That's why we've designed this online course - it's your opportunity to learn how to protect and safeguard the information stored on digital devices around the world.

You will gain hands-on experience in a virtual environment, learning how to hack into machines to test their security in a safe and legal system, connecting to a remote machine from your PC or laptop.

Our course will take your existing computing knowledge and develop your security expertise, with in-depth focus on penetration testing and ethical hacking. We'll teach you how to break systems in order to tighten the security and stop others from breaking into them, and develop new ways of protecting a company's security.

To successfully protect organisations you're going to learn how to hack into machines, introduce viruses, and break systems. However, for legal, ethical, and moral reasons we don't want you doing this on your own machines. That's why we provide you with a learning environment that will allow you to connect to a remote machine, providing you with a virtual environment to practise what you learn.

The MSc in Project Management in the Built Environment is designed to meet the growing demand for project managers in the construction industry who can oversee the entire life cycle of any project, including unique and specialist developments. We consult extensively with people from a wide spectrum of companies and organisations in order to make sure that the course content remains practically relevant. For example, prominent companies in the industry are represented in our Professional Liaison Group.

- Many members of staff are part of Brookes' Oxford Institute of Sustainable Development (OISD), a leading research and promotional organisation noted for its work on sustainable technology in buildings and sustainable urban form.

Teaching and learning

Teaching, learning and assessment methods are to a considerable degree determined by the use of problem-based learning (PBL) which leads to a more challenging and industrially relevant course than the traditional lecture approach. Learning takes place through groups of students puzzling through problems, often adapted from real situations with much of the complexity and context intact, using published resources, or reference to experts who are available to offer advice.

Assessment is 100% coursework, which includes a great variety of types of work, including quizzes taken remotely on Moodle (Brookes online learning environment). Material can be downloaded from our virtual learning environment and closed discussions can take place. It also enables on-campus and open-learning students to remain in contact with each other.

In full-time mode, the delivery of new material is generally bi-weekly with intermediate tutorial or seminar sessions. The intensive study weeks and a European field trip, when students in both modes of study come together, complement this delivery pattern. Outside these periods, online learning is the primary mode of learning for distance-learning study. Communication with distance-learning students will be supplemented by email and telephone during the periods off-campus.

Field trips

A European field trip is a compulsory element of the PGCert modules. It typically takes place over a five-day period towards the end of January and is heavily subsidised by the department.

The aim of this field trip is to consolidate the knowledge gained in the early part of the course and to develop team and other relationships through exposing our students to European project management practices and to assess their ability to observe and report on the different approaches to project management in the UK and in a European country.

The field trip normally consists of visits to prominent construction/engineering projects and sites, plus architectural attractions, both en route and at the destination. You are introduced to the development and planning practices at the destination, as well as having the opportunity to visit major complex projects.

Student body

The programme attracts students from diverse backgrounds and locations.

Many of our current students already hold degrees in fields outside the realm of the built environment including law, psychology and geography, and have decided to contribute to the development of the built environment around us by effectively managing projects. They hail from as far afield as Nigeria and India, with backgrounds ranging from languages to architecture.

This diverse group of students bring with them individual responses to the PBL approach that is at the core of our course delivery.

Typically the distance-learning students are employed by a number of different organisations from the private and public sectors in different countries. They have the opportunity to share their experiences in order to gain better understanding of the industry, the range of challenges that project managers face, and therefore the breadth of skills that they need to develop in order to perform successfully.

Our full-time students benefit from contact with the open-learning students engaged in project management roles in a variety of built environment projects across many countries.

Careers

Graduates of the Department of Real Estate and Construction have an outstanding employment record. Local and national construction companies, developers, project managers, house builders, surveyors and housing associations regularly recruit our graduates.

Many of these companies visit the department annually to meet students for graduate positions. Our graduates are recognised as having an excellent level of communication, presentation and problem-solving skills.

All of our open-learning students are employed full-time by prominent companies in the sector.

