As a result of the review we are launching new course titles, reorganising and renaming some courses and withdrawing others.

As part of this review, the decision has been taken to remove Waste and Resource Management from our portfolio for 2017/18 registration. We are confident that we can offer a suitable and exciting replacement and believe that the Environmental Engineering MSc is most closely aligned to this course. It is designed for professionals requiring current knowledge of sustainable waste management and those seeking a career in the industry. The underlying ethos is that sustainable waste management requires scientific and managerial expertise as it changes focus from the safe, least-cost disposal of unwanted materials to their best use as a resource, and their optimal management in the long term.

MSc Waste and Resource Management provides a critical approach to theories, techniques and methods in sustainable waste management and provides students with a learning environment in which they will develop their capacity for independent study, their ability to collaborate with others in team settings, and their capacity for critical thought and reflection. This MSc Award in Waste Management focuses on a range of issues and problems encountered by the waste industry in both the private and public sectors.

There is a strong emphasis on links to both environmental science and environmental management throughout the course.

The Award is broadly divided into two main areas of interest.

Firstly, core modules deal primarily with the sustainable management of waste materials and some of the technologies available to successfully treat the different materials, and products or emission streams of such technological solutions.

Secondly, core and core option modules introduce a range of the more generic study and personal development skills that a project manager in waste might be expected to demonstrate.

Furthermore the programme aims to introduce students to the appropriate methods of sampling, analysis and data handling needed to monitor processes and associated environmental impacts.

This is a broad based and flexible course that will enable you to pursue a range of environmental careers, from environmental specialist to a manager with an environmental remit. Alternatively the course, or modules within it, can provide valuable continuing professional development (CPD) should you be a professional wanting to refresh or expand your skills in environmental management. This can be done by taking the whole course or individual modules as stand-alone CPD items.

This course has been developed following extensive consultation with industry. Unusually, and perhaps uniquely, for an Environmental Management Master’s, you can include Business Management modules in your options; something that is seen as a real benefit by our industry partners. In addition, through choosing particular modules and assessment options, the course can be tailored to suit a range of environmental interests and therefore careers in the environmental and management sectors. For example this course will suit you if you wish to pursue a career in ecological consultancy, pollution control or environmental hazards and liabilities.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT

You will study two compulsory 30 credit modules (one in each taught trimester) that will provide a detailed overview of environmental management practices, principles, tools and techniques. These will include topics such as pollution, EMS, biodiversity, environmental monitoring, GIS, environmental decision-making and communication skills.

Modules amounting to a further 30 credits are also selected in each taught trimester, from a choice of environmental management or business management topics. You must take a minimum of 30 credits in environmental management and there are four 15 credit environmental management modules available. These are focused on: ecosystem management; environment and society; applied geomorphology; and wastes, energy and pollution. Business management modules are available in topics such as: contemporary management issues; entrepreneurship; financial management; marketing; and managing people.

Finally, you will complete a 60 credit independent research project that will allow you to demonstrate your environmental understanding in an area relevant to your interests and career; from biodiversity to business. You may also elect to use an existing project related to your employment as your dissertation.

MODULES

TRIMESTER 1
You will study the following modules in Trimester 1:

Principles of Environmental Management (30 credits):
This compulsory module provides an overview of environmental management principles, tools, and legislation: including sustainability, resource management, environmental hazards and ecosystem services.

Plus optional modules totalling 30 credits:

Waste, Energy and Pollution Management (15 credits) optional:
Develop your understanding of the potential negative impacts that arise through human interactions with the environment. Key aspects will include resource use and polluting emissions, especially through our generation of waste and utilisation of energy sources. It will also enable you to appreciate the role of new technologies in alleviating such effects.

Environment and Society: Global Perspectives on Policy and Practice (15 credits) optional:
Gain a deeper, critical understanding of the human dimensions of environmental change. Develop your sense of the multi-layered and contested nature of environmental ‘problems’ and the ‘solutions’ variously proposed. A broad, interdisciplinary and critical awareness is encouraged through consideration of academic and policy literatures from different global and historical contexts.

