Overview

The MSc Advanced Computer Science course prepares students to work in roles that require the use of data management, analysis and presentation tools, the development of software to deliver services or to control complex processes and equipment, or to provide system analysis and development consultancy to a varied range of clients. The course does not require background in programming or data analysis and for those with no such background appropriate training is offered to catch up with others who already have such training or experience. The course aims to match the needs of business that compete globally in a world driven by advances in information technology. The programme aims to develop both technical and people skills making our graduates ready for jobs that offer high satisfaction and regular challenge at the same time. The first semester of the course is organised into modules delivered intensively over three week periods. The second semester is organised using usual semester-long modules with the difference that all these modules are assessed by coursework only. The summer semester is dedicated to a Master’s level research or development project

Course Aims

The aims of the programme are to equip students with knowledge of a range cutting-edge areas of computer science research and applications and to prepare students to be successful in a variety of computer science related jobs. The course covers advanced computer science topics, including user interaction design, big data, cloud computing, security, intelligent systems and mobile-oriented web applications. The course also provides a good grounding in collaborative team work and general skills for technology consultants.

Core Modules:

User Interaction Design (15 credits – Semester 1): The module provides the knowledge and skills required for a student to be able to work on User Interaction Design based on an evaluated assessment of the factors associated with a given application or user interaction scenario.

Distributed Intelligent Systems (15 credits – Semester 1): This module provides the knowledge and skills required for a student to be able to develop applications to control intelligent systems in a distributed and collaborative context, including the programming of robots or intelligent home appliances (e.g. TV, fridge, etc. equipped with embedded computers).

Statistical Techniques for Data Analytics (15 credits – Semester 1): This module provides the knowledge and skills required for a student to be able to develop applications to store, process, distribute, visualise and analyse large volumes of big data using distributed databases, statistical techniques and machine intelligence methods.

Cloud Computing (15 credits – Semester 2): The module provides the knowledge and skills required for a student to be able to understand the principles of operations of cloud computing and to develop applications for cloud computing environments, e.g. data storage and distribution, software-as-service, interactive content services.

Web Technologies and Security (15 credits – Semester 2): To module provided an understanding of contemporary web technologies used for both server and client side development of web applications, with particular focus on mobile applications, and an understanding of security aspects of such applications and of the defence methods and techniques employed to provide security.

Collaborative Application Development (15 credits – Semester 2): The module places students in a real world scenario requiring co-operation and communication as well as analysis and design skills. This will involve work for a real world client working as a development team.

Problem Solving Skills for Consultants (15 credits – Semester 1 & 2): This module explores skills such as project management, communication and team working and building. It also provides knowledge of ethical, legal and social issues related to the development and deployment of Information Technology.

Optional Modules:

System Design & Programming (15 credits – Semester 1): This module provides the knowledge and skills required for a student to be able to design software systems and write object oriented programs in an appropriate programming language (e.g. Java, C#).

Research Horizons (15 credits – Semester 1): To module provides the knowledge for a student about a selected computer science research area and the skills required for the development of a mini-project in this area

Project or Industrial Placement

MSc Project or Industrial Placement (60 credits – Semester 3): Provides an integration of concepts taught on the course in either an academic or business environment

Teaching & Assessment

All first semester 15 – credit taught modules, with the exception of one module delivered over two semesters, will be delivered in block mode, i.e. each of these modules will be delivered over a period of six consecutive weeks. In any week at most two block mode modules will be scheduled to be delivered during the first semester. All taught modules in the second semester are delivered along the whole semester.

The taught modules are mainly assessed by coursework, with examinations in some of the modules. Project assessment is based largely on a substantial final report.

Additional Costs

Additional costs may be incurred for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines. Some travel costs may be incurred if an external project or placement is undertaken; any such costs will be discussed with the student before the project is confirmed. It will be possible for the student to select an internal project and that would not incur any additional travel costs.

We educate designers who can articulate and develop cutting-edge practices in key areas of interaction design: tangible and sensor-based interaction, wearable and embodied interaction, game design, participatory design practices, critical design, social innovation and collaborative media development. Students approach these genres within a broad context that considers the social, political and ethical consequences of their designs. Our education is studio-based, bringing students into close contact with our design professors.

Practical Design Skills and Academic Research

Interaction design is a rapidly changing discipline, and we maintain the relevance of our education by working with real-world design cases and outside clients that include local industry partners, as well as cultural and civic organisations. Navigating a shifting design landscape also requires the critical mindset of a scholar, and we foster reflective design by teaching research skills and involving students in active research projects.