Full-time students find similar employment shortly after graduation. They typically hold (Assistant) Project Manager positions. However, the breadth of knowledge that our students gain gives them the flexibility to function effectively in a number of different roles.

Free language courses for students - the Open Module

Free language courses are available to full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students on many of our courses, and can be taken as a credit on some courses.

The Master of Research (MRes) in Environment, Energy and Resilience engages the latest critical thinking on risk management, critical infrastructure, public regulation, policy studies and the environmental sciences. It is designed to develop your understanding of key debates relating to environmental challenges, energy resource use and security, and the resilience and adaptability of human systems. It aims to equip you with a broad based and relevant knowledge of research approaches and methods in the interdisciplinary fields of environment and energy studies, and the social responses to issues therein.

The programme aims to prepare you for a career as a professional researcher in either academic or non-academic environments. The core training in interdisciplinary social scientific philosophy, epistemology, methodology and analysis is set within a contemporary context, allowing you to apply the wider concepts and skills introduced in the broader social scientific setting to specific topics of enquiry in environment and energy. You will be encouraged to review and critically evaluate approaches to research and their application, and to identify and investigate your own research questions.

The MRes Environment, Energy and Resilience is accredited by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of the larger ESRC funded South West Doctoral Training Centre(http://www.exeter.ac.uk/doctoralcollege/fundedcentres/swdtc/) a hub of world-class social science research. The MRes also forms the first year of a collaborative 1+3 (MRes + MPhil/PhD) pathway, which includes further collaborative elements with all three institutions.

Learning and teaching

The programme will adopt a range of small group teaching methods alongside the encouragement of independent study. An innovative element of the programme will be to integrate inter-institutional teaching through the ‘Contemporary Debates in Environment, Energy and Resilience’ module using the University’s Access Grid facility. Professional accreditation

RICS and/or CIOB members are well-sought after in the job market.

If you have no or very limited relevant experience in the industry, holding this RICS & CIOB accredited MSc reduces the duration of your structured training (or relevant experience post-qualification) to become a member from five years to 24 months.
Many of our open-learning students run their structured training along-side the course. Thus, they become members of these institutions shortly after the completion of the course.

In summary, the programme offers a relatively quick route to RICS & CIOB membership for people who have no or very limited experience in the industry, and hence increases their potential for employment.

This course in detail

There are two modes of delivery for the MSc PMBE: full-time on campus or distance learning, and there are two entry points - September and January. PGCert and PGDip are offered as 'exit' awards. Candidates who are wishing to graduate with one of these awards, should also apply for a MSc place in the first instance.

Extensive on-line learning material is provided to all students via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) - our own intranet site. Students have access to this site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The course is assessed by 100% coursework submitted via the VLE. Module leaders can be contacted via the VLE, e-mail, telephone and Skype.

Intensive Study Periods - all students can attend four intensive study periods during their programme and these are normally around 3 days long. Students (and staff) enjoy these intensive sessions as they are able to share experiences and knowledge as well as renew friendships and make connections that extend into the industry. The open-learning students get the opportunity to meet face-to-face with staff. The organisation and the collaborative nature of these intensive study periods is always praised by our students who particularly like the site visits, workshops and guest lectures from industry experts that are among the key features.

Distance learners must find their own accommodation and are asked to cover expenses for travel to Oxford, accommodation and food.

Field Trips and Site Visits - there are a number of field trips and site visits which take place mainly during the intensive study periods. There is one European field trip during the MSc programme and this normally takes place at the end of January each year - usually to the Netherlands. As well as bringing together full-time and open-learning students, the aim of this field trip is to integrate knowledge gained in the early part of the programme, to develop team skills and to build relationships. With the European field trip we also expose students to project management practices outside the UK and encourage them to observe and report on the different approaches to managing projects in the UK, their own countries and overseas.

The European Field Trip takes place at the end of January for the duration of five days and four nights. Heavily subsidised by the School, a coach is also provided to transport students and staff from Oxford Brookes to the field trip destination. Please read the details further down the page for information about additional costs for the field trip.

