The factors affecting the wider environment are constantly increasing and range from agriculture and forestry to recreation, urban development and population growth. These in turn have knock-on effects such as climate change, water and food shortages, habitat and species loss and the impact of non-native species.

One of the areas where these factors come together is in the field of countryside management where the public use of the countryside interacts with professional land managers and can result in conflict.

In the context of this programme and the degree programme from which it has developed the term countryside management encompasses a broad range of topics and land uses ranging from conservation management to rural land use planning and interpretation to land use history.

Students are expected to have a broad knowledge of how the countryside that we see around us has developed in a historical context and how this relates to factors such as climate, ecology and soils. This in turn helps to determine current land use practice whether it be for agriculture or forestry, conservation management or recreation.

Inevitably these land uses are interlinked in complex ways and the countryside manager is expected to be able to identify the potential conflicts and to arrive at appropriate management options.

Of course there is rarely a simple answer in such situations and the resulting decisions have to be based on an understanding of the competing claims and an awareness of how to work with individuals, interest groups and communities to ensure that stakeholders' views have been taken into account.

Course Content

There are eight taught modules providing for the development of a range of technical, practical and professional skills. Residential study weekends are also used as a vital tool in delivering some of the practical aspects of the course.
In the modules an element of student choice is often built in through the use of essay and other course work topics that cover areas of potential interest. The modules will be of value individually to those in employment who are looking for Continuing Professional Development.

Taught modules are:

Planning and the Legal Framework

This module will provide a background to the legislation and policy framework within which the countryside is managed. This will include planning, biodiversity and landscape and will focus on the role of EIA and SEA. The planning system is prone to conflicts between interest groups and students will look at case studies that highlight some of the main issues that arise.

Habitat and Species Management

Habitats and species have been the subject of management for centuries but only comparatively recently has there been a focus on their management for conservation reasons. In practice species management relies on appropriate habitat management although there are times when more specific prescriptions are appropriate. This module will look at management through a number of case studies which will be examined in detail. The case studies will include both desk studies and field visits and students will be encouraged to research appropriate examples in their own areas.

Visitor Management

Visitor management is a crucial part of countryside management and should be integrated into area and site management plans. An understanding of visitor management and the opportunities for education, interpretation and marketing, is a requirement for senior countryside managers. Students will look at the full range of visitor management issues from visitor profiles and motivations to site design and the impacts on wildlife and the wider environment.

Species Identification and Familiarity

The ability to accurately identify a range of species is crucial to aid in species conservation and to properly evaluate an area for its biodiversity. Central to species identification is the use of field keys and identification guides. This course will be based around a week long, intensive series of practical and laboratory based sessions to provide participants with the necessary skills to implement habitat and species survey techniques. Training in computer recording packages will also be provided to ensure best practice in species recording is maintained

Project Management for Countryside Professionals

Countryside Managers need to be able to effectively manage their own as well as the work of others. The skills of project planning/reporting/acquisition of funding and the proper upkeep of work related files and paperwork is fundamental to effective management. A strong component of this module will also involve the development of team management skills as well as health and safety awareness.

Integrated Planning Management

Multifunctional land use is a well recognised term. It is part of the planning system at differing scales and with multi-partnership and stakeholder involvement. The module will define both the industry organisations commonly involved in multifunctional land use planning and the other likely stakeholders. The land use changes proposed will take account of the historical and cultural aspects of the landscape.

Integrated planning management is undertaken at different scales ranging from individual project management plans and environmental statements to strategic planning at regional, national or European level. The module will look at how the production of these plans and strategies might be expected to integrate with other planning policy and legislation. Integrated management systems are collective.

Methods and Delivery

This course is studied part time through on-line distance learning. This allows those in continuing employment or with family commitments to participate. With the exception of several weekend schools and a short study tour, the learning is carried out in the student's home or work place.

The PgDip is a high level learning course taught at university post-graduate level. Students are required to complete all taught modules detailed above. Typically a student will study 4 modules per year and complete the PgDip in two years. This would normally take an average of 12 to 15 hours study time a week.

The study weekends and short study tour are an integral part of teaching delivery and students are strongly recommended to attend these if they are to succeed in this course.