Internationally Recognised

Our programme was founded in 1998, making it one of the more established programmes of its kind. We focus on areas where our design and research excellence is internationally recognised: tangible and sensor-based interaction, wearable and embodied interaction, game design, participatory design practices, critical design, social innovation and collaborative media development.

Who are you?

Interaction design requires the fusion of multiple skill sets. We recruit students with different backgrounds – design, media, engineering, the arts, and social sciences – and focus our teaching on creating disciplinary synergy in the concrete design work.

Content

The programme comprises full-time study for one academic year, divided into four courses starting with a studio-based introduction to multidisciplinary collaboration and mainstream interaction design. The next two courses address embodied interaction and collaborative media, two of our signature topics. The final course is a Master’s level graduation project.

Teaching Methods

The programme is based on a learning-by-doing pedagogy. This means that we encourage an iterative practice of experimentation and reflection. As teachers, we view ourselves as coaches guiding you in this process.

Studio-based

The programme is studio-based. You will also have access to computer labs, a materials workshop and a prototyping lab for electronics, sensor and microprocessor programming.

Group work in multidisciplinary teams

The primary method of learning is through group work in multidisciplinary teams with classmates and other stakeholders. Abilities to work in teams and with others – including user communities – are important parts of our curriculum, and several projects are organised to practice doing this.

Humanistic approach

With our humanistic approach, you will be practicing qualitative research approaches to support your design of tangible artefacts as well as digital and interactive services, systems and artefacts. We emphasize an understanding of people in their use situations.

Reflective and experimental design thinking and practical doing

Prototyping in the studio and real-world contexts is an integral part of becoming an interaction designer.

To practice reflective and experimental design activity, projects and courses integrate seminars and hands-on workshops introducing students to, among other things, ethnographic fieldwork, visualisation, low- and high-fidelity prototyping, microprocessor programming and video sketching, as well as evaluation of use qualities. All these practices are backed up by literature references and examples.

The thesis project

Your thesis project will be a combination of a design project and reflective writing that will involve communicating and discussing your design work. This is one result of a student's work in Thesis Project I.

Working environments

Students have access to studio space, and we encourage a healthy studio culture. This is where we conduct group-work, seminars, workshops, presentations and discussions. Close by there is a well-equipped materials workshop and a physical prototyping lab for electronics and sensor work. Additionally, we often use the facilities at the MEDEA research centre for final presentations, exhibitions, seminars and programme-meetings.

Career opportunities

Students enter the programme with different kinds of expertise, from art and design to engineering and social sciences. Upon graduation, you will have built a strong understanding of how your particular skills play a role in interaction design and how they combine with other specialities of fellow designers.

Potential positions

Most alumni move on to positions as interaction designers, user experience specialists or usability architects in the ICT, telecom and media industries. For some, this involves fine-tuning the interfaces and interactions of current products to users' needs; other interaction designers work on concept development for future products and services. Yet other alumni find their calling in strategic positions where the role of interaction design is considered in relation to market and business development.

Some interaction designers are also found in the role of change agents in public organisations and NGOs.

Who is it for?

This course is for people who share our ethos of wanting to design technology that meets user needs - interactive systems that are useful, easy-to-use and engaging. It is for people who get frustrated when they interact with unnecessarily complicated Websites, mobile apps or other interactive systems and think 'I want to be able to improve this.' It is for people that want to design technology based on an understanding of users' needs and to ensure that the products they and others design meet those needs. We welcome students who share this user-centred ethos.

Objectives

This course will equip you with the latest academic research, theories and techniques in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), User Experience (UX), usability and Interaction Design and encourages you to think about design in new ways - recognising that there are many 'right' ways to design interactive systems.

You will gain a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge, along with the necessary skills and experience to create engaging user experiences. You will study modules that cover the entire user-centred design and evaluation process; from understanding user needs, to designing interactive systems that meet those needs, to evaluating the usability of those (and existing systems) through user research.

Placements

You will have the option to undertake a six month UX internship, after the taught part of the course has finished.

All internships are paid and provide valuable work experience, enhancing employability. As an internship student you can apply the HCI/UX knowledge and skills you have developed on the course in real-world projects and build a UX work portfolio. This supports you in standing out in the job market. You will also get the opportunity to conduct your independent research project on a topic of interest to both you and the internship company. This helps ensure the practical importance of the research.

