You’ll work both individually and in teams simulating the real work environment to create commercial websites that apply theories of user-centred design, usability, information architecture, quality assurance testing and responsive design. Project management and presentation skills are key components of the program. The Web is, on the one hand, a network of interlinked computers, protocols, and software and, on the other hand, a socio-cultural phenomenon that influences law, the media, business, science, etc. To shape and work with the current and future forms of the Web, we need to understand its underlying design principles and concepts, relevant issues and techniques, and how these interact and influence each other. The fast changing nature of the Web means that such a deep understanding is essential to understand the latest developments and their potential.

The Advanced Web Technologies pathway is centred around a core theme of the same name, Advanced Web Technologies, and combines it with a choice of closely related yet complimentary themes, including Software Engineering 1 & 2, Making Sense of Complex Data, and Learning from Data. Students following this theme will gain an understanding and insight into the technologies that deliver the Web as we see it today. The topics covered include underlying languages and standards used to represent information on the web; techniques for understanding and managing data and information in a web context; and techniques and technology used to design and deliver web infrastructure.

The world leading MA Publishing course at London College of Communication allows you to hit the ground running. The course offers the choice of two teaching and learning specialisms: book multi-platform publishing or magazine multi-platform publishing. The course provides a thorough grounding in the techniques of broadcast news, writing for newspapers and magazines, and website production. Trainees work in dedicated newsrooms and studios with all trainees taking roles of responsibility as editors, producers or presenters.

Trainees who follow the broadcast pathway produce Leeds Today, a regional TV news programme that showcases television skills. They also spend a month on air with Bradford Community Broadcasting during which bulletins are produced in real time against deadlines. Trainees following the Print and Magazine pathways produce the North Leeds Newspaper and MORE magazine. Trainees on all pathways are also expected to produce online video, audio and written material for the course’s main news website.

The Broadcast pathways are accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC) while the Print and Magazine pathways have National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCJT) accreditation.

Structure

The following five modules make up the diploma:

- News Skills – an intensive, practical module providing the multi-media skills needed in any newsroom, regardless of platform and including shorthand.
- Law, Ethics and Regulation – the knowledge required to be legally safe and ethical journalists, and to follow regulatory codes.

Students learn how to formulate requirements for a business system and are given an underpinning in the nature of software development and its inherent complexity. The programme also covers system modelling and user interface and database design. Students learn to develop a system from determining its requirements and graphic user interface to database implementation.

This programme is of particular interest to those with a first degree in business or with business experience. Students are given an understanding of the information technologies upon which e-commerce is built and how these technologies provide us with new ways of organising and managing business. How the course is taught

You'll be taught in small groups, through individual and team tutorials, seminars and workshops, supported by lectures from key figures in advertising and related media. The course replicates the experience of working in a typical full-service agency and your project work will be delivered within that context. As well as working individually, you'll work in copywriter/art director pairs and groups to strengthen your communication and negotiation skills. Our Virtual Learning Environment provides information to assist you with research and project work.

Course outline

This is a one-year, full-time course delivered over 45 weeks and divided into three 15-week study blocks:

- Study Blocks 1 & 2

Study Block 1 focuses on strategic thinking as the first step in fulfilling clients' briefs. If your specialism is art direction, you'll learn vital layout and typography skills, as well as developing your appreciation of photography, film, illustration and fine art, and their application to advertising. For copywriters, a range of practical projects will further your writing skills, helping you write in a clear, lively and visual style to stimulate your audience.

During London Study Week, we visit a number of major advertising agencies (see Building professional experience).

- Study Block 3

In Study Block 3, you'll produce a portfolio that will help your transition into this competitive industry. Working with a partner – copywriter or art director – your portfolio can include live projects negotiated with agencies and clients, supported and advised by the course team.

The course's practical elements are substantiated by theoretical studies in Visual Culture & Communication, where you'll research and analyse advertising within changing cultural contexts. The Applied Technology unit gives you hands-on IT training, including using software packages like InDesign, Photoshop, imaging, file conversion, typography and web development.
