Course overview

The PGCE (PCET) is a professional teacher education programme that will qualify you to teach in the post-compulsory education and training sector which includes sixth form colleges, further education colleges, vocational training and adult education.

The PGCE (PCET) is popular with graduates whose degree subjects are not widely taught in secondary schools, such as sports science, health and social care, psychology and dance. Our course equips you to educate adults and young people, sharing your knowledge and helping others fulfil their potential.

The full-time pre-service PGCE (PCET) is a robust, stable and popular provision with a great reputation. The programme benefits from its direct link to SUNCETT, one of the only 10 Centres for Excellence in this Sector. The programme is directly informed by both the national and international education research and development work of the team.

This pre-service course is for graduates who don’t have previous experience of teaching. If you are already employed in the PCET sector, we also offer an in-service part-time PGCE (PCET). The University, through its dedicated Placement Office, will help to arrange a minimum of 100-hours teaching practice placement in the Learning and Skills sector. This is a valuable opportunity to design, deliver, assess and evaluate teaching and learning in the sector, under the guidance of a mentor in your subject specialist area.

Please note you will be expected to pay travel and subsistence costs relating to placements.

According to the 2015 Ofsted inspection, “the training of good-quality Further Education and skills teachers enables them to make a valued contribution to the colleges and settings in which they work”.

In addition, there is a specialist pathway for graduates wanting to teach English to adults. It would prepare you to teach English at a range of levels to learners in diverse settings such as Further Education colleges, adult and community education and offender learning. For some English-pathway students, bursaries may be available. Bursaries are reviewed by the government on an annual basis.

Teaching and assessment

We use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods which include lectures, seminars, tutorials, directed learning and group work, as well as a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice placement. In each module, we encourage you to reflect upon your initial and continuing professional development.

The programme is led by a highly qualified team who are research active and lead on a number of national sector research projects. According to the Ofsted (2015) report, “in university-based training, trainees benefit from highly qualified research leaders in further education who enable trainees to focus on academic rigour to improve the practice of teaching”.

On successful completion of the course you will have a PGCE PCET, the full award for teaching in the post-compulsory education and training sector. CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING

For teachers undertaking a more limited teaching role in any of the further education and skills sector institutions. The short course consists of two x 20 credit modules at level 4 and you may use this short course as credit should you decide to join the Diploma course at a later stage

Duration: short course, variable to suit partner colleges but usually three hours per week over two or three terms.

DIPLOMA/ProfGCE IN EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Designed to meet the needs of teachers in a substantial role in further and/or adult and community education, trainers in the public and private sector as well as those working with 14­19 year olds in schools, academies and vocational settings.

The course consists of six modules taken over two years or a one year fast track option is available at one of our partner colleges. Successful completion allows you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

Duration: modular over one year full­time with six hours per week tuition in class or two years part­time usually three hours per week tuition in class; plus self-study time and teaching time.

SPECIALIST PATHWAYS IN ENGLISH, MATHEMATICS AND TEACHING LEARNERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

For teachers of English (ESOL, literacy, functional skills) or maths (numeracy, functional skills) or working with learners with special needs, the Diploma, ProfGCE, Certificate and Award can also be taken as subject specialist qualifications.

To join the pathway qualification in the Certificate or Diploma, you need to have 50% of your teaching in the specific subject specialism. You will attend two modules in a subject specialist group at one of our partner colleges and benefit from working with subject specialists as well as learning about specific pedagogy for your subject.

QUALIFIED TEACHER STATUS LEARNING AND SKILLS

These teaching qualifications do not automatically confer ‘Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills’ (QTLS), so you will need to apply for this status post qualification. The process is currently under review so please check the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) website for current guidance.

Format

You will be given access to a wide range of learning and teaching strategies. Modules may include seminars, lectures and group discussions and projects, with many utilising individual and peer presentation format.

Given that the course is primarily for staff already working in the further education and skills sector, maximum use of student experience and expertise is made, including student led sessions aimed at sharing examples of good practice with colleagues.