Business Management Options:
Environmental managers often need a range of management skills, and these modules will allow you to develop some of these important skills. Modules available include: Financial Management, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Managing People, and Management in Practice. Management in Practice is a 30 credit module providing an excellent overview if you have no formal business training. The other modules are 15 credit modules and will allow the development of specific skills.


TRIMESTER 2
You will study the following modules in Trimester 2:

Professional Practice for Environmental Management (30 credits):
This compulsory module develops key professional skills, including: GIS, environmental risks and decision- making, survey and monitoring, sampling design, data management and analysis, reporting and communication.

Plus optional modules totalling 30 credits:

Ecosystem Management (15 credits) optional:
Modern economic theory (ecological economics) considers ecosystem sustainability as the foundation of all economic sustainability and its crucial role in underpinning business and political decisions. Hence, this module investigates the natural environment in terms of ecosystem functions and resource management, both of which can provide benefits and provide challenges for human beings and the wider environment. It also considers the extent to which we can assign economic value to nature.

Applied Geomorphology (15 credits) optional:
Develop the theoretical and practical skills to equip you to undertake integrated and applied geomorphological projects relevant to the environmental management and consultancy sectors.

Business Management Options:
From a range of management skills and specialisms (see Trimester 1 options)

TRIMESTER 3
In this trimester you complete a 60 credit research project, which will require you to research an applied environmental question. There is considerable flexibility in subject choice and the project focus will reflect your core interests, and may range from the influence of environmental issues on business decision-making, to monitoring biodiversity. This could include industry-based/work placement projects, with our industry partners.

TEACHING METHODS AND RESOURCES

Teaching is a mix of lectures, seminars, small tutor groups, practical/field work sessions and online/desk- based study.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The dependence of economic sustainability and social wellbeing on a sustainable natural environment is now accepted, and through several international agreements, Governments across the world have acknowledged the urgent need to secure environmental sustainability. The need for well- informed Environmental Managers has therefore never been greater. This means managers who not only understand the environment, but also understand its importance to economic and social well being.

This Master’s will provide you with the expertise, practical skills and confidence to pursue specialist careers in environmental management, environmental consultancy or ecology and provide crucial environmental understanding for successful careers in local government, the civil service, engineering, planning or business.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

A range of assessment methods are used, all with a strong emphasis on applying the skills you learn during your course to workplace scenarios. This MSc Programme is based at our ORKNEY CAMPUS in the far north of Scotland - a unique opportunity to study a live marine environment.

As man increases his demands upon the oceans, their sustainable development will depend on a rational management strategy for the total resource.

The professional working in the marine environment is constantly required to be multidisciplinary, and able to appreciate the conflicts that arise between conservation and development.

Overview

This is a 12 month full-time MSc degree course taught at our Orkney Campus. It involves studying 8 taught courses. If you can demonstrate that you have already mastered the subject, you may apply for an exemption from one of the taught courses and undertake a Design Project instead. The MSc programme is completed with a research dissertation equivalent to 4 taught courses.

Programme content

- Conservation, Sustainable Development & Resource Management
This course takes a broad look at the principles of sustainability and sustainable resource use, including environmental ethics. You will explore the challenges faced by policy makers and marine managers when incorporating these broad principles into policy and practice. You will learn about how sensitive habitats and the species they support are managed and protected, and how impacts from development are mitigated. The course gives an introduction to biodiversity conservation and the biodiversity action planning process, as well as examining issues around the relationship between conservation and science.

- Environmental Policy & Risk
This course explores the legal and policy context in which renewable energy is being exploited. You will gain an understanding of international law, particularly the Law of the Sea, property rights and how these relate to different energy resources. The course also looks at regulatory issues at the international, European and UK level, which affect how energy developments are taken forward, as well as risk assessment and management in the context of renewable energy developments.

