The Water Management Option was one of the original options of our MSc Environmental Technology course first offered in 1977, and remains at the cutting edge today, with research into the balance between water treatment, energy use, climate change and legislation being the focus of intense interest.

Aims

The aim of the option is to produce graduates who understand the challenges posed by water supply and water resources management, and who meet the demands of organisations concerned with the water environment and water technology. These include water companies, regulators, consultancies and research organisations. Changing priorities in these organisations mean there is an increasing emphasis on management in addition to the traditional broad foundation in the basic concepts of water technology and the water environment. As a result, the Water Management Option spotlights and develops management techniques, with two extended consultancy-style projects, one run in conjunction with Hounslow London Borough Council and the other with Anglian Water plc. In addition to lectures and tutorials the students develop their research and presentation skills in a dynamic, cooperative and competitive environment.

At the end of the course, the student will understand the basic concepts of water technology and the water environment both locally and globally, and be able to:

  • apply this understanding to water management issues
  • select and use a range of appropriate management techniques
  •  communicate effectively with others concerned with water management issues, (for example environmental engineers)
  •  apply this knowledge and skill to water management issues in both the developed and developing world
  • work professionally within an organisation, cooperating with others and communicating ideas in oral and written form.

Content

The Option comprises a number of modules designed to introduce the student to the broad range of scientific, environmental and management issues relevant to man’s effects on the Earth’s most precious resource. In addition to lectures, delivered by a of leading practitioners from regulators, water companies, consultancies, research and other environmental organisations, there are seminars and practical coursework assessments that provide experience of contaminated land remediation and strategic investment planning for water supply and wastewater treatment.

Module Aims and Learning Outcomes

Environment and Health

  • To give the student a foundation in science and policy basics to understand aspects of environmental management and technology and its impact on health.
  • Be able to explain the main chemical and biological processes important in the physical environment, the parameters that define environmental quality and its effect on health.

Water Technology and Management

  • To introduce the student to the various unit processes used in water treatment, including underlying theory and technology.
  • Be able to describe the basic concepts of water treatment technology and the selection of unit treatment processes.

Environmental Policy and Resource Management

  • To provide students with an introduction to the legal, technical and practical issues involved in contaminated land and resources management.
  • Be able to appreciate the challenges for the management of contaminated land and be able to describe the basic concepts in relation to resources and waste management.

Environmental Decision Making and Tools

  • To introduce students to some of the most important policy tools and techniques to assist them in decision-making.
  • Be able to select and use various management techniques and policy tools to support decision- making in environmental and water management and policy.

Integrated Land and Water Management

  • To provide students with an overview of problems, potential remedies and possible outcomes involved in holistic management of the environment.
  • Be able to assess environmental problems and environmental relationships in order to propose holistic solutions that maximise overall benefits and minimise adverse impacts.

Environmental Pollution and Assessment

  • To enhance students' understanding of the pollution pathways in the environment from source to receptor.
  • Be able to describe water recycling technologies and assess the physical and chemical processes involved in the progress of pollutants from source to receptor.

Finally, a four-day study tour incorporating a programme of visits gives operational insight into many aspects taught on the option. Visits to sites concerned with water and environmental resource management and related environmental conservation projects are complemented by visits designed to give an understanding of the technology used for water and wastewater treatment.

Graduates from our course have a very high success rate in achieving well paid employment. This is commonly in environmental consultancies and to a lesser extent in water utility companies, the Environment Agency, Defra and other regulators, and water charities in the UK, in the European Union and overseas.

Fieldwork

Students undertake two assessed pieces of coursework over the option term. One piece of coursework is in collaboration with a water company, Anglian Water and in addition to team research with other option members it involves a visit to the Anglian Water premises in East Anglia. The other piece of coursework is conducted in collaboration with the Hounslow London Borough Council. It builds on the theme of integrated land and water management and incorporates a day of water and soil sampling on Hounslow Heath in London (working alongside another of the MSc Options – Environmental Analysis & Assessment).

Anglian Water Placement

The opportunity exists for one student to carry out the MSc Environmental Technology Course Water Management Option over two years, which includes a 16 month industrial placement with Anglian Water. The MSc in Water Resources Engineering addresses water-related issues in developed and developing countries. It is jointly organized by KU Leuven and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). The general programme objective is to educate professionals and scientists through multidisciplinary and high-quality university education to contribute effectively to the development and management of local and global water resources. The programme trains students with cutting-edge technical and managerial knowledge and skills to  

(i) successfully plan, design, operate and manage water resources projects; and (ii) advise and support authorities in decision-making and policy-making that enhance the safe exploitation and re-use of wastewater and the equitable distribution and conservation of local, regional, and global water resources.  

