This MRes in Computer Modelling in Engineering programme consists of two streams: students may choose to specialise in either structures or fluids. The taught modules provide a good grounding in computer modelling and in the finite element method, in particular.

The Health Promotion MSc will equip you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to work in health promotion and public health at local, national or international levels.

The course is modular, so you will study the essential core modules and then be able to choose one of four pathways to match your previous experience, future ambitions, and if you wish to study full-time or part-time.

During the course you will explore the environments and social conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age in relation to health, and the factors that influence our health behaviours.

You will have the opportunity to combine your health promotion study with complementary disciplines by choosing relevant modules from the Brighton Business School and Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

The course will benefit you if you are working in a role with a health promotion component and want to deepen your knowledge, or if you want to develop skills for working in a public health-related field. Our students include health and social care professionals, school teachers, voluntary workers and those changing career.

Course structure

The Health Promotion MSc has four possible course pathways.

School of Health Sciences postgraduate education

This course is part of our School of Health Sciences postgraduate education programme. The programme allows you to sign up for one module at a time and build your qualification as you go. The masters award

You need to earn a total of 180 credits for the masters award, consisting of six 20-credit taught modules and a 60-credit dissertation. Twenty-credit modules have approximately 30 hours' classroom-based lecturer contact or group work and we expect this to be backed up by approximately 170 hours of individual study and work on assignments.

Teaching and assessment

The course team are active in public health research particularly around healthy weight, inequalities, mental health, sexual health, infant feeding, diabetes prevention and young people and we provide dissertation research opportunities in these areas.

You will experience formal teaching alongside a series of extracurricular seminars both within the school and through forums such as the Brighton and Sussex Universities Food Network, or the Global Health Network which operate across University of Brighton, Brighton and Sussex Medical School and University of Sussex.

The assessment and teaching methods are varied, including problem based learning in response to public health triggers, and assessments by presentation, vivas as well as formal written critical reports.

Dissertation

The dissertation consists of a literature review, small-scale prime research or a work-based learning project.

You will be supported through your dissertation via monthly optional discussion groups in addition to formal dissertation supervision. If you are working, the dissertation provides an opportunity to conduct a work-based learning project (if you wish), for example evaluating or developing a particular aspect of your organisation's work from a health promotion perspective.

Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite

Our Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite is among the best equipped in the country, and is an invaluable tool for assessment and monitoring students' progress throughout the course.

You will benefit from practising nursing skills in an environment that simulates real-life professional experiences. Provided by the NHS’ South East Coast Ambulance Service, you may have access to our Simbulance, enabling you to work alongside paramedic students in an interprofessional learning environment. On board is a high fidelity mannikin with multiple uses, and a child-size mannikin for paediatric scenarios. 

Learning by simulation means you will be confident in your ability to apply your knowledge and skills in your professional life.

Careers and Employability

On graduation, you will be prepared for a career as a health promotion specialist working in public health practice in the public, not-for-profit, voluntary or commercial sector.

Our students often find employment in public health, or change their job role to include more public health, part way through their masters and may shift from full-time to part-time study to complete their MSc.

Typical roles include, programme coordinators or commissioners for local public health, health project coordinators for voluntary sector organisations, young peoples’ welfare or sexual health advisers in a college or primary prevention setting.

The MSc in Forensic Science is the UK’s longest established forensic science degree course, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2016/2017.

You’ll join a global network of Strathclyde forensic science graduates in highly respected positions all over the world.

In addition to preparing you for life as a forensic scientist, you’ll also graduate with a wide range of practical skills, problem solving and investigative thinking relevant to a wide range of careers.

Following a general introduction to forensic science in semester 1, you can choose to specialise in either forensic biology or forensic chemistry. As a forensic biologist you’ll study a range of topics including:

If you choose to specialise in forensic chemistry, you’ll develop expertise in:

Project

In semester 3, MSc students undertake a three-month project, culminating in the production of a dissertation.