- Oceanography & Marine Biology
This course is designed to give you an understanding of the science of waves and tides, and how this affects efforts to exploit energy from these resources. You will also learn about marine ecosystems and how these may be impacted by energy extraction and about the challenges and impacts associated with carrying out engineering operations in the marine environment.

- Resource Development
This course examines the exploitation and use of marine resources (including oil and gas, fisheries, transport, renewables, aquaculture and tourism), issues associated with development in the marine environment (including pollution and waste) and how these activities are regulated. You will learn about marine technologies and the challenges of developing and deploying technologies to exploit resources in the marine environment.

- Introduction to Marine Spatial Planning
This course introduces students to the emerging policy and practice of marine planning (global and regional). It examines political, jurisdictional and rights issues in the introduction of economic activities into the marine commons (the ‘Blue Growth Agenda’). The framework of marine legislation is explained and methods of conflict resolution are explored. A series of international case studies will identify the various tools and techniques being used around the world to manage human activity and balance conservation interests with demands for economic growth.

- GIS
Geographic Information System mapping is a tool which is now widely used by both developers and regulators in the management and development of marine resources. Within the context of Marine Spatial Planning the use of GIS has rapidly become the standard means of collating and analysing spatial information regarding resource use. This course will explain the principles and provide hands-on experience of applying state of the art mapping software in project based case studies.

- Development Appraisal
Looking at what happens when renewable energy technologies are deployed, this course examines development constraints and opportunities: policy and regulatory issues (including strategic environmental assessment, environmental impact assessment, landscape assessment, capacity issues and the planning system). It also looks at the financial aspects (valuation of capital asses, financing projects and the costs of generating electricity) and at project management.

- Development Project
This is a team project, where students have the opportunity to apply what they have learned through the other courses in relation to a hypothetical project. You have to look at a range of issues including resource assessment, site selection, development layout, consents, planning and economic appraisal, applying the knowledge and tools you have studied.

The structure of the MSc Environmental Management degrees is based on six core modules and a choice of three taught modules from specialists ones. Students will begin their studies, for both full-time and part time students, with a core module in Sustainability and Environmental Systems. To obtain a Masters degree you need to carry out a supervised research project comprising of another taught module, research methods and a 10,000-15,000 word research project. The project can be based on an environmental management issue that interests you or is relevant to your organisation. If you do not want to carry out a research project you may graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma.

This course is available both full and part-time with intakes in September (Semester A) and January (Semester B). Full time study in Semester A takes 1 year. Full time study beginning in Semester B will take 15 months. Part time study options typically take two years but students are given a maximum of five years to complete.

Teaching methods

The programme approach integrates blended learning, combining face-to-face teaching and tutorials with online learning materials, easy contact with tutors and online submission of assignments. All modules are delivered as intensive two or three day short courses that run primarily on Fridays and Saturdays.

Full-time students attend tutorials in the weeks following a short course, receiving face-to-face support.

Part-time students attend courses at the University for only about six working days a year. These students complete their assignments through making use of our outstanding virtual learning environment Studynet and keeping in remote contact with tutors. Most part time students complete this course within 2 years but you are given a maximum of 5 to complete.

Assessment is primarily by assignments, often directly related to environmental management in the workplace or field. These can include reports, essays, seminars and online tests.

Water, Waste and Environmental Engineering has been traditionally referred to as public health engineering in the United Kingdom. Teaching and learning

The number of contact hours (e.g. lectures, seminars and feedback on assignments) per module/course ranges from 50-75 hours for the one year full time programme or roughly equivalent to four hours per week per module. The increasing demand for raw materials, their price volatility, the production concentration and the market distortions imposed by some countries, confront Europe and other world regions with a number of challenges along the entire value chain. To tackle this supply risk challenge and to deal with environmental problems arising from too large emissions of waste (such as CO2), technological innovation is required with respect to exploration of new resources and sustainable primary mining, sustainable use of resources in specific products and production processes (e.g. substitution of critical metals in materials), prevention of waste generation, valorisation of secondary (alternative) resources and recovery/recycling of resources from end-of-life products.