A strong focus is put on the use of state-of-the-art numerical simulation tools for integrated water management. 

The programme deals with the methods and techniques applied in the study of 

- water needs for agriculture, industry, households, recreation, navigation, hydroelectric power generation - problems related to storm water drainage and flood damage mitigation - problems related to water quality in streams and aquifers, erosion, sedimentation, protection of ecosystems and other natural resources - integrated water management - institutional, socio-economic, and policy issues related to water resources development and management 

Employment prospects 

A combination of theory and practice ensures that students are equipped with excellent knowledge for further research and exciting job opportunities across the world. Graduates of the programme are primarily employed as 

(i) academics or scientists at universities and research institutions. Their major task is to strengthen the training and research capacity of those institutions in the field of water resources 

(ii) engineers or managers in public administrations, water user associations or private companies. 

Water resources engineers and scientists play a decisive role in the development and management of aquifers and river basins, and in deciding who does what, how much services cost, and who pays. They are the decision-makers and water managers of the future, who are capable of taking into account increased user demand and environmental needs, i.e. managing limited water resources in a sustainable and responsive way. 

International Mobility 

The master programme takes place in an intercultural and international environment. Students have the possibility to join excursions and field trips abroad and to carry out master thesis research in cooperation with our partner universities. 

Curriculum 

The full programme comprises 120 ECTS. Students with a relevant Master degree can apply for the 1-year abridged programme (60 ECTS) and will mainly follow second year courses. 

The first year curriculum builds a common foundation and is the same for all students. In the second year students design a personal programme through the selection of three elective courses, an integrated project and their master thesis research. Study programme

New water process technology needs to be developed in order to produce clean water from alternative sources like salt (sea) water, waste water or humid air minimizing the use of precious groundwater and to treat waste water and to recover valuable compounds. These challenges require academically-trained experts that can think out of the box and help to find process oriented technological solutions in the near future.

To train and educate these experts a dedicated joint master’s programme in Water Technology has been set up. From air pollution to the spread of vector-borne diseases, changes in our environment can have profound repercussions for human health.

The Health and the Global Environment Option of the MSc Environmental Technology is offered in collaboration with a highly qualified network of practitioners encompassing Imperial’s Centre for Environmental Policy, School of Public Health, the MRC-PHE Centre for Environment and Health, and the Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment. The option focusses on building students’ knowledge and understanding of the key issues that link human and environmental health.  

This is a highly dynamic and stimulating environment in which to study, where you will interact with a range of academics, staff scientists and policy analysts working on the most pressing environmental and health issues both locally and globally. 

Context

Human health is fundamentally linked to our environment. Environmental factors contribute significantly to the global disease burden, with an estimated 25% of death and disease globally linked to environmental hazards. In developing contexts, this figure can be much higher, reaching 35% in regions such as sub-Saharan Africa.

Crucially, many of these hazards are created or exacerbated by human activities, so managing health for the environment and the environment for health is a growing priority on the environment, public and global health agendas.

Content

The Health and the Global Environment Option is designed to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the key issues in environment and health. The emphasis throughout the course is on the understanding of the principles of exposure assessment, epidemiology, toxicology, health risk assessment and health protection, and their application in the field of environment and health, including:

  • field sampling and laboratory analysis for direct determination of contaminants within environmental systems;
  • practical experience of the use of key methods to assess environmental impacts on health;
  • exposure to major global public health challenges, and the stakeholders involved in tackling these issues.

The Option content covers four main themes:

Theme 1: Managing the Environment for Health

Considers the causes of environmental perturbation, its impacts on health, and approaches to resource management that may benefit health in a global context.

Theme 2: Environmental Decision-Making and Tools

Introduces important policy tools and techniques to assist in robust and transparent decision-making.

Theme 3: Quantifying Exposure and Health Impacts

Develops understanding of the principles and tools for qualitatively and/or quantitatively characterising health risks and impacts related to environmental sources.

Theme 4: Health and the Global Environment

Introduces key concepts in global health and global environmental change, their interactions and impacts, and identifies opportunities for co-management.


Fieldwork

Students complete two assessed pieces of coursework. The first is undertaken in collaboration with the Environmental Analysis & Assessment and Water Management options of the MSc, and provides a "real-world" case study looking at contaminated land and water on Hounslow Heath, near Heathrow Airport, in close collaboration with the London Borough of Hounslow Council.