Students may be given the opportunity to complete their project in an operational forensic science provider either in the UK or overseas (subject to visa requirements). Alternatively, students may complete their project within the Centre for Forensic Science itself, under the supervision of our team of academics.

Program completion opens new horizons for nurses in education, advanced practice, policy implementation, health care management, and nursing knowledge development. Applicants must be registered nurses with a bachelor's degree, normally in nursing, who meet the admission requirements of the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Program graduates develop skills in leadership in professional nursing practice. The program offers opportunities to move directly into doctoral studies. Assessment

The degree is taught by a combination of lectures, seminars, masterclasses, news days, tutorials and editorial conferences. Assessment is by coursework (including essays, reporting exercises and presentations) and examinations. The optional dissertation counts for a third of the final grade.

This programme aims to:

- teach the professional and academic skills required to practise multimedia journalism to those wishing to pursue a career in the news industry

- educate you to think critically about the ethics, duties and responsibilities of journalism in democratic societies and in emerging democracies and thus improve the quality of journalism as a profession

The Centre is based in state-of-the-art multimedia newsrooms equipped with the latest audio and video-editing technology, a radio studio and broadcast-quality television facilities. A dedicated postgraduate newsroom opened in September 2010. Newsroom computers offer a wide range of software for teaching and research support. Students have access to Press Association news wires, Sky News Radio and Reuters World Television News feeds. They use the Centre’s dedicated multimedia website, http://www.centreforjournalism.co.uk which offers live publishing facilities in text, audio and video. The site is a forum for debate about issues in journalism and the news industry involving students and practitioners in Britain and abroad.

You will gain:

  • A framework for knowledge in the field of urban development and regeneration, preparing you for professional practice or further research activity.
  • An understanding of the principal academic discourse relating to processes of urban development and change, enabling you to engage in professional and inter-professional debate on the nature, purpose and methods of implementing successful urban regeneration programmes and projects.
  • An understanding of the relationship between critical awareness of theory relating to the process of urban development, and its application to specific practice settings.
  • The ability to analyse, synthesise and evaluate both established and emerging policy and practice ideas, and to appreciate alternative methodologies associated with delivering successful urban regeneration programmes and projects.

Special features

An overseas field visit is an optional part of the programme if students choose to undertake the relevant optional course unit: International Planning (Field Visit). The cost of the visit is partly covered by the course fee but there is a student contribution towards the cost of the trip, depending on the venue. Recent fieldtrip locations have included Barcelona, Amsterdam, Belfast, Dublin and Toronto.

Fieldcourses may be scheduled at any point during the twelve-month period of the degree programme and this may include time during University vacations. Successful applicants are expected to be available to attend. Countries to be visited may change their immigration and visa regulations at short notice. The School cannot guarantee that where visas are required for the field course, they will be granted. The School will ensure that, in the unlikely event that a visa is refused, affected students are not academically disadvantaged.

The programme also includes a module that introduces students to the excitement of working within a professional, `real world' context on a 'live' consultancy project. Working with industrial partners, students will be asked to complete a piece of work on an area of planning, urban regeneration, or environmental management - depending on their chosen specialism - to a standard that is expected and demanded in the planning, environmental management or development professions. This core module is highly regarded by employers and students alike.

Teaching and learning

Part-time Study

Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months. There are no evening or weekend course units available on the part-time programme, therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director and seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment methods are largely individually-based, but may also involve some elements of group-working and submission. Overall, you are continuously assessed via a range of methods, including essays and report writing, topic papers and critical reviews, project portfolios and assessed workshop presentations.

A 15,000-word dissertation on an approved topic is discussed and chosen at the beginning of the second semester and a suitable supervisor allocated. Initial work focuses upon an overview of the chosen topic, a literature review and the design of the methodology to be adopted. During the latter part of Semester 2 and over the summer you undertake the necessary research and analysis, culminating in the writing of your dissertation.

