Course Overview

The MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship is delivered on the UWTSD London campus and at Tileyard Studios, King’s Cross, London. Tileyard Studios is the largest professional music community in Europe featuring 82 recording studios, 110 entertainment businesses and the new Tileyard Education Centre.

The programme is designed to prepare students for a future as label owners, publishers, managers, promoters, new technology pioneers and creative business specialists. In addition to the UWTSD London Campus facilities and resources, Tileyard Studios provides students with direct access to more than 1000 creative industry entrepreneurs, while developing cutting edge thinking and insight into the management and growth of independent record labels, music publishing, artist management, promotion, marketing and new technology entrepreneurship.

The course provides a critical understanding of music and entertainment management and organisations in a global context both on and offline. The core of the programme focuses on digital and independent entrepreneurial skillsets and practice as well as more traditional business methods within the context of the new mixed media economy. The course consist of six taught modules in Part I and an industry-related major business project in Part II.

Alongside specialised modules in Creative Music Management, Marketing, Live Event Management and New Media Technology, MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship students will develop a major business plan project for presentation to a panel of seed and incubation investors and business angels, curated by Tileyard Studios, seeking to invest in new creative business opportunities and IP.

Students will have access to the new Tileyard Education Centre featuring a professional recording studio, audio-visual tech lab and writing production rooms where they can collaborate with other creative MA students such as Commercial Songwriting and Production.

This industry-centric course also includes regular, large-scale industry networking events, held at Tileyard Studios in partnership with Notting Hill Music and sponsors, an unrivalled masterclass series, a one-to-one electronic mentoring program, work-based learning projects and access to the annual calendar of industry-centric events held on site at Tileyard Studios.

The technology and applications of Non Destructive Testing (NDT) are wide-ranging and constantly evolving. Major fields of application include the aerospace industry, oil, gas and energy generation, chemical industries, space technology, rail transport, shipping and manufacturing.

Other applications are constantly emerging and there are strong links with medical technology. New NDT techniques need to be developed to meet the changing needs of nano-technologies.

Course Overview

Careers in NDT often offer opportunities to travel and to work in new, high technology industries. The series of taught modules that form part one of the course will develop your in-depth knowledge and understanding of non-destructive testing technologies. The University has access to a range of state-of-the-art equipment and technologies including: Infrared Thermography; Ultrasonics; Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer; a ballistics testing cell and, DeltaVision computer software for the measurement of photoelasticity. Practical tasks undertaken with these facilities will enable you to develop your skills in applying a variety of testing and measurement techniques and critically examining the results.

Upon the successful completion of 120 credits in part one, you will be required to undertake an independent research project worth 60 credits. Your dissertation supervisor will be available to you to help guide you through the independent research phase.

Collaboration and Knowledge Transfer
Non Destructive Testing (NDT) and evaluation is a key area of research for UWTSD Swansea, where we are the lead academic partner in the NDT Validation Centre in Port Talbot (just outside Swansea), operated by TWI, a global leader in technology engineering and one of the UK's largest research organisations, with an international reputation. This partnership offers excellent opportunities to our students, providing industrial links relevant to the Part 2 project. Furthermore, funding from the Welsh Government and from the EPSRC has facilitated the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment. Other links with industry include: Knauf Insulation; Silverwing UK Ltd; Oceaneering Inspection Services; Team Precision Pipeline Assembllies; Cyden; and, Rikoset.

UWTSD Swansea is the lead academic partner in the NDT Validation Centre, just outside Swansea, and through this partnership has strong links with TWI, one of the UK's largest research organisations, with an international reputation. The Institute has received significant funding for equipment and has an active research group in NDT,

Students will study the ‘ancient wisdom’ of China, which is of great cultural significance and is increasingly seen as relevant to contemporary concerns, such as personal and societal well-being and sustainability.

Course Overview

This Programme will focus on advanced-level engagement with Classical Chinese Confucian texts and the spiritual, cultural and political values and practices that they embody.

Modules will focus on enhancing understanding of Classical Chinese and methodologies such as textual criticism, commentary, and textual analysis.

