What you will study

This programme involves seven months of taught modules including Research Methods, Quantitative Methods, Contemporary Accounting Issues and Corporate Governance. These modules are designed to give students the platform to progress from a diploma to a masters via a dissertation.

The programme is also suitable for those who wish to proceed to a PhD in Accounting and Finance. The programme does not offer exemptions from professional accounting examinations.

The programme is a challenging one both intellectually and in workload. However, the rewards are tremendous. The teaching and learning processes are formative. Most MBAs will find their studies are life changing, bringing opportunities which otherwise would not have presented themselves. The competence and confidence, which accompanies the learning and development process equips participants for the greater things to come.

Course structure

The programme is offered part-time. The course has a minimum duration of two and a half years although we would expect most students to complete within three.

Executive MBA students attend a combination of evening, afternoon and weekend sessions over each of the two semesters each year.

There are three stages in the Executive MBA Programme:

core compulsory modules that build knowledge and skills across key business and management disciplines and fields;
optional specialist streams aimed at ‘implementation/application’ and ‘project management’ within either public sector or SME management including innovation/entrepreneurship;
an individual project based on a real project in the student’s place of work.
The programme starts in mid-September each year with a three day introductory module aimed at building study skills and imparting the MBA ethos, starting the process of ice breaking and group working, and sorting out domestic and technical matters prior to commencing the course.

The programme is taught in two semesters each year. Students will normally complete three modules each semester. Hence, over two years they will complete the required 12 modules comprising the core and specialist streams.

Two modules are taught in parallel and teaching is timetabled over ten weeks on Tuesday evenings and Friday afternoons each week. The third module is taught over four days in concentrated weekend blocks.

The public sector touches all our lives and has undergone major changes in recent years. It has been at the forefront of developing innovative management practices in a demanding range of political and social contexts. This module explores the complex and challenging world of public sector management and engages the student in the issues of managing and developing effective, efficient and responsive public services.
Entrepreneurship and small enterprise management stream
Entrepreneurs and small firms are the lifeblood of an economy, and make an increasing contribution to innovation, wealth creation and employment. This module provides a detailed insight into the entrepreneurship and the role of small firms within the economy. It explores the process of establishing a venture from idea generation to the completion of a business plan. It then takes the student through the process of developing a business plan and its different components, including business description and the market; development and production; sales and marketing; management team and the financial plan.
Dissertation/Project (1 module)

The Dissertation or Project will normally be based on an investigation relating to a student's workplace or a more general work related issue. It is a significant piece of work requiring diverse skills in problem identification, definition, methodology selection and development, data collection, data analysis, synthesis and the development of conclusions and recommendations based on clearly articulated objectives. Normally, students will have a work based mentor and will be under the supervision of an appropriate academic from within the Management Centre. Word length is between 12,000 and 20,000 words.

The MA in Art History and Curating offers a theoretical and critical approach to the study of art history and curatorial practice. Focusing mainly on the modern period (19th and 20th centuries), the programme will address key developments in art and art history up to the present day. For students who do not wish to undertake a full MA, a Postgraduate Certificate is also available.

The programme would appeal to graduates who have studied Fine Art, Art History or any other Arts and Humanities discipline, or those from non arts backgrounds wishing to pursue a new subject. It will also appeal to those already working in the museums or galleries sector wishing to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD). There are opportunities to participate in overseas study tours and in recent years the department has visited Amsterdam, Barcelona, Bilbao, Milan, Paris, Florence, Venice and New York. London visits and regional exhibition visits may also take place, depending on the exhibition programme for the year. The Arts play a significant and growing role in wealth creation and the regeneration of urban and rural environments. Visiting galleries and museums has never been more popular. Study Details / Module Information

At the outset you will be introduced to the Art History and Curating programme through a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials, delivered by specialist academic staff. Your tutors will provide you with a firm foundation and knowledge of visual cultures and applied arts primarily in Europe and the U.S. enabling you to understand your own learning and study needs within the context of the subject. A contextual journal is introduced that will underpin your academic studies facilitating a personal and individual perspective.

You will continue to develop your theoretical skills through continuous tutorial consultation and supervision enabling you to devise your own work programme from the range of courses on offer. Teaching is by lectures, seminars, tutorials and gallery visits to enable the first hand study of artworks; their context and curation. This one-year course is intended for students with a keen interest in integrating environmental management with business practices.

Sustainable development is a principal goal and a key policy feature of many of the major institutes and governments of the world. A key element of achieving sustainable development is the balance of Environmental, Economic and Social development drivers. This course will take an integrated view of environmental management within a business context and will provide the specialist interdisciplinary training that is required to fully integrate sustainable development objectives into businesses management. By integrating modules from Bangor Business School and The School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography, it will train students to be sophisticated environmental managers who can interpret legislative and audit requirements and deliver them in a manner conducive to continued economic development. The programme includes highly topical case studies from across these sectors reflecting changing strategies and alternative approaches.

