Do you have an eye for design? Would you like to help influence the future of visual communications? Southampton Solent University’s MA Visual Communication programme is ideally suited to students who wish to better understand the academic theory that underpins a range of visual mediums.

- Students study the essential academic theories that seek to explain how we understand visual messages.
- The teaching team maintain strong links with industry, providing students with the chance to participate in live briefs, networking events, and guest lectures.

Businesses of all types and sizes make use of creative individuals to take corporate message and translate them into creative outputs that the public can enjoy and understand.

The programme -

This intensive master’s degree helps students to improve their creative skills and build a solid understanding of visual communications theory. The curriculum covers the latest innovations in visual practice, examining the way technological and cultural changes contributed to contemporary academic thinking.

Topics of study include editorial design; art direction; interactive multimedia; information design; image creation; illustration; typographic design; print-making and photographic technique. Students may have workshop sessions with the letterpress, screen-printing, etching and relief printing facilities, as well as the wet darkroom and photo studio. Depending on their creative background, graduates will be well prepared for a range of careers in the creative industries.

Critical research papers and final master’s projects are supported by the University’s expanding research base, encouraging students to make an innovative contribution to visual communication academia.

To help with creative projects and portfolio documentation, Southampton Solent provides a comprehensive media loans scheme. This scheme gives students free access to high-end photographic equipment and accessories.

Visual communication students have the chance to enter major industry awards schemes including those from D&AD and the Royal Society of the Arts. Work-orientated assignments will be offered alongside appropriate live projects from local and national organisations. - Visual Communication Practice: Visual communication practice and specialisms such as editorial design, interactive multimedia, information design, image creation, book design and typographic design. - Web Design: The advantages and limitations of web design and its delivery across a range of devices, from desktop to mobile.
- Project Development: Developing the appropriate graphic design language to apply to your research findings.
- Research Methods:A précis of an article, a critical commentary of two book reviews, your own book review and a proposal for your critical research paper, with an annotated bibliography.
- Critical Research Paper: You’ll research and present an individual seminar, supported by a critical research paper which demonstrates an in-depth, comprehensive and detailed knowledge of your chosen area.
vMaster’s Project: On this final project you’ll bring all your skills together to design, execute and present an individually demanding piece of work that demonstrates systematic and in-depth understanding of your particular discipline of study.

Strategy & Planning for Digital and Social Media Communications
This unit is assessed through one piece of coursework. You are required to develop a digital marketing strategy and plan for an organisation of your choice. The digital skills gap is widely recognised as a major barrier to organisations maximising the benefits of successful digital marketing. The unit takes a detailed view of developing a digital and social media communications strategy and plan. Learn from digital marketing specialists – each with active practitioner experience in their fields, such as email marketing, search, social media, mobile. You will also work on live briefs – utilising the skills you develop through the unit content.

Investigating Business Practice
This unit involves working with a client on a live brief with other students. This will develop your communication skills, ability to work with others (students and clients), and will require some independent work to meet the requirements of the brief. The brief is normally an advertising issue that needs addressing for an organisation.

Research Methods
This unit covers a range of areas. Initially the focus is on developing your study skills, especially the ability to research and critique journal articles. You will be learning about research philosophy, qualitative and quantitative research methods in order to prepare you for your dissertation. Tutorial activities such as being part of a focus group will give you first-hand experience of the difficulties involved in undertaking primary research.

Dissertation
You will complete an outline topic form in order for a supervisor to be allocated. With the help of your supervisor you will submit initially a research proposal, which is marked and worth 15% of your overall grade for the unit. Once this has been approved you will continue to work under the guidance of your supervisor and complete a 12-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice, relating to advertising (worth 85% of your overall grade for this unit). This will be submitted in September at the end of your course.

The optional Visual and Material Culture Track (VMC) within the Master of Art in Global Communications (MAGC) offers an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural consideration of the increasing importance of visuality and interactivity in today’s world.

Students acquire in-depth knowledge of visual theories, contexts, and practices and their relationship to the global media—and develop critical thinking about the cultural forces behind visuality as a communicative practice.

