This module provides analytical and practical coverage of cloud computing and web services. It focuses on the technology, frameworks and associated standards: cloud models, cloud platforms and scalability. It also provides coverage of current web service technology and data transport representations, and integrated cloud and web service application development. Current examples from industry technology are used throughout.

Big Data Landscape

This module covers the process of managing Big Data throughout its lifecycle, from requirements through retirement. The lifecycle crosses different application systems, databases and storage media. Students will gain an understanding of the full Big Data value chain. They will be able to analyse the challenges and opportunities associated with the different stages that Big Data passes through.

Data Analytics

This module covers the basic concepts of statistics needed to understand the critical concepts of data mining, machine learning and predictive analytics used in the visualisation and analysis of data, particularly Big data. Students will gain an understanding of data preparation, the process models used in analytics, the algorithms and their requirements, the implementation of these algorithms using current technologies, and their applicability to different types of scenario. They will also gain advanced practical skills in the design, implementation and evaluation of analytical solutions to problems involving Big Data.

Big Data Platforms

This module covers the platforms that support data storage, processing and analytics in Big Data scenarios. It focuses on highly scalable platforms that provide operational capabilities for real-time, interactive processing and on platforms that provide analytical capabilities for retrospective, complex analysis. Students will gain an advanced understanding of the principles on which these platforms are based, and their strengths, weaknesses and applicability to different types of scenario. Internet of Things

This module provides fundamental and practical coverage of the set of converging technologies known as the Internet of Things (IoT). It focuses on representative IoT applications, technologies, frameworks and associated standards that support and underpin IoT applications, such as sensor networks, messaging protocols, security, data storage, analytics, services and human interaction. The module provides in-depth practical coverage of representative IoT implementation frameworks including cloud-based service delivery models.

IT Professional Issues and Project Methods

This module seeks to develop understanding and practical skills in advanced project methods which are inline with industry regulations, standards and practices and are applicable to complex IT projects. Study is undertaken in an integrated fashion to ensure that the professional frameworks within which such projects are developed, deployed and managed are fully understood.

Masters Dissertation

Students will investigate a topical or emerging theme in Cloud Computing or related technologies. The dissertation acts as a vehicle for extending the knowledge and understanding of the student and the technical community in some specialist technical area. It serves through its length, complexity and rigour as a suitable vehicle for extending students' range of personal, interpersonal and communication skills. In addition it serves to develop and extend a range of high-level thinking skills, including analysing and synthesising skills and affords the opportunity for the student to demonstrate initiative and creativity in a major piece of technical work.

Work placements

Students will be made aware of placement opportunities provided by our industry partners. Typically a placement would be undertaken after graduating from the MSc programme but opportunities can sometimes be made available for students to undertake their MSc Dissertation in partnership with a commercial company.

This is a conversion course aimed at graduates with a first degree in a non-computing discipline who want to gain employment in the lucrative IT industry.

You begin by studying key computing topics including

  • introduction to databases and big data
  • computer programming and web development
  • introduction to technology and computer hardware
  • IT project management and modern development methods

These modules provide the background knowledge you need to develop more advanced skills later in the course. They allow you to become familiar with the major technologies and concepts that underpin the modern computing industry.

Your learning at this stage has a practical focus and you are encouraged to take part in technical development work.

You go on to study a specialist topic in more depth with the choice of • databases • big data • web and cloud technologies. These areas are very current within the computing industry and in high demand of qualified IT personnel.

You then take an industrial expertise module where you have the opportunity to engage in live projects for real clients. This gives you experience working in a team to identify client needs, plan projects and produce working solutions.

You may be able to study abroad as part of the Erasmus programme.

During the final part of the course you complete an individual project which is the equivalent of a dissertation. To prepare you for this project, you first take a module on research skills and principles. You gain an understanding of research methods and learn how to manage a project of this kind.

Interactive Media Practice combines a wide range of digital creative technologies primarily combining digital literacies design, technology and interaction, through user centred design for commercial outputs to an industry standard.

IT Professional Issues and Project Methods

This module seeks to develop understanding and practical skills in advanced project methods which are inline with industry regulations, standards and practices and are applicable to complex IT projects. Study is undertaken in an integrated fashion to ensure that the professional frameworks within which such projects are developed, deployed and managed are fully understood.

