Programme Description

The MSc in Cloud Computing equips students with the fundamental knowledge and practical skills required to become a practitioner in this rapidly expanding area of computing.

Worldwide opinion in the computing industry is that this decade will be dominated by advances in the architectures and technologies that deliver Cloud Computing. Cloud Computing platforms are rapidly becoming the preferred route for the development of powerful and expandable IT infrastructures for today’s businesses.

The MSc Cloud Computing programme equips you with the skills necessary to fully understand the world of cloud computing and associated aspects such as cloud security and cloud software engineering. You will also learn about how cloud computing provides support for the new technologies being used for Big Data systems and the Internet of Things.

In addition to gaining an understanding of the fundamental principles underpinning these areas, you will gain essential skills in developing software applications using these technologies. You will also study project management and research methods.

Assessment

Assessment is used to demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes. The methods of assessment include class tests, coursework assignments, practical tests and technical reports. Practical implementation and evaluation form a significant part of the assessment for the taught modules and for the work of the MSc dissertation.

About the programme

A number of prominent technology experts, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, have been proclaiming the focus of software innovation has nearly completely shifted from an emphasis on developing tools for use on full-size personal computers to developing for mobile devices.

The MSc Mobile Web Development programme intends to develop these skills and produce graduates who are in a position to target employment opportunities in software development for the mobile web.

Through this two-year programme you will get a first-hand understanding of the vital problem-solving role of software, the interdisciplinary opportunities available, and what computational systems can achieve.

Through a gentle introduction and intensive support, you will be introduced to programming skills using important languages such as Java and Python. Emphasis is placed on handling data and you will develop essential skills in SQL (Structured Query Language) for advanced database functionality using industry standard products such as Oracle™.

A choice of taught optional modules allows you to further develop skills in areas of your choice.

Students may choose to apply for a paid 7-12 month professional work placement to be undertaken on completion of Spring semester and before completing the MSc course with a 60-credit dissertation. This provides valuable work experience to develop your IT Professional skills.

Structure

You will undertake a placement following the taught stage of the course and prior to undertaking your individual project and dissertation. Most students start their placement in the summer of Year 1. The breakdown is as follows:

The School of Computer Science and Informatics has a strong and active research culture which informs and directs our teaching. We are committed to providing teaching of the highest standard and received an excellent report in the most recent Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) review.

A diverse range of teaching and learning styles are used throughout the MSc in Computing and the MSc in Computing with Placement. Students will attend lectures, participate in seminars, workshops and tutorials, and carry out practical and laboratory work.

Students obtain support materials either via Learning Central (Cardiff University’s Virtual Learning Environment) or from study packs specially developed for selected modules.

Assessment

Assessment is through a mixture of written examinations and coursework, the relative weights of which vary according to the nature of the module. The final project is assessed by a dissertation, except for the MSc in IT Consultancy for which the practical consultancy work is assessed through a series of reports covering each of the projects undertaken.

This is a conversion course aimed at graduates with a first degree in a non-computing discipline who want to gain employment in the lucrative IT industry.

You begin by studying key computing topics including:
-Introduction to databases and big data.
-Computer programming and web development.
-Introduction to technology and computer hardware.
-IT project management and modern development methods.

These modules provide the background knowledge you need to develop more advanced skills later in the course. They allow you to become familiar with the major technologies and concepts that underpin the modern computing industry.

Your learning at this stage has a practical focus and you are encouraged to take part in technical development work.

You go on to study a specialist topic in more depth with the choice of: databases; big data; web and cloud technologies. These areas are very current within the computing industry and in high demand of qualified IT personnel.

You then take an industrial expertise module where you have the opportunity to engage in live projects for real clients. This gives you experience working in a team to identify client needs, plan projects and produce working solutions.

During the final part of the course you complete an individual project which is the equivalent of a dissertation. To prepare you for this project, you first take a module on research skills and principles. You gain an understanding of research methods and learn how to manage a project of this kind.

As well as submitting project materials, you also deliver an assessed presentation describing your work to an audience.