Assessment

The course assessment strategy is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; draw on expertise-by-experience; foster active learning and be leaner-centred in approach. A distinct feature of the course is the range of assessment tasks, including those that allow you to undertake workplace relevant assessments that can have an immediate impact in practice. Examples include: written assignments ranging from reflective pieces to academic essays culminating in a service improvement project, assessed practice within your placements; and a portfolio of evidence of learning in practice and a profile of the health needs of your local practice area. The course assessments also include a timed, invigilated exam as this is an NMC requirement

Assessment tasks are designed so that you can tailor them to professional interests, experience and development needs. They are also designed so that you can rehearse ways of thinking and acting that are professionally relevant.

This programme is aimed at registered nurses and midwives, with experience in acute or primary care settings, who wish to build on their experience and transfer their learning in order to develop the higher level of knowledge and skills required for specialist and advanced practice.

Students will be prepared to function at master's level through the programme and will have the unique opportunity to develop practice at a higher level. In the past 'advanced practitioner' posts have tended to be characterised principally by clinical competence; however, this programme accepts that advanced practice is a 'level' of practice rather than a particular role. This programme takes into account the four pillars of practice: clinical practice; leadership; facilitation of learning; and evidence research and development. Therefore, some practitioners will focus on leading and managing services; others will focus on clinical practice and be able to diagnose and treat healthcare needs; and others will have advanced roles within public health.

There are five routes within the programme:
• Clinical Practice (3 years part-time)

There are exit points within this award to allow you to complete with a postgraduate certificate, diploma or an MSc. The professional qualification of district nurse, health visitor or school nurse will be recorded on completion of stage 1 but you may choose to continue to complete the whole MSc.

Clinical Practice:

- is directly linked to the teaching, development and assessment of the nationally recognised benchmarks for advanced clinical practice (RCN 2010). This will be the preferred route for practitioners working in acute care, out of hours services, hospital at night services and in medical and surgical support posts.

District Nursing:

- is aimed at experienced nurses who wish to gain contemporary knowledge to take forward the rapidly changing primary care agenda. It will enable a critical, innovative and reflective approach to address the healthcare needs of individuals, families, carers, groups and communities. Students need to be sponsored or supported by an NHS Board in order to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for practice assessment.

Health Visiting:

Leadership:

- is aimed at nurses and midwives who wish to build on their experience and transfer their learning in order to develop the higher level of knowledge and skills required of a school nurse. Format

This programme is driven by a philosophy that is student centered, progressive, process oriented and practice focused, and a blended approach to learning is adopted. Students will learn within a virtual environment (CampusMoodle) and apply the theoretical learning to their practice through a work based learning approach. Students will therefore have an opportunity to apply learning to their specific area of practice within contemporary healthcare service.

Depending on the route selected and the choice of optional modules, there will be some compulsory attendance at the University - for the clinical examination module and the prescribing element.

Placements and accreditation

Three of the routes are approved by the NMC to meet the requirements of being recorded as a district nurse (NMC 2001), or registered as a health visitor or school nurse on the NMC (2004) register. All five routes are accredited by the RCN.

Clinical Practice and Leadership routes are undertaken within your own place of work with the support of an identified practice facilitator. The criteria for this role are within the admission criteria. If you select to undertake the Non Medical Prescribing module you will require supervision by a designated medical practitioner.

Cognisance has been taken of the recent national work undertaken by NHS Education Scotland which has informed the curriculum of the district nursing, health visiting and school nursing routes.

Students are required to attend placements on the District Nursing, Health Visiting and School Nursing routes ; these are equivalent to 23 weeks full time over the period of the PgDip.

Royal College of Nursing accreditation will be awarded on completion of the full MSc.

Heritage professions involve working with a finite resource which must be managed to ensure its long-term survival. This module attempts to familiarise you with a range of heritage and public history settings and address key concepts such as stewardship and sustainability. The module will be delivered by staff from Dudley Archives service and Black Country Living Museum at these two locations, ensuring students gain the best possible experience

Public History Placement Project
You will be placed in a group in your chosen heritage sector and tasked to complete a real project (such as cataloguing an archival acquisition, putting on a museum display, organising an educational workshop or carrying out a review of visitor experience) which will last for at least 6 months of the course

Assessment

Assessment will be through a series of theoretical and practical tasks designed in collaboration with professionals working in the heritage sector. There will be no exam element to this course.

Attendance

The course will run on one afternoon a week over 9 months, with 4 to 5 Saturday sessions. The first module and the Saturday sessions will be taught at Newman University and all other sessions will take place at Black Country Living Museum and Dudley Archives.