Masters Dissertation

Students will investigate a topical or emerging theme in Cloud Computing or related technologies. The dissertation acts as a vehicle for extending the knowledge and understanding of the student and the technical community in some specialist technical area. It serves through its length, complexity and rigour as a suitable vehicle for extending students' range of personal, interpersonal and communication skills. In addition it serves to develop and extend a range of high-level thinking skills, including analysing and synthesising skills and affords the opportunity for the student to demonstrate initiative and creativity in a major piece of technical work.

Students will be made aware of placement opportunities provided by our industry partners. Typically a placement would be undertaken after graduating from the MSc programme but opportunities can sometimes be made available for students to undertake their MSc Dissertation in partnership with a commercial company.

This course provides students with advanced knowledge, industry-valued skills and new design perspectives, empowering them to succeed in a User Experience (UX) career.

Who is it for?

This course is for people who share our ethos of wanting to design technology that meets user needs - interactive systems that are useful, easy-to-use and engaging. It is for people who get frustrated when they interact with unnecessarily complicated Websites, mobile apps or other interactive systems and think 'I want to be able to improve this.' It is for people that want to design technology based on an understanding of users' needs and to ensure that the products they and others design meet those needs. We welcome students who share this user-centred ethos.

Objectives

This course will equip you with the latest academic research, theories and techniques in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience (UX), usability and Interaction Design and encourages you to think about design in new ways - recognising that there are many 'right' ways to design interactive systems.

You will gain a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge, along with the necessary skills and experience to create engaging user experiences. You will study modules that cover the entire user-centred design and evaluation process; from understanding user needs, to designing interactive systems that meet those needs, to evaluating the usability of those (and existing systems) through user research.

Placements

You will have the option to undertake a six month UX internship, after the taught part of the course has finished.

All internships are paid and provide valuable work experience, enhancing employability. As an internship student you can apply the HCI/UX knowledge and skills you have developed on the course in real-world projects and build a UX work portfolio. This supports you in standing out in the job market. You will also get the opportunity to conduct your independent research project on a topic of interest to both you and the internship company. This helps ensure the practical importance of the research.

Academic facilities

You will benefit from the use of the City Interaction Lab - a combined commercial and research lab, where we have undertaken UX consultancy for prestigious companies including Virgin Atlantic. The lab is fitted with the latest technologies including a usability testing suite, mobile testing station, eye-tracker, interactive tabletop, brain interaction technology, 3D printer and more. We employ student consultants on some projects, providing the opportunity to work on real client projects.

Teaching and learning

The course is delivered by distinguished academics from City University London's Centre for HCI Design, who all have a passion for user-centred design. Industry professionals also participate in teaching and learning - by giving guest lectures, running practitioner tutorials and even by providing feedback on students' design outputs and input into module content, ensuring that students learn the knowledge and skills most valued by industry.

Assessment

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities and interactive workshops and tutorials. It is assessed in a variety of ways, including:
-Examinations (which focus on applying HCI theory in realistic situations).
-Coursework (which range from written reports and essays, to posters, presentations and design documentation - e.g. wireframe prototypes). A range of both group and individual courseworks are set during the course. Group courseworks are often centred around realistic design projects.
-Independent research project (dissertation). The independent project allows students to conduct original research on an HCI topic of their choice.
-Each of these account for around one-third of the total course assessment. However, the exact balance varies according to the chosen elective module.

Modules

You will study seven core modules and one elective module that cover the entire user-centred design and evaluation process. Modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities and interactive workshops and tutorials. These include sessions delivered by guest lecturers from industry. Full-time students spend eight hours/week in lectures and four hours/week in seminars/tutorials. Part-time students spend half this time in classes. Overall workload is around 36 hours/week for full-time and 18 hours/week for part-time students.

You will also undertake an independent Research Project, for which our module on Research Methods and Professional Issues will prepare you.

A series of optional, but recommended, practitioner tutorials supplement the taught modules. These include talks, workshops and field trips. Previous tutorials have featured HCI/UX practitioners from prestigious companies including Foolproof, Futureheads and eBay.

This course empowers students to succeed in a variety of User Experience (UX) roles in leading digital agencies, business consultancies, IT companies and commercial/government organisations.

There is an increasing need for specialists with a deep knowledge of Human-Computer Interaction design. As the industry continues to expand, there is no better time to become a Master in this field. The course is also an excellent starting point for those wanting to pursue a PhD in HCI.
