Module Details

Supply chain management is a philosophy, the implementation process and the control of this process through which different entities within a supply chain aim to streamline their activities to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of meeting final customer requirements. A variety of different techniques will be investigated, ranging from conceptual frameworks, analytical approaches, to computer-based models.

Here are the units you will study:

Supply Chain Management: This unit enable you to develop advanced skills so that you can deal with problems of supply chain management across different products, locations, and companies. The types of problems studied in this course are encountered in industry (e.g. retail, discrete or continuous production and logistics service providers) as well as in service organisations (e.g. banks, hospitals and law firms). Managers dealing with such problems are known under various titles, including production, operations, supply (chain), inventory, purchasing, distribution or logistics managers.

Logistics Modelling: Most problems arising in the fields of logistics and supply chain management have sufficient complexity and detail that they require the use of sophisticated modelling techniques. This unit looks at two of the most commonly used methodologies for modelling and solving logistics problems: simulation and heuristic techniques. In both cases a computer package is used to assist solution. The techniques will be demonstrated with a range of case studies drawn from the field of logistics including transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning and vehicle routing.

Operations Management: This unit teaches operations management techniques that are relevant to logistics. The commonly used techniques of linear and integer programming will be taught using Microsoft Excel based methods for solution. You will look at case studies covering production planning, transportation, logistics planning and supply chain configuration. You will also be taught about locating facilities such as factories, distribution centres, cross docking centres and retail outlets. The effective scheduling of labour force and machines will be demonstrated, and current state-of-the art production planning models will be covered.

Strategic Logistics: This unit looks at the field of logistics from a strategic point of view. A number of quantitative techniques for strategic decision making such as decision analysis, multi-criteria decision analysis, data envelopment analysis and queuing theory are introduced in the context of logistics applications. The topic of strategic decisions in transportation modelling is then covered. The unit is completed by the analysis of a number of case studies relating to different applications of logistics with respect to financial, environmental, societal and economic objectives.

Project (Masters Logistics): This unit allows you to conduct research into a larger scale or challenging logistics problem. The project may be practical or theoretical and may arise either from the supervisor's research interests or from your own desire to study a particular topic or situation. Typical areas of logistics in which the project will be conducted include (but are not limited to) transportation, supply chain configuration and management, warehouse design and layout, container port layout, production planning, green logistics, facility location and vehicle routing.

There has been a recent upsurge in commercial interest in the new role of "data scientist". A data scientist is a person who excels at manipulating and analysing data, particularly large data sets that don't fit easily into tabular structures (so-called "Big Data").

Why study Data Science at Dundee?

The School of Computing has been working on 'big data' and data analysis for at least five years; not only working with data but also developing new algorithms and techniques for data scientists. The School already runs the most successful Business Intelligence Masters course in the UK.

This course will be led by Professor Mark Whitehorn and Andy Cobley. Mark is an emeritus professor at the University of Dundee and also runs a successful consultancy company that specialises in BI, Data Sciences and analytics. Andy is the course organiser for both the existing BI course and the new Data Science course.

This course will enhance your employability by providing you with knowledge, skills and understanding of data science research and implementation. You will also acquire skills in the professional procedures necessary to ensure that data science research and implementation is both valid and actionable and engage with contemporary debate about the role, ethics and utility of data science in commercial and other settings.

What is the difference between Data Science and Business Intelligence?

There is clearly a huge overlap with Business Intelligence. A BI specialist will need to understand data and data analytics. However there is a bias towards understanding how data is stored in the current operational systems within an enterprise the design and the implementation of an analytical system such as a data warehouse. A data scientist will be less concerned with the construction of a data warehouse and more interested in the message the specific sets of data can deliver.

However, without some understanding of data warehouses the data scientist will find it difficult to interrogate the data for its secrets. For this reason there is overlap between the two courses.

If you already have a strong grounding in Business Intelligence and would like to upgrade your knowledge to include topics from the Data Science MSc, we offer the relevant Data Science modules either on a stand alone basis or as a PGCert.

The aim of this programme is to develop critical understanding of the management of information systems in the context of the organisational issues and challenges that impact on their development and application.


Enterprise Modelling, which cultivates skills and knowledge related to business, conceptual and software modelling. Example topics of study include different paradigms for modelling (including business services, processes and objects), techniques for modelling the business domain and business behaviour, the relationship between business modelling and software modelling and the use of the Unified Modelling Language (UML).

Systems in Context, which aims to develop a critical understanding of information and information systems and the role that each plays in the context of the modern working environment and society. Example topics of study include: concepts of 'information' and 'information systems', information revolutions and their impact, approaches to the implementation and use of information systems in modern working environments.

Research Method, which introduced methods of data collection and analysis when conducting empirical research. This research can take place in an organisational setting. Both in the private or the public sector. This module is essential preparation for the dissertation.

