Dynamics of nature and culture, social encounters, urban narratives, architectural ensembles, and urban settings will be elements that are studied in-depth throughout this module. This course will be based on the reintroduction of the utilization of “observational urbanism” as a method and tool for studying the public realm and social life therein. This course is fundamentally about researching the city which will include tools for analysis of public space using mental mapping, behavior mapping, critical city walks, photography methods, and space syntax analysis. Course will conclude with the analysis of a selected problem in the particular locality with the participants oral presentation within the closing colloquium that will include invited critic guests. The course consists of combinatory modulets - theoretical and methodological training (literature review, analysis of case studies in literature related to publis spaces), field trips and data collection (practical training of research techniques and tools) and basics in observational urbanism, city walks, visual mapping, space syntax, transect studies, link and task analysis and public participation.

This program will develop leadership and expertise in urban design and urbanism with a strong emphasis on sustainability, quantification and implementation.

The program’s core units will provide you with an appreciation and understanding of the historical and theoretical dimensions of urbanism and design, urban morphology and the relationship between ecological processes and city form.

While design is an important aspect that is at the core of the Diploma and Master’s degrees, there is universal recognition that the defining aspects of urban design practice is its integrating role in multidisciplinary teams.

Students will develop the ability to analyse contexts, define principles and provide guidance for future designers of buildings, landscapes and the public domain.

This ‘indirect’ design aspect of the built environment requires a related but distinct set of skills including facilitation, collaboration and communication in addition to being able to think spatially and communicate visually.

These skills are not the exclusive domain of ‘designers’ and people from a range of backgrounds and capabilities to be welcomed into an urban design program which aims to be multidisciplinary and emulate practice.

Core units may complemented with electives that will strengthen your knowledge in related fields: for example, architects can take electives in planning and planners can extend their understanding of architecture. All students can reinforce their knowledge of sustainability. Selected exemplary design approaches will be examined through lectures, readings, and seminars including historical paradigmatic change in urban form and design. This course is organized as an advanced seminar facilitating information exchange and discussions. It will focus on the thought, principles and places that have shaped the history, theory and practice of urban design and physical planning. Examples will illustrate how urban form is shaped by both strong blueprint planning/design interventions and incremental historicaal and morphological evolutions. This programme aims at providing a multidisciplinary background for architects, with a special focus on environmental sustainability and landscape design. The concept of sustainability is associated with a high quality transformation of landscape, from the macro-scale of urban planning, to the micro-scale of technical details, how the varied scales connect and interrelate with each other. This method is oriented to a physical, social and technical approach, passing over a close specialized theme vision. The international program involves also workshops, study trips, and summer schools.

The MSc Degree programme in Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Design offers the student the tools to become an Architect with a sound competence on theories, methods and applications of Architecture and of Landscape Design, highly skilled in the issues of contemporary territories: regeneration of productive landscapes; sustainable transformation of the architectural, urban and rural landscapes; transformation of the built environment and re-use of the existent soil; design of open spaces and infrastructures; protection of the territory; valorisation of the ecological and cultural resources; design strategies for new forms of sustainable inhabiting.
To this aim, this Degree Programme offers a complex view on the environment, dealing with all the landscape forms: from urban, to agricultural and to suburban areas, in line with the European Landscape Convention (2000) which “applies to the entire territory of
the Parties and covers natural, rural, urban and peri-urban areas”. More specifically, the landscape is seen as “represented”, “constructed” and “productive” landscape, with a specific attention to the aspects of sustainability (from a physical, economic and social point of view). The programme is taught in English.

The field of Architecture and Urban Design is closely linked to some of today’s most pressing societal, environmental and cultural challenges. It encompasses a wide range of capabilities, from design and technology to critical thinking.

Programme description

The Master’s Programme in Architecture and Urban Design provides the skills and knowledge needed to practice professionally. The programme emphasizes a research-oriented approach in order to anticipate future challenges for architects and urban designers. Its profile is design led and practical, as well as academic and theoretical.

A majority of the coursework is project-based and it takes place in design studios led by experienced architects and researchers. These studios function as lab environments that target current specializations within the field. Studios are supplemented with course modules that focus on history and theory, design and technology, as well as leadership and professional practice.

The Department of Architecture at Chalmers houses an excellent infrastructure in the form of studio spaces, an architecture library, model workshops and digital fabrication, a robot lab and several research groups and centres. A national and international network is provided through collaborations and partnerships with external practitioners, researchers, stakeholders and industry.

Who should apply

The programme welcomes students that hold a Bachelor’s degree in architecture, urban design, architecture and engineering, interior architecture, or landscape architecture. A portfolio containing architectural and/or urban design work is required.

Studio spaces - all students have personal desks and storage areas in studio spaces with 24/7 access. Studio spaces are equipped with workstations, printers and large scale plotters, as well as Wi-Fi.

CAD-lab - houses workstations with software for CAD-drawing, 3D-modelling, desktop publishing, video editing, and GIS.

Robot Lab - is a research facility that investigates robotic technology in architectural design. Equipment includes three robotic arms.

Programme description

Sustainable development is a political vision that entails huge challenges for social and technical innovation all over the world. It has consequences for all professions, not least for urban planning, architectural design and the full complexity of societal development can be addressed and managed through design for sustainable development.
This programme provides you with the skills and methods valid where design approaches are required. As a student, you are trained to find solutions that support sustainable development in a large variety of contexts and in dynamic situations. The perspective is holistic and systemic, comprising system levels and scales from urban structures, buildings and technical support systems to detailed construction elements. The programme is based on studios where real life situations and problems faced by society are handled in close contact with local stakeholders and actors.

The overall point of departure is the everyday life of people and the support of dignified lives and livelihoods in rapidly changing and sometimes extreme environments, through the development and implementation of aesthetic, affordable, socially and culturally appropriate, energy and material efficient, healthy and user friendly design solutions.

The programme offers a selection of courses and design studios from which the students can build upon in order to shape an individual profile during two years. Potential profiles are:

Sustainable building with a focus on building scale, building systems and sustainable solutions

Educational methods

The programme addresses the study of architecture and cities using the theoretical and analytical framework of space syntax as well as wider theoretical and analytical approaches. Dissertation/report
All MSc students submit a 10,000-word dissertation related to the main themes of the programme, typically involving a directed research project on a building or urban site.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through seminars, lectures, design studios, hands-on computer workshops, a variety of field trips in and around London and an international trip (optional). Assessment is through essays, written and take-home examinations, oral presentations, project reviews, debates, group and individual projects, classroom exercises and the dissertation.

Fieldwork
The E-merging analysis and design studio (optional module) is usually accompanied by an international trip not exceeding £ 750 per person, based on standard costs as specified by the School.

Careers

Graduates of the programme go on to many different career routes: some have progressed to PhD degrees and have obtained academic positions in top universities worldwide, others have found teaching positions on architectural programmes; some go into policy-making activities; and many have ploughed their knowledge back into furthering their architectural/design careers.
