This programme responds to the growing demands made on the humanitarian and development sectors by intensive urbanisation. This course has been established by the research and consultancy group on International Development, Emergencies and Refugees (IDEARS) - part of the Weeks Centre at LSBU. If you wish to pursue a career with government, non-governmental organisations, international agencies, public and private organisations and enterprises, this course is for you.

Rapidly urbanising world

Ours is a rapidly urbanising world: by 2010 over half the world's population lived in cities. Urbanization is fastest in the developing world, where both primary and secondary cities are rapidly expanding. It is predicted that by 2020 more Africans will live in urban than in rural areas, and in China, by 2023. Except in countries emerging from war, urbanisation is closely linked to economic growth, although urban poverty levels continue to rise.

This rapid growth, particularly in the light of its links to the flight from rural poverty and the development of a massive informal sector, has posed immense challenges to all urban systems. In many Asian, Latin American and African cities 30-70% of the population lives in slums and more than 90% of new jobs are in the informal sector. In transition countries, already highly urbanised, the changing political and economic framework has led to widespread poverty. Everywhere, urban roads, utilities, education and health services, and governance processes are heavily strained. While cities experience high levels of investment, it is often uneven.

This context is now widely recognised among all major actors, with policy and programmes targeting the urban sector now a growth area. The challenge for development professionals, whether working in donor agencies, NGOs, governments or private practice, is to understand the broad economic and political context of urbanization, develop analyses of complex urban trends, opportunities and problems, and be able to draw on a range of appropriate interventions. People seeking work or progression in development practice will be moving into a growth area if they can demonstrate familiarity with urban issues and policies in developing countries.

Modules

You'll explore urban issues, strongly linked to analyses of broader development issues, which will prepare them for roles in development agencies, NGOs, urban management or community work. It provides a thorough grounding in the broad agendas of poverty reduction and its global context. At the same time it provides a thorough understanding of rapidly changing urban settings and enables students to acquire practical development planning skills for an urban setting. An emphasis on research as well as practical skills allows students to specialise in their particular areas of interest.

Dissertation and voluntary work placement

Part of the dissertation may be replaced with a voluntary work placement in one of our partner organisations. Through the use of case studies you will analyse a comprehensive range of development issues, such as: markets, trade and the global economy; the role of international institutions and agencies; human development; poverty and poverty reduction; social provision in developing countries; rural development and urbanisation; environmental policies and sustainable development; empowerment and participation; migration.

Through a specialist theoretical module you'll also acquire a thorough grounding in urban development issues and their links to a broad development agenda; and this will be followed by a project module which will enable you to apply the theory and understand the necessary skills to plan, execute and monitor an urban development project. The course also develops the skills required to undertake development research, focusing on appropriate methodologies, data collection, policy design and implementation.

Professional links

The MSc has excellent relations with practicing development urbanists around the country, who provide the course with strong links to current thinking and practice; as well as with Development Agencies and NGO working in the development field. Students from these organisations are regularly enrolled on the course and members of these organisations give regular presentations to MSc students.

Employability

Students on our MSc Development and Urbanisation course will benefit from the renewed international interest in the urban sphere. Previous graduates have entered careers with a wide range of employers, working for international organisations, such as, the United Nations and its constituent organisations, the World Bank, the International Labour Organisation and the World Health Organisation.

Many take up important posts in their home countries within government, non-government and civil society organisations or non-governmental development organisations in the UK, such as Christian Aid and Oxfam, in addition to teaching posts in universities and colleges specialising in Development research and practice.

Our Sustainable Cities MA, MSc course will give you advanced understanding of contemporary debates about sustainable cities, with a specific focus on the human and physical processes shaping urban ecologies and environments.

Course purpose

The degree combines pure and applied research methods from human and physical geography leading to an advanced level understanding of contemporary debates about sustainable cities. Specific foci will be the human and physical processes shaping urban ecologies, environments and social structure and process.

Course format and assessment

Teaching

We will teach you through a combination of lectures and seminars, normally for 20 hours for a 20-credit module. In addition we expect you to complete 180 hours of independent study per module. For your 12,000 word dissertation, we will provide four workshops and five hours of one-to-one supervision to complement your 587 hours of independent study.

Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

Assessment

Performance on taught modules in the Geography Department is normally assessed through essays and other written assignments, oral presentations, lab work and occasionally by examination, depending on the modules selected. All students also undertake a research-based dissertation of 12,000 words.

DEVELOPMENT IN A COMPLEX AND HIGHLY DIFFERENTIATED WORLD

International Development Studies focuses on current development issues and teaches conceptual, theoretical, and empirical knowledge of trends and topics on the development agenda.

Over the past decade, the number of actors active in the development domain has multiplied. In addition to the traditional donors, new 'players' have entered the scene, including foundations and diaspora-organizations. Furthermore, individual migrants and socially-engaged entrepreneurs are acknowledging their responsibility for acting to benefit society at large, taking responsibility for the social and environmental impacts of production activities and/or consumption.

The multidisciplinary Master's programme in International Development Studies addresses the current development challenges and engages with these current, urgent and highly important issues. In particular, the programme focuses on topics surrounding migration/mobilities, climate change, land governance, urbanization and corporate social responsibility. Students are found in an international environment, with peers and staff from diverse disciplinary and cultural backgrounds. A research-oriented internship abroad is a core component of the programme.

This programme offers students a better understanding of natural hazards and the means by which their impacts on the market can be mitigated or avoided.

About this degree

Strong emphasis is placed on developing an improved understanding of natural hazards – the nature of available data, the conclusions we can draw from them, limitations and relevant cutting-edge research. Content focuses on hazards of most interest to the market, most notably windstorm, flood and earthquake, but also addresses geotechnical issues such as dam and reservoir safety, radioactive waste and energy resource issues.

Students undertake modules to the value of 60 credits.

The Master in Human Settlements addresses rapid urbanization in the developing world and contemporary urban transformations within the scope of sustainable development. The programme aims to provide insight into the problems of human settlements as related to rapid change and to the interaction between modernity and tradition, formal and informal city-making.

What's the Human Settlements about? 

Architecture, urbanism and spatial planning are the core disciplines of the programme. Contributions from economics, geography and anthropology, among others, complement this core.

Design studios form an important part of the programme, a status reflected in their credit load. They are organized as two full days of work on Mondays and Tuesdays to provide an intensive and immersive working environment, as occurs in most professional practices. They also are courses where a balance between teamwork and individual contribution is developed, since students are subdivided in small but mixed groups from inception.

Core courses are related to the studios themselves, whereas for students selecting a more research-oriented trajectory in line with the programme's profile supporting courses are organized for the elaboration of a research Master's thesis.

International

Study trips to various destinations are organised throughout the academic year as a compulsory part of the MaHS programme. You will be able to observe and experience the area being studied and will have a unique opportunity to link your theoretical knowledge to daily practice and fieldwork. The trips include visits to sites, lectures by local experts and a range of assignments. Recent study trips in Europe have been made to:

Our Conservation and Biodiversity Masters offers great flexibility, with a wide choice of topics from across disciplines, enabling you to construct a programme that suits your individual interests and career ambitions in this increasingly important field.

You will have the opportunity to gain a solid foundation in the key theoretical issues, such as wildlife population dynamics and conservation biology, and learn how these are applied to real-world problems, such as managing habitats or dealing with wildlife-human conflicts. Additionally, you will gain and develop the key skills that are valued by employers, such as problem solving, report writing, data analysis and presentation skills.

You will complete six taught modules delivered by world-leading researchers from our three internationally-renowned partner organisations: Lancaster Environment Centre, Rothamsted Research and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. This gives you the opportunity to interact with a wide range of expert specialists, including lake ecologists, political ecologists, food security biologists, earth observation geographers, social scientists and others, so that you can put your learning into a wider context.

Several modules include field trips to the beautiful and topographically varied countryside around Lancaster, and beyond. If you want to travel further afield, we have research projects and partners across the globe that provide exiting opportunities when it comes to selecting your dissertation project.