Organisational Change and Business Improvement, which aims to develop a reflective understanding, alongside the knowledge and skills necessary to the implementation of new procedures or technologies intended to realign an organization with the changing demands of its business environment (or to capitalise on business opportunities). Example topics of study include: understanding and justifying change, change management, managing technology risks, ethical issues in change.

ICTs and Strategic Change, which aims to develop a critical awareness of the central issues and challenges in strategic approaches to information systems. Example topics of study include the nature of strategic planning and its key components, the relationship of IS/IT strategy to organisational aims and strategy, the assumptions of traditional planning approaches to strategic ICT adoption and state-of-the-art responses to issues and challenges.

Dissertation

In addition, you will be asked to produce a dissertation, which is an opportunity to build expertise in a more focused area that is of interest to you and which you may want to specialise in. The dissertation not only showcases your project management and subject specific skills to potential employers, but also serves as valuable experience and a solid building block for those wishing to pursue a PhD, on completion of their MSc. Your work will be individually supervised by a member of academic staff. Mohammad is responsible for the strategic leadership of the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology,having joined our University in June 2011 from the University of East London. A well published researcher, with over 50 refereed conference and Journal publications, his research profile includes many funded research programmes including JISC and EU FP7 projects. Mohammad’s first degree was in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. He then went on to complete a PhD in the 'Design, Development and Evaluation of Multimedia Based Learning Systems' at Kingston University. In 1989 he set up one of the UK's first multimedia PC companies, 'Systems 2000'.

This course takes an integrated approach to the visual world, paying as much attention to the ‘decorative’ arts – furniture, silver, ceramics, textiles and costume – as to the ‘fine’ arts of painting and sculpture. Students are taught both the visual skills with which to analyse works of art and the art historical knowledge with which to contextualize them. Teaching methods focus on object-based study and regular visits to Christie’s salerooms, museums and private collections are arranged accordingly. Students also attend lectures by faculty and visiting experts and participate in student-led seminars. Frequent trips to sites in the UK and abroad are also organized. Considerable attention is given to working in the art world and professionals employed in various different fields – from dealing, insurance and marketing to curating, publishing and set design – are invited to introduce students to the wide range of job opportunities that exist for them. Written assignments take the form of essays, reports, reviews and catalogue entries in order to help students apply their art historical knowledge in a professional context.

Christie’s Education is the first British institution to offer a Master’s programme devoted exclusively to Chinese art. While acquiring experience in object analysis, you will explore archaeological and historical contexts and the multiple narratives in the story of Chinese art. Starting from the Neolithic and Bronze Age art, the course covers pottery, bronze, lacquer, silk and jade, then examines Buddhism from the Han dynasty onwards, to the global reach of the ‘Silk Road’ in the Tang dynasty. Extensive treatment of artistic production during late imperial China—from the ’golden age’ of the Song dynasty to the High Qing—range through a variety of media such architecture, painting, printing, ceramics and luxury goods. The course also explores cultural developments from the 19th to the 21st century, when intensified contact with foreigners generated new practices, functions and meanings in Chinese art.

Crucially, the course will propel you into Chinese art-world practice and introduce you to the curators, scholars, artists, and dealers who shape the discipline. You will gain exposure to historical and current trends in the circulation of art within China and abroad, historically and to the present day. This course offers both hands on knowledge and on up to date theoretical background. Modules

Advanced Software Engineering (20 Credits)
This module investigates the knowledge and skills you will require to develop quality software systems including contemporary methodologies and techniques for version control, testing and documentation. Content include: Test-driven development tools and techniques. Aspect-oriented software development, Agile SE paradigms, methods, Extreme Programming methods (XP).

Project Management (20 Credits)
Develop your understanding of key project management concepts - primarily the planning, organisation and control of resources in order to move a specific task, event or project toward completion.

Dissertation (40 Credits)
The dissertation / Masters project aims to provide an opportunity for you to engage in research and advanced scholarship in a subject area that is appropriate to your course but of your own choosing.

Research Practice (20 Credits)
This module aims to develop your awareness of the methods and skills which are required in order to carry out Masters level research successfully, and to reflect critically on your own development in the context of your chosen programme of study.

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) (20 Credits)
SOA is a software development paradigm specifically developed for emerging markets in cloud computing and web services. This involves analysing, designing, and managing solutions for SOA. This course will also have opportunity to gain real world certification from SOA systems who is one of the world expertise in this area. Content include: SOA concepts, technology, and design. Web services paradigms, SOA analysis, design, and implementation strategies.

Software Components and Architectures (20 Credits)
Software applications are becoming increasingly complex and their target platforms more diverse. The ability to manage such complexity is essential. This module develops your skills in Components Based Software Engineering (CBSE), in particular modelling techniques, analysing system complexity, and applying best practice design principles.

Software & Systems (20 Credits)
You'll examine the techniques and technologies used in low level systems programming. You'll learn to apply development approaches which are 'core' to the functionality of a modern day computer system.