Problem Based Learning - the programme will develop knowledge of current practice and issues in the built environment sector as well as building real-life skills including the exploration of interdisciplinary problems. We have responded to requests from industry to make our masters more practical by using an applied approach to learning, sometimes called “Problem Based Learning” or PBL. This approach encourages learning by allowing students to actively puzzle through problems that are adapted from complex real situations. As real problems cross discipline boundaries and require research and collaboration, we use our links with industrial practitioners to help devise the problems we use in class. This leads to a more exciting and relevant student experience.

The Ravensbourne MA Environment Design investigates spatial design in its real-virtual, and macro-micro scales. Encompassing interior, architecture, cities and natural environments the programme analyzes a series of different perspectives of theory and practice from art, science, and technology towards an understanding of a cultural sustainability.

Systems - Every year the course aims to produce new research that takes forward questions inherent in Modernity. Currently focused on natural ecological systems (earthquakes, tectonic plates, deltas and shorelines), (re)contruction and war, cosmographies and cultures of outerspace, and bio-tech materials ; the course encourages you to explore your own field of research and practice.

Technologies - The Environment Design operates with a multidisciplinary team where knowledge exchange is one of the core points to focus. The Research Process unit supports you in gaining the research skills needed for the development of your individual projects.

Three five-week workshops in the Technology Issues unit will enable you to explore interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary and individually negotiated projects.

In the Business Innovation unit, you are helped to develop an understanding of business and innovative practices in the creative industries.

The Concept and Prototyping unit allows you to further develop the skills you have learnt; for example: using hybrid bottom-up strategies and to take a single line of inquiry, idea or theory embedded in environment design and research and develop the concept.

The Major Project represents the culmination of the your investigation and the final stage of the research strategy.

Learning

You will receive regular support from tutors, peers and subject-specific group tutorials as part of a constant critical dialogue to help create a professional and critical understanding of your individual creative process.

You will benefit from working alongside students on other MA pathways in a multi-disciplinary environment, creating opportunities to widen and expand approaches to your own research and practice giving the opportunity to adapt and adopt new and innovative methods and solutions.

Programme Aims

All postgraduate courses at Ravensbourne provide students with the opportunity to develop advanced skills in the conceptualisation and practical realisation of innovative creative projects in their discipline area and provide them with the entrepreneurial skills to realise their commercial potential. This programme has been designed to meet the challenging demands of the modern learner and the rapidly evolving needs of the built environment sector in respect to the emergence of Building Information Modelling (BIM) as a working practice, the MSc in Buiding Information Modelling and Management , through its intelligent use of the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), is designed to deliver a flexible and innovative programme of study.

The MSc is available both as a one year full-time programme, and in open-learning mode that is normally taken over two years (extendable up to 5 years). The course consists of four core modules plus research methods and a final dissertation. As each of these core modules is entirely self-contained students may enter the program in either September or January.

Prior to September 2016 entry, this programme was named Construction Project Management and BIM.

Why choose this course?

- We use an ‘applied approach’ to teaching, and our students work on real-life or reality based problems as experienced within the construction sector and its associated industries, consultants and clients.

- You are also exposed to behavioural aspects of managing projects, which most construction project managers only experience when their careers are well-advanced.

- This provides a more interesting and engaging learning environment than the traditional ‘study and examination’ approach to learning.

Teaching and learning

Teaching, learning and assessment methods are largely determined by the use of the applied learning approach which leads to a more challenging and industrially relevant course than the traditional lecture approach. Learning takes place through groups of students working through problems together. These are often adapted from real situations with much of the complexity and content intact, using published resources or reference to experts who are available to offer advice.

Full-time mode: new material is delivered weekly with intermediate tutorial or seminar sessions. The intensive study weeks and a European field trip, when students in both modes of study come together, complement this delivery pattern.

Open learning mode: the virtual learning environment (VLE) is the primary mode of delivery. Communication with open learning students is supplemented by email and telephone during the periods off campus.