Course structure
The course has 2 parts. Part 1 runs from October to May and consists of six taught components and must be completed successfully before proceeding to part 2. Part 2 is the research element of the course, this is where you complete your dissertation and it runs from June to September. You will use your knowledge and skills developed in part 1 to develop your own research ideas and to examine your chosen topic in detail.

Part one subjects:

Organisations and People ASB 4431: To provide an integrated analysis of management, organisations and people, developing the conceptual, strategic and practical skills necessary for managers in complex, global organisational contexts, drawing on key issues arising from contemporary research in organisational behaviour (OB) and human resource management (HRM).

Strategic Management ASB 4413: This module introduces the language of strategic management and explores the link between strategic and operational management. You will develop a critical understanding of the strategic processes that lie at the core of business management processes and how to place strategic decision making within a dynamic business environment.

Finance for Managers ASB 4007: This module is designed for those who aim to achieve a basic understanding of financial management and control, and who require an understanding of finance in order to manage an organisation effectively. Financial planning and control are central themes, as well as the appraisal techniques of investment projects.

New Venture Creation ASB4010: Evaluates the role of entrepreneurs and small firms as the lifeblood of an economy; to examine their contribution to innovation, wealth creation and employment; and to gain insights into the concepts of entrepreneurship and routes to new venture creation.

Green Economies DXX4518: This module explores the process of establishing a venture from idea generation to the completion of a business plan which incorporates environmental planning and management. It takes the student through the actual process of developing a business plan and its different components, the market and sustainability. The module considers how businesses (new and existing) can embrace the green economy whilst functioning as part of an economy that has historically placed very little attention on anything ’green’. Key learning themes in this module include:

Strategic Environmental ManagementDXX4524: This module is designed to provide an understanding of the principles of sustainable development, environmental legislation, environmental auditing and assessment, and green technological development. This flexible programme will give you a sophisticated understanding of theories and methods at the forefront of Theology and Religious Studies. You will study diverse religious traditions in the UK and beyond, as well as their impact on the world around us.
Core modules explore the relationship between religion, theology and the public sphere in areas such as human rights, wealth and wealth creation, terrorism and social justice. You will also gain an understanding of research methods in the humanities and social sciences.
Then you will select from optional modules focusing on topics that suit your interests such as philosophy of religion, the links between religion and global development or gender, multiculturalism and more.

Course Content

Your first semester will equip you with the knowledge and skills to study theology and religion. You will learn about political, urban, systematic and practical theologies among many others, focusing on issues such as racism, criminal justice and social cohesion.

This foundation will enable you to gain specialist knowledge in the areas that suit your interests. You will choose two optional modules from the range we offer, allowing you to focus on topics such as Muslims and multiculturalism, or philosophical approaches to spirituality.

During the programme you will acquire skills in research and interpretation and good social and cultural awareness. You’ll demonstrate this with your dissertation – an independent study on a research topic of your choice – which you will submit by the end of the programme in August. You can even go into greater depth if you swap one optional module for an extended dissertation.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll study over a longer period and take fewer modules in each year.

Successful completion of this exam would exempt students from all of CIMA's Operational level and Certificate level papers.

The course concludes with a major project or dissertation. This is another opportunity for students to specialise their knowledge, conducting in-depth research into an area that complements their unique career ambitions.

Course Content

Units include:

- PR in a Multimedia World (30 credits) - this unit covers how the theory and practice of PR changes as communication moves across paid, owned, shared and earned media. Paradigm shifts from traditional PR approaches are considered in the context of actual PR campaigns currently running.
- Multimedia Campaign Planning (30 credits) - students get the opportunity to develop and implement a number of campaign activities across a wide variety of platforms, testing their ability to integrate paid, owned, shared and earned media in a PR campaign.
- Media Measurement & Evaluation (15 credits) - this unit introduces students to the measurement techniques applied in advertising, marketing, promotion and PR sectors, including the evolution of RoE (return on engagement).
- Research Methods (15 credits) - this unit raises the students’ research skills to master’s level and includes SPSS software and other methodologies that are relevant to their particular areas of interest. This is a shared unit.
- Professional Development (30 credits) - this unit positions the MA programme in terms of the student’s career aspiration, identifying skill sets and development needs in a personal development programme. This forms the basis of a freelance/workplace project and informs the student’s choice of dissertation topic.
- Major Project/Dissertation (60 credits) - the culmination of this MA programme. Theory and practice learned in the previous units inform a final research project.