Vision and visuality: more than meets the eye

Social, political, and economic conditions shape seeing and the production of objects and events for visual consumption. Reaching beyond traditional understandings of media and communication, we examine such things as imaging systems, screen practices, data graphics, architecture, tourism, performance, gaming, body ornamentation, race, gender, and sexuality—and all of these on both a global scale and within regional traditions.

Incorporating non-Western contributions to the field, this track combines a critical approach to theoretical and scientific understandings of vision and visuality with a rigorous consideration of the functions of the viewer, object, and environment in specific circumstances.

Ideal candidates—and outcomes

Students pursuing this track will likely have studied or worked in art, anthropology, cultural studies, psychology, design, publishing, marketing, image-based journalism or film—or be interested in pursuing careers in those fields.

The VMC track prepares students for professional careers in communications or further graduate study.

Structure of the specialized track

As in the regular MA in Global Communications program, coursework can be completed in three semesters, including the summer. The length of the internship or thesis may vary, however—many students choose to take additional time for these components.

The program requirements for the MAGC Visual and Material Culture Track are as follows:

Fashion design, wholesaling and retailing have grown dramatically in the last five years, with 10,000 fashion-related jobs. Employment in the wholesale and retail trade grew by 34.5 per cent or 13,000 jobs in the last five years.

The landscape of visual effects is changing at a lightning speed. The technological advances over the last decade have brought us fast communication links that are enabling global, cloud-based and remote workflow, opening the possibilities of a looser, more flexible network of artists based in different countries creatively collaborating on visual effects projects. This, combined with the ever increasing demand for both film and video content means that there is a growing need not just for VFX artists but also VFX producers, post-production coordinators and project managers that have a deep understanding of the whole workflow in the creation of visual effects and the post-production in general.

Ravensbourne’s course reflects these changes and follows Skillset guidance on the entry skills required to meet VFX industry’s needs that encompass not only specialised industry skills but also soft skills required for a successful career in the VFX and post-production industry be it in the creative or project management spectrum.

In addition six modules in the form of group tutorials are given on the whole process in the creation of VFX including pre-production meetings, VFX acquisition, scheduling, budgeting, organisation and shoot supervision. These modules also place VFX in the wider context of post-production and give an overview of the post-production workflow from brief to delivery that includes transcoding, editing and deliverables.

Ravensbourne gives students access to all the necessary equipment, including cameras, the use of green screen studios with complete lighting rigs and the relevant software.

1. Technology Issues – Within the Technology Issues unit, students will engage with 3 5-week project cycles that will allow them to explore CG, compositing and finishing. These units are structured to encourage students to engage collaboratively with fellow students.

2. Business and Innovation – Taught during the term prior to the Major Project Unit this unit helps students develop and understanding of business and innovative practices in the creative industries. It supports visual effects students in turning their ideas and skills into viable market propositions and long term business plans.

3. Research Process – This unit provides the grounding for research and development skills needed for students’ individual projects.

4. Concept and Prototyping – allows students to further develop their skills, to identify a specialist area related to visual effects and to pursue a single line of inquiry, idea or theory embedded in visual effects and research and develop (investigate, challenge and test) the concept.

5. Major project - The Major Project represents the culmination of students’ investigation and the final stage of the research strategy. This is a substantial piece of self-managed work that is underpinned by advanced practice-based methodologies and processes.

All postgraduate courses at Ravensbourne provide students with the opportunity to develop advanced skills in the conceptualisation and practical realisation of innovative creative projects in their discipline area and provide them with the entrepreneurial skills to realise their commercial potential. These courses share the following common aims:

- to develop advanced creative practitioners with the potential to originate, innovate or influence practice in their discipline area;

- to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the core principles and technology underpinning their creative project and the theoretical frameworks within which to locate it;

- to underpin students’ creative practice with the entrepreneurial skills and business awareness necessary to turn concepts into commercially viable realities;

- to develop students’ skills in independent learning, self-reflection and research skills necessary to sustain advanced creative practice and scholarship;

- to offer a stimulating environment for postgraduate students which is both supportive and flexible in relation to their learning needs and a creative space in which to incubate their ideas.