Modules include self-directed study activities, investigations and e-­based learning.

You will be required to have a minimum of 100 hours teaching for the Diploma/ProfGCE.

For the Diploma/PGCE students are required to undertake eight teaching observations. These provide the opportunity for you to apply your knowledge and understanding, to improve subject specialist teaching and to receive practical advice.

Assessment

Assessments for each module are based on observations of teaching practice, individual reflections, entries in a progress log and academic essays/assignments.

- Professional Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) PCET

The PGCE PCET is aimed at graduates who want to teach in their degree subject or graduates with a further qualification in the subject area in which they aim to teach. They will also be teaching or actively seeking teaching in the post-compulsory sector of education and training. Students do not need GCSE Maths or English to apply for this course.

The PCE PCET is aimed at students with a Level 3 qualification (NVQ3, OCN 3, A Level equivalence) preferably in the subject they are teaching or want to teach. The programme is for students who have experience in their subject areas and who wish to further their experience by teaching in the PCET or lifelong learning sector. Students do not need GCSE Maths or English to apply for this course.

Graduate and non-graduate entrants will follow the same learning pattern but, in compliance with the requirements of QAA, be taught at the differentiated levels for undergraduate study in Year 2.

- Prepare to Teach
The Preparing to teach 10 week taster course is for students with a Level 3 qualification who do not wish to undertake a two-year programme of study but who want to teach. This is an equivalence of Module 1 of the PGCE or PCE. Students would then be exempt from this module should they decide to apply for the PGCE or PCE at a later date.

The Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET) sector is an area of growing importance in a world of rapidly evolving economic and social change. As individuals face the need to upgrade their skills in order to meet the requires on the world of work, educators in the Post 16 sector have a key role to play in helping them to achieve their learning goals

The Cardiff Met PCET programmes have been devised to introduce you to teaching in the post compulsory education and training (PCET) sector including tertiary, further and higher education, adult and community education, vocational and 14- 19 education as well as training in the private sector or work-based learning environments. These two-year part time programmes will engage you in both academic and practical assignments.

The ethos of the programme is predicated upon student-centred learning which includes the interchange ability of staff/student roles, the pooling of intellectual resources and experiences and the structured opportunities for skills-sharing.

The general aim of the programmes is to produce teachers or trainers who can demonstrate competence across the range of roles and tasks related to the design, delivery, management and evaluation of learning. Students will leave the programme equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge that underpin the performance of those tasks expected of the professional educator or trainer in the post-compulsory sector.

The programme aims to provide a high quality and professionally appropriate experience that offers the opportunity for students to develop their abilities to plan and undertake projects related to practice; further to link their practice to theory in a critical and evaluative way. It aims to equip students with the skills to engage with the concept of reflective practice and to select areas of professional relevance for their study.

The overall aim is to create 'reflective practitioners'.

Learning & Teaching

The programme team recognises that adult learners bring with them experiences which can be used as a resource for learning. Consequently formal lectures are not a feature of this programme. We expect all sessions to involve students actively participating in their learning.

The overall emphasis will be on working together and effectively utilising the experiences and skills that the individual learners bring to the group. This student-centred approach allows students to take responsibility for their own learning. Tutors are seen as facilitators of learning, providing resources, supporting, stimulating and challenging where appropriate.

To this end the teaching methods on the programme will include:

Input from tutors. These can be useful in providing new or up-to-date information to larger groups provided there is an ongoing opportunity for questioning and participation. They will be used sparingly on the programme to generate interest in new subjects and provide information for future discussion, analysis and evaluation.

Small group work. This will be one of the key strategies utilised. The major aim of these activities will be to develop skills relating to thinking, discussion and the presentation of information. Students will be able to practise their communication skills, listen to other group members, support weaker peers and observe group dynamics in action. They will have extensive opportunities to develop their presentation skills in a safe environment and learn how to give encouraging and constructive feedback to their colleagues. Methods utilised will include:
- Ice-breaking exercises
- Team-building exercises
- Workshops
- Buzz groups and brainstorming
- Simulations
- Case-studies
- Role plays

Seminars. These will be led by programme members and will allow them to further develop their presentation and delivery skills. They will be designed to allow group members to explore issues relating to their own institutional settings or their academic specialisms.