Tackling skills deficiencies in the field, identified by various papers and reviews, and by the Academy for Sustainable Communities (2007) and the Audit Commission (2008), our course meets the needs of a job market in central and local government, regeneration partnerships, consultancies and non-governmental organisations. It can lead to a professional career as a chartered surveyor or (with an appropriate undergraduate degree) planning professional.

Helping you transition comfortably

The integration process begins the moment you arrive on campus. Through our mandatory Business English Program you will get a four-week customized course in business reading, writing listening and speaking. We also ensure that you adapt socially. In between classes, we’ve scheduled a full four weeks of activities and trips. You’ll visit Niagara Falls and Toronto, explore St. Catharines and settle into your new life. You’ll know your classmates, the Niagara region and feel comfortable and ready to begin your coursework.

MBA (ISP) Program Plan

Goodman’s MBA (ISP) is an innovative program designed to meet your needs as an international student, combining an intensive Business English Program with our comprehensive MBA core curriculum and flexible specializations. All of your coursework is taken in classes exclusively composed of your fellow international students.

The general stream provides you with a flexible program plan and the ability to take a variety of elective courses in different fields. The general stream is ideal if you have a wide range of interests, or are planning on working in general management and want to gain a competitive edge.

Industry Involvement with Co-op

Our MBA (ISP) includes an optional paid co-op term where you can gain valuable skills, link theory to practice and make important connections. Your co-op term is offered at the end of your MBA program and ensures that you’ve had a chance to strengthen your English language skills and are ready to transition into your new career.

Our MBA (ISP) students hold co-op positions such as project manager, marketing assistant, financial analyst, tax practice intern.

We offer six MBA specializations:

ACCOUNTING/ CPA ACCREDITED

The CPA/MBA pathway offers a CPA-Accredited stream that provides graduates with advanced standing in the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP). The new accredited stream allows non-accounting university graduates to pursue an MBA and an accounting designation at the same time. Goodman is currently the only business school in Ontario to offer a combined MBA and CPA program.

BUSINESS ANALYTICS

Business analytics uses data and statistical methods to help organizations gain insight from their data in order to analyze historical data, predict customer behaviour or help improve business processes. The field has increased in popularity in recent years due to the increase in data available to organizations from customer loyalty programs, e-commerce transactions, and even sensory data from machines.

OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

The operations management specialization includes a focus on project management, quality management, logistics and supply chain management. Courses will cover many of the topics required for the Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) and the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) professional designations from APICS -The Association for Operations Management (formerly the American Production and Inventory Control Society).

FINANCE

This specialization is ideal if you are seeking a focus mainly on investments and portfolio management. This program has a high degree of correlation with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) program.

MARKETING

Provides you with an integrated managerial approach to marketing that helps you apply the theoretical principles of marketing to practical, real world problems. Emphasis is placed on issues that relate to marketing in the global business world.

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Designed to provide you with a strong foundation in the theory and practice of HR. This specialization provides you with the majority of the course work necessary for the CHRP designation.

Designed by University of Milano-Bicocca (Milan, Italy) in partnership with Centennial College (Toronto, Canada) and Alliance University (Bangalore, India), MAIB gives you a hands-on global management experience by living and studying in 3 Global cities – Milan, Italy; Toronto, Canada and Bangalore, India – across 3 Different Continents.

MAIB is a 14 months, full time course of 90 ECTS credits where you attain two internationally recognized degrees: 1 st Level European Master Degree and a Canadian Graduate Certificate in International Business Management (IBM), with an option of a 3rd MBA Degree from Alliance University (India), with an additional study period of 4 months.

The program is spread over 3 academic terms, with a total of 580 class hours, followed by 3 months Internship equivalent to 500 hours.

The course is taught in English. Students are required to be proficient with the English language.

Students are required to spend the first three quarters in three different countries/cities (Milan, Bangalore, Toronto), thus gaining a broad international perspective. They will select the country in which they will spend the fourth and last quarter, which is dedicated to internship.