Approach to assessment

Assessment is 100% coursework, which includes a great variety of types of work, including quizzes taken remotely on Moodle (Brookes online learning environment). Material can be downloaded from our virtual learning environment and closed discussions can take place. It also enables on campus and open learning students to remain in contact with each other.

Field trips

A European field trip is a compulsory element of the PGCert modules. It typically takes place over a five day period towards the end of January and is heavily subsidised by the department.

The aim of the field trip is to consolidate the knowledge gained in the early part of the course and to develop team and other relationships through exposing you to European project management practices and to assess their ability to observe and report on the different approaches to project management in the UK and in a European country.

The field trip normally consists of visits to prominent construction/engineering projects and sites, plus architectural attractions, both en route and at the destination. You are introduced to the development and planning practices at the destination, as well as having the opportunity to visit major complex projects.

About our students

The programme attracts students from diverse backgrounds and locations. They normally hold degrees in fields relating to built environment including civil engineering, construction, architecture and building, and have decided to contribute to the development of the built environment around us by effectively managing construction projects.

Our students come from as far afield as Nigeria, Russia and India, with backgrounds ranging from recently graduated at undergraduate level, to working with small local companies, to fully established managers in large international construction companies. This diverse group brings with them individual responses to the applied learning approach that is at the core of our course delivery.

Typically the open learning students are employed by a number of different organisations from the private and public sectors in different countries. They have the opportunity to share their experiences to gain better understanding of the industry, the range of challenges that construction project managers face, and therefore the breadth of skills that they need to develop to perform successfully.

Our full time students benefit from contact with the open learning students engaged in construction project management roles in a variety of built environment projects across many countries.

Graduates of our postgraduate construction programmes have an outstanding employment record. Our graduates are recognised as having excellent levels of communication, presentation and problem-solving skills. Consequently, our students go on to be project managers right across the broad spectrum of the construction industries both locally and internationally.

Many of these companies visit the department annually to meet students for graduate positions as Assistant project managers whilst all of our open-learning students are employed full-time by prominent companies in the sector.

In the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), our Unit of Assessment (UoA 16) ranked 4th within the University in terms of its Grade Point Average (GPA). The MSc in Future Cities is the first course of its kind in the UK that is looking into the future of cities and provides you with the skills and knowledge to establish long term solutions using data and social science.

The World Health Organisation estimates that by 2050, seven out of ten people will be living in cities; yet as the UN-Habitat programme explains, cities are already using 78% of the earth’s resources and produce 60% of its CO2.

While the future of cities has become the main topic of discussion for local governments around the globe, it is becoming more apparent that the issues need a more holistic approach. This course will equip you with an in-depth understanding of the geography, space, location and built and natural environment and their growing connection and dependencies on data in order for you to develop holistic solutions.

In the second year, for one semester, you’ll undertake an internship, study in another country or join a research group. This valuable experience will enhance your employability and further develop your theoretical and practical skills.

Internship

This option offers the opportunity to spend three months working full-time in one of the many companies/industries with which we have close links. You may be able to extend this over more than one semester in cases where it is adjacent to a vacation period. We will endeavour to help those who prefer this option to find and secure a suitable position but ultimately we are in the hands of the employers who are free to decide who they take into their organisation.

Research

If you take this option, you will be assigned to our Architecture and Built Environment Research Group. There is every possibility that you may contribute to published research and therefore you may be named as part of the research team, which would be a great start to a research career.

We have exchange agreements with universities all over the world, including partners in Europe, Asia, the Americas and Oceania. Human activity is changing the natural environment at an unprecedented rate. As a result, humanity faces a range of complex and interrelated challenges: global warming, ecosystem disruption, biodiversity loss, and, for many, increasing difficulty in meeting the basic human needs for energy, food, water and shelter.

This part-time, online distance learning programme takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding these contemporary environmental issues and will also develop our students’ capacities to address these in professional life.