Individualised learning periods. Directed self-study allowing programme members to learn at their own pace outside the framework of class activities. The number of hours of self-study varies for each student and it would be worth discussing this with your personal tutor at the start of the year.

Tutorials. Group members will meet with their individual tutors at regular intervals to reflect on their learning experiences, share concerns and problems and set learning targets.

Moodle is Cardiff Met’s virtual learning environment and you will be able to use this to access materials/information relating to the programme from a networked PC. Moodle will also be used for academic and social online discussion forum, blog discussions and for online learning resources.

Assessment

You may be assessed by a combination of assessment methods appropriate to the PGCE and PCE programme levels and may include:
- Written assessments (WRIT) such as reports, self-reflections, analytical documents, case studies, online blogs, peer assessments, essays;

- Presentations (PRES) and Microteaching sessions which may be individual and/or group; seminar; (non)-interactive; with audience;

- Practicals (PRAC) such as individual and/or group; coaching; mentoring;; performance;

- Portfolio (PORT) that includes a collection of evidence, frequently including a contextual statement; poster; website;

- Placements (PLAC) such as a fieldwork placement; school placement; experiencing the world of work.

The programme is continually assessed through module assignments and two hundred hours of supervised teaching experience to include 130 hours of direct teaching over the two years.

Students will undertake four observed teaching hours in Year 1 and four in Year 2. Each of these will require written preparation and also a self-evaluation report following the observation.

Employability & Careers

The PGCE and PCE PCET will qualify you to teach in Further and Higher Education, youth, adult and community education, 14- 19 sector, work-based education, training in HMForces, prison, industry and commercial training departments.

Students who have completed this course have gone on to part or full-time teaching in the post compulsory sector of education and training, usually teaching their subject and other subject related areas. All graduates leaving the course are signposted to Cardiff County Council and Cardiff Met’s Widening Access department as potential adult education tutors for outreach and summer school activities. .Some students are offered teaching opportunities by their mentor once they have graduated.

​Progression Routes:
Non-graduates successfully completing the PCE (PCET) will gain 120 credits at levels 4 and 5. Students would be able to progress on to a degree programme in their specific subject discipline.

Graduates completing the PGCE (PCET) will gain 120 credits at levels 4, 5 and 6. Students can then progress onto Masters programmes within their particular subject area.

About this degree

This programme will give students critical insight into a range of theories, perspectives and approaches for studying policies and practices in professional education and training and how they might apply these in their workplace. It will develop understanding of conceptual and analytical frameworks in professional education and training and how they can be used to develop expertise.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of two core modules (60 credits), and either two optional modules (60 credits), and a dissertation (60 credits), or three optional modules (90 credits) and a report (30 credits).

You will develop your skills as a reflective practitioner in all your teaching / training roles and be supported through a process of individual learning planning.

You will cover the following aspects of teaching and learning in the post-compulsory sector:

Teaching and learning

All tutors demonstrate good practice in delivery and assessment tasks and are role models for participants. Sessions will include lectures, group work, role plays, case studies, syndicate groups and one-to-one tutorials.

Several different people will observe you in your professional context. You will be required to present individually to your peer group, work collaboratively with your peers and participate in group presentations. Other methods used are:

This course consists of three modules:

- Professionalism in the Lifelong Learning Sector
You will have the opportunity to examine in depth the context of professional practice in the Lifelong Learning Sector and to relate it to your own values and experience. You will consider the historical backgrounds of the sector and how these, along with recent initiatives, have shaped current understandings of professional identity and practice. You will examine the pressures for professional status and recognition for teachers in the sector, the drives for regulation and subsequent deregulation.