Academic facilities

You will benefit from the use of the City Interaction Lab - a combined commercial and research lab, where we have undertaken UX consultancy for prestigious companies including Virgin Atlantic. The lab is fitted with the latest technologies including a usability testing suite, mobile testing station, eye-tracker, interactive tabletop, brain interaction technology, 3D printer and more. We employ student consultants on some projects, providing the opportunity to work on real client projects.

Teaching and learning

The course is delivered by distinguished academics from City University London's Centre for HCI Design, who all have a passion for user-centred design. Industry professionals also participate in teaching and learning - by giving guest lectures, running practitioner tutorials and even by providing feedback on students' design outputs and input into module content, ensuring that students learn the knowledge and skills most valued by industry.

Assessment

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities and interactive workshops and tutorials. It is assessed in a variety of ways, including:
-Examinations (which focus on applying HCI theory in realistic situations).
-Coursework (which range from written reports and essays, to posters, presentations and design documentation - e.g. wireframe prototypes). A range of both group and individual courseworks are set during the course. Group courseworks are often centred around realistic design projects.
-Independent research project (dissertation). The independent project allows students to conduct original research on an HCI topic of their choice.
-Each of these account for around one-third of the total course assessment. However, the exact balance varies according to the chosen elective module.

Modules

You will study seven core modules and one elective module that cover the entire user-centred design and evaluation process. Modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, online activities and interactive workshops and tutorials. These include sessions delivered by guest lecturers from industry. Full-time students spend eight hours/week in lectures and four hours/week in seminars/tutorials. Part-time students spend half this time in classes. Overall workload is around 36 hours/week for full-time and 18 hours/week for part-time students.

You will also undertake an independent Research Project, for which our module on Research Methods and Professional Issues will prepare you.

A series of optional, but recommended, practitioner tutorials supplement the taught modules. These include talks, workshops and field trips. Previous tutorials have featured HCI/UX practitioners from prestigious companies including Foolproof, Futureheads and eBay.

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is concerned with the design and use of computer and mobile technology, focusing on the interfaces between people and systems. This interdisciplinary degree programme sits at the intersection of engineering, behavioural sciences, and design. About this degree

Students develop an understanding of the relevance and application of human physical, cognitive, social, and affective knowledge to the design of interactive systems. They learn to analyse and test user performance, preferences and experience in relation to human-centred interactive systems. Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

Dissertation/report

The MSc project gives you the opportunity to conduct research in the area of human-computer interaction under the supervision of a member of UCLIC staff. A broad range of topics and questions are offered and you will work closely with your supervisor in selecting and carrying out your project. Many former projects have contributed to publications at leading international conferences, such as the ACM SIGCHI conference.

Teaching and learning

Our modules use a combination of lectures and practical activities. Activities are often structured around individual or group projects, such as the evaluation of a system or the creation of a prototype. Modules are assessed through a mixture of coursework and exams. Coursework is varied and includes design portfolios, presentations, videos, reflective reports, and online peer learning tasks as well as more traditional academic essays.

This newly redesigned course enables graduates to be able to understand, design and develop digital solutions within the emergent digital economies harnessing data and interaction paradigms.

Graduates would be able to follow a flexible program of study and either plan a career in interaction design, mobile and digital solutions, data and analytics, or emergent systems or to explore the opportunities offered in London as a start-up capital.

The digital sector continues to evolve and technologies, platforms, interaction paradigms and business models are increasingly requiring technical ability combined with commercial and design acumen that the course encourages.

Boston Consulting Group estimated that by end of 2016 the Internet economy in the G-20 economies will be worth USD 4.2 trillion (up from USD 2.3 trillion in 2010) and that the Internet contributes over 12 per cent of GDP in the United Kingdom.

The mobile apps sector has revenues of more than €10 billion per annum or jobs in the order of 790.000 across the whole EU economy and continues to grow at a fast rate.

Within the UK the digital sector has critical importance and reports suggest 14.4% of companies in the UK are involved in the Digital economy and some 1.46 million people are employed.

More than one million jobs were advertised in 2014 showing a growth of 28% and there are suggestions that the growth forecast is around 5.4%

The Business Growth Fund and Barclays published a report in March 2014 that supported the phenomenal growth experienced by tech businesses in the UK, finding that London is home to Europe's fastest growing tech cluster, with 27% of all job growth in London generated by the tech and digital sector.

A recent study published by the Department of Culture, Media and Sports valued the creative industries as contributing was worth £133 billion in 2014 accounting for 8.2% of the UK Economy. The Creative Economy has grown more than 25% in the last four years. Within this sector technology represents a substantial scale of impact both directly in terms of for example software as well as indirectly through areas such as digital marketing. Direct Gross added value of IT, software and computer services sectors were worth £36.6 billion in 2014.