This will be followed by modules which are thematically organised around the study of key texts from within The Complete Library of the Four Branches Literature and The Essence Encyclopedia of the Four Branches of Literature. Textual study modules are thematically focused, and will consider issues such as the origins and content of key texts, and the history of and developments in translation and commentary.

Confucian Classics Studies (SICH7013) will explore some of the main texts of Confucianism, and interpretations of the philosophy and the cultural impact of these texts, including The Book of I Ching, The Book of History and Three Annals of Spring and Autumn.

Interpretation of The Four Books (SICH7002) will focus on the Great Learning, the Doctrine of the Mean, the Confucian Analects, and the Book of Mencius. Readings from the Governing Principles of Ancient China (SICH7003) will focus on the Exoteric traditions of the Han version of the Songs, the Sayings of Confucius and his disciples, the Six Secret Strategic Teachings, An Essay on Government by Liu Yi, Yangzi Book on Government and On the Important List of Government.

The MA Education programme outlined has evolved from an MA programme that has been running since 1984 and in recent years has operated as a part time degree completed within up to 5 years. The history of the programme is both interesting and complex with developments grounded in the national and local contexts of Continuing Professional Learning and Development and, inevitably the ever changing educational landscape in Wales. The programme has produced a large number of graduates. Many of these graduates have gone on to secure promotions in the professional lives.

Course Overview

The programme has evolved and developed over the last twenty eight years. It has long been a successful and popular programme with teachers and educationalists. Productive and strong collaborative links have been developed between UWTSD, ERW, local authorities, schools and outside agencies.

Following a review and in line with current thinking, the programme team decided to design and offer a range of specialised pathways in addition to the generic Post Graduate Certificate/Diploma in Education and MA (Ed) being offered.

The full MA (Ed) is a modular programme comprising six modules.

Part One of the programme requires the student to take four ‘taught’ modules; (120 credit units at Master’s level). Part Two of the programme comprises the dissertation, equivalent to two full modules (60 credit units at Master’s level). It requires the student to complete a dissertation following a period of independent study on a topic of interest and relevance to themselves. Students following named award pathways must complete the dissertation (Part Two) within their specialist area.

During Part One of the programme, students will attend modules led by a tutor. In addition, students will undertake directed and independent study and will work towards the submission of an assignment for each module.

During Part Two of the programme students will be allocated a one-to-one supervisor to support them through their dissertation and will also attend dissertation support sessions.

The Post Graduate Certificate is a modular programme comprising two 30-credit modules.

The Post Graduate Diploma is a modular programme comprising four 30-credit modules.

The MA (Ed), Postgraduate Diploma/ Postgraduate Certificate is a part-time programme of study for teachers and other educational professionals who wish to extend their academic and professional development. It is therefore conceptualised and delivered in ways that will enhance the intellectual development of participants as individuals (personal development), enable participants to reflect on and act on issues and priorities which are relevant to them in their educational establishments (staff development) and provide them with insight into developments within education taking place outside their own schools and institutions which may have an impact directly or indirectly on themselves as practitioners (professional development).

The programme as a whole is designed to support teaching as a research-based profession. We believe that practice is improved through reflection-on-action and that practitioner research must play a fundamental part of school improvement and professional development.

The purpose of the MA (Ed) is not to detach theory from practice but to enable theory to inform practice. The degree is designed to build on the realities of educational practice and support individual teachers in their professional development and/ or career objectives. The MA (Ed) presents an opportunity for teachers to create communities of learning and teaching networks that will outline the time spent studying on the programme.

The primary function of the MA (Ed) programme team is to assure academic standards, the quality of the programme, the student experience and the assessment procedures, taking full regard of the precepts or, “key matters of principle that the higher education community has identified as important for the assurance of quality and academic standards”. (QAA 2004). Quality assurance is paramount and the programme team has striven to ensure the quality and relevance of the programme is maintained through new effective and stringent systems that have been introduced.