You will be encouraged to engage with a range of critical theoretical perspectives which will enable you to interrogate ideologies which operate through the discourse of 'professionalism' and to develop your own viewpoint.

The module comes together around two interlinked questions:
1. What is a professional identity?
2. How is this related to practice and the disciplinary regimes which shape the activity and subjectivity of the practitioner?

- Pedagogy in the Lifelong Learning Sector
You will focus on pedagogy in the FE context with the aim of expanding the repertoire of approaches to teaching and learning for FE professionals. This is informed by a range of theories of learning and models of teaching. You will explore key issues and challenges raised by the complex and fast changing environment of FE.

For example:
- Definitions of pedagogy and its role in effective teaching and learning with comparisons of different international approaches to pedagogical approaches.
- The importance of 'knowledge' in pedagogical practice
- A critical analysis of the way that theories of learning - behaviorist, cognitivist, constructivist and humanist inform pedagogical choice and practice.
- A critical analysis of a range of models of learning and their appropriateness to the FE context including experiential, inductive and problem based.
- Consideration of the theory of analogy and its place in FE teaching and learning.
- The role of technology in changing pedagogical approaches.
- The academic divide, vocational pedagogy and communities of practice and changing localities for pedagogy.

- Investigating practice
You will have an opportunity to develop an inquiry related to your own practice which can be assessed through either a report or a portfolio of work. This might include the development of pedagogical approaches or curriculum materials, or investigations into the achievement levels or opportunities provided for particular groups of learners. It could also include the development of professional practice through shadowing others or engaging in collaborative work across organisations. The syllabus will be determined by the focus of the inquiries selected by yourself adopting a 'learning set' approach.

This course is suitable for applicants with subject experience from a wide variety of areas and industries. It leads to a teaching qualification in the post-compulsory education sector, which may also be used to teach in schools. Those holding a degree in the subject they wish to teach will take the PGCE or ProfGCE, and those with vocational qualifications and/or experience will take the Cert Ed.

The awards meet the national professional standards, determined by the Learning Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and allow you to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) when you have completed your course. QTLS has been recognised as equivalent to QTS allowing holders to work in secondary schools.

We equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for the demanding role of teacher / lecturer. The course is endorsed within the national framework for the sector and constitutes the University's equivalent of the Diploma in Education and Training.

These four awards are also offered with subject specialist pathways in Mathematics and Numeracy, and English and Literacy. You may be eligible for a training bursary if you study one of these specialist pathways.

What will I study?

The aims of the course are to prepare students to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and learning activities in the post-compulsory education sector and to help students to develop appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes. It equips students with an ability to reflect upon and learn from their professional practice and build students' confidence in their ability to perform their professional roles whilst creating a sound foundation for further professional and career development.

The teaching experience in partner colleges / centres is central to the course. You will be supported throughout the experience by a mentor who specialises in your subject area, giving you the confidence to take your industry experience into the classroom.

All students follow a course of study and research which covers an introduction to post-compulsory education; curriculum issues, particularly around inclusive practice; enterprise and quality; principles of learning and the characteristics of the post-14 learner; planning for learning and methods of teaching and assessment. Fully integrated into this course is a structured and supervised practical teaching component in one of our partner institutions.

The course consists of four modules:

1. Learning and Teaching: in Post-Compulsory Education and Training
2. Learning and Teaching: the Professional Tutor
3. Learning and Teaching: the Subject Specialist and Wider Context
4. Independent Study: Post-Compulsory Education and Training.

On the part-time pre-service programme, two modules are completed in Year One and two in Year Two.

What will I teach?

This course equips you with the skills required to teach, but not subject-specific knowledge. Schools and colleges have a wide curriculum and as long as we can find you an appropriate placement, we can accept you to train for any subject you have the relevant experience to teach.

However, two specialist study pathways are also available, with generous government bursaries to support your study:

1. English and Literacy
2. Mathematics and Numeracy.

You apply for the generic PGCE Post-Compulsory Education and Training course and can choose to specialise once you start the course if you have the appropriate subject background.