Pathways

The Program offers the following paths:

a) MAIB + IBM – 14 months
MAIB + IBM is a double credential, rigorous, full-time program of 14 months duration (including Internship), with a total of 90 credits. There are no part-time students in the program. The students earn European First Level Master Degree, awarded by the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy and Ontario College Graduate Certificate from Centennial College, Toronto in International Business Management (IBM).

b) MAIB + IBM + Internship Period in Canada (for exploring work in Canada Option) – 15 months
The city of Toronto, a multi-cultural and globally competitive city is home to some of the world’s largest global multi-nationals, banks, business, consulting and financial firms offering students a plenty of opportunities to work and live in Canada.

MAIB students interested in exploring the option of working in Canada will have to enrol at Centennial College for the internship period of 15 weeks: a must in order to comply with the work visa norms of Canadian Government, which may allow up to one year work permit after completing the IBM with an in-Canada internship. Our partner Centennial College will provide all information to students interested in living and working in Canada.

c) MAIB + IBM + MBA – 18 months
MBA Degree from Alliance Business School, Bangalore, India can be achieved with only an additional study period of 4 months with a of total of 30 credits. Additional costs of euro 4.900 apply.

Biomedical Engineers apply their knowledge in engineering, biology, and medicine to healthcare and medical device industries. Biomedical Engineering is a distinct field that encompasses engineering disciplines, biology, life sciences, medicine, clinical applications, and the improvement of human health. Since 2006, our MASC program has trained students in the fundamentals of Biomedical Engineering, providing extensive research experience in biomechanics, biomaterials, biochemical processing, cellular engineering, imaging, medical devices, micro-electro-mechanical implantable systems, and physiological modeling, simulation, monitoring, and control, as well as medical robotics. Graduates continue on to PhD programs as well as research and development positions in industry and other institutions. A professional program, Master of Engineering, is also available.

What makes the program unique?

The Biomedical Engineering Program at UBC is a part of the School of Biomedical Engineering. This unique interdisciplinary structure provides students with unparalleled access to engineering experts across varied Biomedical Engineering research areas at UBC. It emphasizes a balance of biomedical engineering and life science study with a focus on clinical and industrial application. Our graduates have gone on to become industry leaders, especially in the medical device industry, and provide a network of professionals within the community.

Biomedical Engineering at UBC is the only program in Canada to offer the Engineers in Scrubs (EiS) training program. The EiS program began as an NSERC-funded Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program designed to foster innovation in medical technology by training biomedical engineers in clinical environments. Students receive a significant portion of their training in hospital settings, and the program focuses on the medical technology innovation process. This program complements the research training of MASc and PhD students and allows them to work closely with medical professionals in identifying clinical problems and developing a solution.

Research focus

UBC Biomedical Engineering researchers work in a wide range of areas. Our main research clusters (RC) include: Imaging, Modeling, Simulation, and Guided Interventions; BIOMEMs and Bio-Optics; Musculoskeletal Biomechanics, Injury, Disease, and Restorative Treatments; Rehabilitative and Assistive Technologies and Human-Environment Interactions; and Physiological Modeling and Control.

Career options

The MASc program in Biomedical Engineering is designed to prepare students for employment in the public or private sector, or to pursue further studies in a PhD program. Recent graduates have gone on to work at Winnepeg Health Authority, Vancouver Costal Health, and Neovasc Inc. Many have started their own companies, like Arbutus Medical, NrSign Inc, and S2N Engineering Services. Those looking to pursue their MD or Phd have gone on to study at Berkeley, Cambridge, Stanford, University of Tokyo, University of Toronto, as well as UBC. A burgeoning field, ample opportunities exist in the medical instrument industry, pharmaceutical/biochemical industry, hospitals, medical research facilities and educational institutions, and regulatory bodies, governments, and industry associations.