This project forms a substantial part of your Masters degree. It will enhance your practical and analytical skills and give you the opportunity to apply your learning to a real-world challenge. This may involve a doing a project with a government agency or conservation organisation through our award winning Centre for Global Eco-innovation, which uses our excellent links with the environmental and conservation sectors. Examples of previous dissertation projects are:

As Latin American and Caribbean Countries (LAC) experience economic development, concerns on environmental degradation and contamination continue to grow. The region faces serious challenges such as climate change and natural disasters; and under conditions of population growth, social conflict, urbanization and industrialization efficient environmental policies and programs are required to sustainably manage the natural resources.

The objective of the double degree master program is to qualify professionals and experts in the field of environmental and natural resources management with the necessary skills, tools and methods in the context of international cooperation with a clear focus on German/European Latin American cooperation. Graduates are able to analyze and solve complex environmental problems in their specific socio-cultural and political contexts, given the technical and economic potentials of both regions.

The ENREM program is based on the curricula of the two accredited master programs:

• “Maestria en Ciencias Ambientales”at the Programa Multidisciplinario de Posgrado en Ciencias Ambientales (PMPCA) at University San Luis Potosí (UASLP) in Mexico and
• “Natural Resources Management and Development” at the Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT) at TH Köln - University of Applied Sciences in Germany.

The ENREM Master program targets professionals of different academic backgrounds with experience related to the natural resources sector. They seek to deepen their knowledge in Environment and Resources Management and wish to acquire management and leadership skills as well as regional and intercultural competences within the context of international – especially German-Latin American cooperation – and at the same time provide their work experience and regional knowledge to the mutual learning and intercultural environment.

In an interdisciplinary learning environment, students diversify their knowledge and build the capacity to think transdisciplinarily and laterally, as well as team and leadership skills, among them intercultural abilities. These competencies shall equip the graduates with the ability to analyze, characterize and solve complex problems of environmental and natural resources management and well as foster sustainable development, all in line with the SDGs agenda.

Contents

The double degree master program runs for four semesters and starts in winter term (august) of each year. The first two semesters will take place in San Luis Potosí (Mexico), the third in Cologne (Germany) and the last semester is exclusively for the development of the master thesis project either in Mexico, another Latin American Country or Germany depending in the thesis topic.

Courses in Mexico are mainly implemented in Spanish while the official teaching language at ITT is English.

The course is structured through mandatory and elective modules, and is accompanied by practical experiences, exercises, team projects and seminars throughout the program.

The mandatory modules are organized in Core Modules and Project Modules, these modules provides the student with a general overview of different disciplines relevant to natural resources. The elective modules in the second and third semester are organized into two blocks, one in their area of “specialization elective related to the topics of natural resources management” and the other from the “Methods and Tools”.

Each of the two partner universities has a different focus related to the following areas:
• UASLP, Mexico: Prevention and Control, Environmental Assessment, Renewable Natural Resources, Environmental Management, Environmental and Health.
• TH Köln, Germany: Environmental and Land use Management, Urban and Regional Management complemented by Integrated Water Resources Management and/ or Renewable Energy Management

The limited numbers of scholarship for covering living expenses are provided by:
• The Mexican national Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT): partial scholarship
• The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD): full scholarship

The MA pathway in Twentieth Century and Contemporary Literature will enable you to explore the complex cultural histories of literatures in English from the twentieth century to the present, and offers advanced training in the practice of close textual study, history and theory. Individual modules trace the paradoxes of modernity within the intersecting discourses of aesthetics, education, economics, ethnicity, nationalism, legality, science, sexuality and urbanization.

Our pathway in Twentieth Century and Contemporary Literature allows you to specialise in the literary culture and history of the long twentieth century. It is taught by leading experts in the field and has a unique link to the Southampton Centre for Modern and Contemporary Writing .

The MA English Literary Studies (Twentieth Century and Contemporary) will enable you to work independently in the field; to explore how genres, authors, and texts participate in wider public discourses concerning race, gender, embodiment, disability, climate change, science, globalization, and sexualities; to examine the interface between literary and visual cultures; and to evaluate unique publications and archival resources specific to the period. It will develop your knowledge and understanding of critical and research methods appropriate to the period; raise your awareness of the historical and critical reception of literature and culture in the long twentieth century; and empower you to explore the nuances of literary meaning in the contested cultural field of twentieth-century public culture.

The Master’s degree in Smart City Design is taught in English and is designed to provide you with sound competencies in business, management and design.
