism. The course is led by specialist staff and enables you to take the lead in the management and production of creative content for a range of audiences via different platforms (web, digital, mobile tablets and devices and print).

Throughout the course there is an emphasis on group work, practical publishing projects and engagement with industry through leading guest speakers, visits and placements.

Our unique resources will allow you to realise the production and publishing of actual books, magazines, websites or conference events when applying publishing and project management methods in Phase two.

You will also develop the necessary research techniques to undertake a major research study or dissertation and you will complete the study of two electives. New perspectives on publishing are gained from visiting another country for one week as part of the international residential summer school for MA students.

The MSc in Data Science will provide you with the technical and practical skills to analyse the big data that is the key to success in future business, digital media and science.

The rate at which we are able to create data is rapidly accelerating. According to IBM, globally, we currently produce over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data a day. This ranges from biomedical data to social media activity and climate monitoring to retail transactions. These enormous quantities of data hold the keys to success across many domains from business and marketing to treating cancer or mitigating climate change.

The pace at which we produce data is rapidly outstripping our ability to analyse and use it. Science and industry are crying out for a new generation of data scientists who combine the statistical skills of data analysis and the computational skills needed to carry out this analysis on a vast scale.

The MSc in Data Science provides you with these skills. 

Studying this Masters, you will learn the mathematical foundations of statistics, data mining and machine learning, and apply these to practical, real world data.

As well as these statistical skills, you will learn the computational techniques needed to efficiently analyse very large data sets. COURSE OVERVIEW

Creative Producing for Digital Platforms Diploma teaches you the skills to build amazing experiences that audiences love, around films and television programmes online. We want to get you pitching ideas for game-changing formats that will be a hit on both TV and YouTube, creating content for new platforms from Snapchat to Facebook Live and inventing new ways to play and experience the world through VR, augmented reality and apps.

The film and television industry – along with the wider creative industries and the independent arts sector - needs people who understand what makes good digital content, how people behave online, and who have interactive, transmedia and digital production skills in order to maximise the potential of films, television programmes and creative content across new platforms. As audiences turn into users, players and creators, film and tv production and games companies need people who can maximise their presence online. This means you'll not only be involved in the production of content, you'll also be designing new forms of media, and understanding how those forms fit their market and find their audience.

Students will be taught by leading industry tutors responsible for some of the UK’s most cutting edge channels including BBC Three, All4, Nowness and Vice; and multi-platform projects like Got to Dance, The Voice, X Factor, Humans, Utopia, Misfits, Big Brother and Embarrassing Bodies.

Understanding the relationship between brain, cognition and behaviour is one of the biggest challenges the scientific community is currently working on. Computational cognitive neuroscience is a young and exciting discipline that tackles these long-standing research questions by integrating computer modelling with experimental research.

This Masters programme will foster a new generation of scientists who will be trained in both neuro-computational modelling as well as cognitive neuroscience. Its core topics include:

  • Creating computational/mathematical models of neurons, circuits and cognitive functions
  • The fundamentals of cognitive neuroscience (brain mechanisms and structures underlying cognition and behaviour)
  • Advanced data analysis and neuroimaging techniques

Leeds Trinity University was the first UK institution to introduce a postgraduate programme in Broadcast (Radio and Television) Journalism and the Diploma is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC). Graduate Destinations

The Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism is a highly vocational, calendar year programme which prepares trainees for roles as journalists in a multi-platform environment.

Our alumni are strongly represented in the BBC, commercial radio and television, and newspaper and magazine newsrooms across Yorkshire and the rest of the country.

The course provides a thorough grounding in the techniques of broadcast news, writing for newspapers and magazines, and website production. Trainees work in dedicated newsrooms and studios with all trainees taking roles of responsibility as editors, producers or presenters.

Trainees who follow the broadcast pathway produce Leeds Today, a regional TV news programme that showcases television skills. They also spend a month on air with Bradford Community Broadcasting during which bulletins are produced in real time against deadlines. Trainees following the Print and Magazine pathways produce the North Leeds Newspaper and MORE magazine. Trainees on all pathways are also expected to produce online video, audio and written material for the course’s main news website.

The Broadcast pathways are accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) while the Print and Magazine pathways have National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCJT) accreditation.

Structure

The following five modules make up the diploma:

- News Skills – an intensive, practical module providing the multi-media skills needed in any newsroom, regardless of platform and including shorthand.
- Law, Ethics and Regulation – the knowledge required to be legally safe and ethical journalists, and to follow regulatory codes.
- Live Production – Producing real packages in real time for Yorkshire Voice and the BCB radio.
- Public Affairs – where public affairs embraces British Central and Local Government.
- Professional Work Placement – all trainees must complete at least four weeks of placement in a professional newsroom environment.

The MA in Journalism consists of one module which trainees may register for up to two years after completion of the Diploma.

Research Methodologies and Journalism Research Project – culminates in the production of a supervised research dissertation.

Assessment – Trainees must attend a four-day introduction session in January and submit their research proposal by Easter. Trainees have 12 months to complete their thesis.