During your second year, you will produce a Dissertation. The Dissertation comprises the final module of the programme for those completing the MA Degree. Students studying part-time move onto either Heritage Learning or the Visitor Experience, plus the Research Skills module.

If you are studying part-time students you will normally complete the MA Degree in your third year, undertaking the Dissertation module. This is the culmination of your studies and an opportunity to explore your interests in the heritage education field.

Introduction

This programme aims to equip nurses and midwives to develop an enhanced and applied knowledge base in Health Visiting Practice allowing you to exit with the required Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) recordable qualification as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.

The programme is delivered in collaboration with NHS Health Board and local authority partners in Western Isles, Highland, Tayside and Forth Valley, combining academic teaching and practice learning throughout the programme.

On successful completion of the programme you will be able to respond to the demands of contemporary public health practice in the community and to work to influence and improve the standard of care for children, young people and their families.

Please note:

Students require a Practice Teacher to supervise and assess their placement learning. At this time in Scotland Practice Teachers are supplied by NHS Health Boards and local Authority partners. Recently Health Boards have advised that they are only able to provide this support to students that they are fully seconding onto the programme. As a result we are not in a position to recruit any independent students.

Academic requirements

All entrants to the MSc/Graduate Diploma in Early Years Practice (Health Visiting) Programmes must meet the following requirements (NMC 2004):

- Valid registration on the Professional register maintained by the NMC;
- The registrant must have developed their own knowledge, skills and competence beyond NMC registration, i.e. normally two year’s post registration experience as a registered nurse or midwife however other relevant professional experience can be considered.
- In order to protect the public the NMC registrants are required to have an up-to-date membership of the Disclosure Scotland: Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme
- Arrangements made to have a Practice Teacher allocated to the student for the duration of the Programme (allocated by the relevant health board area following successful interview).
- Students must demonstrate the ability to study at degree level (minimum academic SCQF Level 9) (NMC 2004; Standard 5);
- Understand the programme requirements regarding length of programme;
- Support from Senior Practice Line Manager.

Structure and content

This programme contains specialist modules that ensure students gain insight into the complexities of caring for children and their families in the early years and act as change agents to facilitate improvements in care provision. What will I learn?

Building on a strong science foundation, the course is designed to expand your knowledge of zoo animal biology and refine your research techniques in aspects of zoo animal welfare, behaviour, population management and the wider roles of the modern zoo such as visitor learning.

In addition to traditional lectures and seminars, units are delivered using the practical resources of our Animal Management Centre, industry specific software and databases, conference attendance, guest speakers and off-site visits. How will I be assessed?

The research project enables students to undertake a detailed experimental study in a chosen area to develop analytical research skills with the support of dedicated supervisors. The student profile is developed throughout the programme, utilising a range of advanced academic and research skills with an emphasis on the practical industry applications of research findings. Interpretation and critical evaluation of current research findings will enable the student to further develop links between the zoo industry and the scientific community.

Evidence-based Husbandry

Zoo husbandry has traditionally relied on inference and anecdote but the need for an evidence based approach is now well documented. Practical application of species biology will be considered and developed alongside a range of methods that can be utilised to evaluate current welfare and husbandry standards. Behavioural analysis and enclosure utilisation studies will underpin this approach, along with wider consideration of health and nutrition.

Contemporary issues in Zoo Biology

This unit sets the historical context of zoos and considers their evolution. The roles of the modern zoo are considered in line with the World Zoo and Aquarium Conservation Strategy with future trends identified and considered. Population management and conservation biology are discussed and applied to modern zoo theory with the use of industry specific software (for example ZIMS) integrated into this delivery.

Visitor Studies and Interpretation

Education is arguably the most important role of the modern zoo. This unit explores how visitors engage with and learn from the numerous opportunities provided within the zoo, drawing on the principles of interpretation, exhibitry and recreational learning theory. It explores the cultural and social context of the zoo and investigates visitor motivation and expectations. Methods of delivering the zoo message will be considered with evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of provision a key theme.

The design of the course is grounded in public health practice. This is in keeping with its overall aim and the statutory requirements set down by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC 2004).

This 52 week full-time (or part-time equivalent) programme comprises 22.5 weeks of theoretical study and 22.5 weeks of learning in the practice setting under the supervision of a Practice Teacher and specialist mentor. This full time route comprises 2 days attendance at Wrexham Glyndŵr University, 2 days in practice and 1 study day per week during term time.