The International Master of Science in Sustainable and Innovative Natural Resource Management (SINReM) aims at educating a new range of professionals with a holistic overview on resource management and up-to-date processing technologies, who are familiar with sustainability concepts and possess an innovative mind-set to boost the economic importance of this sector.

Students will be acquainted with the different (technological) options for optimizing flows of natural resources in the different parts of the chain, ranging from resource exploration over sustainable materials use and use of resources in production processes to recovery/recycling of resources from end-of-life products. The focus is on developing ground-breaking technologies, engineering and re-inventing the value chain to make it more sustainable. Students will get a broad view on the entire value chain in its different aspects.

Networking and exchange of knowledge and experience between different nationalities, between academic and non-academic partners and between scholars and students will be promoted.

SINReM is offered by a consortium consisting of 3 Institutes of Higher Education:

During this first year, students are introduced to the value chain, management of natural resources, the circular economy, its economic, policy and legal aspects, inventory techniques, the clean technology concept and life cycle assessment tools to assess sustainability of products, services and processes. Moreover, students are exposed to a basic training in the different technological tools that can be used to intervene in different parts of the value chain (geo-resource exploration, sustainable (chemical) extraction processes, sustainable materials and resource recovery technology).

In the second year students have the option to further specialize by selecting a major and conducting thesis research. They interact with the professional sector through cooperation in thesis research, internships, lectures and seminars.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted, candidates must have at least a bachelor degree (minimum 180 ECTS credits) in engineering or science (physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, earth science, materials science) including 15 ECTS in mathematics and/or physics and 10 ECTS pure or applied chemistry or an equivalent level from a recognised university or Engineering College.

In terms of language requirements the following is currently applied in or acceptable by the partner institutes. Changes to these requirements are however admissible (upon approval by the MB).

Facilities

All masters students have access to our excellent laboratory facilities which include equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. There are three dedicated water laboratory staff available to help you use our equipment who are specialists in pollutant analysis, hydraulics and running continuous trials.

Practical training includes:
- Hand-pump maintenance using the largest single site collection of hand-pumps;
- latrine slab construction;
- flow measurements; and
- water quality sampling and analysis.

Field visits are made to relevant UK facilities.

WEDC has a unique sector Resource Centre with a dedicated and skilled information officer. Over 19,000 items can be searched on a customized database allowing ready access to this collection of books, series, country files, student projects, videos, journals, maps, and manufacturers' catalogues.

The Resource Centre also provides a dedicated quiet study space for WEDC students. Many items including all WEDC publications and over 2500 papers presented at 37 WEDC International Conferences are available in the open access sector knowledge base.

How you will learn

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules and optional modules which may be selected. A group case study module draws together material from across the programme and develops team working skills. The individual research project and dissertation (frequently linked to specific needs of an agency) of between 75 and 150 pages in length concludes the programme. To support your learning you will have access to our comprehensive facilities including laboratories, hand-pumps, and a dedicated Resource Centre.

- Assessment
For most modules, students are assessed by one item of coursework (two items for foundation modules) and an in-class test. The Group Project module is assessed on the basis of written documents and spoken presentations, including an individual component for the module mark. The individual Research Dissertation is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation, and this module includes an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of academic staff.

Careers and further study

Many WEDC students and alumni work for international NGOs (MSF, Oxfam, SCF, GOAL, WaterAid, etc.) and agencies (such as UNICEF), or National Governments. Graduate job titles include Sanitation Technical

Bursaries are available for self-funding international students.

Business Planning for the Green Economy: This module explores the process of establishing a venture from idea generation to the completion of a business plan which incorporates environmental planning and management. It takes the student through the actual process of developing a business plan and its different components, the market and sustainability. Specific topics include:

The entrepreneurial role in relation to the initiation and development of a sustainable business
Key environmental factors of business development
The differences between the entrepreneur and the environmental manager, and the problems faced by small growth firms in sustainable growth.

