Programme Description

The MSc in Cloud Computing equips students with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to become a practitioner in this rapidly expanding area of computing.

Worldwide opinion in the computing industry is that this decade will be dominated by advances in the architectures and technologies that deliver Cloud Computing. Cloud Computing platforms are rapidly becoming the preferred route for the development of powerful and expandable IT infrastructures for today’s businesses.

The MSc Cloud Computing programme equips you with the skills necessary to fully understand the world of cloud computing and associated aspects such as cloud security and cloud software engineering. This course has been designed to enable graduates with a good degree to put their intellectual skills, research abilities and communication skills to work as producers in web and digital media organisations. An active engagement with new technologies and an enthusiasm for learning how to apply them are essential. The course provides the necessary design, technology, management and business knowledge.

Professional accreditation
Accreditation by the British Computer Society is being sought.

The course has been developed with regard to the Skillset (Sector Skills Council for the Audio Visual Industries) National Occupational Standards for Interactive Media.

Course structure
For full-time students the academic year is divided into three 15-week semesters. The taught element of the course is delivered during the first two semesters. Modules involve approximately 20 per cent classroom teaching and 80 per cent individual or group work. A full-time student is expected to put in 40 hours effort per week. The major project occupies the third semester.

Part-time students study alongside full-timers with a minimum attendance of one half day per week (depending on the number of modules taken).

At the end of the taught element there is the possibility of a placement with a digital media company for the major project module. This puts real experience on your CV as you consolidate your expertise.


Areas of study
The course teaches interaction and web interface design together with management skills. Business and specialist interests can be pursued through your choice of optional modules.

It ends with a major project allowing you to integrate your new knowledge and skills to make a substantial portfolio piece. This can be done on placement with an appropriate company and support is available to set this up.

Brighton is a major centre for web and digital media with nationally and internationally significant companies and a large number of smaller agencies and start-ups. Networking is good and you will have plenty of opportunities to engage with practitioners.

Programme Description

With a global shortfall in networking specialists, the MSc Advanced Computer Networking programme, accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), provides you with the knowledge needed to succeed in the area of advanced computer networking. Focusing on both theoretical and practical skills, it covers network design, implementation and administration.

Students will be taught networking technologies at a professional level together with their practical implementation and troubleshooting methods. You will develop a working knowledge in a wide range of routing and switching technologies used in modern enterprise networks.

The programme also offers you the opportunity to develop the hands-on Cisco configuration skills which are valued by employers in the industry. Graduates from this programme will be able to make appropriate design decisions based on complex customer requirements involving multiple technologies, implement them, and present them to clients in a professional manner.

The programme provides the skills required for professional network engineering, network design and network operations centre (NOC) roles.

Accreditation

Accredited by the BCS, the professional body for IT within the UK and a Chartered Engineering Institute. The BCS develop and maintain standards in educational qualifications that provide an appropriate foundation for those who wish to follow a career in computing or information systems. The programme is recognised as a further learning element for the Chartered IT Professional (CITP), the BCS’s own chartered qualification and, additionally, as meeting the academic qualifications required for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). Teaching, learning and assessment -

With few formal lectures, most units are taught in small class-based sessions, usually in IT labs.

For the research and development project you will be assigned a project tutor, who will advise and support you.

Assessment -

The course is assessed through a mixture of coursework assignments, group work, videos, presentations, a project research paper and a final poster presentation.

Course content

The course addresses new technologies, and advanced theories and techniques, along with their application, implementation and integration with legacy systems. You will analyse new demands and the application of new technologies in the management of data and information resources, and examine emerging technologies shaping the way data is now processed, accessed, retrieved, structured and modelled.

Embedded into the course are these themes that will help you to develop skills in the use and application of specific area in the database discipline. One theme is related to database administration and the ability to deliver and administer web-enabled database solutions. A second theme is related to database application development, and the ability to deliver web-enabled information systems solutions. The third theme focuses on the role of data architect, and the skills and knowledge needed to organise and design data and manage projects in a way that harnesses potential emerging technologies.

Teaching methods include lectures, student-led activity and smaller, instructor-led groups. You are encouraged to gain greater understanding of topics through practical activity and the use of scaled down versions of real life scenarios. Who is it for?

This course is for people who share our ethos of wanting to design technology that meets user needs - interactive systems that are useful, easy-to-use and engaging. It is for people who get frustrated when they interact with unnecessarily complicated Websites, mobile apps or other interactive systems and think 'I want to be able to improve this.' It is for people that want to design technology based on an understanding of users' needs and to ensure that the products they and others design meet those needs. We welcome students who share this user-centred ethos.

