What is a nurse practitioner?

A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse educated to function autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and expanded clinical role. This role includes assessment and management of clients using nursing knowledge and skills, but is not limited to the direct referral of clients to other health care professionals, prescribing medications, and ordering diagnostic investigations.

Who is this course for?

This course prepares you for role of nurse practitioner in an advanced clinical setting. On completion of this course you will meet the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Nurse Practitioner Competency Standards.

Course Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner), graduates will be able to:

Must be registered as a nurse with AHPRA with no conditions relating to unsatisfactory professional performance or unprofessional conduct; and
Have completed an bachelor degree in nursing, at this or another University; or hold equivalent qualifications; or submit, as an exceptional case, other evidence of appropriate professional attainments including professional experience in nursing; and
Hold a postgraduate qualification in their specialty area; and
Have completed a minimum of five years full-time equivalent (FTE) of clinical experience as a registered nurse of which at least three years FTE is in a relevant specialty area including one year FTE in an advanced practice level in the relevant specialty area of practice; and

Post admission requirements

Hepatitis B immunisation:
Students must provide evidence of being immune to hepatitis B. A blood-borne viral disease may result in a student’s inability to obtain a placement in a Queensland Health facility and consequently may result in their inability to complete the requirements of the course as accredited by the relevant professional accrediting body. If a student has not complied with the above requirement before the start of their first placement, their enrolment will be terminated immediately.

The course
The programme is typically delivered on a blended-learning part-time basis, studied over three academic years, with students completing the taught modules within the first two years and completing the Masters Research Project within an individually negotiated timescale over one to two years. The programme is designed to be flexible; applicants may not wish to enrol for an MSc but to study some of the modules as part of a Continuing Professional Development Programme. One or more triads of modules will be delivered over a year to make up a post-graduate certificate (PgC) in a particular topic area. Individual modules could be studied for CPD, six modules studied for a PgD or six taught modules plus the research project for the MSc.

How will it benefit me?
Veterinary nursing is now a recognised profession with registration and responsibilities. One is Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Several hundred qualified veterinary nurses have trained through the degree route and more have studied other animalrelated degrees. There are also an increasing number of RVNs who have completed the Dip AVN. Although there is a wide range of CPD courses and events provided around the country, this is an opportunity to develop advanced knowledge and skills in areas of veterinary nursing which are not covered in depth in most undergraduate syllabuses, and achieve a postgraduate award.

Careers
Learning new skills is important in a profession, whether it is to develop confidence and skills in general practice or to be part of a team in a specialist or referral practice. The MSc modules have been chosen to enhance skills in developing and expanding fields of veterinary practice, and to complement and build on the more generic skills found in the undergraduate degrees and Dip AVN.

A clinical MSc in Veterinary Nursing would also develop the CV of those with an interest in teaching. We are being encouraged to nurse from an 'evidence base'. To establish an evidence base in veterinary nursing people must be willing and able to determine evidence and to publish it. The research project element of the MSc aims to develop and support those with an interest in this field.

Research environment

There is a strong research culture within the Nursing & Health Care School. During the programme you will learn how to write a research proposal and will carry this through to a dissertation project. You will be taught by staff who regularly publish papers and contribute to conferences.

There are opportunites to take your study further by completing a Masters by Research or a PhD. We aim to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research. Research within the school is undertaken with the view to positively influence the quality of health care locally, nationally and internationally.

This course has been developed in response to the demand from Registered Nurses who are seeking tertiary qualifications in rural and remote practice. The course has been designed through collaboration with The Cunningham Centre (Queensland Health).
Students will engage in theory and clinical learning to enhance their performance in the specialty area of rural and remote practice, while attaining a postgraduate university degree at James Cook University. This course uses an additive model, with subjects being offered by JCU and Queensland Health to fulfil the requirements of the award.
The specialty component of the course is to be conducted by The Cunningham Centre within their Rural and Isolated Practice Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation 1996 – Registered Nurse Course [RIPRN].

Research environment

There is a strong research culture within the Nursing & Health Care School. During the programme you will learn how to write a research proposal and will carry this through to a dissertation project. You will be taught by staff who regularly publish papers and contribute to conferences.

There are opportunites to take your study further by completing a Masters by Research or a PhD. We aim to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research. Research within the school is undertaken with the view to positively influence the quality of health care locally, nationally and internationally.

Career prospects

Virtually all of our graduates in our parallel multiprofessional programme Advanced Practice in Health Care, within 1 year of completion, have gained promotion within their specialism. Many remain in clinical practice and become specialists and advanced practitioners in their chosen fields.

Increasingly our graduates are returning for PhD study, to further embrace the evidence based approaches to clinical care.

Many decide that education is their career destination and return to the department to gain further expertise in a teaching role, both undergraduate and postgraduate.

This online programme will give you a comprehensive understanding of the processes, investigation procedures and treatment options for common diseases you encounter in general medical practice.

The programme is mostly for early postgraduate doctors. It complements the learning you need to achieve membership of the Royal College of Physicians and it may also be suitable for doctors in other specialties, or nurse consultants and other paramedical specialists with extensive clinical experience.

We cover basic physiology, pathophysiology, therapy and clinical management, as well as clinical skills, generic skills (including writing and research methods) law, ethics and prescribing ability.

Problem-based learning through clinical case scenarios will be used to enhance knowledge and clinical decision-making. We use a variety of e-learning resources and platforms, including a virtual classroom with online tutorials and lectures, online interactive resources and virtual patients.

This course has been developed in response to the demand from Registered Nurses who are seeking tertiary qualifications in rural and remote practice. The course has been designed through collaboration with The Cunningham Centre (Queensland Health).
Students will engage in theory and clinical learning to enhance their performance in the specialty area of rural and remote practice, while attaining a postgraduate university degree at James Cook University. This course uses an additive model, with subjects being offered by JCU and Queensland Health to fulfil the requirements of the award.
The specialty component of the course is to be conducted by The Cunningham Centre within their Rural and Isolated Practice Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation 1996 – Registered Nurse Course [RIPRN].