Finance for Managers: This module is designed for those who aim to achieve a basic understanding of financial management and control, and who require an understanding of finance in order to manage an organisation effectively. The programme is based in the School of Civil and Building Engineering’s Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC), one of the world’s leading education and research institutes of its kind.

- Water and Waste Engineering Principles
The aims of this module are for the student to understand the range of suitable technologies for water supply and engineering management of liquid and solid wastes in low- and middle-income countries.

- Management of Water and Sanitation
The aim of this module is to introduce the principles, concepts and key issues of managing sustainable water and environmental sanitation services for low-income consumers in developing countries.

- Water Utilities Management
The aim of this module is to better enable participants to plan for and manage urban water and sanitation services in developing countries.

- Data Collection, Analysis and Research
The aims of this module are to introduce the principles and approaches for doing research and studies on infrastructure and services in low- and middle-income countries and to prepare students to undertake the research dissertation module.

- Group Project
The aims of this module are for the student to work within a group to understand the necessary inter-relationships between different components of their programme of study; to consolidate and integrate material contained in earlier taught modules; and to learn how to work as part of a team.

- Research Dissertation
The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their degree.

- Water Source Development
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the occurrence, location, exploration, exploitation and pollution of groundwater and surface water sources.

- Wastewater Treatment
The aims of this module are for the student to understand the various stages, and unit operation and process options, for treatment of wastewaters, particularly in low- and middle-income countries; and to understand the principles for planning and design of wastewater treatment facilities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

- Integrated Water Resources Management
The aim of this module is for participants to understand the concepts used in integrated planning and management of water resources in low and middle-income countries.

- Solid Waste Management
The aim of this module is to introduce participants with available and possible options in solid waste management for low and middle income countries. To make participants familiar with the key issues for low income countries.

- Water Distribution and Drainage Systems
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the most important aspects of how to design, construct and maintain piped water distribution, drainage and sewerage systems.

- Short Project
The aim of this module is for participants to be able to undertake extended study of a subject of their own choosing which is related to their Postgraduate Programme to enable them to conduct an independent review and analysis to understand state of art issues or a topic.

Facilities

All masters students have access to our excellent laboratory facilities which include equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. There are three dedicated water laboratory staff available to help you use our equipment who are specialists in pollutant analysis, hydraulics and running continuous trials.

Practical training includes:
- Hand-pump maintenance using the largest single site collection of hand-pumps;
- latrine slab construction;
- flow measurements; and
- water quality sampling and analysis.

Field visits are made to relevant UK facilities.

WEDC has a unique sector Resource Centre with a dedicated and skilled information officer. Over 19,000 items can be searched on a customized database allowing ready access to this collection of books, series, country files, student projects, videos, journals, maps, and manufacturers' catalogues.

The Resource Centre also provides a dedicated quiet study space for WEDC students. Many items including all WEDC publications and over 2500 papers presented at 37 WEDC International Conferences are available in the open access sector knowledge base.

How you will learn

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules and optional modules which may be selected. A group case study module draws together material from across the programme and develops team working skills. The individual research project and dissertation (frequently linked to specific needs of an agency) of between 75 and 150 pages in length concludes the programme. To support your learning you will have access to our comprehensive facilities including laboratories, hand-pumps, and a dedicated Resource Centre.

- Assessment
For most modules, students are assessed by one item of coursework (two items for foundation modules) and an in-class test. The Group Project module is assessed on the basis of written documents and spoken presentations, including an individual component for the module mark. The individual Research Dissertation is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation, and this module includes an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of academic staff.

Careers and further study

Many WEDC students and alumni work for international NGOs (MSF, Oxfam, SCF, GOAL, WaterAid, etc.) and agencies (such as UNICEF), or National Governments. Graduate job titles include Sanitation Technical Manager, Water and Sanitation Consultant, Project Manager, Environmental Engineering Consultant and Civil Engineering Specialist.

Scholarships / Bursaries

Bursaries are available for self-funding international students.
The University also offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. These Scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account. You can apply for one of these scholarships once you have received an offer for a place on this programme.