Teaching, learning and assessment -

Work experience:

One unit (Professional Practice) requires a work placement or freelance project to be completed. Students are encouraged to source their own client (through Solent Creatives) or to find a work placement that is appropriate to their career ambitions. The course team will be available to provide support and guidance as necessary.

The placements and projects vary in length, depending on client needs. The minimum required is a two week placement, but on average the client projects last much longer.

Assessment:

Assessment methods include essays, practical portfolios, reflective reports, and campaign outputs. The major project/dissertation unit includes a presentation during the early stages of development. ‘PR in a Multimedia World’ includes an exam.

Our facilities -

We have a fully equipped IT centre with both PC and Mac computers. These feature industry-standard image manipulation, video and audio editing software. Access to camera equipment and professional recording devices for podcast and video creation is highly likely, and access to photographic equipment is always available.

Web-based learning -

Solent’s virtual learning environment (VLE) provides quick online access to assignments, lecture notes, suggested reading and other course information. The unit materials are posted on the VLE and students are expected to have reviewed them prior to attending class. The materials include journal articles, videos and web-based resources.

The MA offers two pathways:

MA Film and Screen Studies: Moving Image Studies Pathway:
The moving image media today are a concentrated form of culture, ideas, socialisation, wealth and power. 21st-century globalisation, ecology, migration and activism fight over and through them. How have the media built on, distorted and abandoned their past? How are they trying to destroy, deny or build the future? This pathway explores new critical approaches that address the currency of moving image media in today's global context – their aesthetics, technology and politics. It seeks to extend the boundaries for studying moving images by considering a wider range of media and introducing students to a wider range of approaches for investigating moving images' past and present.

MA Film and Screen Studies: Media Arts Pathway:
The most intense and extreme forms of media, experimental media arts, test to breaking point our established ideas and practices. From wild abstraction and surrealist visions to activist and community arts, they ask the profoundest questions about high art and popular culture, the individual and the social, meaning and beauty. This pathway explores these emerging experimental practices of image making and criticism. Students on this pathway are encouraged not just to study but to curate and critique past, present and future media arts by building exhibitions and visual essays of their own. Short practical workshops will enable students to make the most of the skills you bring into the course.

Structure

The MA consists of:

two core modules (60 credits in total) comprising one shared and one pathway-specific core module
option modules to the value of 60 credits
a dissertation (60 credits) on a topic agreed in conjuction with your supervisor (on the Media Arts pathway up to 50% of the dissertation can be submitted in audiovisual form)

Core modules

The core modules will give you a foundation to the subject. The shared core module in Archaeology of the Moving Image introduces current debates in film and screen studies through the key notion of media history.

Pathway-specific cores develop new ways of conceptualising the cinematic today, focusing respectively on the political aspects of media forms and styles in Politics of the Audiovisual (the Moving Image Studies pathway) and on artists' use of various screen media in Experimental Media (the Media Arts pathway).

Assessment

The Building Surveying programme is for those involved in the maintenance, refurbishment, alteration and extension of existing buildings, or in project management and design for public bodies, commercial organisations and professional practice firms.

This programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). - Surveying project
Our surveyors look at financing a project, procuring construction work, financial management and the entire construction process. We want our students to have 'real world' experiences while studying at LSBU, of field work is a major component. We create these situations by inviting guest speaks in to give up-to-date lectures, having great industry links and taking our students into situations where they would like to work. Most of our surveying and construction courses give our students the opportunity to carry out a construction project. Their work will take into account current construction technologies, energy efficiency solutions and environmental and sustainability issues. The project is very detailed and is carried out across site visits, analysing on-going construction projects and an appraisal of eco-technologies. These factors can be influenced by a construction's location so our field trips can take our students both overseas to expanding countries like Dubai or round the corner to building developments happening on our own campus.

- Market report and case study analysis
Students on our MSc Surveying courses can choose to study International Real Estate & Construction as an optional. For this complex module students need to go on a study visit to an international city which has an emerging real estate and construction market.

Past students have gone abroad to take in either Dubai in the United Arab Emirates or Shanghai in the People's Republic of China. This MSc focuses on the design, creation, and operation of democratic institutions. Students gain understanding of when a given set of institutes are appropriate for a society and what will make them function, and how scholars have thought about these matters, applying theory to examples of institution-building and design.

Degree information

Students are equipped with the theoretical tools and empirical evidence necessary for an in-depth understanding of democratic institutions and politics. They develop an understanding of the potential benefits and pitfalls of different institutional designs, reforms, and administrative practices, and are able to analyse problems raised by new and reforming democracies.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four compulsory core modules (75 credits), optional modules (45 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits).

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 words.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures and seminars. Assessment is through unseen examinations, long essays, coursework, and the dissertation.