The other is a client-based case study specific to the Health and Global Environment option, and provides the opportunity for students to apply their developing knowledge to an emerging problem within the field of health and the global environment. These projects vary from year to year, with past topics and clients including:

  • Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Health (International Solid Waste Association)
  • Public health and environmental issues associated with shale gas extraction (Public Health England)
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of current heat wave interventions (Committee on Climate Change)

Careers

The ultimate aim of the Health and Global Environment option is to prepare students for employment in consultancies, regulatory agencies, industry, research or non-governmental organisations where a systems-based understanding of environment and health issues is vital. Our alumni have found employment in government departments, consultancies, universities and NGOs.

It regards the whole water cycle in connection with human interventions as the basis for sustainable water management. Worldwide, there is a high and growing demand for experts adequately trained in the concepts of IWRM. Next to the technical and managerial knowledge related to water resources, these experts should also be familiar with the practices of project funding and international cooperation.

To do this, you will first reinforce your knowledge of topics and methods in eight core areas (hydrology, ecology, water quality, modelling, drought, flood risk, urban water, and catchment management). You then integrate this learning and apply it to a real-world problem in the group project. Over a 10-week period, you will work in a team of 6-8 students from a range of MSc courses on a consultancy project, handling all stages of project design and delivery from initial meetings to scope out the work to the final report and presentation. Topics vary yearly as they respond to the needs of our industrial partners, put typically relate to water resources, aquatic ecology and flood risk management. Finally, you will delve into a single topic for your individual thesis project, strengthening your skills in project design and management; data collection, analysis and interpretation; and report writing, all of which are essential for your future career.

By completing this course, you will become part of a long line (>30 years) of environmental water management alumni who can now be found across the entire water sector, from entry-level scientists to senior managers and regulators, in the UK, Europe and beyond.

Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering has been traditionally referred to as public health engineering in the United Kingdom. In this postgraduate course, the technical aspects of both natural and engineering environmental systems will be covered. There will be broad interdisciplinary subjects synthesizing knowledge from a wide spectrum of science and engineering, expanding the content of public health engineering, which in the UK has traditionally been responsible for developing the infrastructure for managing water and waste.

Teaching and learning

The number of contact hours (e.g. lectures, seminars and feedback on assignments) per module/course ranges from 50-75 hours for the one year full time programme or roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module. You will be taught by academics with a range of industrial and academia experience for each module.

Assessment

Project work, assignments and laboratory exercises in addition to substantial written examination of course materials will occur in most modules. The Environmental Engineering Research Project will require submission of a substantial final report/dissertation. Assessment of this module will involve participation in a poster and seminar presentation and a final oral examination.

Contents

The program consists of basic modules, like “Water Science”, “Principles of IWRM”, “Water Economics”, ”Water Governance” and “Project and Business Management” with the aim of providing an overview on water resources management, economics, project management and the regional and institutional context. In addition, the participants select 10 specialized electives related to topics of water resources management and technology tools emphasizing the particular situation. The first and second semester will be conducted in Hanoi at the Vietnam Academy for Water Resources while in the third semester the student will study at TH Köln, Germany.

The fourth semester will focus on the preparation of the master thesis. Internships and research stays if possible together with a local institution or company guarantee the practical orientation of the master research. Tutors pay particular attention that the knowledge acquired in the first three semesters is applied in the individual projects.

Programme Content

The programme has both January and September starts. The core induction module, which spans a number of related courses, runs twice a year to cover both starts.

In the autumn semester (September – December) students will take National Water Law and two or three options.

In the spring semester (January-May), students will take Regulation of Water Services and two or three options.

The third core module, International Water Law, runs in a block in early summer and is also offered as a short course with a wide intake of participants from around the globe. Other options are also offered in intensive block format at this time (April – June).

Students will complete a dissertation or internship. Students starting in January may be able to undertake the internship during the summer months to enable them to complete within 12 months.

Methods of Teaching & Assessment

The Graduate School utilises a wide variety of teaching and assessment for on-campus modules. These include lectures, seminars, and workshops. Face to face teaching is supplemented by materials provided through the virtual learning environment. Assessments include examinations, individual research papers, presentations and role plays. Module handbooks supplement programme handbooks and provide detailed information on teaching schedules and reading as well as assessments. The Centre regularly welcomes guest lecturers from different disciplines to broaden the student experience and give them a more holistic perspective, regardless of the background of the individual student.