Teaching experience

We will only accept students if we believe we can provide a relevant placement opportunity, or if you have an appropriate agreed placement arranged prior to applying.

Full-time study

There are two full-time blocks of teaching practice - six weeks in the second half of the autumn term and ten weeks in the spring / summer terms. In addition, course students will spend one day a week in their host college early in the autumn term, and two days a week in January and February. During their time in the host college students are supported by a mentor - a member of staff from that college who is a specialist in the student's subject area.

Part-time study

Teaching practice is undertaken one day a week over the duration of the programme. During their time in the host college/centre students are supported by a mentor - a member of staff from that centre who is a specialist in the student's subject area. University sessions are held one day a week, in the morning, with directed private study activities being planned for the afternoon. This path is ideal for students who wish to work or have other commitments whilst on the course.

The Certificate in Education (CertEd) and Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) are professional qualifications for people teaching in further education colleges, sixth form colleges, adult education, higher education, and a wide range of other training and educational settings that are outside the schools sector.
The courses are available to graduates and to non-graduates with appropriate vocational qualifications. The courses can be studied full-time (Ipswich and Bury Campus only), part-time or on a flexible basis. The two year part-time course will interest teachers and trainers who are already in full or part-time employment. Attendance on this course is one evening or one morning or afternoon per week.

The full-time course will benefit those who wish to obtain a teaching qualification before seeking employment. The full-time mode of study assumes no teaching experience and participants are provided with a supervised teaching placement (subject to availability). The course is designed to develop a range of skills and knowledge required of a professional teacher in a post-compulsory environment. The course places a significant emphasis on participants developing the appropriate skills and knowledge they require to meet the needs of the learner. The fundamental principles of practice are underpinned by reference to theoretical perspectives, thus encouraging participants to effectively link theory to practice. Successful completion of the course is determined by continuous assessment.

The course is designed to encourage students to achieve the aims through engaging in activities which are directly related to their own teaching context. Students are assessed through a mixture of essays, reports, assignments and practical tasks as appropriate for the learning outcomes of each individual module. It is a requirement that all students pass the practical teaching elements of the course. Participants will be observed teaching in the normal teaching context and formally assessed a number of times throughout the programme.

What different entry requirements are there depending on the route I choose to take?

Part-time in-service route
All applicants on the two year part-time route must have access to teaching opportunities in a post-compulsory environment and have sufficient experience on which to be assessed. This must be a minimum of 75 teaching hours per academic year. Students will be asked to identify a mentor from within their organisation to assist the development of subject-specific teaching skills.
Full-time pre-service route
Entry to this course depends upon the areas of work or subject area the candidate intends to teach. Recruitment will depend upon the availability of an appropriate supervised teaching practice placement. Training bursaries may be available to support students in designated shortage subject areas.

Teaching and assessment

We use a variety of teaching and learning methods that include visits to school and business, workshops with teachers. There will also be an overnight residential offered. There are group lectures, seminars, tutorials, project work and group work as well as placements and work-based learning.

Assessment methods include written work, evidence profiles and assessment of your teaching practice. All modules on the programme are individual assessments.

The University of Sunderland has excellent facilities on-campus and strong links with schools and colleges in the area.

This course is based on the banks of the River Wear at The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. The programme offers a deep understanding of education in primary care and equips you to succeed in learning and teaching at a wide range of levels and primary care disciplines, as demonstrated by our alumni.

All facilitators on the programme are GP trainers, undergraduate tutors or training programme directors. You’ll benefit from links with current practitioners and expert researchers working at the Academic Unit of Primary Care at the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. Course content

You’ll study four modules, all focused on primary care. Each module consists of two teaching days alongside online activities and discussions.

You’ll reflect on education in primary care, critically examine key aspects of your work and gain skills and ideas for your own development and the development of others. Students also have the opportunity to critically evaluate current research and contribute to the evidence base in education in primary healthcare.