Objectives

This course will equip you with the latest academic research, theories and techniques in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience (UX), usability and Interaction Design and encourages you to think about design in new ways - recognising that there are many 'right' ways to design interactive systems.

You will gain a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge, along with the necessary skills and experience to create engaging user experiences. You will study modules that cover the entire user-centred design and evaluation process; from understanding user needs, to designing interactive systems that meet those needs, to evaluating the usability of those (and existing systems) through user research.

Placements

You will have the option to undertake a six month UX internship, after the taught part of the course has finished.

All internships are paid and provide valuable work experience, enhancing employability. As an internship student you can apply the HCI/UX knowledge and skills you have developed on the course in real-world projects and build a UX work portfolio. This supports you in standing out in the job market. You will also get the opportunity to conduct your independent research project on a topic of interest to both you and the internship company. Academic facilities

You will benefit from the use of the City Interaction Lab - a combined commercial and research lab, where we have undertaken UX consultancy for prestigious companies including Virgin Atlantic. The lab is fitted with the latest technologies including a usability testing suite, mobile testing station, eye-tracker, interactive tabletop, brain interaction technology, 3D printer and more. We employ student consultants on some projects, providing the opportunity to work on real client projects.

Teaching and learning

The course is delivered by distinguished academics from City University London's Centre for HCI Design, who all have a passion for user-centred design. Industry professionals also participate in teaching and learning - by giving guest lectures, running practitioner tutorials and even by providing feedback on students' design outputs and input into module content, ensuring that students learn the knowledge and skills most valued by industry.

Assessment

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities and interactive workshops and tutorials. It is assessed in a variety of ways, including:
-Examinations (which focus on applying HCI theory in realistic situations).
-Coursework (which range from written reports and essays, to posters, presentations and design documentation - e.g. wireframe prototypes). A range of both group and individual courseworks are set during the course. Group courseworks are often centred around realistic design projects.
-Independent research project (dissertation). The independent project allows students to conduct original research on an HCI topic of their choice.
-Each of these account for around one-third of the total course assessment. However, the exact balance varies according to the chosen elective module.

Modules

You will study seven core modules and one elective module that cover the entire user-centred design and evaluation process. Modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities and interactive workshops and tutorials. These include sessions delivered by guest lecturers from industry. Full-time students spend eight hours/week in lectures and four hours/week in seminars/tutorials. Part-time students spend half this time in classes. Overall workload is around 36 hours/week for full-time and 18 hours/week for part-time students.

You will also undertake an independent Research Project, for which our module on Research Methods and Professional Issues will prepare you.

A series of optional, but recommended, practitioner tutorials supplement the taught modules. These include talks, workshops and field trips. Previous tutorials have featured HCI/UX practitioners from prestigious companies including Foolproof, Futureheads and eBay.

We're taking 3D visualisation beyond its existing boundaries. Traditionally recognised as exclusive to the games entertainment industry, we'll also give you the expertise to use 3D visualisation in a variety of other sectors around the world.

We've created this course so that busy professionals can benefit from developing interactive 3D visualisation skills in the space of just a few months. You might be an architect, product designer, web developer, engineer, or games designer, working behind a drawing board or in the studio.

We're dedicated to ensuring our course is relevant to your job - that's why we provide you with a learning environment that allows you to adapt and develop projects you are already working on in your current role.

You could be creating an interactive 3D visualisation of a building enabling viewers to walk through; developing a virtual product to showcase on the internet; building characters for an interactive game; or creating 3D analysis to help show complex business data. The possibilities are endless.

Whether it's helping archaeologists visualise and bring a site to life, assisting councils on new buildings and developments, or allowing surgeons to explain an operation to a patient, 3D visualisation and its potential for interaction is now a powerful tool across many industries.

You'll build your skills in 3D modelling - both constructional and organic - lighting, camera techniques, rendering, material application, animation and editing, learning how to adapt existing software and understand how different software interact with each other.

You'll also meet like-minded students from different industries, allowing you to debate current issues and realise the potential for 3D visualisation and interactive environments skills across many sectors. You'll join students from different professional environments, share ideas and benefit from alternative insights.

Mature Applicants

Our University welcomes applications from mature applicants who demonstrate academic potential. We usually require some evidence of recent academic study, for example completion of an access course, however recent relevant work experience may also be considered. Please note that for some of our professional courses all applicants will need to meet the specified entry criteria and in these cases work experience cannot be considered in lieu.

Please note that all applicants to our University are required to meet our standard English language requirement of GCSE grade C or equivalent, variations to this will be listed on the individual course entry requirements.