The Learning Outcomes will be assessed through a mixture of different assignments, portfolios of work and a dissertation. The learning, teaching and assessment strategy devised for the modules will ensure that the specialist skills are developed and clearly assessed.

The education and training of Business Studies teachers is a long-established feature of UWTSD. The course is the main provider of Business Studies teachers in Wales and enjoys an enviable reputation in the sector. The course incorporates the most recent innovations and thinking in Business Studies teaching.

Course Overview

The aims of the course are to provide an engaging and relevant professional training that enables Business graduates to (i) transform their Business Studies expertise into competent and effective classroom teaching, (ii) develop an understanding of how pupils learn Business subjects, (iii) critically evaluate and enhance their teaching to improve quality and effectiveness in the classroom.

The Business Studies course has strong links with the professional Business Studies teaching networks. There is regular use of visiting expert teachers and professionals from partner schools/colleges, Awarding Bodies, and industry and commerce.

The PGCE Business Studies course has links with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David's Swansea Business School. The 'Big Business Bonanza' is an event that is held every year and local pupils are invited to attend, with the PGCE Business students helping to organise and run the event.

The PGCE Business Studies course uses partner schools and colleges across South Wales. Placements are decided after consultations between mentors, subject tutors and the Programme Director.

Trainees are given the opportunity to express preferences as to the areas in which they wish to practise; however, many other factors need to be considered in placing trainees and there can be no guarantees that trainees' wishes will be met. All placements will be found within realistic commuting distances, although trainees are expected to be prepared to travel to placements.

Key Features

The Business Studies PGCE at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David makes rigorous demands on participants, but trainees are also given a high level of constructive support and counselling in developing their teaching and personal skills.

The University offers excellent support to trainees in seeking their first posts. There are dedicated jobs bulletins and notice boards. Participants are trained in interview techniques. There is also a large and popular annual Teaching Employment Fair in January.

The employment rate for the course is the best in Wales and many graduates of the course are now Heads of Department or Senior Teachers and act as Mentors for the programme.

Assessment

As a postgraduate academic course, the PGCE is assessed through two main components: there are four written assignments and Professional Teaching Experience includes thorough assessment of practical teaching skills.

The written assignments are based around realistic professional teaching tasks which seek to integrate preparation, research and inquiry.

Career Opportunities

The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education has excellent graduate employment rates with 99% of graduates going into employment or further study (DLHE 14/15).

Many school and college departments, both locally and nationally, are staffed with several of our teachers and many of our trainees have gone on to forge successful teaching careers at strategic, professional and management levels at home and abroad.

Our PGCE graduates usually remain in close touch with us as they make their careers in the teaching profession and they often become Subject Mentors on the programme. This creates a very strong, sustainable professional network of teachers which is a rich source of continuing professional development.

Key Features

A PGCE in secondary geography at UWTSD Swansea allows you to gain all of the essential knowledge, understanding and practical experience to enter the teaching profession.

The course is divided into a theoretical university based section and two school-based practical experiences. Whilst on the course you will work closely with other students who will provide you with a support network throughout the year.

The university based section is delivered by experienced staff members who are fully dedicated to your development as a professional.

You will gain tutorage in all aspects of planning and delivering the geography curriculum, and you will develop a thorough understanding of practical issues such as assessment, behaviour management and key organisational skills. In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to experience expert guidance in all matters related to your wider professional development as a teacher.

During the school based placements you will have the opportunity to teach under the close guidance of a trained subject mentor. This experience will be graduated in nature so you will start with a limited timetable and work up to a majority timetable by the end of the course.

You will have the opportunity to teach key stages 3 and 4, with key stage 5 experience also available to most trainees. You will work in two different schools that will chosen by your tutor according to your individual needs.

Our programme is the largest of its kind in Wales and we are in the ideal position for students to access schools across the South Wales region. We have the best employment rate of all of the Initial Teacher Training and Education centres in Wales, and you will be given support in finding employment upon successful completion of the course.

Our staff members have a wide range of skills and expertise including: very recent teaching experience, inspection participation, INSET training for practicing teachers, advisory/consultant experience, and setting, marking and moderation work with major exam boards.