The programme aims to develop the skills to implement and evaluate a curriculum, as well as critically evaluate consultation models and personal consultation skills. This is the only programme approved by Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber that offers teaching on consultation skills.

Learning and teaching

The programme is taught through a blended learning approach, combining face-to-face learning (at teaching days) with online activities.

Teaching is mostly in small groups with a facilitator, ensuring a personalised learning approach. You’ll learn through lectures, practical classes, tutorials, seminars and supervised research projects. We make extensive use of IT and a wide range of materials is available to enable you to study at your own pace and to enhance and extend on the material taught formally. Besides access to online materials, the Virtual Learning Environment offers continued peer and tutor support.

Assessment

Assessment for all four modules is through written assignments, submitted approximately six weeks after the end of the module.

This programme is one of the steps in the process to become a GP trainer with Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber. Many successful local educators have completed this programme.

Both face-to-face (on campus or on college based sites) sessions and a variety of online technologies are used to achieve the overall aims of the programme.

The Teaching Qualification in Further Education (TQFE) is designed to meet the needs of the contemporary Scottish Further Education (FE) sector. The content is based on the professional standards for FE staff as laid down by the Scottish Government and is fully accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). The course is suitable for:

In-service: Lecturers currently working in Further Education colleges
Individuals who work in other education and training contexts in post-compulsory education

Structure and content

You will complete three of the following modules:

Learner Identity and Diversity - Core module
The broad purpose of the module is that the students, employed as lecturers in Further Education colleges in Scotland (PG), will gain deeper and more critical understanding of their role and practices in the support and guidance of their students and in learning support. To this end the module aims to develop student understanding of the significance of learner identity in engagement in learning, to identify and critically assess the lecturers’ role and practices in support and guidance and learning support to particular students and groups, and to research and critically evaluate current institutional and wider practices, policies and research regarding support and guidance and learning support.

Teaching and Assessment - Core module
In this postgraduate module students encounter and critically examine some of the main theories of learning, teaching and assessment. Key to the work is the idea that practice can be informed by reflection, engagement with colleagues, with the practice setting and, importantly, through relating theory to the practice to teaching and assessing learners. This module focuses on the planning and enactment of a research-informed innovation in practice.

Professional Practice - Optional module
The module aims to enable students to critically examine their role as a vocational educator in further education and to identify areas of their practice that could be changed to improve the learning experiences of their students. Students will be encouraged to examine various debates about professionalism within further education and the implications of these debates for their own professional practice. The module will also introduce students to different frameworks of quality enhancement within further education and students will be supported in critically examining how these frameworks can enhance or hinder their professional practice. The final part of the module will focus on different approaches to professional learning with a particular emphasis on networked professional learning communities.

Professional Experiential Learning - Optional module
Those students who successfully complete the module will be expected to be able to undertake a self-directed study of a chosen aspect of their professional context/practice in a scholarly manner informed by appropriate literature. The outcomes from the study will be of benefit to the local institution, TQFE peers and the student themselves. As a consequence of completing this module students will have developed independent thinking skills, the ability to identify and frame in an appropriate way issues within their professional context/practice that are of particular relevance to them and to communicate with peers and tutors clearly and effectively about their study.

Delivery and assessment

The course is taught using a combination of lectures, seminars and materials made available via Succeed, the University of Stirling's chosen online learning environment.

The attendance requirement for most modules is two days per module, with all course materials available online in advance. Pre-service students are required to do additional work both on campus and in their college placement.

Three formal assignments are required (where a student has not been granted any exemptions) each of 3,000 words. Where the first submission is graded as a fail one resubmission attempt is allowed. Where the resubmission is graded as a fail the student must retake the module. The pass mark for postgraduate work is: 50%

A student is permitted a maximum of five assessment attempts (3 module registrations to include assessment only) per module.

In addition to the formal written assignments students are required to be observed teaching on two separate occasions and to complete a written reflective review of the observed lesson. One of the observations may be undertaken by suitably qualified college based staff.