The course is funded by the Welsh Government and entry on to the programme is through joint application and interview by the sponsoring NHS Trust and Glyndwr University.

-Successful completion of the programme enables you to register on Part III of the NMC register and practise as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.
-The course includes the Community Nurse Prescribing V100 programme (integrated in the Specialist Practice modules) which you will be able to record with the NMC.

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Registered Nurses already working in, or wishing to work in, the community can undertake a specified group of modules that allows them to achieve a community qualification or registration recognised by the NMC in District Nursing, Health Visiting or School Nursing.

There are three core modules that enable you to obtain a PgCert. You will then study modules appropriate to your desired route.

The routes in the Person-Centred Practice Framework seek to influence and enable the transformative processes of personal and professional development through engagement, facilitation and evaluation of person-centred teaching and learning approaches. It is designed to meet the professional needs of practitioners from all disciplines working in a variety of different health and social care settings.

The Framework is innovative and interactive, emphasising application of theory to your practice context. It will enable you to critically engage with, evaluate and synthesise the evidence and research to promote the development and enhancement of person centred culture and practice. This develops a pro-active, transformative and reflective approach to meeting the public health and social needs of individuals, families, groups and populations.

You can personalise your learning to your own situation eg mental health, social care, infection control, acute care and community health. International students are particularly welcome as they offer a varied and different perspective to the context in which the learning occurs.

Teaching, learning and assessment

Our teaching, learning and assessment strategy is framed by our core philosophical concepts of personhood, person-centredness, human valuing, healthful relations, human potential and development, supportive and enabling environments. Central to this strategy is the need for learners to engage in the learning experiences, a readiness to listen and explore, preparedness to be open to experiences and a resolve to keep going. This environment will generate an ethos of engagement and criticality where students can explore and challenge theories, practices and different sources of knowledge creatively in an atmosphere of high challenge and high support. This will be achieved through the use of varied strategies which draw on the student’s own areas of practice such as portfolio development, practice proposals, annotated bibliographies, simulation events, games, seminar presentations and self-determined contextual assignment topics. Tutor, peer and self-assessment, including within virtual environments (eg [email protected], Values Exchange), will be an important component of approaches to formative and summative assessment.

For students undertaking NMC recognised specialist qualification and registration (District Nursing, Health Visiting, School Nursing), the course is 50% practice-based and requires placement in an approved practice with a Practice Teacher or Sign-off Mentor or Health Visitor Mentor. Placement will be negotiated with your supporting NHS area.

Your attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part-time.

Links with industry/professional bodies: The routes allow you to gain the higher level knowledge and skills required for advanced practice. It does not gain accreditation with the NMC unless students are undertaking the Specialist Practitioner Qualification in District Nursing or registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN)

All applicants for District Nursing must be on part 1 of the NMC register (adult). All applicants for Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) need to be on either part 1 of the NMC register (adult) and/ or be a registered midwife. It is recommended that applicants have completed a period of experience of sufficient length to have consolidated pre-registration outcomes and to have gained a deeper understanding in relevant professional practice; have a degree and access to practice placement and Practice Teacher/Sign-off Mentor or Health Visitor Mentor.

Other entry requirement information

International: Where your degree has not been studied in English, you will be required to take an IELTS test receiving an overall score of 6.5 and no individual component score below 6.0.

Criminal records check: For students undertaking NMC approved qualifications a satisfactory criminal records check will be required. Compliance with the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and mental health legislation for clinical placement and employability in statutory services, for work with children and in other sensitive areas of employment.

The Postgraduate Diploma prepares you to function as a specialist practitioner. You would normally be required to undertake the first six core modules listed below in order to achieve this. Our MSc will help you continue with your academic studies as you undertake an extended project, relevant to clinical practice. You learn to develop a pragmatic public health philosophy for family healthcare and an evidence-based skill set applicable to the challenges of contemporary practice.

To meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards, your studies consists of 50% practice and 50% theory (alongside 100% attendance). We structure the postgraduate diploma to reflect the important balance of the practice elements, which are designated practice days or work-based learning. A 10 week consolidated practice block (in semester 3) enables you to work independently while remaining under the supervision of a practice teacher. A career in the accounting sector requires a high level of understanding of both the theory and practice of accounting and finance, and this specialist Masters' degree is aimed towards partly qualified accountants who want to combine their practical experience with further academic training. The course will develop your knowledge to higher levels and is aligned to professional body qualifications. It part-prepares you for undertaking further professional examinations in accounting.