The Commons Science and Technology Committee reported back to Parliament at the start of June 2016 that the UK needs another 745,000 workers with digital skills by 2017.

Course content

The Masters of Science in Interaction Design and Computing takes into account the emerging needs of the marketplace focusing on the key areas of enterprise, user experience, interaction, innovation and development as well as offering options in various subjects including web, mobile and data. It focuses upon the analysis, design, prototyping and evaluation of multimedia, multi-modal, and multi-platform user interfaces that are easy to use and support a great user experience.

You will have the opportunity to:
-Take the role of a user experience (UX) designer/analyst in an interdisciplinary team of students from across the Digital Media Kingston programme, and use industry-standard techniques to deliver on time

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.

-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.
-As the work placement is an assessed part of the course for international students, this is covered by a student's tier 4 visa.

This newly redesigned course enables graduates to be able to understand, design and develop digital solutions within the emergent digital economies. Graduates would be able to follow a flexible program of study and either plan a career in interaction design, mobile and digital solutions, data and analytics, or emergent systems or to explore the opportunities offered in London as a start-up capital.

The digital sector continues to evolve and technologies, platforms, interaction paradigms and business models are increasingly requiring technical ability combined with commercial and design acumen that the course encourages.

Boston Consulting Group estimated that by the end of 2016 the internet economy in the G-20 economies will be worth USD 4.2 trillion (up from USD 2.3 trillion in 2010) and that the internet contributes over 12 per cent of GDP in the United Kingdom.

The mobile apps sector has revenues of more than €10 billion per annum or jobs in the order of 790.000 across the whole EU economy and continues to grow at a fast rate. Within the UK the digital sector has critical importance and reports suggest 14.4% of companies in the UK are involved in the Digital economy and some 1.46 million people are employed. More than one million jobs were advertised in 2014 showing a growth of 28% and there are suggestions that the growth forecast is around 5.4%

The Business Growth Fund and Barclays published a report in March 2014 that supported the phenomenal growth experienced by tech businesses in the UK, finding that London is home to Europe’s fastest growing tech cluster, with 27% of all job growth in London generated by the tech and digital sector.

A recent study published by the Department of Culture, Media and Sports valued the creative industries as contributing was worth £133 billion in 2014 accounting for 8.2% of the UK Economy. The Creative Economy has grown more than 25% in the last four years. Within this sector technology represents a substantial scale of impact both directly in terms of for example software as well as indirectly through areas such as digital marketing. Direct Gross added value of IT, software and computer services sectors were worth £36.6 billion in 2014.

The Masters of Science in Interaction Design and Computing takes into account the emerging needs of the marketplace focusing on the key areas of enterprise, user experience, interaction, innovation and development as well as offering options in various subjects including web, mobile and data. Program overview

Human-computer interaction (HCI) addresses the design, evaluation, and implementation of interactive computing and computing-based systems for the benefit of human use. HCI research is driven by technological advances and the increasing pervasiveness of computing devices in our society. With an emphasis on making computing technologies more user-friendly, HCI has emerged as a dynamic, multifaceted area of study that merges theory from science, engineering, and design––as well as concepts and methodologies from psychology, anthropology, sociology, and industrial design––with the technical concerns of computing.

The master of science degree in human-computer interaction provides the knowledge and skills necessary for conceptualizing, designing, implementing, and evaluating software applications and computing technologies for the benefit of the user, whether the user is an individual, a group, an organization, or a society. Human, technological, and organizational concerns are interwoven throughout the curriculum and addressed in team- and project-based learning experiences.

Plan of study

The program is comprised of four required core courses, up to three program electives (depending upon capstone option chosen), two application domain courses, and a capstone project or thesis.

Core courses

The core courses provide knowledge and skills in the conceptual and methodological frameworks of HCI and HCI research. Emphasis is on understanding human cognition as it applies to information systems plus interaction design, interface prototyping, and usability evaluation.

Electives

Student choose up to three electives, depending on which capstone option they choose to complete.

Students will select two courses from the program electives list. In select cases, students can petition for approval to include a course complementray to the degree program as a program elective. Thesis/Capstone project

Students may complete a thesis or capstone project. (Student who choose the capstone will complete one additional elective.) This experience is meant to be an empirical study of a HCI problem, which can be the development of a software product through user-centered design processes. The results are either published in a peer-reviewed journal or publicly disseminated in an appropriate professional venue.

-Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0* (B average).
-Submit official transcripts (in English) of all previously completed undergraduate and graduate course work.
-Have prior study or professional experience in computing; however, study in other disciplines will be given consideration.
-Complete a graduate application.
-International applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Minimum scores of 570 (paper-based) or 88 (Internet-based) are required.
-Applicants with undergraduate degrees from foreign universities are required to submit GRE scores.

*Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 may be considered, but are required to submit standard Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores.

Prerequisites:
The program requires strong technical and social science skills. Knowledge of quantitative statistical methodologies is important since students review research studies as well as analyze the results of their own usability evaluations. Students are also expected to have a solid background in computer programming. These competencies may be demonstrated by previous course work, technical certifications, or comparable work experience. Bridge courses are available to fulfill any gaps in an applicant's qualifications. Applicants will be made aware of any areas where additional course work may be necessary.

Maximum time limit:
University policy requires that graduate programs be completed within seven years of the student's initial registration for courses in the program. Bridge courses are excluded.

This course is ideal if you have some existing programming skills and but wish to understand users and work with them to create technologies with positive user experiences. There is a growing demand for UX professionals and this course will provide you with skills and expertise needed to work in a team or individually to design and evaluate successful products. There is also a vibrant international research community developing new methods and theories that underpin UX within the broad field of HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) and more specific Interaction Design (IxD) and User Experience (UxD) areas, which you will encounter on the course. You will be taught by staff that are research active within the field of UX and working with UX practitioners within companies.

Learning Environment and Assessment

The course is delivered in the Computing and Technology Building at the City Campus in Preston. Students have access to the latest technology, and can study in a supportive environment. We aim to provide a challenging and stimulating environment in which you can develop and learn new skills. As an MRes student you will be supported in exploring your full potential through taught modules and an extended project. Teaching is done in small groups with plenty of opportunities for practical work, networking with students and staff, and to get involved with research activities.

Content

MA Interaction Design Communication provides an opportunity for experimental practice in an area of design that increasingly explores the intersection of the physical and digital domains. With a focus on synthesising thought through rigorous design prototyping (making), digital processes and user perspectives, the course is highly reflective of interdisciplinary practice within the contemporary design, media and communications industries.

The integrated approach of the course to critical thinking provides you with the opportunity to work with critical ideas in an applied design context – for example psycho-geographic practice as empirical research or engaging with other critical theories of space to generate user perspectives. This ensures that ideation processes take on both the macro as well as micro opportunities for innovation and speculation crucial to building a portfolio of highly engaged work.

As well as placing you in a position to work across the board spectrum of interaction, design and communication the course is just as interested in design questions as design answers. This means that the course also prepares you for progression to further design research at MPhil/PhD level as well as to advanced self-directed experimental practice.

The User Experience Design MSc is a flexible course that you can tailor to your own professional interests. It will help to train you for roles that range from usability, interaction and interface design through to general project management and consulting.

The course is for designers and software developers wishing to enhance their knowledge of user-centred design and usability evaluation of software-enabled products.

Course content has been designed for maximum relevancy to the marketplace.

Upon completion, you'll be able to apply your knowledge and interaction design skills to novel interaction paradigms; make effective use of a broad range of design methods; obtain in-depth knowledge of developments in mobile, ubiquitous or wearable systems and understand the commercial contexts of interaction design.

Course structure

The course can be studied full-time or part-time.

For full-time students the academic year is divided into three 15-week semesters.

The taught element of the course is delivered during the first two semesters. Modules involve approximately 20 per cent classroom teaching and 80 per cent individual or group work. The third semester focuses on your major project.

Part-time students study alongside full-time students with a minimum attendance of one half day per week, depending on the number of modules taken.

On this course, you will learn how to create rich and meaningful stories with data. Programme Details

The teaching combines interactive lectures and group seminar discussions with support through one-to-one tutorials. You also receive feedback on your work through friendly but critical peer review in group sessions with other students, members of faculty and other experts as appropriate. One of the units includes working as a team. Your project work emphasises self-initiated learning which gives you the freedom to explore the specialist area of your interest, while being helpfully guided by your supervisor. The curriculum is very closely related to the research areas in the department, so the staff have cutting edge knowledge of the field and its potential for innovation.

Your learning is mostly assessed through the submission of practical course work, such as digital prototypes, and the documentation of the learning journey in sketchbooks, diaries, blogs or journals.

This will be documenting contextual research as well as stages in practical experimentation and annotation of reflection. There are some written elements to be submitted as well, mostly accompanying proposals/reports to contextualise your practice. The assessment also includes individual and group presentations, this mode is also used to give you formative feedback on your work throughout.