Each module is facilitated by an e-tutor who will offer academic and technical support as required. Assessment

On a weekly basis, you will receive feedback via the discussion board per each discussion thread. The Learning Packs will contain self-assessment questions, and tutors will provide formative feedback on your responses to these questions. Participation on taught modules is a pre-requisite for sitting the final assessment. Participation is mandatory and is therefore assessed as a pass/fail summative assessment. The activity requiring participation may vary from module to module, however, a standard will be maintained across all modules. For instance, if a module requires participation vis-à-vis posting messages/responses on a module discussion board and there are eight weekly opportunities to do so, you will be required to submit four posts (50%) for assessment. Each post must be sufficient in length (i.e. approximately 500 words). You are expected to participate in all online activities.

Summative assessment of the taught modules that comprise the degree will be by coursework only (3,500 words). It is considered that you will obtain the greatest academic benefit and satisfaction from researching a topic, reflecting on it and providing considered arguments in relation to it, as well as affording the opportunity to explore particular topics in greater depth. All coursework must be submitted via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Email submissions will not be accepted.

You will be offered a range of assessment titles in each subject. Additional titles may be added to reflect any developments in the subject occurring during the teaching of the module, enabling you to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues and to respond to the most up-to-date information available.

Modules

The distance learning LLM in International Business Law programme consists of taught modules of 150 credits (five modules at 30 credits each) and a compulsory Dissertation module of 30 credits.

In the first academic term, all students are required to take the Core module, Foundations of Law in International Business (30 credits). Upon successful completion of the Core module, you will select any further four taught modules from the range of available subjects. Students are free to take one or two modules each academic term.

All modules run over a period of 10 weeks (10 units). Each module requires approximately 300 hours of study and students will normally spend between 25 and 30 hours a week on each module, comprised mainly of self-directed and on-line hours. Typically, once all taught modules have been successfully completed, students proceed to the Dissertation (30 credits).

Elective modules - the elective modules will draw from a variety of sources of law, including laws from different systems of law (European Union Law, international law and the English common law) to make your learning experience more rewarding. The programme will take an internationalist and comparative legal approach wherever appropriate, an approach that is more enriching for professionals who work in a global environment. This distinguishes The City Law School distance learning LLM from most other LLMs offered by UK universities. Programme Description

With the increased acceptance of 3D visualisation and animation in everyday use in areas as diverse as computer games development, film and television special effects, online virtual world development, architecture, product design, industrial design and marketing, the MA 3D Design for Virtual Environments is designed to enable you to develop advanced skills, knowledge and understanding within the field of 3D visualisation and computer based animation.

The programme is oriented towards current industrial needs, technology and practice and provides the key skills required to develop both practical and theoretical proficiency in any specialist area of 3D animation. The programme addresses the demand for visual designers with the creative vision and technical skills needed to support core design skill sets that exploit the animation and visualisation processes.

Working in a predominately digital environment, you will also explore the relationships between the use of video and animation materials within digital video, multimedia and web publishing. This allows for the experimentation with interactive media types and techniques in order to enhance understanding, learning and product conceptualisation.

The programme assumes no prior knowledge of 3D design; it provides the opportunity to add specialist 3D expertise in 3D modelling and animation, digital video production and digital media integration techniques to your existing skill set.

Students will gain knowledge and experience of the different production phases of a digital media project. Pre production skills such as planning, storyboarding and developing conceptualisation skills, production skills in 3D modelling, animation, lighting and rendering using advanced 3D applications such as 3DS Max and Maya, post production skills in video editing, integration of 2D and 3D visuals and DVD production will all be covered.

Placements and accreditation

The Postgraduate Diploma has been accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the UK's professional body for personnel and development specialists, since 1980. The course was successfully re-accredited in May 2011.

This course is currently delivered in full-time, part-time and online modes. Since June 2005 it has been CIPD accredited for online delivery via the University's Virtual Campus.

Students who attain the MSc will become Associate Members of the CIPD.