Taught by our highly qualified staff who have considerable experience of working in accounting and finance, this course will equip you with the skills necessary to gain high-level positions in the profession. There's also the option of a placement in the third semester of the standard full-time route, further boosting your employability.

You'll benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular activities including Academic skills for Finance, Accounting and Governance and Research Techniques, a range of Bloomberg-based activities, specialist visitor speakers, and expert symposiums and conferences. You'll take part in a residential weekend to discuss current events and specific problems affecting the accountancy field with academics and a visitor practitioner.

There is a fast track route available for fully qualified CCAB accountants; this route will take 10 months to complete and consists of two taught modules and a dissertation.

All modules are assessed by a mix of coursework, individual and group presentations and written exams. Atypical taught module involves a total of 200 study hours (52 contact hours and 148 group and private study hours).

- Fast track route:
You'll study two taught modules and complete a dissertation. There is no placement option on the fast track route.

An optional placement in a relevant business area is available in the third semester of the full-time route. This will enhance your employability skills and apply accounting and finance theory to contemporary business practices.

If you take part in a placement, the dissertation may be linked to your placement experience. A placement is not currently offered on the part-time or fast track mode.

Participation and active learning is encouraged through workshops, seminars, case studies and student led discussion. The MFin International Finance programme benefits from our considerable strength in finance where staff from applied and theoretical finance disciplines have been brought together in the same School.

The MFin International Finance programme is a ‘skills’ based finance degree that contains 8 finance modules and a short focused finance based business report. The structure of the report has been developed following feedback from employers who indicate that they prefer graduates who are able to write concisely, accurately and clearly in a focused report rather than write in the style of a lengthy and less focused dissertation.

The programme begins with a two week foundation programme where students become familiar with a range of concepts in business statistics, economics and finance. The programme helps students to understand how the University operates and how to make the most of the range of student services that are freely available. The foundation programme importantly introduces you to your fellow students who will become a major part of your learning experience at Dundee and will continue to be part of your network of friends and business connections after you graduate.

Off-Campus Learning Events: The programme includes off campus learning events embedded in the modules of some of the modules. These events aim to extend your leaning skills in ways that are directly relevant to the pathway and your personal development. These off campus events are one or two days in length and the cost of the transport, event and any necessary accommodation is covered by the MSc programme. At present there are off campus events embedded in the finance and banking pathways. More off campus events are being arranged and further events are being developed to begin this year.

Urban Experience Event: The MSc programme places considerable importance on ‘team building’ and understanding the role that international and domestic cultural variation plays in the workings of firms, and product and employment markets. These issues are addressed through a unique ‘Urban Experience’ event that helps team building and the development of learning skills. Business themes are also explored in the event.

Distinguished Visitor Series: A feature of the programme is the Distinguished Visitor and Enterprise Gym Lecture Series. Distinguished practitioners in the field are invited to the University to hold seminars highlighting critical aspects of business, finance, banking, management, marketing and human resource management. It offers students a unique opportunity to meet with business leaders and explore current issues with them.

The programme is focused clearly on the applied and theoretical aspects of finance so as to develop you for a career in the finance sector. The inclusion of a shorter finance report allows the programme to expand the opportunity for you to undertake more skills based modules that will improve your career prospects.

In the modern world finance takes an ever increasing role in business, development and the economy. The MFin International Finance programme provides you with the skills and training to play an important role in the finance sector and to develop a career in finance. To achieve this the programme provides you with the right mix of applied and theoretical skills to both understand the issues facing firms and how to deal with these issues.

This course is developed for students who have completed their undergraduate study and are now looking to develop their finance related skills so as to pursue a successful career in the finance sector.

We provide a fresh approach to International Finance that is suitable if you have studied economics, business management or accountancy before or if you are new to the subject. Around half of the students on the programme have a business background while the rest of the students come from a very wide range of non-business backgrounds. The programme has been designed with these students with non-business backgrounds in mind while still challenging students whose first degree has been a business related subject.

- How you will be taught

Teaching focuses on the applied and real world aspects of finance. The programme is delivered mostly within a framework of lectures, workshops and tutorials although other methods of teaching are offered on modules when they aid in understanding and learning.

- How you will be assessed

Module content is assessed through a combination of coursework, quizzes, and end of module exams. The weighting on the coursework component varies depending on the content of the module but may account for as much as 40-50% of the overall degree.
